Michelle Fenty gets weepy in rare appearance at D.C. mayoral debate (VIDEO)

Michelle Fenty watches her husband, Adrian Fenty, in a debate with D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray, Washington, D.C., September 1, 2010. (Nikki Kahn/TWP)

The headliners were two men on a stage, debating which of them should be elected mayor of Washington. But the scene-stealer was the emotional woman on the sidelines.

It was the first time that many of the city's veteran pols and reporters had heard Michelle Fenty speak -- not to mention weep -- in an impassioned defense of her husband, Mayor Adrian Fenty.

"The reason he goes out there every single day, moving a thousand miles an hour, is for the people of Washington, D.C.," she told a scrum of journalists, her voice cracking, after the Washington Post-sponsored debate Wednesday between her husband and challenger Vincent Gray at the Newseum. "For them not to understand that the whole point of his actions is for them is very difficult."

The 40-year-old lawyer and mother of three has been an enigmatic figure in Washington -- a glamorous presence on the charity gala circuit, yet largely absent from her husband's political affairs. She arrived at the debate in a white belted sheath dress, with her sister Athena and stylist friend George Worrell. Later, she explained she had chosen to talk because she's hurt by the perception of her husband -- now lagging in the polls -- as aloof and one-dimensional.

"They haven't seen the personal side we see every day," she told the reporters, in the British accent of her London upbringing, reports our colleague Hamil R. Harris. "There are many misconceptions about him and about us."

Will we see more of her on the campaign now? "Absolutely," she said.

Boo. Hoo. Hoo. Cry me a river. Tell it to the thousands of DC government employees who have had their lives ruined by this man's utter disregard for the law, court orders, arbitrator's decisions and union contracts. Cry for the taxpayers who foot the bill for your little darling's cronyism and the legal judgments Peter Nickles has cost the city. Sorry Missy. Your little darling is a tyrant and he will be retired very soon. Keep your tears.

All the people in this town he has direspected over these 3.5 years! Want to shed tears?

He gave contracts to out of town businesses instead of local companies. Just to fill his own war chest. After local businesses had worked hard to survive and supported him.

Tell your child they can't return to college next semester because you lost your job, at no fault of your own.

Wanna shed some tears....

Shame on you for writing such foolish garbage. The WTU did not steal millions, Gray did not overspend the Summer Youth Program, and as for role models, yes, lets keep the disgraced lawyer who stole money from an elder gentlemen who he was suppose to be protecting.

Please waste your vote for Fenty but DO NOT LIE. At least read and try to get your facts straight.

Your post is an act of desperation.

The reason he is out there every single day moving a thousand miles an hour every day is NOT for the people of the DC. It's because the man is thoroughly addicted to power, domination, and control. And his wife is playing the role of a co-dependent. She needs to wake up and find herself a new man.

And exactly why do we readers need to hear that Michelle Fenty was wearing a "white belted sheath dress"? That is a sexist detail that might have been acceptable last century, but not today!

Hi guylady201001,

Please read the following:

http://www.unionfacts.com/articles/crimeWTU.cfm

With respect to Grey and the Council: The argument is that they manufacture issues. I maintain that the summer jobs program is beneficial to the city's youth and to the city as a whole. Grey claims lack of cooperation but instead of cooperating creates division. He did this again by blocking an extension of the program this summer. Notice Marion was absent during the vote. You can read about it here:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dc/2010/08/in_a_9_to_2_vote_tuesday_the_d.html

Maybe Fenty does not want to meet with Grey because Grey does not know how to compromise. Barry as clever as ever just happens to not be available for the vote. So what is really going on here? Is it a real debate or just another example of Grey making trouble.

I am not buying these tears. Even if they are authentic, Mayor Fenty is the man behind thousands of tears all around the city. His administration has accused fired teachers of being child molesters, etc. He has publicly suggested that terminated employees were fired because they were ineffective when, in reality, they were officially fired due to "budget pressures". So, yes, Michelle, the public perception of Adrian Fenty as a monster is right on point.

