Surprise 'Housewives' dinner guests not invited, White House says

A screen capture of a photo posted to Facebook after Tuesday night's state dinner.

UPDATED: See the latest version of this breaking story, updated through Thursday afternoon, here on

A couple of aspiring reality-TV stars from Northern Virginia appear to have crashed the White House's state dinner Tuesday night, penetrating layers of security with no invitation to mingle with the likes of Vice President Biden and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Tareq and Michaele Salahi -- polo-playing socialites known for a bitter family feud over a Fauquier County winery and their possible roles in the forthcoming "The Real Housewives of Washington" -- were seen arriving at the White House and later posted on Facebook photos of themselves with VIPs at the elite gathering.

"Honored to be at the White House for the state dinner in honor of India with President Obama and our First Lady!" one of them wrote on their joint Facebook page at 9:08 p.m.

But a White House official said the couple was not invited to the dinner, not included on the official guest list and never seated at a table in the South Lawn tent.

A woman describing herself as a publicist for the Salahis denied that they were interlopers. Pressed for details, Mahogany Jones sent a statement saying simply: "The Salahis were honored to be a part of such a prestigious event.... They both had a wonderful time."

While the White House offered no official explanation, it appears to be the first time in modern history that anyone has crashed a White House state dinner. The uninvited guests were in the same room as President Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, although it is unknown whether they met the Obamas and the guest of honor.

"Everyone who enters the White House grounds goes through magnetometers and several other levels of screenings," said Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service. "That was the case with the state dinner last night. No one was under any risk or threat."

Donovan said a preliminary internal investigation Wednesday identified "a Secret Service checkpoint which did not follow proper procedure to ensure these two individuals were on the invited guest list." He declined to give further details. An administration official said the White House will conduct its own review.

The Salahis, both in their 40s, showed up about halfway through the guest arrivals. A Marine announced their names, and the couple -- he in a tux, she in a striking red and gold lehenga (traditional Indian formalwear) -- swept pass reporters and photographers, stopping several times to pose for pictures. They then walked into the White House lower hallway, where they mingled with guests on the red carpet before heading up to the cocktail reception in the East Room.

Later, they posted pictures that seem to chart their course through the night: Michaele posing with Marines outside near the White House doors, and with Katie Couric and Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.) inside the mansion. In the East Room, the Salahis both cozied up to D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and his wife, Michelle.

But the best was yet to come: Once inside the dinner tent, they got pictures that appeared to show them with ABC's Robin Roberts, Bollywood composer AR Rahman, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, Obama Chief of Staff Emanuel (identified as "Ron" in the couple's Facebook photo caption) and two with a grinning vice president. The photos end there -- no shots of the Salahis sitting at a table, their seatmates or the post-dinner entertainment.

In this May 2007 photo, Tareq (left) and Michaele Salahi talk to Prince Charles at a polo match. (Courtesy of the America's Cup of Polo)

How could it happen? A former White House senior staffer -- who more than a decade ago encountered a crasher at one of the executive mansion's less-fancy parties -- offered this theory:

A savvy pair of crashers, dressed to the nines, might arrive on foot at the visitors' entrance, announce their names -- then express shock and concern when the security detail at the gate failed to find them on the guest list. On a rainy night like Tuesday, with a crowd of 300-plus arriving, security might have lost track of or granted a modicum of sympathy to a pair who certainly looked like they belonged there. If their IDs didn't send up any red flags in the screening process, they would be sent through the magnetometers and into the White House.

And yet, the former staffer noted: Someone from the White House social office should have been posted at the guest entrance with the guards.

Once visitors were in, no one necessarily would ask them for further identification. They could check their coats, give their names to the Marine on duty, walk past reporters and into the lower hallway where guests picked up their table assignments. They would pass the junior staffers handing out seating cards and walk on up the stairs for cocktails in the East Room.

Later, all guests were directed to head for the dinner tent on the South Lawn. Facebook photos suggest that the Salahis walked into the tent; it's unclear when they left. Reporters were cleared from the entryway by the time dinner seating got under way. There is no security checkpoint to leave the grounds.

The Salahis, longtime fixtures in local horse-country society, have recently seemed destined for national fame via reality TV. Michaele, a striking model-thin blonde who used to be a Redskins cheerleader, has been widely reported to be in contention as one of the "Real Housewives" in the forthcoming D.C. edition of the hit Bravo cable series. While Bravo has not officially finalized its cast, its cameras have followed the couple at numerous parties -- including the "America's Polo Cup" held on the Mall in September, part of a series of tournaments the Salahis founded a few years ago.

