Al and Tipper Gore separating after 40 years of marriage

After forty years of marriage, Al and Tipper Gore are separating, the couple announced in an e-mail to friends Tuesday morning.

"This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration," the former vice president and his wife said in the e-mail, first reported by Politico. "We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further." Gore's spokeswoman later confirmed the validity of the e-mail.

The news stunned many political watchers -- the duo's mutually affectionate manner on the campaign trail did much to enliven Al Gore's stuffy image -- but also good friends.

"I'm shocked -- beyond shocked," said Chris Downey, a close friend for many years who said she spoke to Tipper last week. "This is the least likely course of events I could imagine."

Since Al Gore's bitter loss of the 2000 presidential race, the couple has made their home in his home state of Tennessee. Al, now 62, has spent the past few years travelling extensively as an environmental advocate. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in 2007, and a documentary about his warnings on global warming won an Academy Award the same year. Tipper, 61, became famous in the 1980s for her protests of vulgar and sexually-explicit language in pop music. In later years, though, she turned her advocacy focus to mental health issues. A lifelong photographer who often showed up at official events with a camera in her hand, she more recently began selling her work, with proceeds going to her husband's Climate Project.

The Los Angeles Times reported last month that the couple bought an $8.8 million home in Montecito, Calif., this spring.

They met in high school -- she attended the Alexandria school that is now St. Stephen's and St. Agnes, while he went to St. Alban's -- and wed in May 1970 at Washington National Cathedral. They have four grown children -- Karenna, Kristin, Sarah and Albert -- and three grandchildren.

In other words...

Now that he's rich and famous, time to move on.

Can't wait to to see the blond 30 year old environmental "activist" he dumped her for.

Talk about recycling.

Who could blame her?!

First to say that this news is heartbreaking. I hope they'll be able to reconcile their differences before the divorce is finalized. Forty years is a long time to not have the patience to do so. May God intervene on their behalf before it's to late.

A 40-year marriage doesn't simply end. You don't go through all the trials and tribulations of a marriage (particulalry in the public eye) to part ways and grow old alone. There's another woman. Men don't leave unless they have someone else lined up.

Posted by: pepperjade | June 1, 2010 1:26 PM | Report abuse

This is difficult to fathom. After 40 years!?

Remember when Al and Tipper were sanctimonious crusaders against music with offensive lyrics? Those two always knew how to hitch their hypocritical wagon to a fake cause they don't believe in, didn't they?

We'll sure miss them.

It just goes to show that everything politicians put out there is carefully crafted image-mongering, no more honest or dependable than a BP carbon-footprint commercial.

You can't trust any of this stuff to be the real deal, no matter how sincere it may seem.

Posted by: SISSD1 | June 1, 2010 1:42 PM | Report abuse

I see some mean spirited comments here. They come from the political side of the spectrum.

Perhaps, as some here have concluded, Al erred by straying outside his marriage.

If true, the difference between Gore and people like the disgraced Gov. Mark Sanford, Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich and Senator David Vitter, and so many other right wing politicians, is this:

Al Gore hasn't made a sanctimonious career based on "Family Values," values which he, like those above, then cavalierly abandoned.

Posted by: davewyman | June 1, 2010 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Folks.

For those of us that have been married for a while, even 25 years, this is sad news to hear about anyone. 40 years is a long time and a big investment.

I hope the media, and people in general, will respect their privacy and afford them some dignity.

Posted by: JJH1 | June 1, 2010 1:45 PM | Report abuse

Most of the comments contained here, while not entirely mean spirited, are judgmental and potentially hurtful toward the Gore's and their family. What's the point of jumping in with some pop off conclusion about their marriage and their current lives? All I can say is that they made a 40 year commitment to each other and to their family and that is a lot more than many people manage. A divorce must be very difficult for them at this stage of life. With more than half of all American marriages ending in the courts, ten years seems more than most people are capable of sustaining.

The marriage definitely played a role in recent American history. Tipper Gore was reported to be insistent in 2000 that Bill Clinton not be out front campaigning for her husband and that might have played a a role in putting Bush before the Supreme Court, which put him in the White House. Without that, we would not likely have had the Iraq war, in which we are still engaged.

While I am not a personal friend nor a particularly deep admirer of Mr. Gore, let this be said: this is a love story (no reference intended) and today's announcement marked the end of an enduring, successful love story between two people. Until or unless we learn otherwise, that's it.

