Rielle Hunter speaks for the first time in GQ interview about John and Elizabeth Edwards, Andrew Young, and the big-money donors

(Our colleague Garance Franke-Ruta contributed to this report.)

For more than two years after Rielle Hunter emerged at the center of the John Edwards love-child scandal, the former campaign videographer kept quiet -- while Edwards denied fathering her daughter (before finally acknowledging it); while Elizabeth Edwards wrote a book describing her as an aggressive homewrecker; while campaign aide Andrew Young wrote one describing her as a loony, needy loose cannon.

Now, though, she's talking, in an extensive new GQ interview obtained by The Washington Post. It's a doozy.

Hunter says she's still in love with "Johnny" and believes he loves her. That they went to bed together the day they met. That his marriage was "toxic," that he feared "the wrath of Elizabeth." That it was Young's idea for the coverup in which he claimed paternity. That she had no idea how much money -- now the subject of a grand jury inquiry -- was being funneled to her from top campaign donors.

Elizabeth Edwards, who has separated from her husband, did not respond to a request for comment. Lawyers for John Edwards did not return e-mails for comment -- but in the interview, Hunter says that he is "supportive of me talking now."

The nearly 10,000-word Q&A is accompanied by photos of Hunter styled as Jennifer Aniston might be for a glossy mag: Glowing skin, blond hair, curled on a bed in a white shirt and strand of pearls, bare-legged with a glimpse of panties. There is also a picture of Hunter holding her daughter.

In an interesting twist, the interview was conducted -- mostly over two days in late January -- by longtime GQ contributor Lisa DePaulo, whom Young informed us he had briefly hired as a ghostwriter when writing his tell-all, "The Politician." That connection, later severed, was not disclosed in the GQ article. DePaulo told us she signed a confidentiality agreement with Young, which prevented her from discussing the work they'd done -- all of which, she said, was separate from her work with Hunter, whom she first approached via mutual friends in December, six months after her last contact with Young.

"There's nothing he shared with me that I would ever share," DePaulo said. "The questions I asked her about him I think anyone would ask her."

Where to begin? How about at John and Rielle's sensational beginning. After stating for the record that she's not getting paid for the interview, Hunter tells DePaulo that she met Edwards in February 2006 outside a New York City hotel, after "a mutual, unusual staring" at each other earlier inside the lounge. She was surprised to learn the stranger she was flirting with was Edwards, who had come across as a "two-dimensional geek" on TV. "You're so hot," she said to him. "Why, thank you," she said he replied. He begged her to call, she says; hours later, they met in his room.

"I. Was. Terrified," she told DePaulo. "You know, it was just this, this magnetic force field like I had never experienced."

Hunter expresses bewilderment about the money directed to her from wealthy donors via Young, starting in May 2007 -- the month her daughter Frances Quinn was conceived.

"Andrew would put $5,000 a month into my bank account. One month it was $6,000. He told me it was on the up-and-up and it was a gift. I had no idea where it was coming from," she said. She describes it as a "gift," rather than hush money.

Hunter takes aim at Young, who wrote in his book that he was pushed by Edwards to falsely claim paternity once the National Enquirer began sniffing around the story. Instead, Hunter insists to DePaulo, Young suggested the coverup himself. "I believe he loved Johnny more than he loved [his wife] Cheri," she says -- but also suggests that the Young family profited from the situation.

In a response to The Washington Post, Andrew Young expressed "empathy" for Hunter but also raised an eyebrow at her naivete about the donor funds.

Hunter recently sued him for the return of an alleged Edwards-Hunter sex tape the Youngs claim to have found. Judging from "the army of lawyers that represent her in her suit against me," Young said, "it is obvious to me that her attacks on me are orchestrated and paid for by the wealthy and powerful individuals most affected by this."

Hunter goes on to dispute many things that have been written about her: The business card she handed to Edwards when first meeting didn't say "Truth Seeker," it said "Rielle Hunter. Being Is Free." She wasn't dressed for a Grateful Dead concert, as one staffer told journalists, but in "a black Tse cashmere sweater, a Kenneth Cole suede jacket, and jeans." John never promised her a rooftop wedding featuring Dave Matthews.

