Capricia Marshall's White House state dinner slip -- and quick recovery

Updated Thursday 7 p.m.

"As a proud Mexican-American, this historic day at the White House moved me in ways I never anticipated."

-- Capricia Marshall joking to us about that hard slip-and-fall -- but quick-and-elegant recovery -- on the White House North Portico steps (100K YouTube views!).

Original item posted Thursday 10 a.m.

Here's how you can tell that Chief of Protocol Capricia Marshall has been working White House state dinners for quite some time now -- her exquisite posture, her savvy gown choice (neither clashing with nor copying the first lady's colors)... and her demand, after she slipped and fell, that journalists "Don't use that!!!" Hey, that might have been possible back when she was a Clinton-era social secretary -- but you can't hide anything in the YouTube era. (This has already been everywhere.) Capricia, remember -- it's the cover-up not the crime. But give her credit for a graceful recovery: Unclear whether the fall was caused by the slippery marble steps or her dress, but she stood back up quickly, seemingly uninjured -- and stepped more carefully the rest of the way down.

I cannot understand why so much negative focus is put on every little thing the Obama Administration does. Why can't people just for once be gracious enough to just give them a chance. It is truly disgusting and ignorant.

Posted by: Scar1 | May 20, 2010 12:53 PM | Report abuse

If you're going to fall, that was a very graceful way to do it!

Posted by: talleyl | May 20, 2010 12:53 PM | Report abuse

Again why is so much negative focus place on this administration? Why can't for once people just give the Obama Administration a chance? It is so ugly. It really turns a person to just disgust.
Every thing done there is something said that is completely ignorant. The focus should be on what was gained in the relationship of the Mexican President and President Obama-not someone falling. However, the media can be very ugly even to this young lady. I am sure she was hurt by the incident.

Posted by: Scar1 | May 20, 2010 12:58 PM | Report abuse

Gracious, classy, good sense of humor -- just like the Obamas. What a lady.

Posted by: Californian11 | May 20, 2010 12:59 PM | Report abuse

Modern women, and rightly so, have little practice in high heels and long gowns, so put on the antique costumes and fall away.

Posted by: edbyronadams | May 20, 2010 12:59 PM | Report abuse

Michelle, you looked awesome. I think they all did regardless of stupid comments. The work is most important so,to the the young lady we wish you well and may God bless you for trying dear. We all have had our moments.

Posted by: Scar1 | May 20, 2010 1:01 PM | Report abuse

I don't understand why falls are covered by journalists at all. This goes for Bob Dole's fall off a platform and this tumble.

Posted by: sarahabc | May 20, 2010 1:11 PM | Report abuse

That's a great hairdo, Michelle!

Posted by: HookedOnThePost | May 20, 2010 1:15 PM | Report abuse

It can't be the first time this has happened. It's not like she was running or anything. Maybe she needs her own little green carpet.

That sailor showed excellent control by remaining at attention, if it were me I would have been rolling on the ground laughing.

Mrs. O looks fabulous.

Posted by: KraftPaper | May 20, 2010 1:29 PM | Report abuse

This is newsworthy?

Shame on WAPO!

With all the problems this world and especially this country is facing this type of lame journalism has no place in the legitimate media.

Posted by: hfaulk01 | May 20, 2010 1:30 PM | Report abuse

I think it's disgraceful that the Post reports on something like this- especially showing a pic of it on the front page of their online version- for the record I am opposed to 90% of what Obama does but to publically embarrass this woman like this is in NO WAY NEWSWORTHY- shame on you Washington Post editors!

Posted by: woolfeeeee | May 20, 2010 1:31 PM | Report abuse

SNL will get some mileage of it for sure!

Posted by: Kcrl1 | May 20, 2010 1:33 PM | Report abuse

All those men standing by and not a one helps the lady. Tsk Tsk. Are those soldiers in the background real or a photo of soldiers?

Posted by: HookedOnThePost | May 20, 2010 1:41 PM | Report abuse

I'm guessing that stone is pretty slick, her own little carpet is not a dumb idea.

