Mall Visitors Catch a Glimpse of Starlet

Reese Witherspoon on the Mall yesterday during a break in filming a new comedy by director James L. Brooks. (Johnny Gibbon)

Finally! After dozens of Owen Wilson sightings, Reese Witherspoon made her first appearance on the Mall yesterday shooting a scene for the new James L. Brooks movie. The diminutive actress -- wearing black running shorts, eggplant tank top, running shoes, hair in a ponytail -- was filmed running between the National Gallery and the Air and Space Museum. Reports a witness: "She's so cute!"

In the as-yet-untitled comedy, Witherspoon's character is wooed by Wilson, who plays a baseball player. Filming started Friday at Nats Park, where extras reported at 5 a.m. to jump up and down, high-five and hug -- over and over; they saw Wilson and actor Yuki Matsuzaki hang out by the bullpen. Stars are expected to be in town another couple of weeks.

When does a young actress stop being a starlet? Seems Reese Witherspoon has earned "star" or maybe just plain "actress" by her age and status? Oh, yeah, and that Oscar thing. Love Reliable Source! You two are starlets, uh, stars.

Um, I think after winning an Academy Award, one can no longer be referred to as a "starlet." Who's writing your headlines, some old geezer who thinks Nora Desmond equals "star"?
