Kitty Kelley's new book: Oprah has a diva snit in Washington antique store; "does not do stairs"

The image of Oprah as America's benevolent earth mother is about to take a serious hit, thanks to -- who else? -- biographer Kitty Kelley, whose book on the talk show queen comes out Tuesday.

"I was astounded that the woman who seems so open and uninhibited is really so choked by secrets," said Kelley, who interviewed more than 800 people and spent four years researching the book.

In a short excerpt obtained by the Reliable Source, Oprah comes off as a demanding diva unwilling to lift a finger -- or foot -- if she doesn't feel like it.

About five years ago, she contacted Georgetown's L'Enfant Gallery, known for high-end antiques, because she owned works by portraitist John Kirthian Court and wanted to see more. Gallery owner Peter Colasante bought three paintings ($60,000-$80,000 each) and had them shipped from Portugal to his shop for Oprah's consideration. He received strict instructions for her short visit, along with a partial schedule: "2:17 p.m.: Oprah's limousine arrives at L'Enfant Gallery, 2:20 p.m.: Oprah walks into gallery...."

On the appointed day and time, two limos pulled up and Oprah went into Deborah Gore Dean's shop across Wisconsin Avenue. After waiting 30 minutes, Colasante walked over and found his famous client berating Dean. He told Oprah and her entourage (secretary, pilot, hairdresser, makeup man, guards) that he had other appointments scheduled and she needed to honor her timetable.

"Oprah does not walk," she told him, referring to herself in the third person. "Who is this guy?" Then she started screaming at her staff, but finally agreed to cross the street and come through his front door.

"I just don't feel it," she told him. "The vibrations aren't right."

"You'll feel them once you see the paintings we've assembled for you," he said, pointing up the stairs where Court's art was hanging.

"Oprah does not do stairs," she said.

Things went rapidly downhill from there: Colasante's partner hissed that maybe Oprah could use the exercise (unclear who heard), and she stormed out in a huff without buying anything.

How accurate is Kelley's version? Dean, who declined to be interviewed for the book, said she doesn't discuss her clients. Winfrey spokeswoman Lisa Halliday declined to comment.

"Kitty got it just right," Colasante told us this weekend. "I was somewhat dumbfounded to see this side of Oprah. I've been in business 37 years, and I've never seen anyone behave that way before -- least of all anyone well-known, who are generally pussycats. We had a wonderful time with Barbra Streisand." (He eventually sold two of the three Court paintings.)

No telling what else Kelley has unearthed or who gets to hear it: Her book has an initial printing of 500,000 copies, but she said some major news organizations have refused to schedule interviews for fear of Oprah's power and displeasure.

But Kelley told us she's still a fan. "I love her -- she is a biographer's gift. I started the book the same way I ended up, with a great deal of respect for her."

Perhaps if Winfrey "did stairs" she wouldn't be a 300 pounder.

That's a very interesting tidbit about Ms. Winfrey. I heard something over the weekend about Oprah doing an interview of that woman that John Edwards had an affair and a child with. Surely I heard wrong. I've always given Oprah Winfrey much more credit than that. A common wmore??? Really??? Oprah Winfrey is giving THAT WOMAN a forum??? Has she lost her mind? Apparently she's lost her sense of decency and decorum. And for what? No one is interested in that woman, or even in that despicable sleazebag John Edwards either. He, at least, USED TO BE someone. SHE IS NOT, and we don't need to have her held up as some sort of victim or something by Miss Media Superstar. Is this network thing she's starting sapping all her energy and common sense? I thought she was the richest woman in the world anyway. Surely the 10 bucks this woman could bring in is not going to make a big difference in Oprah's lifestyle. She's rapidly losing her golden aura. What a shame! Shame on her!

Of course these same corrupt liberal/progressive propaganda outlets had no trouble getting Kitty on their shows when she wrote a book about Bush.

Kelley's book will be one of my purchases. Opray has contributed mightily to Obama, and he owes her. Most interesting was the Denmark incident, where he flew AirForce One for a 24 hour visit to the Netherlands meeting about the upcoming Worlds Fair. The city of Chicago lost its bid, much to Oprah's dismay, because she owned particular property which location would have greatly increased her income had the World's Fair been in Chicago. How much did the U.S. taxpayer pay for this boondoggle?PLENTY.

First, I doubt there is one extremely successful businessperson who is a "pussycat." It's a tough world.

Second, this story does not quite make sense to me. I assume Oprah must walk to get various places, so the words Kelley attributes to her just don't make sense.