These tears seem more about accepting the reality that the door of his administration is slowly coming to a close. A new dawn is upon the city where the ENTIRE city can grow and prosper.

Michelle Fenty is no Michelle Obama, her presence is not going to boost support for Fenty. This is nothing more than the Mayor throwing everything but the kitchen sink at this election.

Word on the street is that he concedes that he may loose and, if he does, intends on running as a write in at the behest of the Washington Post in November. Throwing the democratic party under the bus.

I tell you this man and this paper know no boundaries. They are both on a sinking ship. Seen the Post stock numbers lately?

From my own perspective, since he's been in office, obtaining a DCRA electrical permit is now civilized and orderly. It now takes a 45 minutes to a hour for the process, instead of the normal 4 hours. Instead of four people handling the paper work, it's down too three. So, he's upset some people, who no longer have a J-O-B. I guess they won't be voting for Mr. Fenty.

He's got my vote.

Those tears could mean a lot of things but it doesn't matter. There are a lot of unemployed people due to her husband, whose tears don't matter to him at all. The tears are just another act of desperation. The man she describes is not the man we see. So it doesn't matter to the voters. The man the voters see is the man that must go and he's the man that Deborah Nichols had to take to court to fight Peter Nickles for refusing to submit documents that involved your government dealings and the thousands of dollars that you were paid for questionable work on a waterfront project. Actually, I found this drama insulting.

Posted by: luvleep | September 2, 2010 10:22 AM | Report abuse

I can't wait for the boomarang to fly back at you people.

There are about 8 regular posters on this site that have absolutly no class. And, they clearly work with Gray.

They have been the source of most of the vile lies. And, they spread them with the most persistant committment.

Maya ANgleou calls you a liar and says that she never said what you claim she said. Does that stop you...no. You just keep the lie alive.

Now, Fenty's wife is crying in abvious pain about the lies that you spread. And, what do you do. You lie again.

You reap what you sow. And, you are sowing a lot of lies. You are sowing seeds of pain and humilitation.

You watch how that comes back on you personally. You can hide under your avatar. You can't hide from Karma.

Fenty has made his mistakes. And, he is obviously paying for them.

What are you going to get back from this pile of rancid lies you spread?

If Fenty loses on the job that he did or didn't do...then that is what was supposed to happen.

On the otherhand, if you drag electoral politics into the National Inquirer zone then that is what will be expected next time. So, be careful what you ask for.

You really think that the Feds aren't watching this election? Marion Barry did the ole "she is a tom" crap on Kelly. What happened right after that?

And, Gray can't get people jobs. The unemployement rate in 7 and 8 will be higher in four years. And he can't stop corruption. It is a natural event that happens in every government in the world. and he can't stop this near depression that we are in. And, being in the pocket of every union in town, he won't be able to keep spending in check.

Be clear, those republicans are waiting to slap that reveiw board on our backs

Enter the Year of 2012.

What is going to happen when they convince half of America that Barak is a Muslim (like Adrian is an atheist) that acts like a king (King Obama...King Fenty). When they take over the House and now they investigate and attempt to impeach Obama during the presidential run (sound familiar Mr. Gray)

That is exactly what You people are doing to Fenty. You will be crying up and down the street when the Republicans do that Obama.

At the end of the day, Just like when Barry got back in by snubbing his nose at white people. DC won't be able to buy a pencil without calling Mitch McConnell.

Vincent Gray is for Vincent Gray. He is a 70 year old man that doesn't give a damn about 10 years from now. Because he might not be here.

We, our children, have to live hear for the next 20-30 years. 1990 was 21 years ago. We have come a long way. But it was not due to Marion Barry or Vincent Gray. It was despite these people that our city has grown into a better place.

Don't let lies and that "He ain't a die in the wool homie" crap send us back down the river.