Posted by: jhtlag1 | May 20, 2010 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Kind of funny. The one in charge of making sure things like this don't happen is the one that falls. Nice recovery though. LOL

Posted by: askgees | May 20, 2010 1:46 PM | Report abuse

She's cute, fall or not.

Posted by: trenda | May 20, 2010 1:49 PM | Report abuse

POTUS made a step to help her out but she was already up, nice recovery.

Posted by: Bubuz | May 20, 2010 2:05 PM | Report abuse

I'm confused, is this the Washington Post or the Huffington Post? Let's all watch "The Post" keep itself relevant to the point of obscurity! Future Post-worthy stories... an investigative report on BP CEO "What's Hayward Wearing Now?" ...mid-term election coverage "Race Heats Up: Shirtless Rand Paul" ...and unearthing corruption "Brad Seen with Lindsay Lohan: What Does Jen Think?"

Posted by: TheManInBlack | May 20, 2010 2:07 PM | Report abuse

Fortunataly Capricia didn't get hurt but why is she wearing those stupid high heels? Wearing high heels is not healthy for your feet and is dangerous when walking on a hard very smooth surface like marble or granite.

Instead of falling I wish Capricia would have let a very loud and stinky fart! Better yet, how about if she were rip a big smelly one during the state dinner!!!

Now that would have been totally funny!

Posted by: montana123 | May 20, 2010 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Didn't President Obama say to his biatch press corps on the scene there "Don't take that picture!! - biatches" and didn't Michelle say "Don't print that picture!! - biatches" - so why is this here - biatches?

People, relax. This is a GOSSIP blog. If you don't want to read about things like this, don't read the gossip page. If you think this is such a waste of time, what does it say that you took the time to post a comment?
Sheesh!
Amy and Rox, you guys are awesome, keep it up!

Posted by: historybride | May 20, 2010 2:17 PM | Report abuse

Obviously, the emphasis on the negative in the Obama administration is because Obama is such a direct contrast to everything George Bush WASN'T!!

Obama is, above all, INTELLIGENT, SUPERBLY educated, ACCOMPLISHING his goals successfully, ABLE TO SPEAK without tripping on the content, DOESN'T NEED a babysitter, GOT HERE without Daddy's money or influence, HAS a happy marriage, with no Condoleeza who thinks he's: "MY HUSBAND", GOT elected with no voting machine or voting rights "troubles", AND, of ALL THINGS,
HE's "BLACK"!!
So how DARE he be so SUCCESSFUL and PROPER!!

He definitely NEEDS to be kept DOWN by "US", "PROPER CHRISTIANS", where he belongs!

Now, THAT wasn't so hard to figure out, was it?? This world still contains VERY small minds, and the majority of them are in our OWN country!!

Don't get your knickers in a knot. This article is in the Style section of the paper and this column has been around for ages. It's always been the little gossip column.

I'm a Republican and I would say it was a very quick recovery and in no way negative. You liberals can't take anything seriously anymore. Get a thicker skin, no wonder conservatives are winning the argument. Whooooo cares that the White House Social Secretary fell except liberals that think it is "negative" press for his Lord God Obama. Geeeeesh!

Posted by: jadrummond | May 20, 2010 2:28 PM | Report abuse

After reading the comments, I can only write that Obama's supporters are as crazy as his detractors. It's funny how a light article is becoming ground zero for Obama's fan to argue that the media is attacking him and that he is the best. After reading those articles you would think Obama is God on earth.

Posted by: trumeau | May 20, 2010 2:35 PM | Report abuse

It's rather sad that the person in charge of ensuring things like this don't happen is the one that falls. LOL NEXT!!!!

Posted by: askgees | May 20, 2010 2:37 PM | Report abuse

I might also add: "Obama's ENDING the wars and murders of so many innocents, considering facts and advice from the military, instead of STARTING wars and outrageously expensive trillions of dollars of vengeful murders by LYING to Congress because "Osama BinLaden tried to KILL MY Daddy!"

I guess you might live in another world. Obama and Congress has not stopped the war in Irak and Afghanistan. And American soldiers are still dying for no reasons over there.