Third, people who come on here and make juvenile, "fat jokes" should know how small they look to others who post here. I don't find a person's issues with obesity very funny, but that's me.

lostdogrwd101, it's not everyone woman's desire to have kids. Frankly, I admire Oprah for not having children when she obviously put her career first. Instead of leaving the kids for the nanny or other siblings to raise.

Oprah is really living the American dream to come from a poor, abusive family to be the most successful woman in show business. Whatever petty, insignificant charges Kitty Kelly has thrown together to sell a book, doesn't diminish Oprah's success at all.

Posted by: Aerowaz | April 12, 2010 10:54 AM | Report abuse

I used to be a big oprah supporter/admirer, but her role in helping get the inept, anti-American obama into office ended that.

If she can admire and support that socialist/radical, there's a huge disconnect with her positive image.

It's also telling that both oprah and obama have such sway over the media that news is stifled in favor of power propaganda.

If they are not willing to put their egos aside for the duration of an art sale to accomodate a customer which would likely bring them tens of thousands of dollars simply by walking through the door, then someone else will.

drzimmern1, I would like to refresh your memory of George W. Bush's interview with Oprah and the little kiss he gave her which probably allowed him to claim the Presidency. Oprah came from no where like any other billionaire. None of them was born with money.
Kelly should be happy for making a living through dipping her nose into famous people lives because the first amendment allows her to do so.
If she is worried about perfection she should live a perfect life of herself and leave the imperfect Oprah alone.

What did she say when she was (unsurprisingly) found innocent of any slanderous remarks? "Free speech rocks!" Funny how she has her employees sign that non-disclosure document. She strikes me as a non-benevolent dictator who'd throw a big hissy fit if you don't march faster and smile more. Too many viewers have become her own drones. I agree with a previous post. Anyone who has a monthly magazine that has to have her face on the cover every month is a narcissistic diva. Why people think Oprah is the earth mother and a woman to be trusting is beyond all reason. She is a talk show host! Her excesses are well publicized. Her demands are ridiculous. Sure she came from nothing. But she has forgotten where she came from because she acts like she is royalty. These divas who think that life revolves around them are the most self-absorbed people. I will never understand people (mostly women) who feel that they must watch these TV talk shows and think that these talk show hosts are such knowledgeable, trustworthy people. I'll take the woman who runs our Food Closet at our church as a great women of stature over Oprah any day.

Actually, no-one east of the Statue of Liberty and west of the Golden Gate gives a toss about D'Oprah.

In Hong Kong, where I live and China where I spend about three days a week, they've never even heard of her ("what's an oprah?"). Exactly. And, that's about a fifth of the world's population.

With Kitty's revelations, I guess they can now be forgiven in Paris retailing where she pulled a hissy fit after (a) they didn't know who she was, and (b) wouldn't open the shop after hours to let her in. Maybe you should have given them a refrigerator, Opie...

Oh, and let's give thanks to Oprah for the girl's school in Africa... that she stocked with abusers.

And, that faux-book she hawked on her insipid, substance-free afternoon show and then laid waste to the guy 'cause he had duped her.

How does this work?: an overweight, childless, single giving advice on all things family and life?

It doesn't... unless you live in a trailer.

If I had Oprah's money, I wouldn't "lift a foot" if I didn't want to either. She has worked hard for what she got, and the level of her success guarantees that she wasn't a "pussycat" along the way. If it's hard for a white woman to reach a certain level of sucess, can you imagine what she had to go through.

Say what you want, but she is one of if not the richest SELF MADE WOMAN in our country. You don't reach that level of success by being a "pussycat." Why walk, when you can hire someone to carry you.

For twenty-five years your program has helped the culture grow and more importantly mature. Its amazing how we (your audience) have embraced both you and your shows platform. Over the course of time, you have become not only a part of the fabric of our culture; but also you have become a part of our lives much like a close friend.

Through the years you have taken your viewers on a journey of inspiration, education and spiritual enlightenment. You have encouraged us to become better individuals and to be better stewards of all of our resources to help improve lives for all mankind.

You encouraged us to face issues and injustices in our world that were once taboo and now have become commonplace and as a result we have the courage to live our best life lives and to do so more authentically. You have actually saved lives simply because of a kind word you shared or by sharing a personal experience you might have had in your own life. You have taught us the importance of living in a perpetual state of gratitude and how it changes the trajectory of our lives.

