Michelle Obama, Sasha going to Spain for vacation

Michelle and Sasha Obama are heading to Spain for a little mother-daughter time. (AP/Alex Brandon)

Good summer for Spain: First, the World Cup. Next, a private visit from Michelle Obama.

The White House announced Monday that the first lady will travel next week to Spain for a "mother-daughter trip with longtime family friends." Only Sasha, 9, will make the trip; Malia will be away at camp.

No further details were released, although Spanish press reports say the trip is scheduled for Aug. 4-8 at the Villa Padierna in Marbella. Although the visit is considered a private holiday, the first lady will meet with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. (This isn't the first mother-daughter trip: last summer, Michelle, Malia and Sasha vacationed in France and England.)

The president won't be on this trip. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Obama will celebrate his 49th birthday Aug. 4 with a fundraiser at the home of Chicago billionaire Neil Bluhm -- guests will donate $30,000 each to the Democratic National Committee.

The family will vacation together later in August -- a weekend on the Florida Gulf Coast and ten days Martha's Vineyard.

With them away, hussein will be free to "entertain" his girfriend, Vera Baker. It's a WIN-WIN!

Don't these people do anything but vacation? Leaving out going home to Chicago & visiting Camp David, they've had Maine already and are planning the Gulf Coast, Spain, and Martha's Vineyard, while the rest of us deal with layoffs and paycuts.

I wish my family could afford even one vacation, close to home.

Just because the first family is capable of traveling together or separate and maintain love and honesty you should not be bitter and jealous. It impossible to compare a home-bound President Obama to the wife-cheating, scandal tainted, college dunce and failed presidential candidate John "Maverick" MccAin.

Looks like Obama is dropping in Michelle's poll, too.

According to a CBS report about a month ago, it costs about $100,000 an hour - an HOUR, that is - to operate Air Force One. It may or may not be my business if Mrs. Obama goes on vacation; it is, however, my business if my taxes are paying for it. Reports say that Mrs. Obama will have an "official visit" with the king and queen of Spain. This probably means that we tax payers will pay for the trip. The real ball breaker is that the visit will be "private" so we taxpayers who will foot the bill will get no feedback about what topics were discussed, how long the visit lasted, etc. I want to know who's paying for the trip and how much. We will probably get a whitewashed account. The costs of the trip will be "apportioned" between official and private. Tax payers will pay for the round trip on Air Force One and the Obamas will pay for the taxi ride across town to see Spain's royalty.

Addendum to my previous post.

It takes about 6 - 7 hours to fly from Washington to Spain. This means that about $1.2 to $1.4 million dollars will be spent on this trip. What's wrong with going to Ocean City?

Posted by: Paaa | July 27, 2010 8:12 AM | Report abuse

Everything the President and his family does cost the taxpayer. It has not changed. Its the same now as it was with Bush and Clinton before him. If you compare Obama with previous Presidents I am certain they are not vacationing any more or less than the others.

If you really want to cut the deficit, start with the Bush tax cuts and defense. Obama's vacations will not seriously affect our lives one way or the other. People need jobs. That should be his and our number one priority!

Posted by: sbeck1 | July 27, 2010 9:14 AM | Report abuse

I wish people would mind their own business when it comes to the Obamas personal life. These folks had money prior to coming to D.C. and they will have money when they leave. They are vacationing like people who have money and time do, no difference.

Thirty rooms for Michelle in a 5 Star hotel. I think it's unconscionable.

Posted by: Skidancer | July 27, 2010 10:40 AM | Report abuse

The Obama's have no choice but to fly on military aircraft! And private travel is reimbursed by them or the Democratic party. If you don't know what you're talking about, then keep you mouth shut. And PRESIDENT OBAMA has been working his tail off. His legislative accomplishments put W's to shame. And he didn't go off and start 2 wars that are going to bankrupt this country!!!

Dear Misty ... time to get your head out of the sand. I DO know what I am talking about and study everything that is going on in our government -- on both sides. I'm an Independent and I am appalled at the government spending and waste. Michelle should take Sasha to one of the national parks or do something to support this country.

