This just in: John Edwards, still under the microscope
John Edwards came to Northern Virginia on Friday for a visit with campaign donor Bunny Mellon, flying on her private jet from North Carolina to Mellon's private airstrip, the Charlotte Observer reported Tuesday. While a federal grand jury investigates Edwards and his use of campaign funds to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter, two former prosecutors say the trip raises legal questions because the 99-year-old heiress is a possible witness in the case.
Mellon gave more than $3 million to an Edwards advocacy group during his 2008 presidential campaign and could be questioned about whether she paid some of Hunter's expenses. The visit, Charlotte lawyer Ken Bell told the Observer, opened Edwards to accusations of "trying to influence a witness or obstruct justice. It's dangerous and perhaps inadvisable, but not necessarily illegal." A spokesman for Edwards did not return requests for comment.