On behalf of my music collaborator, thanks for blessing our lives with your truth, integrity and shared life lessons. Our lives have been greatly enriched.

"Who cares?! Oprah is about to retire (in 2011), she got where she is on HER OWN MERIT, and if she doesn’t do stairs, she has the money not to do so!"

Like Obama, she is an example of a black person who became rich and famous because she was presentable to whites, defying the stereotype of the corrupt, violent, immoral, foolish, uneducated, touchy black -- which is pretty much all you see in professional sports, entertainment, the congressional black caucus, and even affirmative action academia. White liberals and conservatives hunger for blacks who aren't laughable stereotypes -- people they can claim to admire. But upon close personal examination black cultural heroes -- like Oprah, Michael Jordan, Colin Powell, Eric Holder, Obama, and even Martin Luther King -- often turn out to be pretty much what you'd dare not guess.

Really? Oprah had to come to DC for an art/antiques dealer to get her some pieces she was interested in?

maybe i do not understand this realm of society and wealth, but it sure seems to me that Chicago or LA or wherever she is could provide these services. Lastly, if Oprah did not purchase from them it would seem to justify the image painted by the gallery.

I have felt, for a long time now, that Oprah has entirely too much influence in this country. Apparently, she's come to believe in the "legend in her own time" fantasy.

The single most telling symbol of her monumental self-absorption is the fact that she publishes a magazine that features her on the cover every single month. Every month!

Oprah does not do humble.

I haven’t read a Kitty Kelley book but I’ve read about them, and clearly they’re filled with titillating quotes and anecdotes. That doesn’t mean they’re false; assuming the people she interviewed were being truthful, they were describing their experiences with Oprah (or whichever subject) through their own filters.

My hope, as a journalist and a reader, is that Kelley would filter out any that she believes to be untruthful. The others, well, that’s a he said/she said situation and life is nothing but those, and it’s up to us to decide what’s true or not.

Personally, I think there’s a ring of truth here. And while many of you, with good reason, have responded “so what?” or “how could anyone be surprised?” I’m still disappointed when I read about this kind of ungracious, entitlement-type behavior - - be it Oprah or anyone else who’s become rich and/or famous by getting people to trust them.

Perhaps Oprah could take a page from the playbook of one of her heroes, Sydney Poitier. On a show where her staff revealed some of their favorite behind-the-scenes moments, they told how this elegant gentleman arrived for an appearance on her show with no fanfare, no entourage, no demands, nothing but good manners.

I'm very surprised to hear this story. I did expect Oprah to be demanding - when you run an empire with many employees, you don't have the time or energy to discuss everything with everyone, you just make decisions - but I certainly didn't expect her to be selfish and rude. I would like to believe this story is not true.

Comedian, you're wrong. The art dealer put his money where his mouth is, by insisting that someone honor their appointment time instead of acting like her time was more important. HIS ego was not the problem. Good for him to stand up for himself, instead of your supposition that as long as they're paying, "big important people" can treat you however they want. Prostitution is what that is called.

Back in the late 60s I "helped edit" an op-ed piece Kelley ghost-wrote for the director of our agency. In fact, I gave the piece an entire rewrite, so I can say I've ghost-written for Kitty Kelley. I'm pretty sure there must be many more hidden hands out there.

I was thoroughly disillusioned with Oprah after she endorsed Arnold for California governor and had Arnold and Maria Shriver on her show-"because they are my friends." I had subscribed to her magazine but cancelled after this.

I had heard years before from a professional stylist that Oprah has had more cosmetic surgery than anyone else. I think she has been clever about it, little things done over time so she doesn't look all "freaked-out facelift."

How is that supposed to help women like themselves, when she can't even do it without altering her face? I am reading the book.

Smart women are disliked in our culture not only by men but by other women. Smart men manipulate dumb women to bring down smart women and smart women see other smart women as competitors. Its easier to be poor, play dumb, smile, and run a whisper campaign in order to topple the smart woman. If Oprah is a Bi$ch so what don't hang out with her. If Oprah's image is earth mother and she is really earth Load so what-just don't buy her product. What this is about really is the incredible desire for everyone to separate image from reality. Is she like us and if so how did she get so rich-
I would be shocked if the richest woman in the world with access to everything at anytime for many years would be unspoiled and unselfish. People who claim to have many friends are great liars. Snart powerful women like it or not create their own environment and deal with it. Kitty's book will be a terrific read- whether anyone wants to admit it is another story.

An art gallery took an appointment with Oprah to view a few 60-80K paintings, but couldn't give her a few minutes of leeway with her appointment?

