D.C. lawyer claims he's LeBron James's father

LeBron James celebrates with his mother, Gloria James, Saturday, March 15, 2003. (AP/J.D. Pooley) More LeBron James photos.

As if LeBron James hadn't brought enough drama into his own life. While the NBA superstar was building nationwide suspense over which city he'd sign with, a D.C. lawyer quietly filed a $4 million suit claiming he was the player's father -- and that James and his mother conspired to cover it up.

"This suit is really about whether he's my son and I'm his father," Leicester Bryce Stovell, 55, told us Friday. "This is not one of those popping out of woodwork to exploit a celebrity's fame and fortune."

Stovell's suit, which challenges James's oft-told story of abandonment by an ex-con dad, is a bit of a mindbender. The Princeton grad claims he had a one-night stand with Gloria James in 1984 -- according to his story, he met the 15-year-old (he thought she was in her 20s) at the nightclub D.C. Space when she was visiting from Akron. In his 23-page lawsuit filed in federal court, Stovell claims the young woman sought him out a few months later, saying she was pregnant and planned to name her son LeBron. Stovell says he never heard from her again. (LeBron James was born in Ohio the following December.)

Flash forward a couple decades: Stovell, looking back, began to wonder if he might be the star's dad. In 2007, he contacted James's attorneys. He says that in a conference call, Gloria James denied ever meeting him, but the player agreed to provide a DNA sample. The result: no match.

But Stovell has persisted. Since settling a 2002 racial-discrimination claim against his longtime employers at the SEC, the lawyer has worked for himself -- and he's representing himself in the James case. He's convinced he bears a strong resemblance to James both in facial feature and height (Stovell is 6-foot-8); he's posted several photos of the star on his Facebook page.

James's attorney flatly denied Stovell's claims.

"There is a DNA test that came back with the results 99.9 percent conclusive excluding paternity by Mr. Stovell," said Fred Nance. "Mr. Stovell has issues, but they are not ours."

I'm missing something. This guy expects to get $4M for knocking up a teenager? Huh?

Posted by: FairlingtonBlade | July 12, 2010 12:24 AM | Report abuse

What kind of complete hack attorney is this guy?

Litigious dude...suing everyone. Sorry man, gravy train ended at the SEC, time to go back and work after 8 years off.

As for LeBron...

After the big bash in the American Airlines Arena, the King continued his national 2010 Disappointment Tour further ruining his reputation this weekend with stops in Haiti, New Orleans, Arizona and about it here. It is really FUNNY.

Maybe he's pantsuit guy's father, too. Like father, like son.

He should serve time in prison for statutory rape.

He sounds like a disgusting human being.

Posted by: kenk3 | July 12, 2010 3:53 AM | Report abuse

Assuming, against the DNA evidence listed, that this guy's claim is true, the money's going the wrong way. In addition to the confession of statutory rape, there's about 18 years of child support due plus possible repayment to the state of Ohio for possible welfare costs.

LeBron, I am your father.

Posted by: SeattXpat | July 12, 2010 8:17 AM | Report abuse

Mr. Stovell just adopt a couple of kids to make up for your deeds. LeBron is history for you!

Posted by: FutureJumps | July 12, 2010 8:29 AM | Report abuse

Give me a break! He never sought out LeBron James' mother in 20 years after he says she told him she was pregnant. And now he wants $4M because he said they covered up that he was the father. So not only does he admit having sex with a 15 yo girl, he feels is is owed money for rape.

So if we believe him a 15 yo girl visiting from Akron met him in a night club, had sex with him, left to return a few months later to tell him she was pregnant. So we have a 15 year old girl who travels between Ohio and the District apparently by herself.

His 15 minutes of fame are now over. Maybe now he can find someone else to sue.

He's probably hoping they'll pay him to go away, but he's just making himself look like a fool. Pathetic. He needs to figure out what other kids he has created from one night stands at night clubs. Ewww!

Well, what a coincidence. This "lawyer" waits until the statute of limitation has expired and he can no longer be charged for rape. He is making a mockery out of the very institutions (government, courts) that he benefitted from all his life. Makes you question affirmative action.

Posted by: cpwdc | July 12, 2010 10:29 AM | Report abuse

He's definitely the daddy. Same facial features, but LeBron has his mother's nose.

So how does that translate into him being given $4 million dollars for raping a teenager under the "I didn't know she was 15" defense?