I don't think her British accent is helping her at all. I'm not from the area, so I know that native Washingtonians greet all outsiders with skepticism. I know plenty of first ladies who completely stay out of the limelight. Mayor Nagin's wife... I don't even know who she is or what she looked like. This is her husband's fight. She can go back to being a private citizen. I just think she is afraid of the potential loss of stature she may have to face herself.

I understand Fenty hasn't handled power wisely, so he is arogant and a bit childish....the fact is the city is moving in the righ direction. I myself don't want to continue to pay for private school, it's tough on our family. Our school system needed major overhaul. Fenty and Michele Rhee are doing just that. Though it's exteremly uncomfortable for some to change status quo..I appriciate steps they've been taking to accomplish the goal. Real change is never ever easy! Fenty certainly has my vote!

I am appalled at the sight of Michelle Fenty crying and pleading to the residents of DC. Where the heck has she been all of this time? Where was she with all of this "compassion" when the teachers were fired? It may have been a little more believable had one tear fallen. She must've honed her acting skills at the Beyonce School of Thespianism.

Fenty has been the Mayor for four years and there's NOT ONE prominent African American that he can ask to reach-out to the African American community on his behalf.

Fenty disrespected Maya Angelou; had Dorothy Brizill (of dcwatch.com) ARRESTED; tried to force Cora Barry from the SE Tennis and Learning Center; wouldn’t return any of Minnie Harris (Ward 4 community activist) calls, and dissed Dr. Dorothy Height(97 year old, civil right leader).

Mrs. Fenty is a stranger to the residents of the District of Columbia and her campaign tears will NOT sway one vote in Fenty’s favor.

Posted by: GoldCoast | September 2, 2010 11:11 AM | Report abuse

Maybe she's crying because if he looses the race, he will be at home more..getting on her nerves. I find it very interesting that she has not really been in the public eye AT ALL, except for the balls, etc. Are they really married, when does he have family time? Does his kids have school plays? Like seriously, Fenty is rarely seen with his family. But if there is a ribbon somewhere in the city...he's there to cut it.

I am somewhat pissed at Fenty for reasons different from what pisses off most Gray supporters, but Fenty made a very good case for education during the debate.

Gray, on the other hand, is hanging his hat on "creating jobs" and discussed vocational training. However, these types of jobs are on the wane in this country! Fenty is right about the need to immediately and drastically change the entire foundation and perception of the school system here in DC. I think I am going back to Fenty's camp.

The DC teacher's union is downright evil and must be held accountable. And Fenty appears to be heading in that direction!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/04/AR2009110402630.html

No more federal custody for ex-union chief Bullock<

By Bill Turque
Thursday, November 5, 2009

Former Washington Teachers' Union president Barbara Bullock, sentenced to prison in 2004 for masterminding the theft of nearly $5 million from D.C. educators, was released from federal custody Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said Bullock, 71, has been in a halfway house and under home confinement since her release from Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia in May.

She served about five years of a nine-year sentence.

Bullock will wear an electronic monitoring device and be placed under the supervision of parole officials.

Bullock and two other union officials, office manager Gwen Hemphill and treasurer James Baxter, used embezzled funds to pay for clothes, jewelry, furs, trips and season tickets to athletic events. In 2003, Bullock agreed to testify against Hemphill and Baxter. They were sentenced to 11 and 10 years, respectively, and Bullock's sentence was reduced in exchange for her cooperation.

Why is it disrespectful of Fenty and Rhee to clean up the obvious mess that the schools were in? Why is it disrespectful to put the students before the teachers? Clearly the WTU was no doing anything to improve the schools.

Bad joke is she's happy that Fenty is finally bringing home a decent check. I've heard she has been the real bread winner in that house as she is a decent lawyer. if he loses, everything will fall back on her. like an NFL wife, she wants him active and busy for her own sanity!

The future of this city directly depends on whether the school system can be turned around, so that the true bread winners who pay the bulk of our taxes STAY in the city and raise their kids here. This is crucial for the metamorphosis of DC into a world class city.

