Vanity Fair's Sarah Palin story; reactions across the web

Vanity Fair published another exhaustive profile of Sarah Palin Wednesday ... and caused yet another uproar in the blogosphere.

The article by Michael Joseph Gross contains few verifiable revelations -- Palin and people near her refused to talk, and those who did demanded anonymity -- and portrays the former Alaska governor as angry, manipulative and obsessed with money and fame. Plus: tensions in the Palin marriage, tensions with the McCain campaign, tensions with the RNC over the vice presidential candidate's infamous $150,000 designer wardrobe.

What to make of it all? Politico's Ben Smith questioned many of the anecdotes and concluded that "you can really write anything about Palin." The Alaska Dispatch online magazine found the media bubble around Palin newsworthy itself: "A reporter followed Palin around on a speaking tour through four Midwestern states with apparent back-stage access, wrote more than 10,500 words about his experience, and his story doesn't feature a single new comment from or interview with his subject ..... it's very unusual." The Christian Science Monitor summed it up best: "If you are trying to sell books or magazines or get clicks for your website, Republican Party star Sarah Palin is the gift that keeps giving."

This Michael Gross article is Yellow Journalism at its worst. I rate Gross as right down there at the bottom of the journalistic cesspool with Guy Cimbalo who wrote the Playboy article encouraging "hate rape" of conservative women.

Gross and Cimbalo, are icons of psychotic misogyny.

After her lies, manipulations, lack of accountability for what she tweets and posts on Facebpook (or is posted in her name,) she is becoming more and more irrelevant. She is not electable, and she is spiteful and unable to take criticism or even suggestions. It's Palin's way or no way. Not what we need in DC, for sure.

This byline of Roxanne Roberts and Amy Argetsinger, "share gossip from inside the Beltway and beyond" certainly sums up the Gross article.

I never cease to be amazed by how much Americans love fabricated tabloid gossip.

"Green Slave Girls From Orion Locked In Palin Pantry!"

Yes, ma'am, Americans sure enough love to gossip.

Does Sarah Palin want to refudiate Vanity Fair?

Posted by: HughBriss | September 2, 2010 3:11 AM | Report abuse

These damnable lies make me sick. Is Gross on the journolist? These socalled anonymous sources, come out and show your putrid faces. We all have tempers but throwing cans of corn at each other, nay, dropping f=bombs, she was offended when Schmidt did it around Piper. She ticked people off when she kicked the scum out of Alaska so she is going to have enemies, but this made up crap about a mother of five and a woman of faith is dispicable. Palin ranks #1 or #2 everyday on all search engines. So right now she is the most powerful woman in America and the left knows it

I don't want Gov. Palin as our next president, but these puerile attacks only strengthen her appeal for people that hate the press.
Are Liberals really willing to bet that 51% of Electoral Votes couldn't go to her just because conservatives and independents want to stick it to the press and elites.
Keep throwing gasoline on her story, see what happens.

How do we know it isn't true? Just sayin' I mean, O'Reilly is always lying-always-he says stuff that isn't true at all, and people prove it every day, yet republicans usually don't have a problem believing him. So why not believe Gross's article. You would think if it was a lie, Palin's lust for money and fame would lead her to sue him for slander, wouldn't it? If she does, I'll call him a liar, otherwise, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. And why not? Even 'good', mother of five, salt of the earth 'Americans' lie, don't they? Well, maybe not Sarah.

Who is the real Sarah Palin? If this is the best America has to offer, God save us all!!

Posted by: dbford1 | September 2, 2010 8:00 AM | Report abuse

Typical liberal smear. Libs are so amazing, always accusing people of lying yet NEVER have one iota of proof. We have a President who lies every time he speaks, we had the grifter couple who lied constantly yet it is good, decent Christian people like Sarah who are accused of lying. Liberals are just in another meltdown over this lovely woman, as they should be. She has more courage and integrity than they could even imagine.

Michael Misogynist Gross discusses Sarah's choice in bra style and discusses her breasts.

I would like to discuss with readers here, the pros and cons of Sarah's choice in bra style and I would especially like to discuss with readers, Sarah's breasts.

Sarah's bras and breasts are issues of critical importance to Americans. We do need to discuss her bras and breasts.

Upon exhaustive discussion of Sarah's bras and breasts, I would like to discuss with readers, Sarah's panties and contents therein.

In fairness to left liberals, who raise these important issues of Sarah's bras, breasts, panties and associated content, upon completion of in-depth discussion of Sarah's privates, I would like to discuss with readers if Barack Obama wears boxer shorts, briefs or diapers.

More important to Americans, I would like to discuss who changes Obama's dirty diapers for him. Would this be Rahm Emanuel or Hillary Clinton?

