White House, French Embassy denies report that Michelle Obama called her life "Hell"
The White House quickly slapped back Thursday at reports that first lady Michelle Obama said her life is "hell." The comment appears in a new French book, "Carla and the Ambitious," purportedly written with the cooperation of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
According to a British media report about the book, out Friday, Bruni-Sarkozy inquired about Obama's life as first lady during a private White House visit in March. The book quotes Obama as saying, "Don't ask! It's hell. I can't stand it!"
"The first lady never said that," said spokeswoman Katie McCormick Lelyveld, referring calls to the French Embassy. A spokesman there said Bruni-Sarkozy had distanced herself "completely" from the book, had not collaborated with the two authors and denied that the remark was made.
