Bristol Palin to hit the paid lecture circuit, speaking about teen pregnancy

Bristol Palin (Eric Thayer/Reuters)

Bristol Palin is taking her burgeoning career as a don't-be-a-teen-mom-like-me advocate to the next level by hitting the lecture circuit. Thomas Van Flein, an attorney for the Palin family, told the Associated Press that the 19-year-old has signed with a firm called Single Source Speakers and is expected to earn between $15,000 and $30,000 per speaking gig. (Her mom is commanding roughly $100,000 a speech these days.) That kind of cash should do a lot to supplement her current income, working in an Anchorage doctor's office - but it's hardly the younger Palin's first foray into the business of advocacy. A year ago - just months after giving birth to son Tripp - she began a series of interviews and public appearances on behalf of the Candie's Foundation (prompting her to set up a public relations/lobbying firm in her own name). This summer, she'll make her acting debut playing herself in a teen pregnancy-theme episode of ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager."

Never let a crisis go to waste!

Get in while the getting is good says Sarah Paycheck!

'...months after giving birth to son Tripp... -- better than MOM - she was working 3 days after her last birth !

Who would waste money on this? Right wing redneck Republicans with a fourth grade education who really don't have the money but will scramble it up somehow just to say "I saw Sarah Palin's daughter!!!" Wow!!!

These people never cease to amaze: "don't be a teen mom, like me" because all it winds up doing is making you thousands of dollars on the lecture circuit. Where's the down-side for Bristol in being a "teen mom"? If you come from a politically connected family, it may be the best way to avoid college costs.

Posted by: cms1 | May 18, 2010 11:27 AM | Report abuse

There's something unseemly about making money because you were a teenager who practiced unsafe sex and got pregnant. But then this is the Palin family.

If she was really concerned about other teens not following in her footsteps she'd make the rounds of high schools and speak at school assemblies for free. Her mother can afford it.

Posted by: FauxReal | May 18, 2010 11:27 AM | Report abuse

I am aware of a series of studies that show the fundamental Christian group has a very high incidence of unwed pregnancies. This is especially true of those who signed a abstinence contract. It seems this group accepts this fact and there is no problem with the grandparents taking over. There are many ideas as to why this group has such a condition.
This fact may be why Sarah daughters condition was accepted as a "norm" by these folks.
It will be interesting to see what great revelation this 19 yo will give out. It appears that a strong belief in God, just say no, and all the other popular birth control methods don't work in real life. Perhaps sex education would be a innovative idea?

Posted by: ephetsgma | May 18, 2010 11:34 AM | Report abuse

Look ma I am just like you -- aren;t you proud.
I got pregnant before marriage. I may or may not get a college education. I have no real ambition to work hard and will weasel my way through life without ambition or goals. I think I am all that and a bag of chips. And the monumentally stupid will pay to listen to me a loser born of a loser will make big bucks spewing hypocrisy and hate.

This way Bristol will follow in her mothers footsteps in that she won't have to take care of her own kid either - this is what servants are for.

Posted by: racerdoc | May 18, 2010 12:18 PM | Report abuse

If it had been Chelsea Clinton the right would have claimed to be outraged.

Since it was one of their own, Bristol has been held up by them as a paragon of virtue and a role model. Their hypocrisy has no bounds.

Having a child out of wedlock really seems to be working for Bristol. Didn't have to complete high school, $1500.00 a month in child support, and now, she gets to tell others never to have sex until they get married at 25-30 for 15-30 grand. Brilliant! That baby is turning out to be a cash cow. Once upon a time she claimed that abstinance was unrealistic, so will she be promoting birth control as well? I'm kinda doubting it, cause that really doesn't go over with the tea party GOP fundamentalist crowd. As P.T. Barnum once said.........................

This can't end well. Somebody will wind up on drugs, in jail, on welfare, hating the other, committing suicide. It's just all so wrong.