I watched this hatchet gossip loser on MSNBC this morning, and he tried to say, "I went into this on her side, we have a lot in common, I'm a Christian" what a bunch of crap. Is that the way a Christian is suppose to be? Assassinate with your pen? Funny how all he had was anonymous hearsay, because there would be retaliation, by whom? Sarah? What power does she hold to retaliate? People like Gross make me wanna puke, this country has too many of these media freaks.

She sets the standard for trailer park trash. Redneck, racist, demonic, and as dense as a door knob.

At least the R.S. guy could identify actual sources, unlike Mr. Gross and his imaginary "anonymous" sources... The author of your article hit the nail on the head with the line; "The article by Michael Joseph Gross contains few verifiable revelations..." Well put!

I saw Mr. Gross on CNN this morning. I can't believe that these networks would give this guy the time of day (oh, that's right, most of these networks give anyone who bashes conservatives time to spew their hate).
He did say that he identifies with Ms. Palin and went into this sympathizing with her. Bull...
This is another hatchet job by a left wing publication and "journalist". How much time has Mr. Gross spent following Bill or HIllary Clinton around and getting unnamed sources to talk about them? How much time, before the 2008 election, did Mr. Gross spend trailing Barack Obama and getting unnamed sources to dish on him? Did Mr. Gross spend any time digging into Mr. Obama's past such as his schooling, who paid for the private, exclusive schools he attended, his acquaintances, his time in Indonesia?
Mr. Gross also said that Ms. Palin has a cult of celebrity around her which draws big crowds. Isn't that exactly what we saw with Barack Obama?
I'm sure Mr. Gross will be on all the talk shows tonight on MSNBC to spew more of his unsubstantiated tripe.

I am an English professor of over twenty years. I am published, no New York Times best seller, yet, but some of my stories are popular sellers. I enjoy a lot of inside connections within my writers' world.

Yesterday, I telephone a girlfriend over at Vanity Fair. We exchange pleasant greetings, swap lies for a bit. I am truthful, advise her I am looking for information on Michael Gross, author of this latest Palin hit piece.

There is excitement in her voice but she cautions me, "Taha, you must guarantee I will remain anonymous." No problem, this works for Michael Gross, and this works for me, "Sure, darling, I will keep your secret right to my very grave."

She knows I am a red skinned girl, knows I am a traditional American Indian truth speaker. My girlfriend trusts me.

"Taha, a couple of women around the office here told me Michael Gross'," she pauses to search for a polite word, "they told me his virility is of insufficient size."

To be sure I understand correctly, I ask, "His penis is small?" No hesitation, she informs me, "No, his penis is tiny."

We chat a while longer, she adds, "One of those women told me Gross takes two or three Viagra before, well, you know. She says Viagra doesn't help him, not one bit. Michael Gross suffers serious erectile dysfunction, he is impotent."

Usually I provide sources and names so readers can independently verify what I report. However, this is a rare instance when I promised anonymity to my source of information. Nonetheless, what I report to you readers, is true.

Poor Michael Gross, he is so confused. This boy directs hatred at women because of his own personal problem. This, of course, constantly prompts Michael to prove how very small of a man is he.

I figure if Gross can discuss Sarah's breasts, we can discuss his penis, and he does prove himself to be just such, a penis, an insignificant penis.

The Vanity Fair article confirms the gut feeling I've had about Sarah Palin when she inflicted herself on the lower 48 during the 2008 presidential campaign.

She flames the main stream media through Tweets and Facebook entries. All of which is probably done in her name, as she's never proven capable of constructing a coherent sentence in person.

The nonsense she is doing will come to an end when the main stream media stops reporting on what is posted in her name on Facebook and Twitter.

Posted by: SonyainTX | September 2, 2010 5:32 PM | Report abuse

Why doesn't Sarah just sue "Vanity Fair" and the author for libel? She could start another PAC just for that purpose, assuming she doesn't want to spend any of her nouveau riche fortune on it.

Oh wait, it's because the truth is a complete defense against defamation charges, so Sarah would lose.

I have lived in Wasilla for 3 years I thought that it would be forever. What you see is not what you get. I do not know Mrs. Palin but the town and state she ran are not Conservative. This state is the biggest welfare and Federal money pit there is. I think it would be a great idea to have a good reporter come and do an article about this place and the Palins and there adult children and set the facts straight. What you see in a sound clip is not the real thing. Our country is in trouble and people need to know who these public people are and what they really stand for. I am an Independent that is very conservative. This is not an I hate Republicans thing. I fear for my future. The lack of experience in our leaders is frightening.

Oh yes, Sarah's *such a good Christian*. I'm afraid I've come across very few folks who proclaim to be Christians who are adherents to the principles of the faith.