She told you she was pregnant and you did what? Did you try to find her? Did you look in the Akron yellow pages? Did you fly out to Akron and knock on the doors of women with the same first name?

At least we know where LeBron gets his narcissism.

I once thought I could make some money by marketing a monopoly like board game called "Who Be Da Daddy." This would provide family fun for all those families whose parentage was murky. There would be squares to land on that would provide various clues, and the winner would be the one who guessed actual parentage before ending the game on the "No One Cares Anymore" square.

Then Momma Mia came out, and really made the whole "Who Be Da Daddy" concept big fun; my board game dreams died.

Now this!! Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

To most Americans, this story highlights one of major differences between blacks and whites in this country. This whole scenario seems to be "business as usual" for black people. To whites, at least to the major of whites in this country, this is quite disgusting and shows absolutely no moral values whatsoever. What are we going to do? Hmmm? Well, I'd say that the majority of white people in this country are not going to stoop this low. Disgusting! Totally disgusting! I actually remember a time when the Washington Post would not have published such a story. Under Obama, though, it seems morality simply isn't understood.

Posted by: infantry11b4faus | July 12, 2010 10:46 AM | Report abuse

I don't understand what he is expecting payment for. Does he want compensation for providing his swim team that supposedly gave LeBron his genetic makeup (but didn't really)? Is he suing for pain and suffering for being denied a relationship with his son (which he did not care to pursue)? Exactly what legal leg is he trying to stand on?

Posted by: forgetthis | July 12, 2010 10:46 AM | Report abuse

This man is obviously mentally disturbed. He probably did rape LeBron's mom because he (LeBron) consented to a DNA test. However, I don't know how he figures the DNA test is wrong. I guess it's like one of Michael Jordan's infamous mistress who subjected him to 1/2 a dozen DNA test before her claim for paternity for her child was finally rejected.

Along with a lot of entitlement and accolades these stars have, they also attract a sizable contigent of the unhinged and unstable.

It's to late to charge him with statutory rape, but that is a point. But i would like to know the truth, because if his mother knew he was the father and played this farce of abandonment and never let the boy know his father that's wrong and should be placed in the pulbic eye because it happens far more often then it is reported. And 18 years of child support wouldn't come into play. In this case, the mother would be held liable for willingly not having the father involved and taking money from the state.

A father is more than someone who donate sperms. Yep, somebody is his father but not you - the DNA test results have cleared you.

Suppose Lebron's life had turned out differently - suppose he was a thug who became famous for his criminal acts - would you be feeling the same way?

At this stage of the "game", I think that limitations would prevent any legal action against him for statutory rape. That's probably why he waited so long before trying to say or do antyhing, so he couldn't be held legally responsible for that charge or having to pay out anything. I also think it's deplorable that he would ONLY NOW try to gain any recognition of the possibility of being his father. Just when LeBrons career is in over-drive. How sick he is. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it looks like he can still be prosecuted. 18 US 3283 seems to say that if the sexual abuse was against a child, there is no statute of limitations for the offense for either the life of the child or ten years, whichever is longer. What he did constitutes sexual abuse, and since LeBron's mother is alive, he has just shot himself in the foot. Yea!

Um, so you avoid having to raise the child, have a DNA test pretty much exclude your paternity, but you file a $4,000,000 suit (I'm still unclear on charges), and this isn't about "popping out of woodwork to exploit a celebrity's fame and fortune."

Uh huh. What is Mr. Stovell sprinkling on his morning cereal. I want some.

If this suit isn't immediately dismissed by a judge, I am going to lose all faith in the American legal system.

I have serious doubts about this character's credentials as a lawyer. Why would any sane person file a high profile lawsuit involving a celebrity that screams "I raped a 15 year old"? I doubt he even studied law. Probably a graduate of whatever diploma mill took his $15 and mailed him a diploma.

I don't know ya'll. I disagree. First, Him and LeBron do look a lot, a lot, a lot a like, second how many 6'8, men did his mother sleep with that favor her son during that time? hum??. And it wasn't like he hasn't been trying to come forward, I think he's right and they tried to cover it up.

As to her lying about her age, I was 14 in 1984 and could have easily passed for 22. I had men talking to me all the time and I was upfront about my age and although they thought I was lying they respected my honesty and left me alone. I used to get into places that I was underage for as well, because I had a fake ID. Now I didn't go with older men, nor did I try to talk to any men, but I do know there were other teenagers in the clubs who lied about their ages too and didnt' practice safe underage clubbin' like I did.

