Obamas Take Paris: Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and a Food Taster

The Paris tourist industry just got a huge boost from some seriously high-profile visitors: The Obama family.

Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha arrived in the city Friday night. First stop? The city's iconic Eiffel Tower. The next morning, the president and first lady attended the ceremony for D-Day's 65th anniversary in Normandy, then went back to Paris for some sightseeing with the girls at Notre Dame Cathedral, where they listened to a children's choir.

Later that night the couple left their daughters at the U.S. Embassy, where the family is staying, and headed out for a romantic dinner at La Fontaine de Mars, a traditional bistro that opened in 1908 and is best known for classic food from France's southwest region. The Obamas ordered foie gras, lamb, steak with shallots and table wine. A waiter told reporters that the Secret Service placed a food taster in the kitchen. "It wasn't very pleasant for the cooks at first, but the person was very nice and was relaxed, so it all went well," said Gabriel de Carvalho. (The restaurant confirmed the report; the Secret Service had no comment.)

This morning, the family toured the Pompidou Center to see the modern art, then the president flew back to Washington. "I would love nothing more than to have a leisurely week in Paris, stroll down the Seine, take my wife out to a nice meal, have a picnic in Luxembourg Gardens," he said yesterday. "Those days are over, for the moment."

But the first lady and girls get to stay for a few more days. This afternoon, they went to Elysee palace for a casual lunch with French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Carla, then indulged in one of the great pleasures of Paris: shopping. The group was spotted at children's store Bonpoint.

Why is "news"?

Posted by: Archie_Leach | June 7, 2009 11:45 PM | Report abuse

It's news because, because while Sasha and Malia get to go shopping for $1000 training bras on the taxpayers tab in Paris, their father's Afpak strategy has credited a refugee and health crisis of diabolical scale in Pakistan not seen since Rwanda.

Millions of children are queuing hours and hours under scorching sun for disgusting 'meals', exposed to health concerns including diarrhee, measles, and malaria. 6,000 of 69,000 pregnant women are to give birth next month in the squalid camps without proper medical care.

It's news because people are inspired by the Obamas. People "like" them and eagerly read such articles.

Coward liar Barack HUSSEIN Obama "Apologist in chief", how can he keep his nonsense promise during his campaign, that is, negotiating with U.S. enemies such as North Korea and Iran, which have never respected any treaty with U.S., especially when North Korea just launched many missile and nuclear tests and illegally arrested two American journalists Laura Ling and Eunu Lee, while Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, an extremist who has called for Israel to be wiped off the map and denied the holocaust, again defied U.S. and Europe with his racist hate speech against Israel at a U.N. anti-racism conference? Is Obama going to bow to Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejas as he did to King Abdulla of Saudi Arabia to gain his peace deals? Is he willing to convert to Islam, his Kenyan father and Indonesian step father's religion, to meet Osama Bin Laden's requirement that in order to end the Iraq war, U.S. troop withdrawal is not enough, Americans must reject their democratic system and embrace Islam? Just recently, Obama said that he would support Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy with rigorous inspections, giving a green light to Teheran's ambituous uranium enrichment program, which can be used for its discreet nuclear bomb development program as well, without suffering sanctions and economic isolation as it currently endures. Does Obama want Iran to become another North Korea using its nuclear power to terrorize the U.S and its allies? As for a Palestinian state demanded by Obama, it will undoubtedly soon become a TERRORIST state under control of terrorist militant group Hamas, which is the most powerful and popular force with its goal to destroy Israel and which won a majority seats in the current Palestinian National Authority in 2006 election and ousted Fatah militant group of Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas of Gaza in 2007. Last but not least, Obama ordered to stop waterboarding tactic used by CIA, even it worked well on terrorist suspects like Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the self-describer planner of 9-11 attacks who provided CIA with valuable information, preventing more 9-11 attacks and saving thousands of American lives.

For those who ask "why is this news" I would simply ask "why are you expecting news from a gossip column?" Not everything on is supposed to be hard news. Do you post the same comments about a movie review?

As for the cost of the trip, as everyone knows, the president's use of Air Force One, etc., is no different than previous presidents.

The Obamas are growing vegetables on the South Lawn and using their own money to re-decorate the White House. Get real.

lockmallup, TIMNGUYEN, Ralphinphnx--sounds like a little jealousy there. Perhaps you need to listen / read / think about for yourselves what the President actually said and did on this trip. The brief sightseeing excursion was a matter of hours, not days. The Obamas also generally pay for their personal expenses, not the taxpayers. On the other hand he is President of the United States and they were staying at the US Embassy in Paris.

This is the "Reliable Sources" column which exists precisely to provide readers with silly pieces of fluff. So, for those of you who want "real" news, go read another section and stop complaining.

So many posters, all bitter and twisted.

Dare I ask would you write this stuff if George Bush and family stayed in Paris?

Can we draw the line on what should be minimum civil discourse about a sitting President? I think we can and, brother, did a lot of you flunk.

Also, why is the Wash Post wasting valuable news space on things like Garfield, Dilbert, Blondie, Sodoku, and the hockey playoffs when there are children going hungry around the world!!

I am so happy the Obamas are in office, but wow, we need to EDUCATE those educated people! They need to be educated about animal cruelty. It's bad enough that they didn't get a rescue dog, but to eat foie gras ... FORCE-FED DUCKS ... is simply inexcusable. I would love to see the Obamas join PETA so they could learn how to treat God's little creatures as they would want to be treated themselves.

Posted by: hellojackie | June 9, 2009 5:00 PM | Report abuse

I just want to say that the foie gras is cruel, is unfortunate that Obama has ordered this, because behind that "food" there is much cruelty, and for that the same production has been criticized and prohibitive in many regions.