She is renting 30 rooms at a 5 Star Hotel in Marbella ... and I can assure you that we taxpayers will absorb a big chunk of the bill.

Posted by: Skidancer | July 27, 2010 12:14 PM | Report abuse

If we taxpayers are footing the bills for this extravgance it will be an outrage. Who did we elect, the Romanovs??? Are they too good for an American vacation? I bet the King Juan Carlos visit was put in there just to make the American taxpayer have to dig in their pockets for the Empress and Grand Duchess's vacation.

Posted by: George210 | July 27, 2010 12:38 PM | Report abuse

To HSTchr...they reason you take a European trip you're not the president of the United States with a net family worth of several million dollars. The last president took the whole month of August off and headed to Texas. For you folks who've never been to DC, anyone who can gets out of Saunaington in August. That's why next month the entire congress is off, the RNC is meeting in LA for two weeks and thinktanks are holding conferences in the Rockies. As far as renting the 30 rooms, that sounds like all of the rooms on one floor of the hotel. When Prez spends the night somewhere, the entire floor of a hotel is blocked off for the first family, staff and secret service..whatever rooms not occupied are left vacant, and that would probably apply to rooms directly above or below where the prez is staying. When the prez travels its going to cost, it's part of the White House budget. I guess some of you would want the prez to fly commercial; that would cost even more than the per hour cost of running Air Force One with Boeing Business Jet rates starting at $12,000 an hour. Also a presidential vacation is not good for local business. Areas where a prez is vacationing are blocked off with very limited access and visitors can't spend money or visit areas where the president might be. When the prez went to the grand canyon wide areas of the park were closed and visitors couldn't get in, so maybe the first lady is doing a favor by going to Spain and letting them deal with the hassle and lost revenue of a prez visit rather than stressing out a small town with all the drama of a presidential visit.

Oh for goodness sakes. You people act as if a President has never, ever taken a vacation or done anything with their family. Get a grip and get off your high horse. The Obama's are millionaires in their own right and can well afford to take their children anywhere they want. And, oh by the way, because he is the duly elected President of the United States of America, his family is treated the same way as all the President's families before him. You people act as if this President is the only one who has ever taken a vacation or even had family in the White House. You very same people have whined, bi!ched and moaned about everything he and his family have done ever since President Obama was elected. You have to ask , WHY???Stop being so freaking petty and jealous. It is very boring and just shows you as an intolerant, whining, jealous person.

She would do better to spend her time doing work here in the United State of America and trying to make a better impression for her husband whose popularity is plunging. It would not hurt for her to get her hands dirty. For example, assisting with the clean up of wildlife on the Gulf Coast. Her assistants could help as well and it would not hurt Sasha to see first hand what BP had done to the coast.
Out of respect for the Office of the President and his family I wish her and her child a safe trip but I wish she would stay there.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Why should she? It has already been made quite clear, no matter what this President does it won't be enough. Some people nit pick everything he says or does. People refuse to acknowledge the accomplishments he has made. What would be the point? Did anyone ever ask Laura Bush to spend her time working in the United States to improve her husbands ratings which I might add are way lower than President Obama?

First Lady Obama has already done a great deal regarding children, nutrition and fitness. She has been roundly criticized for her efforts from some of the same people here whining. So, again, what is the point?

Posted by: catmomtx | July 27, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

"The Obamas are millionaires in their own right" and they "had money before they came to D.C."? How, please? He was a professor/community organizer and a one-term state senator, then a one-term U.S. senator. She worked for a hospital. Yes, they probably have some money, (Michelle's salary took huge jump when it looked like Barack might win) but they weren't originally wealthy and the kind of jobs they had would not make them millionaires. But they have certainly learned how to live like "The Rich and Famous" -- on our money!!!

This president and his family are entitled to all the perks of office. Because they is BLACK is no reason to insist that they travel commercial. Additionally they pay for private family ad others in their entourage which in my opinion they shouldn't. Nor should they hunker down in the WHite House because of the bad economy - no other presidents have excluding Carter and we know how that worked out.