Abby Greensfelder, head of the local production team Half Yard Productions, referred questions about the Salahis to Bravo. A Bravo representative declined to comment.

Even before their brush with reality TV fame, the couple had gained some notoriety for a long-running feud with Tareq's parents, Dirgham and Corinne Salahi, over control of the family's Oasis Winery in Hume, Va. Last year, Tareq accused his mother's attorney of punching him; the lawyer was found not guilty. Court records show that Oasis filed for bankruptcy in February, with Tareq listed as "debtor designee." A note on the winery's Web site Wednesday promised a reopening for business in 2010.

The America's Polo Cup has also endured controversy, last year drawing a lawsuit from a Middleburg caterer over alleged non-payment. That suit remains unresolved.

Hours before the White House denied that the Salahis were legitimate guests, The Post asked the couple via Facebook how they happened to attend the dinner. Tareq responded: "India is the challenger in the America's Polo Cup World Championships June 11/12 2010, and they are very excited in this first ever cultural connection being hosted on the DC National Mall since Polo is one of the primary sports in India."

When pressed about why they did not appear on the official list, he added, "it was last-minute attending."

Staff writer Marissa Newhall and staff researcher Meg Smith contributed to this report.

Nothing like this happened under Bush's watch ...

JakeD, who would want to crash a White House state dinner to meet George Bush??

Even the Queen looks bloody thrilled...

Posted by: arancia12 | November 25, 2009 5:26 PM | Report abuse

Well, I imagine lots of people would have wanted to crash (if not just to throw shoes at him), but I figured White House security was just a little tighter than that.

I'm just a small town hick. I find it hilarious . . . the comings and goings of these wannabes in DC . . . . you mean to say that there were so many social climbers there that a tent had to be set up on the south lawn . . . . what a farce . . . . who is responsible for this kind of foolishness? Is it tradition? Is it Michelle? They are all a bunch of phonies.

Who's trashier... Michelle for hostessing a formal state dinner in a tent or the party crashers? Seems like a tie to me.

Rather poor reporting, even for the gossip column, if no more was learned. For example, will the USSS be chatting with them? The odor of horses and their product is heavy in the mist.

Didn't this happen at the inauguration as well?

I'm a smart person who likes to live in a country run by smart people.

But every time I turn on the news it looks like this country is run by a crew that couldn't even run successfully run the local 7-11 let alone the most powerful nation on the earth.

What a bunch of bumbling idiots! They can't even put the blame on someone else because it happened right in their house.

So kudos to Rahm and Big Joe Biden for yucking it up with folks they don't know.

...On the other hand there they are shaking hands and giving photo ops before they even got a campaign contribution or some other bribe. Doesn't look good for the DNC and 2010/2012.

I'm from a small town too and I actually READ the article about the State Dinner.

If you would have READ the article you would have discovered that the number of guests attending exceeded the room capacity of where the State Dinners are generally held.

If you would have READ the article you would have discovered that the dinner was held in tents on the South Lawn.

Since you are freely making and stating assumptions, may I add one about you? Chances are fairly good that you listen to the extreme views of phonies and social climbers and regurgitate what is being said.

Where ever there are more than two people together you are bound to have social climbers and phonies of all types. Please don't feed the stereotypes of small town folks.

Posted by: ledouard | November 25, 2009 6:42 PM | Report abuse

rmkraus; you mean social climbers like these:

The White House was decorated to perfection for an exclusive white-tie dinner on Monday evening, with President Bush and the first lady, Laura Bush, playing host to the royal couple and 130 other A-list guests. But the morning was reserved for the masses — or, at least, the masses with the kind of connections that warrant an invitation to the formal arrival ceremony on the South Lawn.

Lucky ticket-holders — more than 7,000 of them — began lining up at 7 a.m. to get in: women in fine hats carrying floral bouquets, little girls in chiffon dresses, boys and men in their best suits, toting cameras and craning their necks for a glimpse of what one called “the real deal.”

For the White House, the visit is a welcome break, a chance for a beleaguered administration to catch its breath and ready itself for what Mrs. Bush promised would be “a fun and festive evening.” She spoke to reporters on Monday afternoon, to offer a sneak preview of the evening affair.

