Chelsea Clinton's wedding details remain elusive, even for guests

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky in New York this month. (Patrick McMullan/PatrickMcMullan.com)

So much mystery over Chelsea Clinton's upcoming wedding to Marc Mezvinsky! Why can't we just ask some guests what's going on?
Well, because they don't know, either. In the classic covert-ops style of many VIP nuptials these days, even the near and dear who've scored invitations are largely being kept out of the loop on the particulars.

Such as: Where is it? If not for widespread media reports pinpointing the Hudson Valley community of Rhinebeck, N.Y., as the locale, guests might not have known where they're headed this weekend.

** Photo gallery: Chelsea Clinton-Marc Mezvinsky **

"We only just found out where our hotel is," one invitee told us. Huh? Rather than let guests book their own accommodations, wedding planners took invitees' credit card numbers and offered three price ranges to choose from ... and only belatedly informed them all where they'd be staying. No one has yet officially informed guests exactly where Saturday's wedding will be held -- strong circumstantial evidence points to Astor Courts, the estate built by turn-of-the-century tycoon John Jacob Astor IV -- but, heck, they don't need to know: They'll be transported via buses directly to the site.

The point of all this cloak-and-dagger was to keep the wedding location secret -- so that paparazzi and sightseers would be thrown off the trail. (The Clinton family has not even confirmed the July 31 date, disclosing only that the couple will marry this summer.) Well, that didn't work: Journalists are already descending on the place. But many layers of control remain -- guests will have to surrender BlackBerrys and cellphones before they arrive (so no unauthorized photos get out) and carry credentials (so no crashers get in). And the couple's gift registry is listed under fake names.

Guests, however, have been told how to dress: black tie. Not Bill Clinton's favorite kind of attire, but anything for his little girl.

UPDATED: Cat's out of the bag! The Clinton camp now is confirming that July 31 is the date. But you knew that.

Kinda creepy, actually. This one will end in divorce inside of 5 years. Imagine the carbon footprint of THIS little wedding party. Private planes by the hundreds, the price list reads like the wedding of Lady Di and Prince Charming Charles. A half million for this, $100,000 for that, $20,000 for Chelsea's hair and face-do, it's hilarious. And these are the peeps preaching austerity, charity and clean-green for US while they live in huge, opulent, carbon swilling-and-belching luxury themselves. This is the most piggish display of bling-bling ever by the Democrat gang. Ya have to love it.

If they are suggesting black tie it must be an evening wedding. Black tie before 5 is a faux pax except in places like Arkansas.

Where did this wingnut JamesChristian come up with these figures? Typical lying hater making crap up and then trying to pass it off as truth. Too stupid to find out the facts.

Do the Clintons receive death threats? Could this probability explain all the secrecy? Just wondering.

Posted by: Krisipuu | July 27, 2010 10:24 AM | Report abuse

JamesChristian, millionaires, billionaires, and zillionaires who've benefited hugely from tax cuts aren't giving their daughters scaled-back weddings.

Your "outrage" about Chelsea's wedding is too silly for words.

Guests forked over their credit card numbers...to strangers?? I guess everyone on the list is just that rich, huh?

Chelsea is a great young woman and I wish her all the luck in the world. Whatever you may think of Bill and Hillary, and I happen to think they are great, they did a fantastic job bringing up Chelsea who turned out to be a beautiful and accomplished young woman.

Time for all the haters to get a life and let her get married in peace.

Let them have privacy.

There are stories of importance that the Media should be pursuing instead.

Posted by: jimb | July 27, 2010 10:42 AM | Report abuse

Hear, hear, jimb! Everyone contributing to the media feeding frenzy surrounding this event should be ashamed of themselves. Chelsea and Marc are two nice, intelligent, accomplished young adults, who are not seeking (and have not sought) fame for themselves. They just happen to belong to families who are well known in the political and media spheres. They want to be able to consecrate their union and celebrate their love in privacy, surrounded by their friends and loved ones. If it were your daughter or son, wouldn't you wish that for him or her? Well, then treat Chelsea and Marc with the same consideration. Everyone who fails to do that is a boor.

The Clinton's don't want you all to know she, Chelsea, is marrying into a family where the new daddy in law is an ex con, felon, big Wall St. buddy of theirs. Want to hide that guy. Truth. Hillary was reported as being against this match because of the harm to her next Presidental run. Rich white trash marries rich white trash. May be a reality show ...

Why is this news? She is a private citizen. She leads no public life. Let's move on to real news - like the latest Obama vacation.

They couldn't "hide" the father of the groom from you, could they?

But what are you trying to suggest by mentioning it? Are the daughters-in-law of rich Wall Street criminals also criminals?

If so, there are a lot of rich Republican gals who fit that description.

But we all KNOW our free left-wing press luvs libs more then conservatives, don't we now ?

