"Real Housewives" duo are surprise guests at White House dinner

Michaele, left, and Tareq Salahi arrive at Tuesday's state dinner at the White House. (Photo by Bill O'Leary/The Washington Post)

UPDATED 4:40 PM: White House says surprise guests crashed the state dinner; were not invited. Read more here.

The big mystery of the state dinner: What were Tareq and Michaele Salahi doing there?

Until recently, the NoVa horse-country couple were best known for the financial upheaval and familial bickering surrounding his parents' Oasis Winery, and some drama surrounding the America's Polo Cup tournament they founded and a charity linked to it. But their current claim to fame: Michaele's likely role on "Real Housewives of Washington," for which Bravo's cameras have been following them recently.

They showed up at the White House Tuesday night looking suitably glam and were dutifully announced -- but they were nowhere on the guest list released by the White House. Tareq Salahi told us in an e-mail overnight that their connecton came from the fact that a team from India is scheduled to play the U.S. in his next polo tournament. "They are very excited in this first ever cultural connection being hosted on the DC National Mall since Polo is one of the primary sports in India," he told us. (Michaele's dazzling red-and-gold gown, he told us, was bought on their trip to India last year while laying the groundwork for the next match.) Will add more as we learn it.

To all the beautiful people:

Read this and, at your Thanksgiving table, pray for the soul of the nation victimized by a soul-less, out-of-control bureaucracy that is torturing and impairing thousands of American citizens and entire families via silent a microwave/laser radiation weapons attack system and government-enabled grassroots vigilantism:

The classical red, indian sari looks beautiful ... cute couple!

Posted by: mujeebb | November 25, 2009 11:54 AM | Report abuse

This is not a gown or a sari - it's a Lehnga - Choli with Dupatta. Long skirt, a short bodice like blouse (notice that little bit of the waist is showing) and covered up by a long flowing scarf. The red and gold is traditionally worn by brides. The lady did indeed look nice in the outfit. Lehnga is easier to wear - as it's a stitched skirt. Sari is much more trickier to wear as it is a piece of unstitched cloth wrapped in a particular way.

Maybe the regrets from Mitch McConnell and John Boehner freed up a few seats?

Posted by: dadada | November 25, 2009 2:47 PM | Report abuse

If they indeed crashed the event they should be charged with something, as that sort of thing can cause massive headaches for security personnel.

Posted by: Hillman1 | November 25, 2009 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Beautiful people??? Michaele and Tareq Salahi are just the "balloon boy" family of NoVa. Attention hogs. There is nothing beautiful about that.

fr Hillman1:

>If they indeed crashed the event they should be charged with something, as that sort of thing can cause massive headaches for security personnel.<

VERY true. There is NO excuse for crashing a PRIVATE event, no matter who crashes it. They should have been escorted off the grounds by security, and told to NEVER return. Plain and simple.

This Reality TV is becoming a nuisance.

I just wish they don't go away mad....

Posted by: rtagg | November 26, 2009 8:35 AM | Report abuse

I agree that these self-absorbed people are the "balloon boy" family of NoVa and should be ARRESTED and spend T'giving holiday through Christmas in jail to deter others from dangerous and/or stupid acts for publicity sake.

Yes, this is the level of "security" the racist Secret Service provides a black president!0

Posted by: thomasmc1957 | November 26, 2009 11:57 AM | Report abuse

Abusing White House security is not a harmless prank for some selfish way to get free publicity.

If that couple that claimed their son flew off in a ballon is charged for hoax, this pair should be arrested and thrown in jail.

Criminals. Trespassing is a crime.

Posted by: rlj1 | November 26, 2009 12:37 PM | Report abuse

If they weren't on the guest list, why were they formally announced upon their arrival?

Posted by: notindc1 | November 26, 2009 1:46 PM | Report abuse

This was a publicity stunt, pulled off with the full cooperation of the White House.

Posted by: Frazil | November 26, 2009 2:50 PM | Report abuse

The Secret Service needs to do some serious investigating. They weren't seated but they were admitted to the event.

scrivener - Who are you? Let's investigate you, too.

Couple of things ~

Just before 9/11, two foreign suicide assassins, who had camouflaged themselves as journalists murdered Ahmad Shah Masood in Afghanistan.

More recently one of the terrorists who tried to assassinate Saudi prince Mohammed Bin Nayef, hid explosives and detonator in his rectum.

Although security can't be perfect and still hold a party, AlQaida has certainly demonstrated its ability to find people who will do anything.

Tariq could have been up to anything.

I say XRAY HIM until his toenails smoke!