This is a non-story. Why would the Washington Post legitimize this con man's claim? I'd love to read the deposition from that discrimination lawsuit he filed. This guy is a professional huckster. Keep him out of the Washington Post!

Get over it; as the saying goes. "you are not the father". If you want your fifteen minutes of fame get it from else where. Lebron is going through a lot of stuff right now and i don't think you should be one. Where were you when he was struggling with his mother.
a lawyer, should be honest and have integrity and you are not acting like one.
Shame on you, for trying to dupe this young man.
sir have some decency and go do something better.

Get a life, Mr. Shouldn't LeBron and Ms James sue you for child support? Never mind, the DNA tests show no relations whatsoever!

to georges2 and all the other bug eyed racist cretins.this is not just black and white, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the president of the united states nor his wife.
it is about greed and ignorance, this man just like dan gilbert thinks this ball player owes them something.he does not.
and if white people are exempt from lewd and trailer park trash behavior, watch any episode of jerry springer.

Let's see: statutory rape; failure to pay child support, and now after all these years this guy actually wants to be known as the biological father?

I guess times are tough. Even for hack lawyers like this dude.

His mother knows who his father is. If this man is his dad, he owes alot in back child support. She needs to countersue him for back child support plus interest. BTW congrats to him for finding a way to get his 15 minutes of fame for free and possibly some cash thrown at him in a nuisance settlement. I hope LeBron and his mother are smart and let him hear static to his irrational demands.

Why every-time a black man does something, it's Obama's fault. Why when white men rape or kidnaped little boys/girls, why didn't it get blame on whoever was president then. This country will never move forward with all this foolish Obama-mongering. Get over it Obama is your president for the next few year. The American people have spoken, peanut brains for blaming Mr. obama about the above story.
Watch China becoming a behemoth of a nation, and India developed into a technology hub, while we sit and bicker about things that are ludicrous to our national well-being .
with all this stupid partisanship and racial ineptitude we are never going to get anywhere but the abyss.

Ok you get a 15yr old preggers, deserts her and don't even act like her and child are alive and then the son that he never claimed gets large and him of all people what to sue the son and his mother? It's obvious this dude is a bum and just seeking money and media attention.

I say this all they need to do is take another DNA test with a court appointed monitor and if he is the dad LeBron and his mother need to sue his sorry a%% for back child support and slander. Hell 2 can play that game ya think okay!!

It's sad that this is the kind of garbage that the Wa Po pays reporters to write. No wonder there is no money for investigative reporting based on facts and substance.

I am curious what the statute of limitations is in this instance of self-admitted sex with a minor? Does Ms. James have a civil claim against Mr. Stovell? Also, what about a cross complaint for abuse of process given that paternity has apparently already been determined in as much as he has been precluded?

Posted by: jcwik | July 12, 2010 3:07 PM | Report abuse

Why is there so much coverage about this man? Only 6% of the American public thinks that the stimulus package created jobs. Those who demand that President Obama provide a birth certificate and those that deny climate change are given parity with the other side of the argument as if they had a point. Hey Washington Post, how about educating the public on things that matter. Who's your daddy or James daddy. It doesn't matter to me and providing the public with useful and accurate and relevant information is, apparently, no concern of your newspaper. No wonder President Bush got elected after being given his first term by the Supreme Court.

The purported father said "this is not one of those popping out of woodwork to expolit a celebrity's fame and fortune". Mr. Stovell, if that is not your intent, explain to me (and this time, explain it to me like I'm a 6 year old) why you are suing for $4M? If all you want is that everyone knows you are his dad, why sue and go public? You sir, are full of it! I wish I personally knew Ms. James because as a female, I'd have a couple of my brothers come by and kick your sorry behind for what you did to her years ago and for what you are trying to do know!

This just goes to say that the practice of adolescent black girls getting pregnant via black men has deep roots. Even today you will find hundreds of adolescent girls with children by adult males. When will the states step in and prosecute these men for statutory rape? Or does society want to continue taking care of the off-spring with our tax dollars? And this guys a Princeton grad… hummm.

Aside from all the emotional issues here, there's something "fishy" about the
DNA report results. The industry standard
for DNA testing is to express the result as
a percentage of "probability of paternity".
If the probability of paternity for these
tested samples is 99.9%, it means he's the
father. If the putative father was exclud-
ed, the result would be 0%.
There is no such thing in DNA paternity testing, as, "excluded to the degree of
