Meghan McCain plays hooky from book tour, gets caught via her own tweet

Meghan McCain, 2009. (AP/Matt Sayles)

Live by the tweet, die by the tweet.

With just three days' notice, Meghan McCain canceled a book tour appearance Thursday at Pennsylvania's Juniata College because of "several unforeseen professional responsibilities," her rep told the college.

Busted. The Chronicle of Higher Education looked at McCain's Twitter account and found this: "First real time off in months -- was gonna rest up for phase two next week of my Dirty Sexy Politics book tour," she tweeted Thursday night. "But headed to sin city with my favorite crew of sinners instead ... Viva Las Vegas baby."

And McCain kept on tweeting: No apology to the college, just a hissy fit about how the MGM messed up her hotel reservation and her move to the Palms.

McCain's rep, Kenny Rahtz, told us, "I have nothing to say" -- then abruptly hung up.

We're not angry that she's not coming. We're angry that she lied to us and told us it was her "professional responsibility" to apparently go to Las Vegas. You're a poor politician, honey. You don't lie well enough.

But she's not a politician, mooseisloose. And, do you think, that corporations (think Tony Hayward and a long, long line of others) and lobbyists don't lie?

Typical republican. Talks a big game but when the chips are down they bail on you. Ask the voters in Alaska. Their governor did it to them.
See you in Tea, Sarah.

Posted by: TOMHERE | September 24, 2010 7:24 AM | Report abuse

Classic. This happens so much nowadays. A coworker calls in sick, then their facebook page is filled with comments AND PICTURES of them at the beach.

Some serious disconnects going on.

I get the feeling that McCain is very immature, especially for a 23 year old Columbia graduate. With all of that expensive education, she shouldn't be sounding like a teenage Valley Girl when she talks or cancelling out on engagements with lame excuses.

Posted by: Sandydayl | September 24, 2010 7:54 AM | Report abuse

Perhaps the most brazen, surely the most corrupt example of this kind of thing lately has to be Eleanor Holmes Norton shaking down a lobbyist, by leaving a voice mail message!

"...As the senior member of the um, committee and a subcommittee chair, we have obligations to raise, uh funds. And, I think it must have been me who hasn’t, frankly, uh, done my homework to ask for a contribution earlier. So I’m trying to make up for it by asking for one now..."

Just about what one would expect from the parenting of McLame and the mobster's daughter.

That acorn did not fall far from the tree.

What a self indulgant dope.

Posted by: cadam72 | September 24, 2010 8:15 AM | Report abuse

She must be back for sinning in Vegas, because last night she attacked Bristol for being a nastier skank than she is. On the Daily Show, she told John Stewart,

"But when you’re sent to an image consultant and [it's] said that you look like a stripper and you talk bad and you’re hurting the campaign when there’s a pregnant teen there, it does a little bit to your self esteem.”

I wonder whether one or both of these young Republicans sport a tramp stamp?

As a proud graduate of Juniata College, I would just like to thank McCain for her blatant display of immature and boorish behavior. Juniata, a college ranked among the Top 100 in the United States, gained some much needed publicity. McCain gained some much needed publicity showing her true colors. I wonder if Chelsea Clinton ever stood up a college to go to Las Vegas?

Posted by: fishman2 | September 24, 2010 8:46 AM | Report abuse

Wake me when she makes a skin flik.

Hehehe, got it, it was a publicity stunt that both the college and Meghan came up with. Well, maybe that's a bit creepy, but this WaPo story shows it was a success!

What is it younger people still don't get about disseminating information publicly?

Posted by: sarahabc | September 24, 2010 9:12 AM | Report abuse

Eh. She's just basically a kid, and clearly an inconsiderate one. But all in all, who really give a rat's as$?

Posted by: Greenwaver | September 24, 2010 9:17 AM | Report abuse

Meghan's 'issues' might have something to do with going to an all girl Catholic high school. Just sayin'

As for "younger people" who don't get it sarahabc, see above in re Eleanor Holmes Norton.

Another slutty Catholic school girl who didn't get her way. Yawn. Perhaps she should leak a porn tape.

"As for "younger people" who don't get it sarahabc, see above in re Eleanor Holmes Norton."

How about Jane Harman having an unsecured wireless network at her house? That was stupid AND dangerous.

Posted by: mrsaun | September 24, 2010 9:53 AM | Report abuse

At 26 she should be more mature than this.

Meghan went Maverick?

Looks like she's inherited her father's sense of integrity.

Poor little Republican.

Posted by: SarahBB | September 24, 2010 10:23 AM | Report abuse

Megan, like her father, speaks out of both sides of her mouth. While this increases the noise, the conflicting statements convey reduced intelligence.

Posted by: laurelphoto | September 24, 2010 10:31 AM | Report abuse

No one would care what she wrote or what she did if she weren't John McCain's daughter. I still don't care.

She should have learned a lesson from the priest who called in sick on Easter Sunday, then made a hole-in-one.

liar like her father and a condescending, self-absorbed twerp like her mother.

By gum, she's a "maverick".

