Good afternoon, everyone. The National Enquirer was right: John Edwards is the father of Frances Quinn Hunter -- the 22-month-old daughter of Rielle Hunter, with whom Edwards had an affair while running for president.

"I am Quinn's father," Edwards says in a statement to NBC's "Today." "I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves. . . . It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter." Previously, when asked if the child was his, Edwards said "it's not possible." For more, jump over to 44.

In other news:

  • Conan O'Brien has reached a severance deal with NBC, which will pay him more than $33 million and will dole out another $12 million to his staff. O'Brien's last episode of "The Tonight Show" before Jay Leno takes it back could be Friday.

  • If you haven't already, spend some time with Neely Tucker's series on Carol Smith, a Maryland woman whose daughter was murdered six years ago. Tucker covered the case back then and ended up marrying Smith, so his account of one woman's grief and search for justice is acutely personal and heart-wrenching. Part two is out today and you can review yesterday's Web chat with Tucker.

  • Sad news for the arts: A new survey shows that although the number of arts organizations increased over a recent 10-year span, the percentage of people attending arts events declined.

  • The New York Times announced Wednesday that it will start charging readers to view online content in 2011.

  • For parents in our hyper-digital age, controlling kids' TV-watching and video-gaming is harder than it looks. Liza Mundy reports.
