Your Questions Answered: The Rhee-Johnson wedding postponement

Rhee and Johnson, 2010. (Ricky Carioti/TWP)

On Tuesday, Michelle Rhee and Kevin Johnson abruptly announced that were turning their big Sept. 4 wedding in Sacramento into a small family ceremony on an undisclosed date and at an undisclosed location.

  • Did they give any reason? In an e-mail to guests, Johnson said, "We under-estimated the intensity of interest ... As a result, the wedding as planned for September 4th ended up not being what we wanted." Rhee told TBD Wednesday: "It was becoming a little bit of a production. We want our wedding to be something that's personal and fun and romantic and something that we really enjoy instead of something that's driving us crazy."

  • They finally figured this out two weeks before the wedding? Hey, they're busy people with a lot on their plates.

  • Any other possible issues? Two: Rhee's tenure has become a lightning rod in D.C.'s Sept. 14 tight primary race between Mayor Adrian Fenty and D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray. And Mayor Johnson got a lot of grief for having the wedding dinner and dance at the mansion of Sacramento developer Angelo Tsakopoulos, a longtime friend who has close ties to City Hall. "He asked to use our tennis court for his reception," Tsakopoulos told us Wednesday. "It's not a big deal. That's what friends do for one another."

  • How many people were invited to the original wedding? About 200 friends received the elegant invitations this month, although it's unclear how many people were coming from the District.

  • If I got uninvited, do I still have to send a wedding gift? You could send your non-refundable airline ticket to Sacramento. Or, if you're feeling generous, the couple is registered at Macy's and Michael C. Fina. (Five-piece place setting of Haviland Clair De Lune china: $375.)

  • Is this wedding really going to happen? Yes, said Rhee: "We're happy and in love."

Hmmm, maybe some of the women Johnson sexually harassed got invited by mistake, or could it be that the money he embezzled ran out? Michelle call Elin today. You never know when you need a good attorney!

Here's my question for the FAQ:

Who gives a crap about any of this?

The problem with writing for a world-famous newspaper is that you have to remember that not everyone reading your work will be local. This goes doubly true for featured articles.

In short, who are these people?

Ok, the Cliff Notes:

He is a former NBA guard and currently "embattled" mayor of Sacramento, who has been accused of both stealing money from a Federal summer jobs program and sexually harrassing some of the young women in it.

She is the "embattled" head of the DC public school system who loves to fire teachers and blame the system's woes on teacher incompetence because it is politically incorrect to point out that the city's almost 75% out of wedlock birth rate among it's majority black citizenry might have something to do with the system's problem.

Any questions?

Yep, the body language in the photo "Duh, why is this skirt always trailing me" sure suggests that the posters from yesterday were in fact right, she is getting dumped!

She's in denial about that of course. There is a whole lot of that going around in the Fenty DL demimonde these days.

"Is this clown Johnson a "frat brother" of Fenty? If so, any woman would be of little use to him beyond whatever cache he perceives she might bring as an ornament.

Aren't they a bit old to be registering for china? I wouldn't buy $400/setting china for two people old enough to be able to afford it themselves or be sensible enough to not get it.