Her poor kid. How is he going to feel once he grows up and sees that his mom made money talking about how horrible it is to be a teen mom. Sorry, but that is a horrible message to send to your kid. Kind of like the "hate the sin, love the sinner" nonsense those brain dead christionistas always spout. The hatred is never confined to the sin, it always comes across as hate to the sinner when you tell them that who they are is wrong. So this poor kid is going to KNOW that his mom thinks of him as a mistake because people paid her money to tell them not to make the same mistake she made in having a baby while still in high school. I doubt very much he will be able to differentiate his life being a mistake from her mistake of having him as an unwed teen. It will just be known to him that he was a mistake and she spoke regularly about how he was a mistake, and she was paid well for saying such things. Fantastic family values from the Palins.

Bristol still believes in abstinence. Despite the comments of naysayesers, she firmly believes that if she had not had sex she would not have gotten pregnant. That line is worth $15,000-to $30,000 right there.

Hi everyone. I was a teenager being ignored by my Mom while she was out promoting "Christian Family Values". So, I hooked up with this hunky guy who was the captain of the hockey team and, oops, got pregnant! I didn't know I could get pregnant doing it that way because the "Christian Family Values" committee blocked our schools from teaching sex-education. Well, they did teach sex education but all they said was don't fool around and have sex at all because it's bad and you might get diseases.

So I'm here to tell ya, don't listen to the "Christian Family Values" folks, get sex education and use birth control when you have sex because, praying that you don't get pregnant doesn't work.

Thanks for the 30 grand!

An out of wedlock teenager MOTHER, dutiful to conservatism and from conservative families, is commanding a speaking fee of $15,000 per appearance, to speak to TEENAGERS and ADULTS of conservative leaning about morality, ethics, out of wedlock motherhood?

That's an eye-popping, jaw-dropping invention from the morally uplifting, uptight Conservative folks, no?

All the thousands of posts you've cranked out all these years here in the Post, this IS THE ONLY ONE meaningful, the only one I agree with.

I AM very jealous, as a Liberal who's in his early 40s, who's never married, with a college degree... no kids... no wife...

How does this Conservative teenage out of wedlock mother do it?

Tell us the secret, so we clueless Librals, too, could do this kind of thing and get paid $30,000 per appearance for it!

I am so jealous and, well, angry and then turn more jealous... I am turning pink and blue over this unfair world... God must really be in Bristol's corner, on her side, against us Godless Librals! LOL

The right would condemn Chelsea Clinton for doing the same thing, because they actually (subconsciously) do expect more from Democrats than from Republicans.

I wish Bristol Palin no harm, but of course people will come only to see her, nothing else. She can't have much to say on the subject, since obviously she doesn't know what would work to prevent teenage pregnancies - the only thing she could do, would be to advocate available sex education and contraception for teenagers. I hope she will.

But her whole appearance - a young mother seemingly being OK - probably draws more admiration from her peers than instigates a thinking of "I wouldn't like to be like her".

The Palin's are a great example of how even if you are unqualified, ignorant and undeserving you can get rich in America. And the fact that the Palin's can command these fees is testament to what P.T. Barnum about a sucker being born every minute.

Don't get me wrong, I admire Sarah Palin for recognizing the windfall of her celebrity political status (so she is not dumb when it comes to the art of the con which is a great political tool). After all the only people being fleeced are deserving of having their money grifted.

He's made an incredible amount of money off something based on a good deal of junk science. I believe he just bought a $9 million house, what kind of carbon footprint do you libs think that has? Come on, hold yourselves to a higher standard(we know thats not really possible). Anyone with half a brain understands the disdain you have for the Palin family. A person of character might speak on the subject and even do so for a fee, but to take "celebrity" level fees for this seems to me to simply be a statement of peculiar self-absorption and a lack of any thought beyond instant gratification.

Bristol will tell these losers that the best way to avoid pregnancy is to have Sarah deliver an Abstinence Only lecture. It worked like a charm for Bristol.

Posted by: FilmMD | May 18, 2010 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Wouldn't Cathy Lanier be a better choice for the paid lecture circuit, particularly on this subject? (Presuming she were available.)

After all, what has Bristol accomplished through her own hard work and merits since having her child? Not that very much time has passed, I will grant you that. All the more reason not to pay her for her limited experience thus far.

(CNN) -- The new Washington police chief, Cathy Lanier, is no stranger to challenges.

