He Knows Where All the Bones Are Buried

The latest celebrity salon to boast a White House client? Olde Towne School for Dogs, chosen to style the fur of Bo, the Obamas' 11-month-old Portuguese water dog. Bo has been spotted at the elite Alexandria pet center -- the same spot where the dogs of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy were groomed -- getting that distinctive cut characteristic of the breed.

Salon co-owner Sandy Mejias declined to talk about the first dog, so we asked the White House for an update on the family's most adorable member.

"We don't comment about the private puppy," e-mailed Katie McCormick Lelyveld, the first lady's press secretary. Nothing on the furry face that launched a thousand photo ops? "He's a dog," she wrote. "He doesn't have a public schedule."

But there are glimpses: The first lady takes him for the morning walk on the White House lawn; the president has the night shift. "We go out and we're walking and I'm picking up poop," he told a reporter. Bo made national news with his cameo during the president's interview with NBC's Brian Williams (impressive doggie handshake!) and sneaked back to the press section of Air Force One last month when the family went on vacation.

Bo's celebrity continues to grow: There were children's books about him just days after his arrival last April; Obama called him "the star of the family" during a party on the South Lawn in June. Last month he won the Teen Choice Award for celebrity pet, beating Katy Perry's cat and Vanessa Hudgens's dog, and was a sensation on Martha's Vineyard, where hats, T-shirts and a parade were dedicated to the first pup.

And yes, he's also a fashion trendsetter with his new red, white and blue leash that reads, "I [heart] Obama."

Which reminds us: Enough with the "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog" quotes -- at the very least, don't attribute the line to Harry S. Truman. According to Ralph Keyes in his "Quote Verifier," there's no evidence that the 33rd president ever said it. Keyes notes that Truman wasn't a dog lover and that he gave away two pups presented to him while living in the White House.

The first written evidence of the line? Samuel Gallu's 1975 play "Give 'Em Hell, Harry," in which the fictional version of the president says: "You want a friend in life, get a dog!"

Yeah and that is CLEARLY the dog's fault. All those people would still have jobs if it weren't for this adorable dog.

I thought the Obama girls were to walk the dog and pick up his droppings.

By the way, are the droppings trashed (a waste), added to the compost pile for the garden to enrich it (yea), or flushed (requiring flush water) to Blue Plains for processing into mature?

Caribatey is quite wrong. Clearly all those people out of work owe this to that cute couple Barney and little Mrs Beasley!!!!!!
