Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston engaged, again -- crazy, yes, but here's why it just might work!

(The latest here: Bristol and Levi: How and why?)

The most amazing real-life soap opera of our times has taken a new twist: Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are engaged.

Make that two twists: They apparently shared the news with US Weekly before her mom.

There they are on the magazine's cover, holding their 18-month-old son Tripp and explaining how they got back together after the most famous teenage breakup ever. Engaged during her mother's vice-presidential campaign, they parted shortly after their son's birth, and the split quickly turned tabloid-ugly. But they said they bonded again while trying to work out a custody plan three months ago.

"I really thought we were over," he told the magazine, but feelings changed when they went for a walk with their son. Nothing really happened then, she said, but he later texted her saying that he misses her and wanted her back. "I was in shock," she told US.

This begins to explain Levi's recent public apology to the Palin family. Bristol acknowledged that her mother didn't know they were back together yet: "It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be."

Unclear what the family discussions have been today, but in a statement to NBC's "Today," Sarah and Todd Palin said that Bristol believes in "redemption and forgiveness," and, well, if this makes her happy...

Does this all seem crazy? Yes. It also seems strangely understandable. And maybe not such a terrible idea.

Sure, there's an ocean of bad blood. (He dished dirt to Tyra and Vanity Fair, posed for Playgirl, complained the Palins were shutting him out of Tripp's life. She told Harper's Bazaar that he's "a stranger to me" and battled him in court. Her mother blasted him as a fame-seeker -- "Ricky Hollywood.")

But really, at this point, who else could either of them ever be with? The two have shared a completely unique experience: Small town teens catapulted to worldwide fame by the convergence of an unplanned pregnancy and her mother's overnight political ascendance. Who else would ever be able to truly relate to Bristol's life? Who else would ever really understand Levi? This is why people fall in love. Good luck to them.

The only way this union will work, is if Sarah leaves them alone. It was so obvious in the 2008 campaign season that Sarah was calling the shots for Bristol. That's why Bristol broke up with Levi after the election. Levi was used as a "They chose life" platform, and when the election was over, Sarah can go back to her 'fire brother in law, trooper Whooten' form of family values.
I wish Levi and Bristol well as they join together to give Tripp a stable family life.

I wonder what Levi's topic will be when he enters the world of paid speaking engagements?

Posted by: koolkat_1960 | July 14, 2010 10:40 AM | Report abuse

I truly hope you're right and this works out well for them, especially because they have a precious little boy to raise. That said, I have serious doubts. So far, Levi has only shown himself to be a very immature and self centered bully with questionable judgment. They are rushing into this complete turnaround, and Bristol's apprehension about revealing their intentions to her family could in reality be her own internal warning about marrying this man. I wish them the very best, but this situation has some serious red flags.

Posted by: jdVA | July 14, 2010 10:41 AM | Report abuse

I'm still trying to figure out why these teenagers are making headlines. But my second thought would be that Bristol Palin obviously had a low oxygen supply during her birth.

Task number one is to start calling the son by by a name that doesn't sound like something Sarah cooked up.

Oh, right, this guy is supposed to be different from the rest of the guys like him in the world?

Obviously, his 15 minutes of fame wasn't enough for him.

This guy is a scum bag, and the Palins are idiots for letting him back in when it seems pretty clear to me that he's after money, either him being able to make money from the fame, or theirs.

Levi isn't nearly as dumb as his unflattering education credentials suggest. Bristol is making a lot of money working the double talk media tour she is on. How the hell did she become a spokeswoman form abstinenece again? Oh thats right, she is a as I say, not as David Vitter, Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, and John Ensign do.

Posted by: hughesbob19 | July 14, 2010 11:26 AM | Report abuse

So, does the engagement mean that the world will be welcoming Tripp's little brother Trapp in about 7.5 months? (He'll be premature, cynics. Sheesh.)

Posted by: trichobezoar | July 14, 2010 11:30 AM | Report abuse

I've always felt a little sorry for these two. She can't help who her mother is; he can't help that he's the same as every other hormonally-challenged teenage male in the world. But for the 2008 Presidential campaign, they likely would have gone on quietly with their lives, representative of the statistics on teenage parents.

The last year or so apart from each other may end up being a blessing in disguise. They each had an opportunity to have life experiences that hopefully helped them develop and mature as individuals, which in turn will help them be better parents in the long run.

Now Levi can experience what every other husband in the world has had to deal with - the crazy, interfering mother-in-law. (What does it say about Sarah Plain that they chose to grant an interview with a magazine to explain their actions, rather than speak with her directly?) If they were smart, they'd move to a quiet little town in somewhere-other-than-Alaska.

I wish them the best of luck - I suspect they'll need it!

The Palins are really going to let this scum bag marry their daughter!

Sarah "The Bimbo" Palin is well on her way to being tryly rich.

Bristol has herself some kind of day time job on TV and I think a foundation for single mothers.

Now, who wants to bet this guy is going to marry Briston, then try to take away the baby and try to sue Bristol and the Palins for child support and alimony?

Typical Republicans.

They never learn.

Forgiveness? Maybe. But, a lifetime of love, hardship, ups and way. All this is said before you factor in the families on both sides. Naive, immature, uneducated, and too caught up in their overtime minutes of "fame".

