Good afternoon, everyone. Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and you've no doubt been combing through them with delight (Kathryn Bigelow!) and confusion ("District 9." Really?).
Luckily, we don't have to reach for this year's main Academy Awards narrative: Bigelow, director of "The Hurt Locker," and her ex-husband, "Avatar" director James Cameron, are both up for Best Director and Best Picture, among several other categories. Bigelow would be the first woman in Oscar history to win Best Director. Cameron would be collecting his second Best Director statuette (the first was for that "Titanic" movie).
In other news:
Even as some kind of ironic, post-rap performance art piece, it stinks to high heaven. Worse than how it sounds, though, is what it does: It takes the best, and certainly the most self-affirming, rapper in the world and unmoors him, reduces him to an uncertain-sounding amateur on Van Halen karaoke night. The first time you hear "Rebirth" you won't think, "Wow, Weezy sure sounds different." You'll think: "What is Lenny Kravitz doing to that terrible Korn song?"
