Shoot! Smoot Is Taken -- and Moving

Our bad! Earlier this week, we told you about Redskin Fred Smoot putting his Great Falls mansion up for sale, which we reasoned was because "a 30-year-old single guy doesn't really need 7,000 square feet."

Well, his house may be on the market -- but he's not. We've learned that Smoot quietly married just last week. His bride: Georgia lawyer and longtime girlfriend Summer Joy Hughes.

Smoot is one of the team's more outgoing and quotable stars, yet he's tended to keep his personal life private. When a reporter asked this week about wedding rumors circulating in the locker room, the chatterbox cornerback uncharacteristically clammed up.

But there are no secrets anymore, Fred: We found your wedding registry online. Which led us to Hughes, a South Carolina native who is also shy with the personal stuff but confirmed they wed last week, in a small ceremony -- about 40 guests -- at their Great Falls home.

So Smoot is expanding his household -- why move now? (He's asking $1.695 million for his pad, two years after buying it.) Hughes said they're going to make Atlanta, where she practices law, their new primary residence.

While Smoot has been shielding his lady from public view, he did let us sneak a peek at her last year when he gave our colleague Dan Steinberg a tour of his home to show off his softer side (decorative candles, dinner parties, fine art, a tiny terrier) for a washingtonpost.com video.

"You know, all great houses come with a great fiancee, and I have one over there on the couch right there," the Mississippi-born Smoot drawled as the camera rounded a corner to find a ponytailed Hughes, who shrugged and laughed. "Well, not all great houses, you still have to be a great man to go find her."

Very funny "The Dubb"! This is a good story. We'll try to use it next week.