I too do not agree with most of the Mayor's decision's regarding administering to the needs of the people of Washigton DC; however, to attack the man's wife for standing by his side is a indicative of the morality of the readers of this paper when not having to look their audience in the eye.

Michelle - right on to you baby girl.

Michelle's just upset 'cause she won't be invited to any more state dinners at the White after this election cycle. Boohoo indeed.

Those are tears because she knows he is going down and he is going to take it all out on her and the family..I can only imagine the type of man he is and how he acts towards her...so sad and Michelle I have always loved her, but she cannot save her husband. Please think back to the night when he was elected!!!!! Remember her standing on the stage BEHIND him and damn near fighting to stand BESIDE him!!! "Okay that pictures speaks for itself"!!!!

Where on earth has this woman been? She's played virtually no role in helping Washingtonians. Now all of a sudden she wants to defend her husband?

Message to DC's First Lady: It would have been nice for you to sponsor a children's program, visit the sick and elderly, lend your name to charity efforts... you know, PARTICIPATE.

Honestly, at this point, I'd just like to say good luck and good riddance.

I'm no fan of Fenty. I don't want to jump on the domestic abuse rumor mill, but I will say I heard these rumors well before he was mayor and well before DC knew who Kathy Lanier was.

As i have stated before I know people (guys) that know Fenty personally from childhood and law school. They don't believe the rumors to be true. no one was there so none of us know. my freinds shared she is a more traditional wife than people realize. Yes, she's lawyer but she is a traditional lady too. (that's a complement to her.) She was raised well to do Caribbean. She's not subservient, but she ain't American in your face bold and aggressive either. She's not what many people expect her to be given her profession.

The real question is how much work has fenty's wife brought to her law firm? she's been quietly making money while her husband was mayor, I think she will be quiet for the rest of the campaign.

Is Washington trading up with Gray. I never knew William E. Smith work at single homes. Gray going in side-way.

At least Fenty has the backbone to get the job done, make hard choices, and take on the teacher's union who care more about their jobs than teaching our children.

Posted by: kazmier | September 2, 2010 1:08 PM | Report abuse

Gray and much of the Council are corrupt politicians, bent on handing out DC contracts to their friends. Expect more of that if Gray is elected. And expect a Republican Congress to impose further control in response.

Fenty is an arrogant man who has not delivered as promised. Expect more of the same if he is reelected. At least his actions are not criminal. And if he's elected Republicans in Congress will dampen their colonial lordship of DC.

Some choice.... As a long-time DC resident I wish there was a viable 3rd alternative.

Such a such a pity that the Maryland Legislature declined ex-Speaker Gingrich's offer to cede most of the District of Columbia to it, creating two new congressional districts (sure to be Democratic) in the process. Maryland declined because the price tag to repair the District's deteriorated infrastructure was estimated to be several billion dollars. Gingrich can be faulted for not sweetening the deal more than he did, but Maryland definitely dropped the ball as well.

The existing arrangement is an anachronism. It was created during an era when sectional strife (not urban decay) constituted the major social menace. The District existed to be neutral ground between slave and free states. Today's technological complexity renders this scheme of government moot; why Fenty and Grey don't matter.

@hellenmesfin so have your kids moved to a public school yet?

@johng1 do you really mean that vocational jobs is on the decline? Really? Do you own a home? Because I hate writing those fat checks to plumbers and elcetricans. Next time you see Gestopoe Fenty ask him why did he cut the D.C. Fire and EMS Cadet program? Ahhh jobs that someone who doesn’t go to college could have for a lifetime.

@ Kristallnacht…Really? Did you see she was sentenced in 2004? Gray wasn’t in office and Fenty was on the Council.

@ 2ndblackwhitesupremacist..Uncle Ruckus is that you?