"What power does she hold to retaliate?"

Honey, your average worker's employer has plenty of "power" to retaliate. One minute her adherents want us to think she's the most powerful woman (a/k/a pitbull or, now, "mama Grizzly") in the country, and next a clawless kitten that couldn't hurt a fly. Pick one and stick with it. :)

We need more thoughtful citizens like you, no matter what your party affiliation.

Posted by: Gingersprite | September 2, 2010 7:19 PM | Report abuse

Gingersprite is gracious, "Ms. Taha, you are intelligent and (bitingly) hilarious...."

Thank you! My bloated ego just exploded!

My commentary is clearly a spoof on Michael Gross making use of anonymous sources for his alleged facts. I have issues with this tactic.

My practice is to provide cited sources so readers and others can double check, verify or simply learn more. Truth is very critical to me, speaking truth is a traditional trait within my culture.

To me, this does not matter if Vanity Fair attacked Barack Obama or attacked Sarah Palin, I would object to either being attacked while cited sources are simply anonymous. We, none of us, have a way of verifying Gross is being truthful, nor can we verify his anonymous sources are being truthful.

I am a professional writer. People like Michael Gross give my profession a black eye; he ruins our credibility. This angers me, this offends me.

More offensive, though, is Michael Gross arrogantly assuming, "Americans are such ignorant gullible gits they will believe anything I write."

Michael Gross is not a talented writer, he is simply a tabloid rumor monger earning a living by lying to America and our world.

Thank you for your kind words.

It's all this poor woman has - and she know it. She's DONE in politics - as a candidate for anything, and doing all she can to just stay in the spotlight.
Like ALL REPUBLICANS she lies about things that can EASILY be verified as untrue. It just THE MOMENT that counts.

WHAT are you talking about? she goes around "endorsing" candidates as if she should have any role whatsoever in politics today. and the sad thing is, you conservatives think she does! how is that possible? yes, she was in an election a couple years ago. but she couldn't even finish out a post she was elected for so she could what? write a book and appear with all those right-winged talking heads on fox news, go to oscar gifting suites, post of facebook, and now attend dancing with the stars to watch her equally fame obsessed teenage daughter along with some of the most ridiculous reality stars you can find today? really? and you people call her dignified and courageous? the definitions are lost on you. if you want to support a republican, at least choose someone who has, oh I don't know, a job? I completely disagree with gross's way of journalism. it's quite sad he had to stoop to that level. but you defining ms. sarah palin as courageous, dignified, and the "star of the republican party" makes your party look more and more unglued. yikes.

Amongst the most critical aspects of journalism is integrity, and integrity is based upon truth, independently verifiable truth. An icon of journalistic integrity is Walter Cronkite. When Walter died, so did journalistic integrity.

A reputable journalist will always cite sources for quotes. We see this throughout news releases. A person is quoted and a source, including name, place and date, is included. This affords readers an ability to independently verify if a quote or cited material is factual and true. Integrity is the touchstone of journalism. Integrity of truth is never to be violated.

Citing anonymous sources is not in keeping with journalistic integrity; quotes and cited materials cannot be independently verified, least not easily. Within our journalism world, citing anonymous sources is considered hearsay and rumor. Michael Gross provides only anonymous sources for his cited quotes and material. Gross has no integrity. Already his Palin hit piece is falling apart, is being shown to be deceit, by independent research. Gross is already caught lying.

Baffles me left liberals treat this deceit by Gross as gospel truth. This baffles me left liberals have no interest in verifying what Gross writes is truth. What does not baffle me is left liberals will propagate known deceit while this fits with a left liberal political agenda.

Gross is shown to lack journalistic integrity and shown to be practicing deceit. Left liberals are also shown to lack integrity and to be practicing deceit through their parroting lies written by Gross. This never baffles me.

This does seem left liberals view truth as a nemesis to be defeated.

1. why it took two years to write the article (Do NOT tell us he was checking his sources.)
2. how a college dropout with an extremely thin resume can get an assignment like this from a leading national magazine (Tells us a lot about personnel standards at Vanity Fair.)
3. how much came from Levi Johnston ("frequent house guest") whom Gross enabled to extend his 15 minutes of fame

Here is PROOF that Sarah Palin lied to us: that she did not give birth to Trig in mid April.

http://js-kit.com/blob/999FrDTogM7FssOVczj1T5.jpg

You can see in these well-documented photos that she has a very flat profile just weeks and days before her supposed delivery of Trig. And a huge belly all of a sudden -- obviously fake, because she had NO belly only one month before.

You can't have a flat stomach one day and say you are 8 months pregnant the next -- unless you lie.