She dropped out of high school after the ninth grade, and gave birth to her son when she was just 15.

"Instead of viewing the situation as negative, you just kind of have to move on," she told CNN in a recent interview. "I had a child to raise and that was the most important thing to me. And I knew that I wanted him to go to good schools, and I knew I wanted him to have the option to go to college. ...So I just ... pushed on."

She later earned a high school equivalency degree, and became a police officer in 1990. She also went on to receive bachelor's and master's degrees in management from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and another master's degree in national security from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

"It was a lot of long hours, but I just enjoy learning, and it has helped me tremendously in my profession," she said of her education.

The point is, Zim, that there are a lot of unwed teen mothers our there in a far more precarious financial situation than Bristol Palin, receiving $1500/month in support, and no one is signing them up to speak for thousands of dollars a pop. There are two reasons she can cash in on a sin: she is very attractive, and her last name is Palin. period. Were she anyone else, were she in the least bit unattractive, there would be no speaking engagements, and she would work for her child as others do. For some reason, the Palins have this entitlement mentality, and no matter what they do or who they hurt, they keep raking in the cash. I am not jealous, just perplexed. If I had Palin's millions, I would be contributing to causes I cared about (not politicians of any stripe) and donating my time to charities. This is what we don't like about the Palins: they come off as wonderful parents when they are never home to parent, and Sarah lies about policy to make headlines so Republican will give her even more money she can sock away offshore. What you fail to see is that in 2006 alone, there were over 435,000 teenagers who gave birth. So what is her extraordinary accomplishment that justifies 15-30K for opening her mouth and saying, "Do as I say, not as I do"?

In the 18 months or so since she's given birth, what has she accomplished? Cathy Lanier is a better role model, if only because she's older and has had the time to make and achieve goals for herself, if that's your standard. If all you're looking for is an unwed teenage mother, there are plenty to choose from. Many of them would probably speak about the consequences of their actions for FREE.

Dodger.

Some do it as part of their parole conditions, some do it as a penance, some probably do it because they like the attention.

But some DO get paid.

So I repeat: How is this hypocritical?

Name recognition. The fact that you know who she is and what her story was before you picked up the newspaper today is worth $15-30,000.

Her “extraordinary accomplishment” is to be notorious. If she had just been any of the other “435,000 teenagers who gave birth” in 2008, then she would not have become the central figure in a national Democratic Party propaganda campaign.

But that’s just what happens. Because of the efforts of her mother’s political opponents, most Americans know who she is. In the modern era, that’s worth money.

Cathy Lanier is a better role model, if only because she's older and has had the time to make and achieve goals for herself, if that's your standard.

I agree - she should be doing it for free if she is really sincere. Nothing but greedy people. Everyone should just boycott her speaking fiasco and ignore her. She can't get paid if no one signs her up. I am so sick of her.

"What about people who go around giving speeches like "don't drive drunk and end up a paraplegic like me?"

Or what about "don't smoke 3 pakcs or cigarettes per day and end up without a larynx like me?"

MADD speakers are volunteers. Both those that speak at schools and those who speak at victim impact panels.

Addressing your second example, your local branch office of the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association or American Heart Association will give you the names and numbers of people within the community who will come and talk for free.

Some people do it as a condition of their parole, but that still doesn't involve money. But clearly someone thinks it is a community service, or they wouldn't offer it or insist upon it.

What does Bristol Palin have to say for 15-30K, that someone far more successful can say? Or if the cost is the glitch, there are many teenage mothers who can give the same message for FREE. Within the community, even.

As you clearly overlooked this post, I'm going to repeat myself for your benefit.

"

Posted by: Skowronek | May 18, 2010 2:40 PM

She's not available--that wasn't my point. My point was that she WAS a teenage mother who then went on to make more of herself. If a paid speaker is a requirement, why not pay someone who's actually worked hard and reached a goal? Bristol is too young to have done much in the past 18 months, so I fail to understand why she is being paid such an exorbitant rate.

Now we can see that he was speaking truth and that Sarah even has her daughter milking the spotlight too.

Best part, Bristol's friends have said that she was trying to get pregnant and the girl was known for her underage drinking (as posted on MySpace). The other local word is that Bristol is doing it with her new boyfriend.