Well she step into the political fray so now she becomes fair game. Michelle Fenty has chosen to stay private as she indicated in the video. OK that’s all fine, but when a couple ascends to the level that Gestapo Fenty has it become harder to “not be involved”.

Concessions are often made on the wife’s roles and responsibilities. Even if it’s something as small as hey I’ll take on the role of reading to children in the class room once a month to show the citizens of the District of Columbia that I’m connected to them beyond attending A-list events (as one commenter pointed out).

Man she could have even set-up mentorships between her law-firm and young women who attend Anacostia High school. Showed what it takes to be a lawyer, mother and women and Tied it into Rhee’s “so called reform”. There are so many ways she could have played this hand, but she choose not to so….oh well.

But this again shows another elementary mistake by this administration. It also shows that the campaign people that surround Fenty are clueless and should have brought her out early not in the 4th quarter with 3 seconds left on the clock.

My initial reaction to her comments about “the polls “ and her Gestapo husband trailing Gray was that she must not have any real friends. Now maybe she hangs out with folks and has a diner or too but no real friends. Because a real friend would have clued her in aloooooooooooong time ago of the issues that residents have with her Husband. Then I begin wondering does she read a newspaper? Does she have any connection to the city beyond the enclave of the gold coast?

I'm cool with Michelle Fenty...Stand up for your man! Hey...If you think folks are misrepresenting your spouse, then you should defend them.

I will say some of the allegations against Fenty are pretty weak (and I voted for Cropp in 2006). For instance, the whole contracts thing with Skinner and Karim. I don't know Skinner, but I personally know Karim. He's a solid guy. Did he use his clout with the Mayor to help him get a deal? Likely...But how many folks doing buiness in the city dont? I really think they are picking on Karim, who is a small player in the market. Do you think the Abdo's the D&K, etc., don't have relationships that help them get deals?

Mrs. Fenty is not the first DC First Lady to be private. Anthony Williams' wife was basically invisible for all of his 8 years in office. That's why his mom was travelling around town and backing him up. In fact, though she has remained private,Mrs. Fenty has lent her name and presence to many charity events.

The tone of the comments here about Mrs. Fenty's defense of her husband reinforces the very nasty tone I have seen from the Gray campaign and its supporters. It has completely turned off this voter and many others I know. The Fenty campaign may ultimately thank you for your assistance.

I don't need to drink beer with these people. I don't care whose wife cried or not. I don't care if they are arrogant or nice. What I know is that Fenty is doing something about drastically changing the entire foundation and perception of the school system here in DC. And he gets my vote purely for that. And thank you for taking away that zoning for taxis.

Maybe Mrs Fenty's tears were of joy, knowing that the charade will be ending soon. Is there any truth that she is a battered wife? I can't believe she has been so busy that she is now just coming out to support her husband. Something is fishy about this.

What a performance. Top of the 9th and his wife decides to come to the aid of her hubby. Well there wont be any extra innings is this game. Mr Fenty you played the taxpayers of dc like a musical instrument. Now its time to pack up and move on. By the way dont forget to take your puppet Rhee with you. Tell Your frat brothers NO MORE CONTRACTS.

@RCDC “Mrs. Fenty is not the first DC First Lady to be private. Anthony Williams' wife was basically invisible for all of his 8 years in office. That's why his mom was travelling around town and backing him up.

You are correct, but the difference between Anthony Williams and Fenty is that Anthony wasn’t in trouble of losing his seat. His wife stayed out the situation, and Anthony at least showed a “family member” making a connection to the city.
“In fact, though she has remained private, Mrs. Fenty has lent her name and presence to many charity events.”

And that’s my point. Most charity events are attended by those who can afford to give and more then often these individuals are of a higher class. I’m surprised that you are surprised by these comments. She put herself out there and if she wanted to defend her man. Why wait until now? The criticisms of Fenty have been going on for a while now.

