Julian Lennon sings for "Lucy" at the Lupus Foundation gala

Julian Lennon sings for his old schoolmate at the Lupus Foundation gala. (Kaye Evans-Lutterodt for the Lupus Foundation)

Blast from the past: Julian Lennon, eldest son of John, made a rare D.C. appearance Wednesday to perform "Lucy" at the Lupus Foundation's Butterfly Gala at the Mellon Auditorium. Julian Lennon, 47, wrote the original song to honor Lucy Vodden, a childhood friend who recently died after a long battle with the disease -- the same little girl who inspired his father to write "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." (And you thought it was about LSD!) Lennon and the foundation announced a research grant named after Vodden.