Posted by: mitlen | September 24, 2010 11:04 AM | Report abuse

The difference between the twats Meghan McCain and Lindsey Lohan is their last name.

Not that McCain carries any intellectual heft. Just some political identity for the so called "patriotic" white trash to hang on to.

Posted by: kblgca | September 24, 2010 11:15 AM | Report abuse

What a ditz.

Posted by: herzliebster | September 24, 2010 11:34 AM | Report abuse

Hey all you McCain/Palin voters, look what kind of trash you almost put into the White House. This Paris Hilton wannabee is no Julie Nixon, not a Chelsea Clinton either.

Posted by: shrink2 | September 24, 2010 11:39 AM | Report abuse

Get Real! You rip Megan McCain for screwing up as if it's on a par with The Kenya Boy.

I won't fault you for not voting for her though, but just in case most of you aren't up to the latest news SHE'S NOT RUNNING you MOROONS!

I just love Buggs Bunny!

Posted by: TexRancher | September 24, 2010 11:49 AM | Report abuse

But TR, if you had had your way, just think of the fun we would have had with Bristol, her white trash dropout, home schooling *partner* Levi and her grizzly mom all subordinate to this preening tramp...and the first couple.

Posted by: shrink2 | September 24, 2010 12:01 PM | Report abuse

Sorry folks, I just can't stop laughing at Meghan "I have a tattoo and I am a Republican" McCain.

When I look at her oeuvre, one word that does not spring to mind: classy.

But hey, what do I know, at her age I had already worked my way through college and was paying my own way through medical school; had no time and no money for sinning in Vegas baby. What an idiot.

Posted by: Senjata | September 24, 2010 1:44 PM | Report abuse

"several unforeseen professional responsibilities,"

Maybe, since it's legal, she is a pro in Las Vegas, and she had to take care of some clients....

Posted by: shotsie | September 24, 2010 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Good grief---that girl is as stupid as she is obnoxious, and clearly not adult enough to be a cashier at McDonalds--much less the polical and cultural icon she imagines herself to be.

I've seen plenty of girls like her. Their fathers were important, they've been pampered and flattered their whole lives. It's only natural for them to assume that the rest of the world looks at them with the same servile adoration as their nannies did.

Posted by: Rachel22 | September 24, 2010 2:55 PM | Report abuse

What is that quote by Dolly Parton....It takes a lot of money to look this cheap.

Posted by: Bellamia | September 24, 2010 3:08 PM | Report abuse

Wow do I dislike her. She is an entitled overweight uniformed mess. She likes to say she has a tattoo, toe ring, likes sex, is for gay marriage, enjoys alcohol and doesn't want to work for a living. The only difference between her and most of the rest of the 90% of high school kids is that most high school kids grow up, and get educated when the realize they have to eventually work for a living. Ms Mc Cain still sucks the t*t of her mommy.
The funny part is that she had the nerve to say she didnt like Bristol Palin. Why? Because Bristol and Sarah stole the attention away from her Fatt butt. Now thats funny.
Ms Mc Cain- dont go away mad- just go away.

The left wing medias favorite republican and Rachael Maddows favorite interview subject because she bashes republicans turns out to be a total ditz.

Go figure. Could you guys take her, really you seem to love her so much?

Posted by: robtr | September 24, 2010 3:48 PM | Report abuse

Don't know anything about Ms. McCain. But I can absolutely guarantee that Chelsea Clinton didn't cash in on her parents experience to right a tell all book trashing the Gore daughters. For that matter, The Bush twins, after a rocky couple of years, have also behaved with grace, maturity and class. It isn't a political thing -- it is individual, maybe family influence.

Posted by: candyroot | September 24, 2010 4:00 PM | Report abuse

robtr, sorry, she is all yours. Don't forget, you people almost voted this skank into the White House. Besides, we Democrats already have plenty of Recovery issues we have to work on, the last thing we need is a train wreck like Meghan McCain.

TOMHERE blathered: "Typical republican. Talks a big game but when the chips are down they bail on you. Ask the voters in Alaska. Their governor did it to them."

Or, ask voters in Illinois who repeatedly had their Representative, then their Senator, abandon, or attempt to abandon, every public office he was voted to in the state.

I refer, of course, to the carpetbagger from Jakarta, I mean Hawaii, Barack Obama. Choke on the hypocrisy, lefty.

As far as "typical Republican," no, genius. Megan McCain is a typical RINO. The conservatives would just as soon she join the Democratic Party, as it is the liberal freaks she's constantly trying to appeal to. We'd just as soon disown her.

Posted by: hp_loveshaft | September 24, 2010 5:13 PM | Report abuse

Woman, please, just go away! I've seen the way you carry yourself. You make a fool of yourself time and again.

Posted by: Willo1408 | September 24, 2010 5:43 PM | Report abuse

Typical of a member of the McCain family, I'm afraid. Different rules apply to her. She can do what she wants if it serves her purposes, etc., etc. I've enjoyed some of her blog posts, but she just went down in my estimation. Don't screw with the public, Meghan dear, they're your bread and butter.