Al Gore is has spent his entire adult life perpetrating a global warming fraud on the US people. Then, he hypocritically runs around the world on private jets building ever bigger houses! It would be an irony to think that Gore is just a hypocrite and a huckster in his public life, but that he is an honest broker in private. It says a great deal about Tippers character that she is splitting with him!

I am constantly amazed at the degree of idiocy displayed by the comments in the Post. Most are full of insulting vitriol, not to mention bad grammer, poor style and spelling errors. Check out reader comments in the foreign press, e.g., Le Monde, for a more intelligent and thoughtful 'demarche'. Just another example of how much American education has deteriorated.

While I am not surprised, the level of hate, rage, and nastiness shown in the comments here is profoundly depressing. Where is the rock these people crawl out of to comment, and then crawl back under? And as for Gore "lying" about climate change, that is exactly right. All science is lies, designed to annoy oil companies. Everyone knows that.

Posted by: lowercaselarry | June 1, 2010 2:20 PM | Report abuse

Tipper always cut a FAR more sympathetic figure than this fraud phony so-called environmental expert half-billionaire scumbag Al Gore and his DESPICABLY full of lies movie, even in places disagreeing with the very findings of the REAL Scientists that got the nobel that Gore, utterly undeservedly, shared with them. Such as gore's ridisulous claims of 21 foot rises when the SCIENTISTS IN HIS GROUP predicted at most a foot, by 2100!

So i was puzzled that Tipper tolerated the intolerable, lying, pretentious, holier-than-thou, brainless SOB so many years.

Marriage, such a difficult "institution" to maintain. Requires a lot of compromising by both parties, forgiveness and the ability to step back and realistically look at and laugh at yourself from time-to-time. Requires one to remind oneself to remember why you chose your spouse to be your spouse and can things always get back to that moment. If not, did you really have a marriage any way? My two cents of unprofessional, unsolicited input on marriage.

To: nyc98765 - The unfortunate (not the least bit inconvenient) truth is that the jerks that are weighing in on the Gore marriage do not have one half of a principle among all of them. My hunch is most of them have never been part of or witness to a long marital and successful relationship, and are personally incapable of sustaining such a relationship. That anyone publicly takes delight in the failure of a marriage speaks volumes for poll testing of ethics and intelligence.

........and we're not talking about Tipper !!!"

Tipper is hot... Al is into Cappucin Monks... or is it Cappucin Monkeys..

BUT SERIOUSLY NOW.... Nobody, gay or straight, can possibly stand Living with the GORON. That's why half the comments in this forum express PUZZLEMENT at Tipper being able to stand the SOB lying freak of nature for 40 YEARS...

I bet she did it for the children...

Oh, and for the retard that claimed to know that nobody in this forum has met the Gores, I can assure you that

1. BOTH me and my fiancee have met a far more likeable than the GORON and far more important figure, BILL CLINTON, when he visited our research institute back in the 90s, and shook both our hands,

and 2. I personally have also met TED KENNEDY back in 1981, when he looked really good, tanned (reddy face from sailing or drinking?), fit and 50. And despite Teddy's 100% WRONG political positions that have failed serially, TEDDY cut a far more sympathetifc figure than the GORON. YOu could go have a beer with teddy (although I met him and was introduced by him by my professor at the funeral of a mutual friend, when i was a grad student.. and talked to him fro about a minute or two)

While I am certainly no fan of Al Gore, I am sorry to hear that he and his wife are splitting up. A divorce is unfortunate in any circumstance, but the ending of a marriage after 40 years is truly sad, whatever the reason(s).

Every relationship ends, in one way or another.

Some people stay together for self-destructive reasons: "It's for the sake of our children." "We can't afford to live separately." "If we divorce, we'll lose the house." "Staying together is better than looking for someone else (at my age)." "What will my family (and friends) think."

All of these excuses amount to one thing: "I'm too scared to be on my own."

Others actually have the courage to make the move to part.

Forty years is a very long time for any couple to stay together.

The reasons that people stay together are very different than the reasons that got them together in the first place. It's a rare case when people continue a marriage over time, given that human nature demands that we either change or clutch to our idiosyncrasies with the passage of time, making it ever more difficult for people to stay together.

In the Judeo-Christian wedding vows, the phrase "till death do us part" was written at a time when the average age expectancy was less than thirty years.