WHICH of the "crazies?" would you think YOU fit into then, since yours is also a criticism/opinion??

As someone has already pointed out, this IS the "Society" and "Gossip" section of WaPo! Obama obviously SHINES, especially after such a FAILURE! The rest of the world has noticed; obviously there is a "reason" SOME in our own country won't admit the FACTS!

This is NOT news. What a shame!

Posted by: jewishmother | May 20, 2010 2:51 PM | Report abuse

"trumeau", please take a course in "Reading Comprehension". My comment is in the present tense, as Obama IS ending the tragic wars that Bush started for personal reasons in an area he had been told, so knew FULL WELL, was loaded with tribes , different religious sects, inter-tribal warring, etc., and he KNEW it would not be a war that could be stopped on a dime because of that, BUT, he was SO full of revenge that he didn't CARE, and started it anyway by LYING to Congress.

IF you follow any news channels, besides the crying entertainers, you will know that ending the war in exactly on its time schedule as Obama stated.

I totally agree with some of the other posters. It's almost become a witch hunt with every tiny thing that happens that the Obamas are involved with turning into a barrage of negative comments. It's getting really old. I'm really starting to side with them now...just the opposite effect the media is trying to accomplish. I'm sure a lot of other people are feeling the same way. I admire the heck out of them for keeping their heads up during all the slamming too. Got to be some strong folks to do that. Not to say they probably have had some "give up" moments in their private quarters. I really feel kind of sorry for them for having to take all this negativity. Given what he had to work with after coming into office I think he's done, overall, a pretty remarkable job. As good as anyone could possibly do.

60% of Americans support the AZ law yet the entire and only Socialist Party of Deceit stood and gave Calderon a standing O. It is clear, come Nov. & in '12, which party needs to be in the unemployment line.

Pres. Obama should have been a gentleman and helped her (the social secretary) up. No class. I hope she didn't hurt herself.

Michelle Obama needs a fashion stylist. Her flubber is spilling over the top of her dress. Not attractive. Cover it up Michelle. Barack's tie is crooked. They just look messy.

Beyonce is the most overrated celeb in the business. She has no talent. Her "husband" (isn't he gay?) is so trashy, his inaugural outfit with fur hat and coat looked like pimp-wear. Yikes. Why did Obama let them into the "situation room" recently? The Wash Post should investigate that.

Pres. Obama should never be a critic of the United States. He should be our fiercest defender. His constant apologies do not endear him to anyone around the world, they just smell weakness and that's never good.

Mexico's Pres. has the audacity to bash Arizona's new immigration laws when Mexico has some of the harshest immigration and visitor laws in the world? He should shut up and go back to his crime ridden hell hole and deal with his own massive drug cartel problems which are spilling over our borders.

Secure our borders NOW Mr. Obama and Mr. Calderone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arizona is just attempting to deal with what Obama, Bush and feds have failed to deal with, illegal immigration that's out of control!

Illegal immigration must be stopped. Legal immigration must be curtailed. Political refugee status must be stopped.

The great United States of America simply does not have unlimited resources. We don't have enough water, food, jobs, land, health care resources, educational resources, etc. to serve our current citizenry, let alone absorb all others who wish to come here.

The only change to the U.S. Constitution should be to eliminate the natural born citizen component. Children of illegals and political refugees should not be automatic citizens. Send them all back to their home countries.

It's about quality of life. Do you want to wake up and be like France someday with one out of five citizens being a Muslim?

Now they are trying to ban the burka and it's too late.

Did you know the amount Bush spent on his Airforce 1 flights to his freqent vacations at his Crawford ranch?? Also, that he took so many vacations the time amounted to 1/4 of the time he was in office, which is the equivalent of an ENTIRE year?? And, exactly WHAT was the cost of Bush's State dinners, which ALL presidents have, I'm sure you know.

Please check the waste in the administrations that YOU voted for before you criticize with a comparison. We ALL know that Bush was a spendthrift and that he never saw a spending bill Mr. Moneybags didn't like. Of course, NO President will likely equal the amounts Bush spent on his personal wars, which are ongoing TRILLIONS, NOT to keep people WELL, but to MURDER them!!

