Good afternoon, everyone. It's time for this week's new releases:

  • "Avatar," the James Cameron movie that took 10 years and $380 million to make, finally hits theaters today. Writes Ann Hornaday:

Is the dialogue corny? You bet. Does the movie go kerblooey in its final moments, during a ferocious, explosive firefight that will leave your eyeballs bleeding? Uh-huh. But Cameron has delivered what he promised with "Avatar": an ambitious, fully immersive cinematic experience.

  • "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" Specifically, that their movie -- a Sarah Jessica Parker/Hugh Grant witness protection rom-com -- is pretty terrible? It's "riddled with fish-out-of-water cliches," says Micheal O'Sullivan. "The Morgans are wealthy, liberal smarty-pantses. Their Hicksville hosts -- played by Mary Steenburgen and, for God's sake, Sam Elliott, sporting a mustache that almost deserves separate billing -- are working-class, conservative rubes."

  • "The Young Victoria" stars Emily Blunt as the English queen, covering the early years of her reign and her romance with Prince Albert, played by Rupert Friend. "Lovers of pomp, pageantry and extravagant period detail will find themselves exceedingly well served," Hornaday says.

Elsewhere in today's Style section: Peter Marks reviews "Young Frankenstein." Jessica Dawson previews "Cream," a uniquely curated auction exhibition soon to open at American University's Katzen Arts Center. And Dan Zak goes behind bars to see what the holidays are like for prisoners.
