Bristol Palin says she and Levi Johnston are over; his lawyer thinks they'll work it out, though

Levi and Bristol are busted up, again. (AP/Charles Rex Arbogast)

Well, so much for that: Three weeks after they announced their surprise re-engagement (via Us Weekly, before even telling her mom), Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are off-again, she confirmed to People magazine.

"He's just obsessed with the limelight," the 19-year-old mom said in a teary interview, "and I got played."

The split follows days of tabloid allegations that the most famous 20-year-old babydaddy in America had possibly fathered a child by another young woman -- later denied by a pregnant ex of Johnston's, though Palin told the magazine his acknowledgment he might be the daddy created a strain, exacerbated when he flew to L.A. to film a music video that poked fun at his ties to Sarah Palin's clan.

But Johnston's lawyer told us he doubts the couple is truly broken up for good. "These young folk have a lot of pressure on them right now," said Rex Butler. "All you have to do is watch that show 'Bridezillas' -- it's on and off, on and off, depending on the pressures."

Butler denied the couple's unlikely reconciliation this summer -- following a a year of public feuding -- was motivated by profit, though it's believed they were paid well for the Us Weekly exclusive. But he offered his own armchair psychology: "Bristol, if she's going to be honest, she doesn't want him in Hollywood ..... She wants him to sort of be like Todd Palin in the background while she does the running around. Levi on the other hand is not ready to settle into that role while he has other options."

Palin told People she'd seen her boyfriend only once in the past three weeks, leaving her heartbroken and humiliated. So where is Levi? "He's around," Butler told us. "He's around."

I can't help but contrast Chelsea Clinton with Bristol Palin.

Chelsea is well educated, sophisticated and low key.

In contrast, Bristol and her boyfriend are high school drop outs, drop outs with a vulgar need for attention, e.g., posing nude and doing reality shows, and couple who can't seem to figure out how many illegitimate children they have between them.

And the Republican Party vilifies Chelsea and holds these two horney hillbillies up as role models.

@Deirdre_K-

Chelsea Clinton is very much protected by the press, in order to curry favor, should Mrs. Clinton run for the White House.

Bristol Palin is very much a target for the media, since her mother is disliked by most of the media.

Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are both very intelligent people who care about their daughter and have made their wishes known and they have been respected.

To Bristol Palin, I'd either get a college education or move to another state and town, get an assumed name and try E-Harmony, preferrably the former.

If Bristol Palin wants to have a decent life, this soap opera must come to an end.
She's almost 4 years older then when she was abruptly thrust into the spotlight by her politically ambitious mother.
She needs to call a halt to the entire scene and declare herself off-limits to the press.
Once she avoids further coverage and learns to say "No comment" with energy, they will probably leave her alone.
This is sad.
Bristol has little or no peace in her future unless she can summon the strength to take her own destiny into her own hands.

I can't help noticing the difference between the educated and well bred Chelsea Clinton and trashy Bristol Palin - a high school drop out who is working with Levi Johnson to figure out how many illegitimate children the two have between them.

Maybe Mama Grizzly should run for office, she sure the heck can't raise children.

Posted by: Miss_Fedelm | August 3, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

I was worried that Bristol Palin, the Tea Party's darling, would let us down again.

But she didn't. She remains a bare-foot, illiterate, unemployed high school drop-out and unwed teenage mother...in a word, what every conservative wants for his or her daughter.

Would it be too much to ask for the media to go find some fine young people doing interesting things with their lives that actually make the planet a better place and come back and tell the rest of us about them? This is a waste of bandwidth and does nothing to advance us as a culture.

Posted by: SarahBB | August 3, 2010 10:18 PM | Report abuse

How come I always hear the "Dueling Banjos" theme from "Deliverance" every time I see one of the Palin clan in the news?

Oh...and Sarah Palin should stop insulting Grizzly Bears by calling herself a "Mama Grizzly". Everybody knows that Grizzly Bears KNOW HOW TO RAISE their cubs.

Poster children for the dumbing of America. Anyone who admires this family's values should have their head examined.

Posted by: geoffnich | August 3, 2010 11:09 PM | Report abuse

I'm just amazed at the vitriolic comments about Bristol Palin. The truth is we know very little about Bristol Palin's political beliefs. I'm certainly not going to hold her mother's beliefs over her. Bristol is her own person. Many of these comments truly reveal how nasty and bitter many people's hearts are at their core. It must be awful to live your life with such bitter hatred, not to mention the fact that I think it's utterly pathetic to want to denigrate a person that you really know very little about.

Posted by: liberalsareblind | August 3, 2010 11:28 PM | Report abuse

Imagine if Sarah had Bristol's ya, upper girth.

The GOP would be quite the juggernaut.

Posted by: ingram13 | August 3, 2010 11:33 PM | Report abuse

I don't mind anything that reflects badly on Sarah Palin, but I'd like to point out a couple of things not yet covered in the lengthy reader comments. Bristol Palin did graduate from high school and she was just a fraction of a point short of graduating with honors. But she should stop talking to gossip magazines and the rest of the media about the ups and downs of her personal life. She's only causing herself pain and humiliation by going public with her life.