There's a lot of New Agey talk -- John hasn't "fallen from grace... he's fallen to grace," and astrology told her he shouldn't run for president anyway. There's a lot of rationalizing -- John lied about her because "he was traumatized." There's some "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus" -- she couldn't go public sooner because she didn't want to "emasculate" her ex-lover.

And are they exes? Hunter says their relationship "evolved into something different" after the Enquirer ambushed him at their meeting at the Beverly Hilton in July 2008. Today, she says, she receives child support from Edwards but lives in a rental home. The Edwardses bought a home they thought would be ideal for her and Quinn in Charlotte, she said, but she cannot afford to live there.

UPDATED: GQ has now posted their Rielle Hunter interview.

Rielle Hunter pictures in GQ are "repulsive," she says, as GQ makes video of photo shoot available.

Marc Antony acknowledged the children he fathered with Cleopatra, and even married her.

But Marc Antony was far more of a man than John Edwards.

Edwards is history. Usually only FOX covers him now.

Oh lordie, lordie, lordie. I should become a "faux celebrity" advisor. The first thing I would do for any client of mine is to convince them that under NO circumstances should they take off their clothes for photographs if they ever want to be taken seriously as something other than a sex pot, floozie, or idjit. Do you hear me, Rielle? How about you, Levi? (exasperated sigh)

In the spirit of tabloidian commentary, I predict that John Edwards and Hunter will only be casual acquaintances in the future.

Mrs. Hunter is a piece of work. She has zero class, anyone that would destroy a family and still be proud to pose scantly for a magazine deserves all the shame coming down on her.

Here's a sterling example of the writing here, speaking of the Edwards family the last paragraph contains this abomination "The Edwardses" This is a major grammatical error.....when referring to people whose surname ends in s it is NOT necessary to add ANYTHING.

Don't know why I bothered reading this creepy stuff. John Edwards has the morals of a tomcat and his "mistress" is about as disgusting a predatory money grubber as I have ever had the misfortune to encounter (in print or in person). They richly deserve each other and shall rip each other to shreds in public far all to see....charming! I'm outta here!!

Imagine, Edwards was running for the Presidency of the United States while he was cheating on his wife, his family, and the public! I suppose we should be grateful for this womans "hey, look at me!" quest for money, "fame" and the front page. If Edwards lied and cheated on his wife, family, and friends...what would he do to us....the voters and taxpayers who might have voted that creep into office?!

Taking off your clothes to prove you are a serious Mother, reporter, and what else? She is a dippy, low IQ moron, who saved us all, from, God forbid, an Edwards presidency.(maybe)

Correction: And she even lies down in a suggestive pose with her pants untied, holding her child.

Addition: I predict this is a prelude to her next photo shoot with Hustler!

Should have been titled, "The Repulsiveness of Rielle Hunter".

What a terrible thing to say about Jennifer Aniston. Jennifer Aniston is a lady and always looks classy. This is not classy, it is trashy.

Ms. Hunter began her affair with John Edwards when she was very aware that he was a married man with a wife who had a serious illness. Real classy. Then golry be! She is surprised at all of the money that magicly appears in her accounts.
Oh year and she takes tapes of her and Edwards having sex. Just what are use did she intend to make of these.
Hope she enjoys her 15 minutes of fame.

Yes, the woman has no class....

But then, neither does Edwards... Apparently it didn't take him more than a few hours to dump his marriage, wife and kids.

I don't have any respect for John Edwards and even less for Lisa Druck AKA Reille Hunter. Please go back to Florida and leave this nation alone.

This is all I really have to say about this sordid mess:

OregonStorm comments, "Here's a sterling example of the writing here, speaking of the Edwards family the last paragraph contains this abomination "The Edwardses" This is a major grammatical error.....when referring to people whose surname ends in s it is NOT necessary to add ANYTHING."

