While we were out: Joe McGinniss and Sarah Palin, Melissa Leo, Gary Coleman, Dennis Hopper
Sorry if things are looking kind of empty here -- hello, Memorial Day weekend, remember? Fortunately, our colleagues have offered up all kinds of fascinating personalities news in our absence.
If you only read one profile of an actor this year, make it this visit (by our colleague Dan Zak) with a candid, flirtatious Melissa Leo of "Treme" and "Frozen River." She coos at him, "you haven't asked me if I'm single" (she is!), then goes on to call her son a "darling bastard." And other great stuff. (This praise should in no way detract from Peter Marks's compelling profile of Laurence Fishburne, now appearing in the play "Thurgood.")
Our colleague Dave Weigel follows up on our story about Joe McGinniss's residence next door to his book subject Sarah Palin by talking to the author himself -- who says that, no, really, he's a good neighbor for Palin because he'll respect her privacy better than other tenants.
RIP Gary Coleman. Also see Hank Stuever's 2003 story, during the child star's quixotic run for California governor, that gets at the sad truth of what it's like to be Gary Coleman. Hank conducted a live online discussion on the topic Friday. And RIP Dennis Hopper..... Finally, in Names and Faces, Celine Dion pregnant with twins at 42, thanks to reproductive technology; and Barbara Hershey and Naveen Andrews's longrunning May-December romance is even more over than "Lost."