She should stop the weirdly conflicted celibacy advocacy gig, stop having an agent and trying to make a living at public speaking. She's a confused young woman, alone with heavy responsibilities, not much support and a publicity-hound mother. She clearly badly wants a life partner, but she's not going to find a good one by leading her life in a fishbowl.

Her life is on the wrong track with her pursuit of an unsuitable public speaking career and media exposure of her life's initmate matters. It would be good for her to become a private person and full-time college student. Her parents don't seem to be wise enough to offer her this guidence.

Posted by: cassandra9 | August 3, 2010 11:37 PM | Report abuse

They have proved me wrong. I gave them six months their relationship to last. Now it has taken 3 weeks only!

Posted by: fridamulindayahoocouk | August 3, 2010 11:58 PM | Report abuse

To correct the Republican spin:

Both Bristol Palin and Levi Johnson are high school drop outs, like most trailer park residents, but Bristol Palin did finish her high school degree at home after becoming an unwed mother.

Bristol Palin did not however achieve her mother's academic success, i.e., a junk BA degree after five years of labor at podunk colleges.

Contrast this with Chelsea Clinton's Ivy league success and low key class.

Posted by: Miss_Fedelm | August 3, 2010 11:59 PM | Report abuse

Makes one wonder if Levi ever went to real sex education instead of a Huckabee Abstinence Program.

So Levi is "just obsessed with the limelight." What about Bristol's TV appearances, $15,000 a pop speaking fees, and the fact that she has an agent, and her numerous paid interviews with gossip magazines? Is there some limelight envy here?

Bristol and Levi have pursued it as well, individually and collectively. White trash one and all. The only adult who seems to have any common sense is the First Dude - okay FORMER First Dude - who has not engaged in the family business of slime, lights and quick bucks.

oldguy2: Maybe we should have a contest between them and the Salahis for most pathetic, publicity-grubbing couple of the year.

I think Bristol and Levi would win, if only because the Salahis are much older -- what, 40's? It took them that many years to achieve their low-class pinnacle, but B & L have done it by the age of 20.

For all the 'hate' the left perceives on the right, I've been saying if you ever want to see true hatred just spin the name "Palin" out amongst a bunch of liberals. Just scan the message board above, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

The capacity for hatred among left-wingers is at once enlightening, yet not surprising given how little intellect they usually bring to policy discussions.

It is really very sad that a paper has nothing better to do than constantly ridicule a beautiful young woman who is working and raising her child. This same paper that created barf alerts over chelsea clinton's wedding. Anyone who wants to talk about white trash should look no further than the clintons. Bristol chose to have her baby and not have an abortion. This goes against the left's belief system of killing babies for sport.

Posted by: mattintx | August 4, 2010 11:03 AM | Report abuse

who is Levi?

Posted by: WB12 | August 4, 2010 11:24 AM | Report abuse

Ah yes - the Palins - those so called virtuous people who talk about reclaiming god, and saving marriage from gay people.

While their children see through the lies and hypocrisy, and show the parents what they think of them by lying in bed with their boyfriend naked.

And didn't Levi boy do a gay porn movie or photo shoot? Who'd want to have as a mother in law a showgirl idiot, who has been helped to some wierd stardom, while she and her party borrow from Gobbels "if you tell a lie often enough, it will be seen as the truth". In their denigration of gay people, and Palins Lock and Load or REload - a call to violence by the republican party to regain control.

So they can continue the rape and pillage of the middle class, while turning America into a Christian clone of Saudi arabia.

Where Palins daughter, if she lived there would probably be forced into an abortion and be whipped or even worse, for violating their "moral values"

Dems - you should be able to run a smear campaign against palin with this daughter thing and Levis love me honey boys - to expose the hypocrisy, and drive some real rampant homophobes to stay home during the election.

Where are your gonads, or are you going to let the theocrats make America the new

(anything but) Christian Theocracy of America?

btw, here in MD we have this redneck delegate in the MD house of delegates. The guy who seems obsessed with anti-gay marriage amendments. The same guy who is known in the gay community for having danced half naked in a now defunct gay bar a couple decades ago.

And I knew a few kids who knew his kids. His oldest daughter had a hell of a reputation, so I am told. About the only thing that didn't happen is she didn't get pregnant, or maybe did and had an abortion.

And I was told by the kids who knew her and her siblings, that they think their father is nuts.

Great job these so called moral values parents do. At least the kids see through the hypocrisy and lies of their parents.

Hey People and Us Magazines - I'm working on getting a divorce, how about paying me? I could sure use the money to pay for my move. Why does anyone pay attention to the Palins...because everyone wants to see how low these pitiful people will go to get attention.

Why is to the people and party that want to instruct the rest of us on Family values, morality, Service in defense of their country, and fiscal discipline are represented by the Palins, Sanfords, Vitters, Limbaughs, Gingriches, and all the other cast members that can't seem to practice what they preach?

And why is it that so many people choose to listen to and follow these paragons of principle?

It's like going to doctors whom have a reputation for botched surgeries or misdiagnosis, or a lawyer that is incompetent or dishonest.

And they wonder why people think they are dumb!