Sounds like to me that it's the patron of the art gallery, not Oprah who has the diva complex.

Well, as a writer, I love the way she started her Book Club. For very many people, reading is not something that you do. She changed that, named books, discussed them, opened a window to those people. The easiest, most affordable way to learning and adventure is the library and the book store.

I don't know KK at all, but for 5 yrs I worked for a major media company that did business with Oprah and based on our experiences, I'll believe almost everything in this new book. Sorry KK didn't contact any of us, although we were superb at keeping secrets. Unfortunately, like many bigger-than-life celebrities, O's warm and fuzzy public persona doesn't mesh with real life behavior. Oddly, these people never expect the 2 to collide. In O's case, she surrounded herself with yes-people who certainly knew better but kept quiet. A shame.

to all the haterz - oprah winfrey has personally donated an estimated 303 million to charitable organizations. Including 40 million of her own money (not to mention her valuable time) to start a school for girls in south africa. How much have you given?

Ok brutha/sista, read this:

Matthew 6:1-4
"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Note: many of us donate to charities, 50, 100 maybe 200 dollars and we do it without fanfare. Get that?

But Kelley told us she's still a fan. "I love her -- she is a biographer's gift."
If this was a real biography then perhaps Oprah would have allowed Kelley to interview her. Instead this is just a bunch of random interviews pieced together to make a book version of the National Enquirer. If Oprah had not endorsed Obama, then most people on this message board would be writing against Kelley like they did when she wrote about Sinatra. Instead, WaPo bloggers have to stick with the hate Obama and anybody that likes him mantra given to them by their dear leader Limbaugh. I can't wait to hear what the bloggers say when Ms. Kelley writes a book about Palin and trust me she will.

Either way, I don't care if Oprah is a diva. In my book she has earned it.

Wait a minute here....Oprah is like Tiger Woods....a mere human being that people have turned into a "god." When the humanity of the revered god or goddess is revealed, people get let down and disappointed....which is completely stupid and unconscious. Oprah is a human being with a shadow like every other human being. She is no better and no worse except that most of her life, she has been held up as a diva and as "better" and "more valuable" than others. This of course fed Oprah's narcissism and inflated her ego. It is easy to see how she would then be condescending to normal "little" people like you and me. In reality, Oprah is nothing special. She is a creation of the media and of her faithful audience, which projects their own higher self onto her. It's the same phenom with Palin, Brittney Spears, Tiger Woods and all the rest of them. They are merely human. Yet, they can have their fame and money as having fame and money makes it nearly impossible to make spiritual progress in this lifetime. Why? Because a comfort level sets in and the ego doesn't believe that it needs complete transformation. The ego of the famous becomes dependent upon the narcissistic projections of the fans. In plain English, the super star gets all full of her or himself and then begins to behave like they are above being human and above being subject to Universal Law.

This does not surprise me about Oprah. When I lived in Amarillo, TX when she was sued by the cattle ranchers, she came in and demanded a lot. This being a relatively small city it took less than two days to hear about how she threw fits at the Bed & Breakfast she was staying at. She didn't want anyone else staying there and paid the nearest neighbor to go stay somewhere else while she was there. She only used her chef to cook meals and used her own maids.

At the Amarillo Little Theater where she did her show, her people redesigned the stage to suit Oprah, over objections from the owner, even though he was paid for it. She could have used the Civic Center since that would've been easier, but she just had to throw her weight around. Then all she did was whine and complain about being in Amarillo, even when she was on her own TV show. The cattlemen could've just let the whole thing go, but, they just had to bring all this drama.

Look, people like Oprah - and Jackie O, Nancy Reagan, the Bushes, Sinatra, and all the other subjects of KK bios - are iconic public figures. They have a tremendous impact on our society and culture; they affect the outcomes of elections; they govern our country. Who they really are is important information for us. Our knowledge of them is carefully created and then carefully filtered through sometimes fawning and other times hostile media. I have read several KK books and found them insightful and not just gossipy rags. I suggest you naysayers read the book before you decide and keep an open mind and look out for propaganda and media bias. It is everywhere and it is dangerous.

But, let's face it, her karma is at cosmic strength, having made Obama's victory inevitable. Good thing she uses it mainly to help make this a better world. Personality issues aside, there is no denying that she is a powerful force for good. If I had a terrific idea that I believed could help improve this world, Oprah is the one person I could depend on not only to "get it," but to bring it to the world. It is of course ironic that she has unleashed the anti-Christ upon us in the form of Obama, but I accept that she sincerely believed he would be good for the nation.