Posted by: muawiyah | November 26, 2009 4:15 PM | Report abuse

At the very least these people are trespassers and probably violated federal law as well. They should be arrested, charged with the appropriate crimes and vigorously prosecuted. This was not simply mischief, but an act that posed a serious threat to the security of President Obama and also designed to embarass the Obama administration. Every Secret Service agent and officer at the gate that these criminals were able to sleaze their way past should be summarily fired. Very simply if the names of the "trepassers" were not on the official guest list, they should not have made it past the initial checkpoint. Having encroached upon the White House Grounds without authority or permission to be there is a criminal act, not a publicity stunt. There is nothing funny about this. This kind of act encourages contempt, disrespect and hostility toward the President. Guns at rallies and people "sneaking onto the White House grounds" demands a strong response to discourage others from doing similar things with bad intentions. Lock'em up !

What if he was Sheikh Tareq Salahi?
There are more than a 100 million
Muslims in India and they are locked
in perpetual Terrorist Warfare with
the Hindu Population. This guy would not
have needed an edged weapon or a fire
arm to kill the president or vice
president. Even a lowly basic infantry
rifleman is taught how to kill an
enemy soldier without using a weapon.
This is a serious breach of security
even more problematic than Fort Hood.
What has happened to America? Are we so
totally PC that we've also forgotten
Islam's World Wide Declaration of
War against Israel, Europe and America?

WaPo tell your readers how they do not pay their vendors for services and how many lawsuits the have against them in local Virginia courts. Nice people pay for services, people need to make a living. These folks are wanna bees. They should be charged for their escapade! They are not socialites!!!

Who crashes a state dinner?! These people make me sick. Isn't there some law against this - why aren't they in jail? At the very least, send them a bill for the dinner to reimburse taxpayers. These people need to get a life. Only teenagers crash parties.

We are talking about a breach of security during a visit by another Head Of State - this is soooo serious. If we cannot show the ability to protect other Heads of State from other countries (not to mention our own President), our reputation worldwide will be shot. They had better make a Big Deal out of this.

Posted by: skimom27 | November 26, 2009 11:22 PM | Report abuse

Anyone who jumps a fence at the White House gets tossed in jail. They committed the equivalent act. These two deserve the same. They are simply poseurs trying to act better than the crazies;; which they are. To jail, now!

Posted by: Bill81 | November 27, 2009 12:21 AM | Report abuse

Is this a right-wing plot to undermine Obama? I wouldn't doubt one. Plus, any possibility a rogue secret service agent would let a harmless couple through to further the end of 1) isolating the President from contacts, and 2) try to make him look bad in terms of security (like he has any say whatsoever in what the secret service is doing?). Definitely the possibilitely of a SS disgruntled person/mole trying to make Obama look bad....

Has anybody ever notice that the Schulzstaffel and the Secret Service are both SS? Any similarity is purely coincidental?

All of the problems our country faces and these people are going to SNEAK IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND FLOUNCE AROUND as if it's CUTE?!?!! Are they High? We're they High when they thought this up? Quite frankly, I believe they should be prosecuted. And I don't want to hear a abuot these clowns in the newsmedia again until they are.

This couple breached a security circle as a publicity stunt. They should be charged with
any and all charges available to the legal system. Any postings on the internet by this couple should be taken down!!

The FCC should be looking at charges
against any network who assisted in this farce!
Then maybe the self-possessed would think again, before trying to grab attention this way!

Trash. Throw them in jail as an example so others won't try this nonsense. What an international embarrassment. Instead of focusing on the guest of honor, these two twits try to steal the limelight. Will the self-absorbed compulsion for celebrity and fame over NOTHING never end? This is shameful.

This krap shouldn't be tolerated. Book 'em.

Hey man, let's go to the White House dressed like repair men and tell them we're here to fix something. Yeah, that's it, then we can pull out a camera and take pics in the Oval Office and around Michelle and the kids, and be famous. Can't wait, this is gonna be FUN!

Why aren't these ding bats in prison yet? They broke in to government property on Tuesday and it's now Friday. They don't have the funds to post bail? Why are they not locked up? I know someone who committed a crime Thursday morning and he's been locked up for over 24 hours.

There's lots of these n'eer do wells floating around on the edges of what passes for "society" in D.C. Here's the interesting question: will Bravo's "Housewives" show feature anyone who actually lives in D.C.?

These bozos live in Front Royal, not exactly the classiest address in the area (no offense to my good friends in Front Royal).

She's a former Redskinette. They often disregard local law at their winery by playing loud, amplified music when their place is not zoned for it. Evidently it drives their neighbors crazy in this quiet, rural town. (Their winery is really much closer to Huntly than Hume.)

Posted by: steven09 | November 27, 2009 5:20 PM | Report abuse

Having endured the behavior of these two idiots while serving as a vendor to their winery, I hope their bad behavior, terrible decisions and outright disrespect for people is finally catching up to them. They were awful to their employees (many of whom remain unpaid to this day for work performed), vendors, winery neighbors and basically everyone else they couldn't climb on the coat-tails of. Tareq is an overblown windbag whose favorite greeting of 'cheers!' still makes me nauseous. Michaele sadly fell lock-step into his pattern and became just as bad as he is.