Why is this news? If Sarah Palin were Joe the plumbers daughter, it would simply be the story of an unwed mother who is marrying the "babydaddy", and it certainly wouldn't be national news. We have turned into a nation of voyuers avidly watching the lives and actions of what we loosely term celebrities. Get your own lives people.

I'm not a betting person, but I would definitely lay money on her being knocked up again. What do you mean "tabloid-ugly?" There's no difference between the tabloids and mainstream media today. The entire news cycle has turned into "medialoid," defined as mainstream media infected by tabloid journalism. You're all ugly and you can no longer deny it.

This is yet more stupidity from a media that is increasingly desperate to find stories to sell the co-dependent and narcissistically dysfunctional American public. To anyone with a slightly elevated consciousness, the Palins are a dysfunctional family with a capital D. Listen to Sarah Palin speak for 1 minute and anyone with an IQ above 100 and a slightly aware consciousness will reach that conclusion. This relationship failed the first time and it will fail again. Here it seems that Bristol and Levi have learned from their mother how to manipulate the media to make more money. The media are a bunch of whores who sell their own souls for a story. The media used to function according to an ethic…but that went out the window during the information age. In America, where 50% of all marriages fail, there is no way that a narcissistic young man and a co-dependent young woman are going to succeed. This marriage will fail within 2 years or less.

Levi has no education, and didn't graduate from high school.

Levi has no job.

Levi got paid for the spread they did for cover story they did for US Magazine announcing their engagement.

If all else fails, Sarah Palin is making $200,000 a pop for her speeches, and Bristol is heading up some kind of organization for unwed mothers.

Levi is unemployed and no longer wanted because he admitted he lied about the Palins in the first place.

Now, anybody wanna try to tell me why they think this guy is NOT in it for the money, the security, and so he can go along with the Palins on their Hawaii vacations?

Poor Levi and Bristol, except they are no act.

Folks in Alaska know things.... Here's what they say:

Perfect timing and something many have been waiting to see become public since at least May. Heck, check out the photo of her w/ Dr. Drew Pinsky back in May, 2010, during one of Bristol’s ABSTINENCE appearances, no less….

She and Levi, supposedly, weren’t even seeing each other at that time. How many babies from different fathers will Levi be raising? [This one could be Ben Barber's.]

Wonder what Candies Foundation will say about their so-called "abstinence spokesperson" now? Ha-ha...

Five articles about the Palins in one day in the WaPo is five articles too many! Must be a slow news days for all this nonsense about the Palin family to appear as fillers.

Just like tripe about Tiger Woods, who really cares.

And, ummm, we're supposed to care?

Let's just hope the kid's IQ is a notch or two above Grandma's; that should allow him to break 100.

Nice blonde kid there, I predict a DNA paternity test on Maury Povich in their future...

I would love to be a fly on the wall at the Palin homestead tonight. I'm sure Joe McGinniss is going to get plenty of material!!

Who needs Jerry Springer when America has the Palin trailer trash to entertain us full time?

For Bristol, this was incredibly stupid. She won't be able to preach on abstinence now. There goes her $15,000 to $30,000 per ridiculous hypocritical speech. Dang!!! I never got to hear her 'message'.

For Levi, this was brilliant. Now he doesn't have to work, won't have to pay court-ordered child support nor pay a dime of whatever his own income may be toward the care of his son. He can cry to momma grizzly-in-law for financial support.

What do you bet baby #2 created outside of marriage is on the way? I personally will be very, very glad when all of them go away.

I wondered why Levi was claiming in the media last week that he made up the stuff he said about the Palins and was sorry. I mean, first Levi says he's sorry, then the announcement, then Sarah's support?

Poor kids, to live under such a political animal. First thing they should do is scamper to a hideaway to get away from Sarah. It will be interesting to see, once married, whether Levi remains sorry.

And I'm still wondering whether Todd has had it with Sarah, or is her continual absence from home while stumping for teabaggers almost the same thing. Probably. Good Luck kids and good luck Todd. Don't let her screw up the other kids.

Bad soap opera. Dysfunctional family. What's next? The deadbeats a gold digger, Bristol's a fool and Mom's off flapping her mouth for BIG bucks or killing animals. - My opinion as yes, a Republican.

The press has done exhaustive work in exposing every aspect of the background of a woman who failed in her quest to become VP, exploring every nook and cranny of her personal life, including the dating/marital choices of her teenage daughter. And yet we know so little about the background of the man who ran for, and became, President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama. (Remember Hilary Clinton's cryptic take on this -- that the press was failing to vet him?) I don't think I've ever read any exhaustive pieces on Obama anywhere such as Sarah Palin continues to attract, and certainly none that discussed his private life before winning election to the United States Senate. Why does the private life of citizen Sarah Palin continue to attract FAR more press scrutiny than the private life of Barack Hussen Obama? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Ill put my angel hat on for this one...

I hope that Levi and Bristol get far, far away from her mother. It is thier only chance to pursue a normal family, a normal life, and a chance to be self-defined. Good luck.

Laughing at the posters that think LEVI is the scumbag in this deal. Sarah Palin couldn't wash the stench of her stinking lies and trashy behavior off herself if she stayed immersed in the ocean for the next ten years. She is absolute trash, and, yes, you can put lipstick on a pig, but she's still a pig.