Oprah's diva-like behavior is well documented, just like Mariah Carrey, Jennifer Lopez, and other divas. They demand the ridiculous and expect it because they are rich and famous.

They are not normal people. They are spoiled, conceited brats who need a good dose of humility.

Oprah is very powerful, so who knows what will happen. My disdain for this woman has nothing to do with her color, her stature or her money. She has believed all her publicity, and fancies herself as above the Average American. It doesn't excuse it either. So if OW bahaved as described, she was wrong just as anyone else would be wrong. Andy Rooney while serving in France (WWII) said never meet the person you look up to. You may be disappointed and that once looked upon hero is tainted forever. That was his experience after meeting his hero, Hemmingway. I find it best to keep my heros the people I really know and just go about doing the right things on a daily basis without fanfare.

You are referring to GW Bush no doubt. At least Oprah, like her or not, crawled her way up to the top of her profession, instead of your hero who slimed the family name for all time and was a total loser if he had a different last name... quite the accomplished hero, wasn't he?

I used to watch Oprah. Then she did the show where she had Nate Berkus redesign her closet. I thought, you know if Oprah wants a closet as big as my house and wants to stuff it with the most expensive things she can find, good for her. But don't parade it in front of an audience that gets by on a small fraction of her wealth. It was just one big bragfest. Yuck.

Then she started doing the give-away shows and I became truly disgusted. The grasping audience practically slobbered with greed while she played the benevolent queen, tossing baubles to her subjects. Ugh.

It appears to me that this woman who came from nothing is now all about stuff and things. She's certainly free to make that choice, but I don't have to watch.

Hey lady! To quote Dave Chappelle, "This is Oprah [freakin] Winfrey!" If she wants to throw a hissy fit and refuse to raise her legs 6 inches to step up, then the dude needed to right then and there, get a construction permit, hire some workers, tear down the wall, reframe, repaint, and rehang the artwork, so that they were at her eye level.

If Oprah can 'ambush' Lisa Ling on live TV in front of millions regarding her texting and driving, then Oprah can certainly be ambushed by Kitty Kelly with an unauthorized biography. Now Oprah wants to give John Edward's MISTRESS, Rielle Hunter, an interview. Does Oprah not care about the emotions and feelings of John's cancer stricken wife, Elisabeth?? It's all about the ratings and $$. Dirty, dirty.

I won't be wasting my money on Kitty Kelly trash. There isn't a journalistic bone in her body and she's better suited to writing for the News of the World about the aliens among us, of which, she may be herself. I've met Oprah a couple of times at charity events. She does not talk about herself in the third person. She does walk and her home in CA has stairs with no elevator so she does stairs too. Kelly just makes stuff up to get attention and sell the book.

Geez, you would think she murdered someone with all of these nasty comments. There are folks who scream and holler at folks everyday. What's the difference if it's me, you, the lady in the dept. store or Oprah? There is no difference. She's worked hard for her money and look at how much she donates to help others. No one asked that you consider her better than the next person-- I don't think she's ever asked you to. I really like Oprah, but I'm not buying the book because all of that gossipy trash is worthless. Kitty Kelly, Kelly Kitty, whatever... disappear!

Sandpebbles, where do you get this stuff. How do you know what Oprah resents? Trust me, her poor childhood clearly hasn't hindered her success so I doubt that she is "hung up on it". As for the false claims that she blames white people, do you really believe that? Blame them for what, her billion dollar fortune, her successful media empire, or her own network. Why would she blame white people when people of all colors support her endeavors.

This is the type of crap that people like you post every time there is an article about a black person. You don't know Oprah personally so just give it a rest already. You're just A. jealous of her success, B. Dislike her because she backed Obama, and C. A petty, little person who thinks that all blacks hate whites because you are a racists yourself. Either, I'm pretty sure Oprah doesn't care one way or the other.

O was astounded at one time when she learned about 'thread count' in bed sheets. Never heard of such a thing she stated. The person know's ziltch about science, medicine, the Arts, Geography, Astronomy, ancient History OR anything else, yet her 'fans' hang on her every word. Unbelievable. Oprah is a creation of the entertainment industry. She's typical of that pitifully dim crowd. It's best not to follow their lead when they speak. If they can act, sing and dance, that is great. But speaking - sharing their insane perceptions of a make believe, amoral material world - is nuts.