Nowadays, if one is married in their mid-twenties, this phrase means that you can expect to be together for ~ 50 years or so.

I'm sure Tipper will not want for anything, and I personally don't care if Al chases young girls or ice bergs.

How many of you cynics have lasted, or expect to last 40 years together? And among those who have or do, how many of you are happy about it?

Leave them alone. In staying together for as long as they have, they've accomplished something that better than 90% of the population never has and never will.

I wish both of them the best.

It boggles the mind how a really good looking young woman would ever sacrifice most of her adult life to live with that insufferable, retarded (and when he speaks with his very slow tennessee or whatever accent, really retarded), lying and exaggerating AUTOMATON.

The Goron looked handsome (or at least healthy) as a presidential candidate back in 1988 or whatever, but he would prove his worthlessness as soon as he opened his mouth and showed us his EMPTY HEAD.

And he did it again in 2000, with insignificant (but HONORABLE) G W Bush as his opponent:

Saturday Night live had to use a fake word that Bush never uttered to mock bush ("strategery")

But they needed no help other than use the Goron's own oft-repeated nonsense word to mock the GORON!

"Lock-box"!

(or, as Gore would utter it, "Laaaack-boooox!")

It is remarkable that an intelligent, good politician like Bill Clinton would choose this UTTER LOSER for his VP.

The Goron's only usefulness would be to detract would-be clinton assassins...one look at the Goron and they would never hurt Bubba!

Really a sad thing after 40 years of marriage. But hasn't he lost a bunch of weight? I think the last pictures, which are not many lately, he had trimmed down a lot. I did not realize that he had been talking about a one world order since 2006. I think that is the right year. His going into class rooms & telling grammar school children that if their parents did not believe in global warming that they were wrong to say such a thing. Maybe he is trying to help Obama change us into a socialized welfare nation & after Obama he can become our dictator? It may have been before but this man has cost us the American people more then a fortune & helped to get convince a lot of those overseas. It is such a bunch of bull & irritates me that he gets away with it. They refused to show his DVD in the schools over in the UK because of the many untruths they found in it before releasing it to the teachers. Then when things like this happen he refuses to talk about it. The man that called him out on how the population of polar bears are increasing & his ignoring the guy & got a smile on his face like he was making fun of him. His superior attitude disgusts me. His disrespect for his own country & his fellow Americans disgust me. He has made enough money & he & Soros have got to be in the 1% that Hillary said were not paying enough taxes. Maybe Tipper just wanted to retire & spend time together because they are not getting any younger. I think he is addicted to power, no matter what it takes, & is so egotistical he believes he is above everybody. Oh, yes, & that kiss was even fake. Most people can see that, especially women.

The unfortunate (not the least bit inconvenient) truth is that the jerks that are weighing in on the Gore marriage do not have one half of a principle among all of them. My hunch is most of them have never been part of or witness to a long marital and successful relationship, and are personally incapable of sustaining such a relationship. That anyone publicly takes delight in the failure of a marriage speaks volumes for poll testing of ethics and intelligence.

I am deeply, deeply saddened by the recent news about the separation of the Gores after 40 years of marriage. So much for the "better or worse" part of the marriage vows. Having been there, done that, after also "growing apart," which is no joke, each can expect a period of grieving just as much as if there had been a death in the family. It will not be easy. Marriage at such a young age as was their's does not allow for individual growth and experience with other relationships and that may be part of the crux of the problem -- too late now, however. Within the last few years I watched a television interview with Tipper and Al and an attractive, blond journalist. Unfortunately, Al's eyes and demeanor seemed to be more attuned to the journalist's then to the presence of his wife who looked uncomfortably like a third wheel sitting by. I wonder if I will see Al and the journalist later and if this is when the wanderlust became more pronounced. May happier days be in the future for both Al and Tipper.

Second, it's galling to read Republican nitwits besmirching this couple's loyalty and fidelity to one another for forty years. This is not GOP congressman Mark Souder wearing his WWJD bracelet while boinking his staff member.

40 Years is a looooong time to be married to the same person and continue to be in love with them for just as long.

Marriage is hard work and that kind of work doesn't stop in 10, 20, 30, 40 years.

It requires understanding from both people, compromise, patience, sacrifices, and not taking one another for granted.

For people it becomes too much wok over time.

I wish them both well as they start their new lives a part.

