Dan Snyder's caught the movie bug. The Redskins owner, who went into the producing business with Tom Cruise, is quietly trying to buy what remains of Miramax Films, reports the L.A. Times. The asking price is $700 million, give or take a few million. The artsy film house co-founded by Harvey Weinstein, and eventually sold to Disney, closed down in January after being responsible for Oscar-winning movies like "Shakespeare in Love," "The English Patient" and "Chicago." What's the Miramax connection? Well, Weinstein sits on the board of Snyder's Six Flags, which filed for bankruptcy last year. A spokesman for Snyder could not be reached for comment.
Singer Sinead O'Connor is lashing out at the pope again. In response to a papal letter apologizing to Irish victims of sexual abuse by priests, O'Connor said in a statement that the Vatican's strategy "is to sell the bishops down the river . . . making it seem (and they will try this in every country) that the Irish hierarchy were acting independently of the Vatican. That is a lie. . . . Yesterday's letter is a study on the fine art of lying and betraying one's own people." Pope Benedict avoided any direct mention of the abuse scandal on Sunday, his first public address since releasing the letter.