Just imagine, an African-American teenager unwed teenager whose boyfriend, say, had characterized himself as a "f***ing gangster" rather than a "f***ing redneck," as Levi Johnson had done. Anybody who thinks that there isn't a reprehensible double standard at work here, and that that unfairness doesn't begin with the Republican "family values-abstinence only-no equal rights for homosexuals" crowd, is nuts.

Don't let anyone ever tell you that the double standard is not alive and well in America. Don't let anyone tell you that we live in a "colorblind" meritocracy (or heck, are even headed towards one.)

Where is the company setting up a public relations, 503(c) non-profit for the black- or brown-skinned girl busting her behind to get her and baby off to school, working a job at Mickey D's, taking her SATs and ACTs, filling out application after application for college aid?

If Bristol Palin's mom wasn't a D-List political celebrity, if she was the daughter of one Levi Johnston's relatives -- or Todd Palin's sibling's child -- Bristol would be toiling away in Wasilla, bussing tables or tending bar in an Anchorage "gentleman's" club to make ends meet. She might have gotten hitched, if not to Levi, then to some other oilfield worker or deckhand. They'd spend their days hoping to get a bit part on the "Deadliest Catch."

Bristol Palin should be in college. Although, it would be a difficult situation for her because she is well known now, she would not be the only one to be working toward her degree while getting help from her family and taking care of a child. The Palins do a great disservice to their children if they don't encourage them in every possible way to get an education, especially now that they can afford the financial cost to send them to college without any real sacrifice.

I don't suppose it would occur to Bristol that the best way to overcome the stigma attached to being an unmarried, teenage mom would be to get an education. Not surprising, since the same thing hasn't occurred to her mother, whose response to charges of a lack of knowledge about the world has been to keep on spewing inanities, not bone up on the issues.

I don't see how this is any different from other people who give "don't make the same mistakes I made" speeches. If she was left alone during the campaign, I suspect we wouldn't be hearing boo out of her.

She has a child to support and you know she isn't getting any help from the baby's dad. Again, I see nothing wrong with her sharing her story with others and making some money at the same time.

Most on the left espouse a live and let live life style. You're not paying to see her, so why do you care? Isn't this flying in the face of your philosophy? What about tolerance and respect the left often speaks of? Is this only to be given to people who agree with you or is it given unconditionally? I'm really stunned by the cruel nature of the comments here and that includes all political stripes. Thanks.

Some people here should be ashamed of your hateful comments.Bristol is speaking out and isnt she doing it in America?Last time I looked there is no hammer and cycle on the flag(yet).Palin and her daughter have every right to be paid speakers.Same as Al Gore,Bill Clinton and dozens of democrat politicians and celebrities.Clinton charges 250,000 per speech and your not whining like babies about his or Gores fees.Your hypocracy sure shows when a person is making cash that is not a flamming liberal.I commend her for helping other teens who do not have a famous families support & cash, avoid getting pregnant.I commend her for helping the candies foundation cause, and earning her own living. If she can help change the minds of just a few teens and make them think about proper contraception.Or waiting untill after getting an education to start a family.THEN GOOD FOR HER!

I never cease to be amazed at the moronic, childish lunacy of the pathetic, jobless, Mommy-dependent morons who post on these sites.

How sad it is for you and your do-nothing worthless lives that you have to bash someone who takes advantage of life's opportunities.

Come out of Mommy's basements, drop the weed, zip up your pants...and get a life morons.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! Mom Sarah Palin had one in the oven as well when she married Todd! At least Todd DID marry her though instead of going on to become a porn star like Levi, even though he had the looks.

Those Wasilla Hillbillies all are mentally challenged! Sarah Palin's fans, who adore her, all remind me of those Hillbillies who kept on loving Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, even after Jim Bakker was exposed for having an affair with a young girl. He then he ended up in prison for stealing MILLIONS of dollars from those Hilllbillies who sent in their little donations to him and Tammy Faye when they had their tv Ministry!

They just kept on enriching themselves off the backs of the poor, just like Sarah, and now her daughter Bristol as well!