Very sad. We will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary this year. It's a long haul, 40 years, and one does change. It does get different once the kids leave home and you are once again living with the person you haven't lived alone with for over a quarter of a century. Many challenges coupled with changing times and many outside stresses are tough on any marriage. I wish them both well, as do I their adult children. No one wants to see their parents divorce after such a long time (a lifetime) together.

How will all these nasty posters react when the Palins inevitably split up? The literary wet kiss Sarah gave Todd at the beginning of her book was equivalent to Al and Tipper's at the convention. I found both to be a case of "doth protest too much, methinks."

To any of the more philosophically-inclined reading this board,

Wow. Look at Tipper an Al on their wedding day, 40 years ago. How young they look! Think of all they, and this country, has been through. Pre-Watergate, ferchrisskes! They are now as old as Gore's parents - Al Gore Sr was 63 when this photo was taken. (And he would live for another 28 years.)

Whatever reason that they are ending this marriage, it is stronger and bigger than all that.

It is sad for those of us in marriages in their adulthood (above 21 years old) to see marriages like the Gores split up. Imagine if the Nixons had announced a separation in 1980. No matter how you felt about the man, you would still be sorry that you saw one of the old ones, the seemingly solid ones, the ones that give us hope that it can work on a long, long term, hope.

A 40 year old marriage looks like success to a 21 year one.

So it's sad to think that two humans beings who were in love once, had no financial problems, and had been together so long that they must have smoothed out all the corners .... couldn't make it work.

God bless them.

Fact is, she's 61...He wants some hotness before he takes the dirt nap. 61 might be attractive but it ain't 'hot' (with the exception being Raquel Welch)

He wants to feel 'alive' and no 61 year old chick is making that happen for a 62 year old dude, I don't care if she's a former p-star, stripper, etc. He's trading her in for a newer model is all.

The only reason these guys don't go harder with side chicks is because they need our votes. But make no mistake, they are as bad as athletes, actors, and rock stars...they just hide it better. Well, sometimes...

Boy, what a lot of nasty people live here. I am rather unsurprised. While they may be married 40 years, they have been traveling in different circles for much of 20 of them. Besides, as a psychologist, I can tell you that only a very few couples are in love at this stage in their lives, the rest are either companionate marriages ( more friends and social ) or one degree or another of unhappy. Believe me the snide comments here speak volumes about the writer. Be careful of where you tread, every other week there is a new Republican owning up to trysts with mistresses or hookers. That seems to be an odd circumstance and difference between the parties, we Dems don't make an issue of family values but woe be it when one strays, where as Reps don't seem to give a damn what the personal moral values are of their candidates as long as they continue making truly idiotic comments or almost sublimely nasty ones. See Glen Beck's nastiness about Malia. So leave off with the fat jokes, girly comments, Tipper getting laid remarks etc. There is nothing in this announcement that merits that kind of comment

As the daughter of a couple that stayed married for 62 years, and loved each other more than when they first met upon their death beds, I find it really depressing for some of you to say that a marriage that lasts for a long time is a sham. I am sorry that someone that has been married for 40 years is getting a divorce for whatever the reasons. It is a tragic time for their family and I feel for the children.

That being said, I was an environmental scientist for over 20 years and I find Al Gore's cry for the planet and global warming to be a bigger sham. The lies that he has perpetrated for the sake of the earth has done more to confuse and cost the citizens of the US. I always find it interesting that those talking the loudest usually just want to hear themselves talk. What an ego!

I would guess that one of the two was taken by surprise, maybe the 8 million dollar house is the "compensation" that surprised person gets.

So many vulgar and vile comments about the Gore's separation. Reveals the indecency and repulsive behavior of the political right these days. Why anyone takes pleasure in making loathsome remarks.
Does it make them feel better by celebrating the sadness and end of a 40 year relationship. These comments are loathsome and immature. Just wish the Gore's happiness in their new lives.

Al and Tipper Gore are descent people. So used to see pictures of thier life foot print from the time there were high schoolers ? I always thought, that they both were such cute looking couple until they were in public life. But now they both too set, and stately like any well married couple with grown children and may be they need a change and want to be happy? They are good people, I hope they will be happy with decisions and themselves..

But do they know what it is to be without each other at all.. ?? they all seemed to be with each other..