Wow the Media/Press now want to talk to Chelsea for information about her wedding, after years of putting her down and calling her every name in the book. Reporters called Chelsea a pimp while she was campaigning for her Mom. Many agreed with the insults by Republicans made against Chelsea while her Dad was President. The same media/press covered up Jenna/Barbara being kicked out of Brazil for drunk/wild/drug parties, Jenna convicted of fake license and Barbara in the hospital for over drinking. Yes now the same reporters want to be Chelsea's friend and get information. Religious Republicans attack Chelsea's husband being Jewish. They approve of Bristol being a teenage mother and her engagement to Levi without the parents being told. Jenna's fixed marriage.

The main point of all this cloak & dagger is for the safety of the primary participants in the wedding, not just to "keep away the paparazzi & sightseers". It's difficult enough for the Secret Service to protect these people on a regular day, let alone an event like this.

That's undoubdtedly true, but Roxanne Roberts and Amy Argetsinger don't like that explanation.

The jazzier story is "Chelsea is a celeb!"

What Chelsea is, is the daughter of a former president and a current Secretary of State.

Those left in the dark with idle time might want to spend it reviewing the history of Ellie Bartlet's wedding. The DVD should be easy to obtain. Those intrigued by the issues that might surround a President's daughter choice of a Jew for a husband might want to see what they can find out about Caroline Kennedy's experience. I would have thought that her choice of a Jew would have had much more potential for issues than Chelsea Clinton's.

With so many other areas around the world which should have the spotlight turned on them, the editors of the WaPo (no longer the Washington Post to me)have seeped into tabloid journalism. If not now, then soon, will "reporters" start paying sources for exclussive inside the low-down tawdry stories for news on the condition of their bed clothes, underwear and bed linens. I can hear the stampeding of dumb animals to make a deadline with news on what channel the TV was on when it was turned off last. And those I feel most sorry for are the poor, tired, huddled masses yearning for gossip believing it will set them free regardless of the destruction it may leave in its wake.
P.S.
Jenna Bush's wedding did not generate this much of an uproar making me think whether or not all this drama was orchestrated.

Well, it didn't take long for an anti-semite to crawl out from under a rock.

So far as the secrecy and security aspect of the wedding, nobody ever talks about who the final decision makers are: the Secret Service (Bill) and Executive Protection Service (Hillary).

Why are people like you always envious, jealous, begrudging other people's happy moments? Why don't you gat a life or move to the South Pole and be bitter and angry. In fact why don't you start a colony of embittered, grudgy, hateful people? The al of you can be miserable together.

Happy for te brie and groom! Mazel Tov!

I am rereading the comments... People, this is a wedding... not a State affair... it's the private life of a girl who has shunned the spotlight... All Presidents weings have been big news, from times immemorable.. from the rose garden to Cathedrals.. Chelsea stuck by both parents while the worls fed on the Monkica Lewinsky issue like a pack of hienas on a feeding frenzy. The girl stood there head held high. Tough for a young girl.
This is the happiest day of her life. Why not wish her well, and leave it at that? Envy is like cancer people... this is not a pertisan issue... quit reading into things...the obamas aren't going because they hate each other.... blah blah.. theu y aren't going out of courtesy somthey don't steal herc thunder. Period... Shut up, watch, and learn..this is how a royal wedding is planned.. I say standing ovation to the wedding planner... BTW the credit cards tjey submitted probably have a credit limit!!! I am sure nobody gave anyone the Plack AmEx...

I don't get why the Clinton's thought all this secrecy was even necessary. Sure there is interest in how she has gown up, but do the paparazzi really care about Chelsea's wedding enough to create a disturbence? She's been living an independent life in New York City for a decade and walks the streets without a throng of photogs tracking her every move. Regular Secret Service protection at the perimeter of the weddind site would have been more than enough.

Your comment is very un-Christian like James and totally uncalled for. They are marrying their best friend and have known each other for a long time which should give them a better than average chance of a successful marriage. I met Chelsea on the campaing trail and the Clintons can be proud of raising a lovely, bright and independent young woman. May their marriage be blessed! Hey, the Clintons are a political couple, and Chelsea has been brought up in that world. It is curious, though,, that they (with justification) demanded privacy for their daughter during her WH and college years. Now she is "coming out...?"

The Clinton entourage is staying in a mansion owned by a daughter of George Soros for the weekend. Other connnected "friends" are providing venues for the rehearsal dinner and other events in the area. i don't think the Clintons are actually paying for much of all of this, which jives with their SOP.

I hope Chelsea and her betrothed enjoy the "script" that has been written for them...but don't doubt this is about Bill and Hillary first, and Chelsea second.

Seriously? She's already had a facelift and a nose job and probably some kind of a chin job as well.

This wedding is disgusting in its conspicuous consumption. Can't wait for Hillary in her 2012 run to start lecturing us on austerity.

And BTW, if the Clinton's aren't paying for this shindig, who is? Us? Wouldn't be surprised if that were true - the Clintons have never been bashful about spending other people's money.