I never was able to understand people's attraction to Oprah. Oprah does not have any visible talent. She is a bad actress (no actress), no singer, musician, writer, painter, or poet.
She is not bad looking, but she is not good looking either. She is too heavy and not proportional. She is arrogant, self-centered and bossy. That might be the direct consequences of her strangely fast and non understandably successful career. There was Black show host on abc in 90s, named Rolanda. She, at least, looks as beautiful as , for example, Vanessa Williams is. Her show was canceled, due to unknown reasons, as she is not only really beautiful, in difference with Oprah, but also intelligent to continue this difference. Tyra Banks, Oprah's rival, and also successful show host, at least, strikingly beautiful, as she-herself always looks better than any of her next top model competitions' winners. But what is about Oprah, what is in her, except of her long lasting friendship with Clintons, especially Hillary, and subsequent friendship with Bush and Obamas, I really and truly can't understand.

Kitty Kelly's book is watered down to say the very least. There is nothing explosive or juicy about it. She said herself that people were afraid to talk to her. I read an Oprah tell-all about a month ago, Ruthless. Oprah tried hard to block publication of his book. Oprah's attorney even had Keifer Bonvillain arrested for extortion. The charge was dropped when he gave a tape to the media of Oprah's attorney setting him up to stop publication of the book. The entire book is filled with Oprah's dirty little secrets. It seems her office manager broke his confidentiality agreement when he gave the details to the author. Oprah wasn't happy with that at all. I just read an article last week that said Keifer Bonvillain is thinking about releasing all of the tapes. This is far more interesting than what Kitty Kelly had to say. Bonvillain even posted clips of the tapes on the website I read his book already. Enjoyed it and will probably read it again this weekend. now the author is helping the Federal Government crack down on crooks who commit FEMA fraud. His new book and the recordings to back it up are on the website All of this man's info has been verified and is on tape.

I am tired of all the negative people!!! The arrogance of Kitty Kelly and people like her who think that she is entitled to dig around in someone's personal life just to make a buck is nauseating. She lacks any type of morality, integrity, discretion or just plain humanity.Whether or not Oprah Winfrey is the biggest hypocrite in the free world is really, quite irrelevant and pales in comparison to her actions and behavior. What a sad and sick person she is to violate this woman's privacy, invade her family, write about it for public consumption (and more importantly her financial gain); and then have the indignation to go on any media outlet that will talk to her and claim she is being treated unfairly by Oprah and her colleagues. Is she serious!!! Maybe these people don't want to interview you or speak to you because they find your behavior offensive and morally repulsive and so will not endorse it!! In the interviews I've seen with her, there is nothing that she reveals about Ms. Winfrey that is or should be public knowledge, nor are they deep dark secrets that will corrupt and destroy humanity, it's just private information that only family members would and should know, and so none of your business!!!

From the book, amoung other things:

Vernon reserves his harshest words for Winfrey's best friend, Gayle King, who put the kibosh on a biography he was working on.

Calling her a "dirt hog" and "street heifer," he blames King for a rift in his relationship with Oprah.

"She's become too close to that woman Gayle," he says.

King and others in Oprah's entourage worked hard to keep a tight grip on employees in order to keep her out of the tabloids.

"I thought I would be working for the warm and fuzzy person I saw on television," a former employee at Winfrey's Harpo production company said. "But, God, I was conned. It's a cult at Harpo. So oppressive it's frightening."

Touching is'nt it???

The much-anticipated book details how:

* Winfrey concocted stories about sexual abuse she suffered as a child -- and grossly exaggerated the poverty she was brought up in.

Winfrey sold her body to earn extra money and has even described herself as a teen "prostitute"..

Her relationship with her own mother is so cold that Winfrey won't even let the older woman have her phone number.

Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Miss., in 1954, and, the way she likes to tell it, she was so impoverished that she never had any new dresses or dolls and had to adopt two cockroaches as pets, naming them Melinda and Sandy.

But her family says that's nonsense.

She may not have been well off, but Oprah was relatively "spoiled" as a little girl, her cousin said.

"Where Oprah got that nonsense about growing up in filth and roaches I have no idea," said the relative, Katherine Carr Esters. "I've confronted her and asked, 'Why do you tell such lies?' Oprah told me, 'That's what people want to hear. The truth is boring.' "

The city of Chicago lost its bid, much to Oprah's dismay, because she owned particular property which location would have greatly increased her income had the World's Fair been in Chicago. How much did the U.S. taxpayer pay for this boondoggle?PLENTY.