Al finally piled up enough money from the Global Warming scam that Tipper can get enough money from him to feed her fat face. The both of them are reprehensible. Tipper and her censorship desires for rock lyrics (while laying off of the cop-killer rappers, of COURSE) and Al with his outright theft and fraud via global warming. Creeps. They should be sentenced to live together forever.

I am with all those who feel so saddened by this. I do too. But, then I ask myself, WHY? Were they my friends? Well, er , no., they weren't. Did I know them or their children? Well, no, I didn't.
Did I ever meet them? Well, yes, once I did, along a railroad track as they passed by. You mean, you count THAT as MEETING them?
No. As it turns out, I didn't know them at all. But, I projected my hopes and dreams into them because they were "leaders", just like I did with Ron and Nancy Reagan (I mean, wouldn't ALL of the whole United States of America fallen into a state of grief had THEY divorced? Yes, we would have.)
So, it really isn't about THEM. It's about us. They report that they are doing fine and will continue into the future just fine.
But, the rest of us have lost a dream. A dream about finding someone who loves you, no matter what, and continues to love you, no matter what, and continues that from a young age to old age.
The Gore's are showing us that this is just that: a dream.

Does this mean that Tipper will get her own private fossil fuel guzzling jet to fly around the world, paid for by "green wealth"?

Posted by: factsmatter1 | June 1, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Al and Tipper Gore are two of the most admirable people in politics. It's really sad that they are separating. I had to chuckle, however, when I read in the article above that the duo's mutually affectionate manner enlivened Al Gore's "stuffy image." The authors must not remember the 2000 Presidential election. Amnesia about that election seems to be quite common among mainstream journalists. As part of the mainstream media's inexplicable war on Al Gore during that campaign they first made up the "stuffy image" and then pilloried Al and Tipper for their public displays of affection, which, the media claimed, were, obviously, calculated to undermine the "stuffy image." That's the media war which brought George W. Bush close enough to actual election that the Supreme Court was able to appoint Bush as President. We're all still living with the results of the catastrophe which resulted.

Yesterday, my husband & I celebrated our 41st anniversary in the E.R. (I had a rather strong attack of bronchitis).
I so regret reading about this separation.
I do think they deserve their privacy.
They've earned it.
Al Gore has had many spectacular highs and lows in his life and he has carried off difficult confrontations with dignity.
Tipper Gore is an admirable woman whom I deeply admire.

Sometimes people just tire of their same old, same old, especially after 40 years. My guess is that Tipper, after years of therapy, grew in another direction. Individuation is a long process and both have grown apart. Sexuality is just a small part of a relationship. When the children leave and two people have the empty nest, they have to become reacquainted. Sometimes they see complete strangers with nothing in common and feel the need to start over again, alone. I imagine Tipper may have felt smothered by a man born of privilege who sought the limelight of politics.
The Clintons are a different story. Hilary has from the beginning lived her own life regardless of the marriage. I'm sure there were fireworks that eventually forged a bond that goes far beyond sexuality.

There are Congress people that may be more corrupt than Gore, or more idiotic and clueless, but NONE is more PHONY, none makes up stuff with a straight face so easily, none other claims they created the universe three times over.

Let's be reasonable here - why do we even care? Their lives, their decision, none of anyone's concern. They put it out there, another political/personal caper to get the public commenting. As far as the kiss picture posted everywhere from 2000, come on, it was 10 years ago. 'Life' has happened since then. As always, the children should be first and foremost. Get on with it, it is insignificant to these times.

Thankfully, we are living with that. Beats the heck out of living with the disaster which is the Big O administration. The federal response to Katrina was governed by the 1988 Stafford Act, which says that in natural disasters on-shore states are in charge, not Washington. The federal obligation is to "support State and local assistance efforts" by providing whatever resources a governor requests and then writing big checks for the cleanup. W had to deal with a Louisiana governor and a New Orleans mayor who were in charge pursuant to federal law. Contrast that to the Big O, who by law is directly in charge of the BP oil mess, which occurred in federal waters. Months later, he sits, he waits, he delays. What has O done to protect our wetlands, our shorelines, our beaches, our Gulf? He even allowed that dispersants be used underwater, which screwed things up worse. Big O is done. The worst President in the history of our nation. Thank goodness the nation woke up and the incumbent dems are being ousted in record numbers. And Tipper, you have to give it up once in a blue moon, or things like this happen. Maybe Big O has a position for you in his administration. You'd fit right in, Mrs. Irrelevant.