This is what passes as news to the WAPO?? Whats the prob??? You guys jealouse? Or is it the fact that the Palins are a bigger draw then the used-to-be vaunted Washington Post?
This "report" is nothing more then Palin-bashing practise in case another REAL Republican runs for a Nation-wide election.

If it had been Chelsea the left would have demanded that there be no criticism of her. Because u know, it's *Hillarys* little girl.

What pathetic swine you are, to attack a teenager just because you like to spew about her mother.

But then, when it comes to class, you leftists just don't have it. Look at your phoney heroes, hypocritical swine and liars like Letterman, Maher and Olbermann.

Note the use of the word "If". That didn't escape you, right? The fact is that Chelsea Clinton didn't get pregnant as a teenager. She went to college, she's earned her masters', she's engaged to be married and *gasp*, hasn't proven her fecundity.

Hypocrites abound on both sides of the political spectrum, let's go check out Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Sanford, etc.

Yep, lots of people are paid to speak. Most of them have accomplished something more than Bristol has to date. College, for example. Or a successful business. Sometimes, the people who are paid to speak also donate money to charities that they find worthwhile. Perhaps that is Bristol's plan, but no one knows as she hasn't said anything about it.

But for who her mom is, Bristol Palin would be just another unwed mom trying to figure out how to deal with the next 18 years. Some get a lucky break, most obviously don't. I just can't imagine what she can add to the conversation. Her "experience?"

wow, would it have made you libs happier if she would have had an abortion? typical lib comments, if this was obama's daughter she would be held up as a role model to America. just another chance for the lib media to bash the Palin family. the clock is ticking and November can't get here soon enough...

Why is it that anything the Palin family does is considering "money grubbing" by the leftist elite? Sarah Palin has a lot to say, particularly about politics and the deterioration of our society as we know it under Obama's socialist iron fist. Since people want to pay Palin big money to state her views, so be it. The same goes for her daughter, Bristol. It all smells of sour grapes to me. Just look at Bill Clinton and all the money he is continually raking in, and nobody says a word about it since he is a Democrat.

Leave it to a Palin to find new and inventive ways to cash in on their name and notoriety! Why am I not surprised that Britol Palin would go her mother's route to fame and fortune!?

There are only four ex-presidents still alive, and limited number of former speakers of the house, CEO's of multi-billion dollar business, etc. That is why they can and do command high speaking fees. There are hundreds of thousands of teenage parents who started the process in high school and declined to get married.

I cannot believe that these nutty conservatives will PAY to hear a speech about abstinence by a child who got pregnant as a teenager and is now an unmarried mother. Most of the audience probably has someone like that right in their own family. Why not give HER their money? She needs it more than Little Bristol does.

Have you noticed? The comments from Bristol's defenders on this thread seem unusually dumb, even for conservatives. This is what happens when you attempt to defend the indefensible.

I think this latest endeavor is likely some coy way for Sarah Palin and SarahPAC to recieve large undisclosed corporate donations through the backdoor.

First of all, Bristol Palin has not graduated from college, has barely a high school education and her only claim of warrant is that she got knocked up out of wedlock and it happened to be revealed when her mother was by dumb luck selected to be McCain's running mate.

The Palinbots constantly throw Clinton and Gore's fees in our faces. Let's do the logic: Bill Clinton: Two term President; average to above average overall performance; decent economy. Prior to that, he was a multi-term governor; a lawyer and law professor, attorney general, Yale law graduate and a Rhodes Scholar.

Al Gore: Two term vice president; previously a senator and representative from Tennessee; regarded as driving force in Clinton administration's domestic initiatives on Capitol Hill.

Those men, regardless of one's ideology, have decades of experience and insight to share.

Bristol Palin is an uneducated flip flop; first telling Greta Van Susteren in Feb 2009 that abstinence only is unrealistic yet now is going out to try and get $30k to preach the opposite message that, btw, failed her.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,495244,00.html

Who will actually pay money to see and hear such an uninformed teenager with no real experience or insight to offer? Dollars to donuts, she will only give closed speeches that most likely will be coordinatd with Mommy Dearest's screeching screeds or to large donors funneling $$ into the PAC.