"I understand Fenty hasn't handled power wisely, so he is arogant and a bit childish....the fact is the city is moving in the righ direction. Fenty certainly has my vote!"
----
Wow...A private schooler impressed with Rhee because she's Asian. That has to be the only reason because she hasn't accomplish jack within the school system. She gets awesome press. Time Magazine, Dateline, Meet the Press, I mean I have never seen anything like it and it's all because SHE IS NOT AN AFRICAN AMERICAN. The message the Post always sends is that Black people are incompetent. I remember when Anthony Williams had a White guy in charge of snow removal and this dude got more press than Sarah Palin. They(WaPo)"The Master of Disaster". The WaPo should really stop being so bias. Any administrator who isn't Black get get press. The only Black administrator ever to get good press was Anthony Williams for the firing of 180 people. Oh...the WaPo love it. They didn't need the specifics they just knew some Black folks got fired and that's good enough for them. Same with Rhee. She uses firings as a way of getting good WaPo press. Nevermind that the firings don't make sense, nevermind Rhee has never been a Principal or Super. Nevermind the fact THAT TEST SCORES HAVE ACTUALLY GONE DOWN. They keep giving this woman prime time coverage for NOTHING!!! All she is doing is hiring Gay White men and women as a way of facilitating gentrification and attracting outsiders. The word is out. D.C. is hiring White people...Black male need not apply.

Disgraceful!!! Rhee has been a flop but she get unbelievable press. Go figure. It's as puzzling as Sarah Palin's following.

I read this article and watched the video 15 min. ago. And for the last 10 min. I have had tears in my eyes. Tears have just been streaming down my face because of what Michelle Fenty has said about Adrian Fenty. Michelle has proven to me that one can laugh so hard until your eyes fill with tears!

Kristallnacht said "go to the psychiatrist. Stop inflicting us with your misguided notions, You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Bullet Proof? What does that mean? What kind of role model are you? Sick F***!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Heart,
I'd suggest you start taking your own advice:
1) based on your posts, you may be the one who needs to "see a psychiatrist". Your parents pulled you out of DCPS - not anyone else. Your anger is misdirected. I am curious to know, however, what GREAT school held your heart captive as your parents ripped you away.
2) PLEASE stop attempting to inflict us (because it only works if the audience allows it) with your "misguided notions" - and allow me to say they are VERY misguided.
3) You should truly "be ashamed" for such foolishness and twisted, ill-conceived thoughts and ideas.
4) "What kind of role model are YOU" miss???!!! Such anger needs to be treated. Before you can help anyone else, you have to be in a much better place internally. I'm really worried at this point.
Bottom line: vote for Fenty for whatever your reason(s) - it's your constitutional right. You don't owe anyone an explanation for your decision, and nobody owes you one in return. Your attempts to change the minds of people on this blog have failed. There's really no time even left to convince people they should switch. Accept that what the Fenty Administration did to many families and the manner in which is was done was just as profound as your DCPS experience. I do NOT support Fenty anymore - and nothing will ever change that.
Are you serious? I had to watch the video SEVERAL TIMES, enhanced my viewing screen to at least see the swelling of tears in her eyes. You guessed it none! What is so shameful is that if Michelle Fenty really was concerned by the citizens of DC then she should have remained at home with her children and her job. I believe the only reason she was at the debate was because the "Fenty Handlers" urged him to have her there. Had Fenty really wanted to portray himself as a "mayor of the people" with family values and education, he would had her EVERYWHERE! He should have had Michelle Rhee crying on the sidelines. For her job! How could the Mayor of DC accept the support from the Mayor of New York City, who on August 13, 2010 had 200+ transit workers report to downtown Brooklyn, turn in their ID's uniforms and keys, FIRE THEM and only give them a BLANK UNEMPLOYMENT APPLICATION AND A 1 WEEK METRO PASS! Read it yourself. And Fenty wants you to believe he is for the people of DC? I caution the WP on-line readers and bloggers, ask for a 2 week free metro pass. You will need a week just to get off the floor!!