Also, compare your current taxes with previous republican years because almost all except multi-millionaires. which criteria you obviously don't meet, had LESS taxes under Obama.

However, I never met a Republican yet who knew how to THINK or figure out anything that difficult!

Barry the incompetent boob Obama, the chickenhawk who never served a day in uniform, has already sent more American soldiers to their deaths in Afghanistan (439) than were killed during the fist six years of the war, 2001-2002006 (358).

Very cute, "DonewithDan"!! That is exactly about the sense of it! Like I said: "Small minds!"

The lady who hopes Marshall gets "fired" for tripping will be the laugh of her neighborhood the day SHE trips. (And, we ALL do trip, sonner or later!) She'll probably trip over her own wagging tongue!

I LOVE Michelle's new haircut, but I can't figure out why all the one-shouldered dresses? I guess some designer must be trying to make that the style. Strapless or a halter neck would look better on her shoulders for MY taste, but then, nobody asked me!

Obviously the person using the name "fraudobama" doesn't know WHICH party is reponsible for bringing and giving amnesty to so many millions of illegals to run their corporations more cheaply!! I'd say it's time for "thefraud's" ignorance to "Google" the FACTS of the guilt and responsibility!

Remember President Reagan?? He wasn't a Democrat, was he?? Just Google "Reagan and the illegal immigrants"!!

Posted by: Maerzie | May 20, 2010 4:13 PM | Report abuse

Obviously, "screwjob15" has that name for a reason, since he just screwed "ANOTHER" job. He posted:

"Barry the incompetent boob Obama, the chickenhawk who never served a day in uniform, has already sent more American soldiers to their deaths in Afghanistan (439) than were killed during the fist six years of the war, 2001-2002006 (358)"

ACTUALLY, the REJECT doesn't even have a CLUE how many REAL lives were lost while he sat home on his dead A$$, criticizing Obama and others, without even MENTIONING how many DAYS anyone in the entire Bush administration served in ANY active duty.
The REAL figures (unlike the figment of imagination figures the "screwjob" pulled out of his stash are below.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Fortunately WaPo has JUST updated the actual recorded fatalities:

Total Fatalities

Operation Iraqi Freedom: 4,384 (Iraq)

Operation Enduring Freedom: 1,069 (Afghanistan)
(Updated May 20, 2010)

############################

So, obviously the "screwjob" is TOTALLY FULL of it! Someone should teach him how to use the search engines so he doesn't continue to make a fool out of himself!!

How nice it would be if Bush's carelessness hadn't caused even "screwjob's" minimal FANTASY numbers of deaths. Even these REAL numbers don't BEGIN to count the numbers of completely INNOCENT women, babies, children, etc. and the amount of devastated properties, OR the emotional trauma to ALL concerned!!

Posted by: Maerzie | May 20, 2010 5:05 PM | Report abuse

"jadrummond", if you READ the posts, you will SEE that it certainly isn't "liberals" (depending on who all you PUT into that generic basket), who are commenting. Most of the catty, nasty responses are OBVIOUSLY from Republicans! Unless you were referring to the enormous number of "LIBERAL" REPUBLICANS there are these days. Since the republicans no longer have any "organized" party or leader, besides Rush Limbaugh,, it seems to have become, besides the "party(?) of NO", the "party(?) of the CONFUSED"!!

Posted by: Maerzie | May 20, 2010 5:18 PM | Report abuse

News sources grab up ANY piece of interest because there are so many different types of people they simply have to "GUESS" what will turn anybody's crank!

News is a business. News is what's FACTUAL, whether it's minor or MAJOR!!

Lies, exaggerations, sarcasm, satire, however, are NOT news; they are COMEDY, involving the need for a "little" grey matter to interpret, so belong with the skits on SNL, Jon Stewart,Colbert, and the entertainment channel.

SOME people don't know the difference, and understand these sources as their ONLY "news" of the day, which is ignorance that needs to be corrected.