The State Dining Room was brimming with white roses, vermeil centerpieces and pearl-handled flatware. The five-course menu, featuring “spring pea soup with fern leaf lavender,” “saddle of spring lamb,” and three different wines, was set. Dessert petit-fours were on silver platters for the press corps to taste. The chief florist, Nancy Clarke, was busy checking petals and stems.

The guest list, a must-read for Washingtonians, offered a smattering of surprises: Colin Powell, the former secretary of state, who openly criticized the administration over the interrogation of terror suspects; Senator Trent Lott, the Mississippi Republican who lost his leader’s job in 2002 after the White House helped orchestrate a coup; and Calvin Borel, the jockey who rode the winning horse at the Kentucky Derby. (The queen attended Saturday’s race.) Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, was the featured entertainment."

Gee, a beleaguered nation was entitled to a white tie dinner for a woman who was born, not elected, head of state during two wars that the President started. President Obama however is not entitled to feat a very important ally in a very important area of the world.

You conservatives sure have funny ideas!!

It is gratifying to know that even though the economy is in the toilet, jobless rate soars, the average American is struggling through tight times, and a decision has not been rendered concerning the war. Our president spends time and money hosting a gala event at the white house for his elitist friends. This definitely doesn't seem like a whole lot of CHANGE and sure doesn't offer me any HOPE.

Anything to be in the spotlight. They should at least know the players. Who doesn't know Rahm "Ron" that's just stupid and says a lot about them. They should be charged with trespassing and any other charge they can find and fine them heavily.

lighten up, folks -- news reporters have known for decades that security to pretty much anything can be breached if you look right, dress right and talk right. If Al Quida ever finds a white guy who fits into a tux, there could be trouble.

First, these two narcisistic (sp?) jerks should be arrested for trespassing. Second, I hope they are happy because some SS agents will either lose their jobs or be sent to N. Alaska to investigate credit card fraud for the rest of their careers. Third, whether they admit it or not their security breach endangered the president, the vice president and other key members of the US government not to mention the prime minister of India.

I can't stand people like this. And to boot, they ahve a "publicist?" Are these two clowns for real? Please, arrest these idiots and then instead of sticking the taxpayers with the bill to investigate why this occurred stick them with it.

It was a security breach and the first person that should be removed is the secret service spokesperson. Let me repeat this is not funny or amusing. When they are arrested for giving false information to get in, along with jail time, should be forfeit of any profits from all the tv exposure or interviews. The media these days are prostituting themselves for ratings. CBS even interviewed that Adam Lambert who performed his porn show on the AMA awards after ABC canceled his appearance.

Getting Back to the subject:

I know these 2 people. They use and abuse people to try and get as much as they can. They lie - it's been reported (mostly by Tareq's wife) that she appeared in Vogue, in "O", Elle, - we checked, unless she appeared when she was in vitro, she is not in those magazines as a model. As for being a Redskins cheerleader - cheering from the stands does NOT make you a cheerleader, that makes you a fan.

When a "crazed" person climbs over the gate of the White House they are arrested - why were these 2 allowed to schmooze and leave? Arrest them Please and throw away the key - they are a disgrace to this country and to the state of Virginia.

Hey "Real Housewives" Producers and advertisers - do you want to support a person who is a national threat to our security? All attendees to state dinners are vetted - sure Michaele & Tareq went thru screeners but they weren't vetted. this was a publicity stunt - a dangerous one - they lied to federal officials to get in to the dinner, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Of course, I'm sure they'll take the Bill Clinton defense about lying.......

I have had the misfortune of working with this couple. They are unbelievably insane. They have a crafty double act where they will pit people against each other. I can almost see Michele leaning in close to a guard going "I can't believe the woman with the clipboard didn't have our names! The Indian Ambassador personally invited us!".

She also probably did some blow in the Red Room.

Posted by: ianw2 | November 26, 2009 12:01 AM | Report abuse

The unauthorized visit by the Salahi's is at first comical. But in a larger sense, it speaks to the casual attitude the White House displays on terror, airport and sea port security, protection of our troops in the field of battle and the like.

The Salahi's look like a fun couple, wine. polo, charity events, reality TV. Heck, they should have been on the list to offset the likes of Mr. Mortgage, Chris Dodd, am I really the VP Joe Biden? Where is the Heinz Ketchup John Kerry. Mr. Republican Colin Powell and all the other Dems. What happened to inviting a few Republicans?

If they are truly a reality-TV aspiring couple, maybe they are hoping to land jobs in Holder's new Reality Show, "Live From NYC, The KSM Show", so they came to rub elbows with the leftist elite.

