Update: Rival "Benefactors" at Artomatic

The Benefactor saga continues. (Courtesy of Michael Auger)
The mystery of "The Benefactor" -- who sent dollar bills with identical fan letters to several Artomatic artists -- has only deepened after an alleged confession. Rebecca Gordon, a board member of the annual community art show, received an anonymous letter at the show Friday purportedly from an elderly widow and art enthusiast, conveying "regrets for any concern I have caused the artists."
Gordon posted it on the ArtDC.org forum, where it drew a collective awwww! Sculptor Tammy Vitale posted a message offering the lady a gift of her own artwork. That triggered a flurry of responses from someone claiming to be the real Benefactor, who in a forum posting and an e-mail to Vitale (both untraceable) called Friday's confession a "fake." Vitale yesterday got a follow-up letter in the mail: "Don't give them art for free if it's intended for me." We're hoping "The Collector," Artomatic's still-unknown prankster of 2007-08, will step forward to clear this all up.