Not only have you written in completely fractured English, but you are incorrect. "The Edwardses" is not an abomination; it's not even an error. How else do you refer to more than one person named Edwards? "The Edwards bought her a home" would be utterly wrong; that would be one person named Edwards referred to with an article, which is just weird.

Consider the Joneses. Consider any other noun, name or not, that ends with an S and is pluralized... the two Dorises or Charleses in your math class (or classes), the walruses, the ignoramuses. Consider refraining from pointing out so-called major grammatical errors until you learn to identify them.

The child looks horrified. How sad it will be when the child finds out how the mother's need for attention was more important than a child's right to privacy.

It is interesting that she talks about the wrath of Elizabeth, those type of statements go hand in hand with other women types. It is as though the affairs are not about having a relationship with the man, but the jealousy they have of wives. A lot of men will try to get away with stuff, but I am surprised at the lengths women go to hurt each other, and ruin families.

This is bunk. Is she trying to come off as pure? Innocent? Betrayed? A victim?

What about the video? What pure, innocent, betrayed victim allows a video to be filmed during sex? And what about birth control or safe sex? Why would any young mother allow herself to be photographed on a bed with her panties showing?

Do you really think she didn't know who John Edwards was? What's the deal about having a house that was bought for you and then stating you don't have enough money to live there? Does that translate into "Send me more?"

I've always thought Monica Lewinsky was a plant. After reading this article, I wonder whether this young woman didn't plant herself right where she wanted to be - on a gravy train. It looks like she got the gravy train with more on the way, but she does not have my sympathy.

And if she were dumb enough (which I don't buy) to believe that money deposited in her bank account were legitimate gifts, then I don't know how she could cross the street without getting run over.

Interesting that everyone's so emotional about a woman none of us has ever met -- or ever will meet. Edwards is history. She's a single mom. She needs to get funds together for the next 18 years of 'momhood'. She (apparently) has no sugar daddy in her life now. And Edwards is still rich. Sounds like a lot of situations in real life. And while she clearly lacks judgment for posing for the photos included in the article, women who have posed for similar photos under different circumstances have not come under the same sort of scrutiny. Posted by: mosthind | March 15, 2010 8:17 AM | Report abuse

Geez, what a bunch of whiney morons. I'm referring to most of the postings here.

First, the entire affair is a tragedy for Ms. Hunter, for the Edwards family, for Frances Quinn and for the American nation. I put most of the blame on John Edwards, who was in the power position of all these relationships and abused it while running for President. I am not one of those who conflate moral chastity with leadership ability; but the opportunities for blackmail that present itself were a real risk to the country, and the risk that he would have taken the Democratic primary and then this revealed, leaving us with President McCain, is almost as bad as John McCain selecting an inexperienced, politically shallow first term governor as his running mate.

I believe Ms. Hunter made some poor decisions, but I can completely understand how the relationship progressed, and I have great sympathy for her and her daughter. I have no less sympathy for the Edwards family.

Second, where are all the conservative, "family first" people who are running roughshod over Frances Quinn, who is undeniably innocent (and pretty cute!) and has to grow up without her father? It may be her mother's fault, but she has to live with the consequences.

Finally, once the affair was over, who can blame her for doing what she has to, to secure enough money to raise her child? She is obviously attractive and sex appeal sells. I believe John Edwards is a tomcat and should suffer accordingly, but I can at least understand the attraction. I hope Ms. Hunter finds a way to accept that John Edwards isn't going to ride in on a white horse, as the interview summary appears to suggest, and creates a warm home for her child.

All the haters that call Ms. Hunter names -- where are your supposed Christian values?

I think John Edwards has more responsibility in this affair than Rielle because he's the one who's married. As for the pictures, she was probably asked to pose the way she did by the photographer and I don't see the big deal. She is attractive and comfortable with herself and her body. I think many Americans need to get over their fear of sexuality.

