Fred Thompson grows a beard, writes a book, is done with campaigns
How you can tell Fred Thompson's not going to run for office again: He's grown a beard, like Al Gore after 2000, and put on the extra pounds most hungry pols won't allow themselves.
Also, he says so. "I'm not running again," he said on a sweltering Saturday (sweat soaking his lavender dress shirt) at a party in his honor at the home of lobbyist Juleanna Glover.
This was after we asked if his new book, "Teaching the Pig to Dance," is the kind of inspirational tome a politician writes to gear up for a big race, or the kind of tell-all he writes when he's done. "It's neither!" he rumbled. "It's a memoir of growing up," he emphasized, "and second chances!" Which is... "That's the subtitle," he said, grinning. (Indeed, word for word. The book focuses on his childhood and early career in Tennessee, pre-Hollywood, pre-Senate.)
Sticking to the script like a politician, eh? He chuckled. "I never stuck to the script when I was in politics."
