Media vs. Politicos in a Different Arena

Kim Martucci of Channel 9 crashes down on Councilmember Muriel Bowser at yesterday's D.C. Council/D.C. Media basketball game at the Verizon Center. (Adam Tuss/WTOP)

It's just as well that ethics kept us from betting when the D.C. Council played D.C. reporters in basketball because, well, whom to pick? The media had youth on their side, but the council (yes, actual members; no ringers here) had the height. Yesterday's charity match at Verizon Center -- organized by WTOP's Mark Segraves, after years of trash talk, to benefit high school athletic programs -- got off with a six-point lead by the council, thanks to Tommy Wells, the speedy Kwame Brown and the inspiring presence of coach Marion Barry. But, our colleague (and two-point scorer) David Nakamura reports media coach Kojo Nnamdi put the ball in the hands of forward Wisdom Martin of Fox 5. Martin, a former Jackson State player, went to the hole repeatedly and pulled the media to a 35-25 victory.