I was a liberal Democrat for years and faithfully voted for the Party and swallowed the party line whole. But my antenna for detecting phonies remained active. When Edwards made his appearance as a VP candidate along with the phony John Kerry, I had enough. The Dems have another phony in the White House even now. He's about to add 40 million people to the health care rolls while he promises simultaneously to cut costs and not raise taxes. Liberal Democrats believe him!

What a bunch of idiots. I couldn't care less where John Edward sleeps. OK not sleeps, but really is it any of my or your business? 1/2 the married people in this country including those reading/writing about this story, cheat on their spouses. Let see Nixon, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Clinton, Bush, Roosevelt, all had girlfriends, or so I've read. The country survived, hell some would say prospered. I couldn't care less where men put their wandering widget. When are the fools complaining about other people's morals getting back under their rocks and let the world live?
Since marriage began people have been cheating on their spouses, and other people have been pointing fingers. Grow up, deal with it and move on. Grandma and Grandpa cheated as much then as now. Life is funny that way

Hey, ex-Libral comrade,

We all --- who is smart and with antenna way high all the time, readying to detect any liberal nonsense --- miss those glorious Bush-Cheny years so much!

We all wish the world and America could live in that glorious time-capsuled era, a golden era in world peace, prosperity, democracy, liberty, and all that...

It was a time when/where bad guys pissed in their pants, when our righteous leaders names are mentioned!

If that other communist Liberal president, FDR, had not ruined for all future's great presidents, like Bush, by being elected, through illegal tactics, to office 4 times?... and if the Constitution had not been changed to stop such illegal tactics, our Great George W. Bush and his fearless Vice President, Dick Cheney, would have had a few more terms,,, and by the time they leave office, no evil doers, here in America or any whre around the world, would be left alive! Our righteous leaders, in Bush and Cheney, would have killed them all!

Librals are always ruining good things! I am no longer a Libral, either. I am now the most conservative, God loving, and smartest man you'd ever meet or want to meet! A completely reformed man, due to reason AND God!

You know.....I was GOING to read the article. Was interested in what she had to say about herself and her choices. Then I caught a glanced of her picture...and then all of them. The one with her naked under a man's shirt, and her legs spread a little open; the one with her lying down on her back, her zipper and button fly open...and that was it. She lost 100 PERCENT credibility. This woman talks WITH her sexuality...not her brains. She's nothing more than a high-priced hooker, far as I'm concerned. No wonder Elizabeth can hold her head up so high and proud now...look at what appealed to her sleazy EX-husband. I feel terrible for that precious little baby having to be raised by that type of woman and man.

Politico.com definitely got the better scoop on this news. Inquiring minds want to know: Was the $6000 a month from unknown donors to Rielle Hunter the very first Democratic subsidy dealt out under "Healthcare
Reform"? Presumably it paid for buying health insurance to pay for her child's prenatal and neonatal care. Just think, Edwards was seriously running as a Presidential candidate in 2008 and had he won the election, he would have been President by now.

The only effective health insurance "subsidy" the Democrats have ever paid and spent on health insurance premiums might just be that $5000 or that $6000 a month deposited in Rielle Hunter's bank account by unknown donors to help pay her expenses.

The Democrats are going to take care of themselves and that is about it.

WOW, there are lots of comments here about Hunter. I think she allowed herself to be photographed in a far inappropiate way. As for the things she has said about Young, I think she is as big a lier as Edwards. For some strange reason, I believe Young's story of what happened. Young was so close to Edwards all these years and his right hand man. Now that Edwards has his butt in the wringer, he turns on Young and wants everyone to believe Young is a lier. Edwards started all this and wanted Young to lie for him and now Young is the bad guy. How many of you all have had things like this happen to you.....not the adultry thing...but other things. You suddendly find yourself on the outside looking in and wondering what happened. Some people blame Hunter for breaking up Edwards home, but from what I have read, Hunter is not the first one he has had an affair with. Edwards did this to himself...he had lust for her in his heart the minute he met her and he had to do something about it. They are both guilty. Now, I don't know how she would expect anyone to take her serious being photographed like that. This make her look mindless, and no more than a playboy ho. Hunter, if you read any of these posts, please put your clothes back on and look like a responsible mother and classy woman you want to portray.

