Ellen Goes 'Idol'

She can cut up a crowd -- but can Ellen DeGeneres judge music? The producers of "American Idol" are betting she can and giving the comedian, 51, the fourth judge's seat on the hit show, reports the Associated Press.

Fox made the surprise announcement Wednesday, slamming the door on any speculation that Paula Abdul would make a last-minute return before Season 9 starts in January. Abdul announced last month she was leaving amid a contract dispute; celebrity judges have taken her place at "Idol" auditions.

DeGeneres, who says she has no formal music experience but a passion for tunes, joins Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi at the judges' table. At a taping of her talk show to air Thursday, she said she had been "dying to tell everyone" and that she would now have "a day job and a night job." She co-hosted 2007's "Idol Gives Back"; now she'll be there every week. "Hopefully, I'm the people's point of view because I'm just like you," DeGeneres told the talk-show audience.

Ellen Degeneres is going to be the People's judge because she is just like me? Last time I checked, I was not a high-paid celebrity living in a LA mansion. Kills me when Hollywood celebrities try to compare themselves to us, the little people.
