Injury Will Sideline Rehm for 'Several Weeks'

Everyone involved with "The Diane Rehm Show," be advised: Your shoes are a menace.

Friday morning, USA Today reporter Susan Page sat in for host Diane Rehm, and kicked off the radio broadcast with this announcement: "Well, I'm a last-minute fill-in here . . . Diane caught her heel in the hem of her slacks while she was dashing across the street yesterday afternoon, and she cracked her pelvis when she fell."

Not to downplay a serious injury, but . . . this sounds familiar! In July 2007, Arianna Huffington -- a scheduled Friday-morning panelist on the show -- ambled in late, on crutches. On air, Huffington said one of her "dreadful" high heels had gotten caught in a New York City subway grate, leaving her with a fractured ankle.

In a statement, WAMU (88.5) confirmed the 72-year-old Rehm's injury and said she will be recuperating for several weeks. "If you'd like to send her well wishes, please post them on 'The Diane Rehm Show' Facebook page, or email drshow@wamu.org," the statement advised. Guest hosts lined up for the next few weeks will include Page, as well as "Rehm Show" regulars Katty Kay, Frank Sesno and Steve Roberts.

"I know we all send her our best wishes for a speedy recovery so she'll be back sitting in this chair," Page said on the air Friday. Then, she turned to the day's panelists: "Let's start by talking about health care."

UPDATE: A WAMU rep says there's currently no information on whether Rehm will heal in time to host a scheduled trip to Egypt with WAMU listeners. That trip -- to Cairo and Alexandria, with a cruise down the Nile -- is set for late October, according to a tour brochure on wamu.org.

Why is the Post using a picture from 20 years ago? Diane Rehm sounds like she is 10 years older than God already.

@BO_Stinks:
It doesn't have anything to do with her age--she has a disorder that affects her vocal cords. She sounds pretty good, considering.

Older women should not wear high heels. Anthropologically, high heels raise the haunches which, in humans and in the animal world, is an indication by the female of suitability for reproduction. These women are too old for that.