Yet another sad example of the deterioration of the sanctity of marriage. Reducing John Edwards irresponsible and selfish choices down to a fear of his wife's wrath does not justify Ms. Hunter's or Edwards adultery. What gives Ms. Hunter the right to publicly bash a woman whom she violated? And what a horrible message that both Edwards and Hunter sent to their child. I am amazed at the boldness of them both and their sense of justification in this situation. I also wonder why the media would allow her an opportunity to further pollute American minds with her immoral, immature opinions and rationalizations and subject an innocent child to public scrutiny.

2) I am not understanding why everyone is calling her a whore. I don't know her history. However, I know she has had this one affair. That makes her a lot of things. But a whore?? Isn't John the whore? He was the one running between two (or more, we don't know) women. I am so sick of people always labeling the woman the whore. The same thing is happening in the Tiger Woods situation (granted some, but not all, the women there are porn stars).
3) Everything being said, I just think she sounds like she has a screw loose.

Noting all the posts here. I'm even more puzzled that the dozen+ women that knowningly slept with a married man with children [Tiger Woods] were pretty well ignored by the public as doing anything wrong. Was it the amount of wealth that Tiger had that was justification for those women hopping in bed.

And it wasn't as if the women didn't attempt to capitalize after Tiger was found out. They were hitting the talk show circuit.

The following Republicans are still in office.

Senator John Ensign
Seanor David Vitter
Governor Mark Sanford

Not only did "you" buy into these guys you keep them in office.

Rep Larry Craig finished off his term. To the disappointment of the GOP leadership perhaps, but he stayed on.

I am not defending Edwards or Ms. Hunter but at least he did not become president. Doesn't everyone remember a president who angrily denied having sex with "that woman" even if he had had sexual encounters with her in the Oval Office while she was a White House intern? He finished his second term with high approval ratings.

Edwards admitted only when his aide who had agreed to claim to be the baby's father as part of a cover up, turned against him. The impeached president admitted only because of DNA evidence from a stain on the dress of "that woman". Could someone tell me why we treat them differently?

Why treat them differently? Well, for one thing, Clinton was President, Edwards was "running for President" and not holding at that time any kind of government job, be it trash collector (no pun intended...although...) or Senator or President.
Secondly, Clinton was NOT impeached; he was censured, but the Congress stopped short of impeachment.

There is something fundamently wrong with the treatment of women in the U.S.
The media or PR gurus seem to take advantage of women' insecurites to expose them to the world as sex toys. Where is the respect? Rielle Hunter was probably convinced to do this PR shoot as was Milley Cyprus, Lindsey Lohan,Jennifer Anniston (after she turned 40) and others.
Women don't really know where to stand. Look what happened to Hillary Clinton a extremely smart and capable woman, a first lady who dared run for President and was portrait as insolent and the target of sexual jokes. Or Sarah Palin who was a Governor and nevertheless was degraded and portrait as a mindless sex symbol.
However, the ones who bare some skin seem to be favored and get ahead, so public women searching to improve their images fall for the advice of media professionals who have one word in mind: "sale".
I applaud Elizabeth Edwards for remaining strong and I feel sorry for Rielle Hunter who seems desperate and trying to find her way. Before passing judgment and labeling some women as only good for men's entertainment, please take a good look around and start showing some respect for women in general.

All of these folks with the nasty comments must be saints -- I'm sure of it -- or they wouldn't have the nerve to make such horrible judgmental comments about people they don't even know. I'm always amused by these pre-Victorian notions that seem to apply to everyone else but you. I do share many of the underlying sentiments -- I'm happily married and woe the day that somebody steps into that relationship. However, she wasn't married -- he was -- a fact she may not have even known for awhile had he not been who he was. She is free and single and can have relationships with whomever she wants; as the married party, he should have known better. As for destroying a family, she had no family to destroy -- he did -- and by all accounts, it was well on its way to destruction before she even showed up.