Let's nip this travelgate meme in the bud:

Bush's 77 vacation trips to Crawford cost us $226,072 per trip. That's $17,407,544 so he could ride his bicycle in the woods and clear brush for the cameras. (That's just the estimated cost of flying Air Force One round trip - about two hours of flight time each way at $56,518 per hour. That doesn't include the entourage cost.)

George W. Bush's vacation time = 1020 or 1/3 of his presidency. He set the record for the most vacation time taken by a President.

487 days at Camp David
490 days at Crawford Ranch
43 days at Kennebunkport Compound

Total: 1020 days, more than 1/3rd of his presidency.

By comparison:

Carter took 79 days in 4 years.

Clinton took 152 days in 8 years.

Reagan took 335 days in 8 years.

Bush Sr. took 543 days in 4 years

REPUBLICANS are lazy both physically and menaitly as this vaction time indicates.

And for those concerned about the presidetial polls. Let's look at this in prespective shall we:

Kennedy-56% (9/12/63)
Eisenhower-48% (3/27/58)
Roosevelt-48% (8/18/39)
Obama-47% (12/6/09)
Clinton-37% (5/26/93)
Ford-37% (3/28/75)
Reagan-35% (1/28/83)
Johnson-35% (8/7/68)
Bush-II-29% (7/31/92)
Carter-28% (6/29/79)
Bush-I-25% (10/3/08,
Nixon-24% (8/2/74)
Truman-22% (2/9/52)

I'm no Bush fan but his trips to Crawford, Camp David, and Kennebunkport didn't cost taxpayers any hotel fees.

We are told Michelle Obama will make an official visit with Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia. An official visit is needed to justify the use of taxpayer dollars for the mother daughter bonding vacation!

The room charge at the 5 Star hotel for which she is booking 30 rooms costs $2,859 each PER NIGHT! Multiply that times 30 times 4 nights and that's $343,080 just for the hotel, not counting any food or other travel expenses.

This country is in very dire financial straits. The president and his family need to set an example, not put us even deeper in debt. And I think it's a travesty that he won't appear at the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts, but will appear on The View! How completely unpresidential ... and downright tacky!

Oh, and by the way, the Obamas have earned several million from the sale of his books. Read "Dreams From My Father" and you will understand the "Change" he wants for this country.

This is crazy, that Michelle should be taking her kid and friends to Spain during this tough economic time. While many people are not planning a vacation, because they are trying to figure out how to pay the rent and put food on the table, the Obamas are taking vacation after vacation.
I don't care what other presidents and their families did before, unless it was during the depression. He should be leading be example. Of course I would like to see him take the next 2-years off and bring Reid and Pelosi with him.

For a couple who does not like the rich, big business or anyone who has money and also think we should share our wealth they are finding that capitalism is working for them. They are working the system beautifully. What hypocrites. By the way they are worth 7 million. Who are they sharing their wealth with? They should practice what they preach and their supporters are still believing this liar.

We can sell the white house now, these narcissist elites are ne
ver there, maybe we can cut the deficit. Hugo Chavez will buy it, or maybe they can move the mosque from ground zero to Pennsylvania Ave.

Maybe though with the horrible economy they have exasperated the cost of hotel rooms are on sale.

Do you libs get it, obama's vacation while we have skin in the game. Clintons spent millions on a wedding, while we have to all have to cut back. A multi million wedding and a $15,009 + cake!

This is the ruling class vs the working class, sadly the libs voted for this.

Enjoy the hoax and chains.

So much small-mindedness and ignorance here.

angiegm2004: The Obamas got rich because millions of Americans bought his books. You can look it up. His tax forms are, I believe, a matter of public record. He's certainly not the first politician to have made money selling books, but he is one of the few who wrote the books himself!

As someone who works in the federal government, I know what it means when an "official visit" is tacked onto a vacation. It means the taxpayers are footing the bill. When my employer, a federal agency, wants to have a social hour, our agency head gives out awards to a few employees. That makes it "official business" and we get to use agency funds for the food and soft drinks. Everybody in government knows how to play this game. This is exactly what Michelle Obama is doing. She's going to have a brief, private visit with some royal guy in Spain, and now the Obamas won't have to pay a single cent of the entire trip now.