Tareq and Michaele Salahi were certainly dressed appropriately for the dinner, and with the likes of William Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, Maoists and Marxists receiving White House clearance, what's a few more surreal guests who fit right in to the Obama White House. I am sure the Secret Service no longer knows who is friend or foe under Obama, we have Navy Seals indicted for roughing up a terrorist they captured, the CIA under investigation and the Black Panthers who were arrested for voter intimidation released under the Obama Administration!

And KSM gets his reality show!

John Podesta and Bill Clinton flying to N.Korea to rescue Al Gore's reporters...

What a story for Maureen Dowd if she stays in the cold shower long enough(as she wrote ths week) to sober up from her "love affair" with this corrupt administration...

Biden and Rahm were both anxious to rub noses at the trough! It shows how eager the White House and it's followers are to welcome their faithful. Wasn't their a movie,"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"? Forget the striking model-thin blonde bimbo wife. I'm interested in the dude with the Arab last name, and whether next time he'll have a dynamite belt strapped on under his tux. Although given the hosts and their combined guest list, and their mutual denial that there is any such thing as terrorism or the need to have a war against it, it would be really good karma to have them all meet their makers because of the tender attentions of an Islamic jihadist, with lots of little bitty pieces of multi-ethnic American-grown hamburger.

What a mess.

Poor Obama. I don't know how much of this is down to faults in his admin or faults in the 24-hour news cycle, but there is a trend:

He has a big press conference in June on health care reform. But, the news takeaway? the black professor & the white cop. THAT was his fault when he foolishly answered that final question.

In September, he gives a big speech to congress outlining health care reform. The news: "You lie!" bellowed out by Beauregard in the chamber.

His first state dinner. Beautiful reception for his honored guests. Beautiful wife. Beautiful tent & dinner & entertainment. All goes well.

News? Reality teevee socialite crashes the party.

Can't win for losing.

(funny when I watched ten minutes of the guest arrival livestream, I noticed this couple. They were the rare guests who knew how to pose for the cameras. She did the stop-pose-turn to another camera-pose-smile thing perfectly. Cool as cucumbers.)

Yes my fellow citizens, this incident is very disturbing on a whole lot of levels. I agree with a previous post regarding "Obama cant't win for losing". Also, National Security, Homeland Security, the FBI, the CIA, seem at times, (a lot lately) to be dropping the ball. However, by the same token, President Obama and Mrs. Obama's staffs (official and unofficial) have been dropping the ball as well. POTUS and the citizens of the USA deserve better. Ft. Hood, Afganistan, exploited children... I digress. And Desiree Rogers, Miss White House Social Secretary, what, what what? Think simple Event Planning 101. For events, especially exclusive invitation only... HAVE YOUR PEOPLE AT THE DOOR along with security (USSS)with The List. Pre-arrange an OUTSIDE holding area for the "officially uninvited" guests until your STAFF can verify the guests status. Most times it's the little things that count. There will always be potential "gate crashers". This Breach of Security is very disturbing, especially for the current POTUS. Fortunately for us, all of us, this couple are self serving idiots. But suppose they were terrorist assasins, mentally derranged suicides, or reality show goofs! I wonder, would they have been able to get to the private quarters of the first family. There are a lot of unstable, scamming sleazy people out here. So, yes these people should arrested, charged and prosecuted for this escapade. Like another post said, "people get arrest immediately when they jump the fence". And BRAVO, you have have sunk so low, so fast, it's astounding! As for me, I will continue pray for the safety, wisdom, and courage of those who are elected or those who volunteer to PROTECT and SERVE.

How to Dine with Obama

I want to go to dinner at the White House in D.C.
Perhaps I will send email till I think that they agree
That is why America's by far the place to be
Blast off White House email and Obama will feed ye

Everyone's invited to a presidential dinner
You need not be a media hog nor obnoxious sinner
Care for dessert with Mick Jagger or the Pope?
Just blast off some email, and never give up hope

All you have to do is click SEND with your mouse
Repeat Step One, then pick out your favorite blouse
Then you leave a voicemail confirming you will be
Able to appear for America to see

Make it so confusing that a mix up could occur
Once you settle on the blouse, match it with your fur
Don't believe a word of your declined dinner wish
Check the box anyway for chicken, meat or fish

Do as the Salahi's did and when you do arrive
Seek out every picture op and give the Prez high-five
Look like you belong and soon the world will know
You, on a first name basis without a reality show