She's also free to give all of the interviews she wants -- he certainly hasn't hesitated and neither has Mrs. Edwards. Indeed, she waited 4 years and after everyone else had had their say. To say that she is being selfish is a big so what at this point. As for her legacy to her child, how she got here is no longer relevant and she has an entire lifetime to care for that baby and create that legacy.

I do agree with everyone that the revealing photographs under these circumstances didn't help her much -- then again, she's free and single and just as able to pose in anything she wants. Numerous others do in far less, why not her?

An "upgrade"? Hunter over Elizabeth?

Have you seen pictures of Elizabeth in her twenties, before John made her into the Taj Mahal lady, a baby machine?

Elizabeth was a beauty; not only that, she had a mind keener than John's, although they decided early one she would have babies and he would chase money. And each did their part well.

But an "upgrade" from Elizabeth to Hunter?, Hunter is, remember, someone who can't even finish shooting a cheap 10 minute videography segment before she lost her pants in the local motel!

Now, if you're talking purely body or facial looks,,, then great great grandfather Hugh Hefner really does have all the "upgrades," since it is the GIRL's chest and butts that he went for, not something in the head (of course, no doubt, those teens and early 20's girls since the 1960's... each must have thought they were purrrty smart up there to snare hugh for a few months, before he moved on to the next teen or twenty something Playboy doll...

But Hunter is not really as beautiful as Elizabeth, in their respective twenties.... and with Elizabeth's brain power... Hunter is really no more than a blow-up Playboy type blonde doll...

Giving her "first interview" posing half naked - right.

This was truly orhestrated from day one= From bringing Edwards down politically, destroying his marriage and his life.

Does "Fatal Attraction" ring a bell.

Having an affair is bad enough, but actually getting pregnant, saying the things she does, and actually moving to be close to Edwards, how low of John Edwards to fall into a bottomless disgusting pit, while his wife is dealing with cancer.

Thought he was a better human being than that.

Wonder what this child will think when all is said and done. It's disgusting!

I blame John Edwards - not Hunter.

A nice-looking married man away from home often encounters single women looking out for a lover. Most men respond to flattery. And that's all it took to get Edwards into bed with an attractive woman he barely knew.

But a married man has a responsibility to his marriage and an serious obligation not to deliberately deceive his marriage partner just for a momentary boost of his ego.

The sexy photos depict Hunter as a woman desperate for a marriage partner. If not Edwards, anyone willing to pay the bills and help raise her daughter will do at this point.

It's a sad commentary on the moral state of this country that so many people take marriage vows, mostly in church, which they so casually ignore when an opportunity for self-gratification presents itself.

As far as deceiving some Democrats go, Sarah Palin's example of how to counsel a daughter about premarital sex showed some Republicans that they were also backing the wrong moose.

Good grief- this story is tailor made for today's sensationalistic media. A half naked bimbo, a prominent politician, and a wife fighting cancer. I bet news outlets around the country are thinking they died and went to heaven. What a sick society we live in. Don Henley summed it all up years ago with his song "Dirty Laundry".

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do "The Innuendo"
We can dance and sing
When it's said and done we haven't told you a thing
We all know that Crap is King
Give us dirty laundry

Everyday, our society is being ruined by Jezebel like her. Man, I'm shaking my head in disgust. I hope and pray they indict John Edward and throw him under the pen. Take Newt Gingrich with you. I am sick to death of snitches. I'm sick of people famous for being infamous. I'm sick of tell-alls. I'm sick of bad behavior to explain bad behavior.

It's a given that people are going to behave like sexual animals, and I'm sick of them too. But fighting that urge is a lot harder than fighting the urge to capitalize on it and share the details with the world.

Women like Ms. Hunter would go away if there was such persistently prurient interest in the gory details of their pathetic lives.

LOL somehow I think that she would be fine with that.

She doesn't have to worry about anyone not taking her seriously. That woman is definitely hot enough to be seen as a sexpot and a "floozie" and *still* be taken seriously. Unlike, say, Jamie Grubbs or Monica Lewinsky.

Somewhere JE is smiling, I'll tell you that.

....seriously, anyone looking at these photos or reading this story and heaping hate on this man and woman?

The first thing you have to do is stop and think: "am I doing this *mainly* because I'm jealous, or possibly afraid, or even both?"

Ok Edwards proved that his marriage vows weren't enough to keep him out of bed with other women, much less to keep him by his wifes' side. But you have to admit she's not looking all that bad. And I suspect the main problem is that a whole lot of people are afraid that in this situation, they would end up in the same position.

The really big thing about John Edwards is that Rielle was hardly the only piece that he was getting on the side. If anything separates him and Eliot Spitzer and Bill Clinton from Mark Edwards, that's what it is. Though of course it's always possible that Mark Edwards has more than one mistress also. And certainly at least he didn't pay to have his little "issues" indulged by a professional.

...I mean honestly how can you say that a credible Presidential or VP candidate in his mid-30s or early 40s isn't going to get a ton of offers from attractive women? He probably had to beat them off with a stick. So a few of them got through, are you surprised by this?

No what surprises *me* is that he even stayed with his wife as long as he did, really. Most men would have been long gone, what with the chemo and all, are you kidding?

So I have to say, call them "skanks" if you want, I just want to see who wouldn't have done what they did if they met someone who made them stop and stare on the street...and they stopped and stared back. That's what lust is all about.

Some years from now, no doubt, we'll hear about the true-life actions of Obama and the people in his administration.

Much more troubling than any of this, however, is that the country and the economy are being mismanaged on a colossal scale and the voters will have to pay for it.

Now, what was Ms. Hunter saying again about "Johnny?"

I don't understand why Ms. Hunter, M. Lewisky and the "other" women associated with Tiger Woods and others attract such notoriety -- and at times even sympathy. I also don't understand why more feminists aren't speaking out on woman's inhumanity to woman; especially when children are involved. As women, we have the power to say no and support other women's relationships and families. The men can only do what we allow. Money and power are attractive and intoxicating; but for Hunter to villify Mrs. Edwards, the wronged wife, to defend her own lack of integrity is pretty low. It doesn't matter if Mrs. Edwards is Cruella's evil twin, she (and her children) were there first. Show some compassion and respect, you may find yourself in a wife's shoes one day!

As a two time breast cancer survivor, I can fully appreciate the loss of self esteem and worry on Elizabeth Edwards part. Here is a woman who lost a child, goes through a horrific disease, raises a family while supporting an egomaniacal jerk for a husband. She should be canonized for enduring this whole nasty episode. And Rielle, dear, here is hoping you never have to suffer with breast cancer like your paramour's wife. While English grammar perhaps has little to do with Ms. Hunter's story, I nevertheless feel it necessary to observe that Oregon Storm is in error in stating that it is grammatically incorrect to pluralize a family name ending in "s" by the addition of "es." The general rule is that the "es" is usually added to a family name ending in "s" in order to pluralize it. Many people do not understand this rule; few publications and still fewer individuals apply it correctly. One problem that often arises is in the context of a surname in which a consonant precedes the final "s". In such a case some folks feel that the surname is "already" plural. I suggest that further confusion on this point arises when one is trying to pluralize a surname in which a vowel precedes the final "s", such as Douglas, for example. We wouldn't say "The Douglas (meaning two or more members of the same family) went to the seashore." Instead, we should say "The Douglases went to the seashore", just as we would say "The salacious behavior reported in GQ had disastrous consequences for the Edwardses."

Ms. Hunter:

Please - Get thee to a therapist. Try avoiding anyone with a professional practice that includes new wavey ideas like "Being is free." What a crock.

You deliberately approached and baited a married man who was running for President with the promise of an immediate sexual liaison.

(John Edwards is no saint, either.)

Please stop crying that "...I went over to his room, and I walked in. And I. Was. Terrified."

You weren't terrified. That's a load of public relations BS that your publicist has dreamt up for you to spout and which you have happily incorporated into your re-telling of events.

You were excited. You were enthralled. You knew exactly what you were doing.

You didn't care that John Edwards had a wife of 30 years standing now dealing with terminal cancer.

You didn't care that John Edwards already had three children at home.

You didn't care that your illicit sexual relationship would destroy any chance that John Edwards would have, not just in that Presidential campaign, but in ANY political campaign from now until the end of time. John Edwards couldn't get elected Dogcatcher now.

(John Edwards is no saint, either.)

You have proclaimed Elizabeth Edwards "toxic."

Really? You're the toxic one, and I hope that someone sane in your inner circle has the good sense to point this out to you.

You spout invectives and diatribes about Elizabeth Edwards. Toxic. Toxic. Toxic.

Do you now expect that her children will have anything but anger and disdain for you and your "last-chance-at-motherhood-and-the-gravy-train-for life" illegitimate
daughter? I hope they ignore her and freeze her out financially, emotionally, socially.

You posed for provocative photographs that border on soft-porn. And now you weep that you didn't have control and just "went with the flow."

You want to cast yourself as the victim in all situations when really you appear to be a no-talent provocateur.

At least Nell Gwynn (after being mistaken for Charles II's Catholic mistress Louise de Kéroualle) had the good sense and common decency to proclaim: "Good people, you are mistaken; I am the Protestant whore!"

You are a whore, Ms. Hunter. And not a very good one at that.

Only one who has figured out how to turn an act of betrayal into a lifetime of financial support and never-ending notoriety.

Stop complaining about the paparazzi on your doorstep. You have a neon sign emblazoned across your front lawn and your life blinking "Come on in for a good time."

Enough said...

Poor thing, she obviously went gunning for Edwards despite his being married, she managed to get herself pregnant, even though she is an adult and a presumably intelligent woman. Now she is crying about the horrid photos that were taken of her. Was she drugged and they changed and/or removed her clothes while she was unconscious? This whole thing has been a travesty. The only good that came out of it is that the Public now understands how lucky it was to have Edwards lose out in the primaries. I was seriously considering voting for him. So in that regard, I guess I owe her a debt of gratitude.

I think John Edwards bears the brunt of the breakup of his marriage. Rielle wasn't married, John *was.*

I agree that the marriage was probably over way before Rielle. However, he is a grown-@ss man and should be able to communicate like an adult, not live in fear of his wife (who probably is not an angel either).

However, for Rielle to claim that getting $5000/month for being pregnant with John's baby was not "hush money" - girl, please don't insult my intelligence.

And the photo shoot was posed. Did she not know she wasn't wearing pants?

She finds John's flaws cute, while castigating Elizabeth's flaws. That's new love for you. It won't be so cute when she wakes up and realizes she is in a relationship with a delusional man-child.

I literally just signed up to this site so I could say "thank you," to the author above for a very hearty laugh today. I nearly ruined my laptop after taking a sip of coffee while reading it. LOL!

Now onto more serious things. I know a lot of people have taken Wash Post to task for even printing this story, and perhaps there is some merit there. However, I happen to see this as a cautionary tale to all men and women, single or married, about the foolishness of conducting oneself in all manners unseemly. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, and Ms. Hunter is experiencing the reality of that. John Edwards as well, and probably much more after this latest train wreck. Unfortunately, it's the innocents that end up suffering the most and so needlessly.

Personally, I think GQ (being a magazine for men), did a great job of crafting this piece into a subtle warning to their readers to learn from JE's colossal mistake. "This is your future," should you drop your boundaries and your drawers. I just don't think Reille has clued into it yet, if she ever will.

Oh, and to those who have expressed how hot she looks on her daughter's bed. Stop and picture your own mother, wearing the exact same thing, with her legs spread ON YOUR BED! If that image doesn't scar you for life (no matter how good she looks), then I don't know what will.
