Lovelorn libertarian lashes out at wonk ex-girlfriend at panel discussion while C-SPAN cameras roll (VIDEO)

When right goes wrong: Conservative/Libertarian blogger Todd Seavey and National Review editor Helen Rittelmeyer aired some very personal laundry during a panel discussion that aired on C-SPAN2's BookTV Saturday night. The two were clashing over political ideology until Seavey unexpectedly veered off-course: Rittelmeyer, he announced, was his girlfriend for a tumultuous two years and ..... by the way, an expert at brutal gamesmanship. Like, say, juggling multiple men or coldly playing matchmaker for one couple so she could seduce the man and hurt the woman. Or so he claimed. "When you think about, it is pretty creepy," he told the audience. "What sort of evils are beyond the pale?"

"What do I think is off-bounds? I don't know? Spilling your heart out on C-SPAN?" she shot back.

Suffice to say the room got very quiet. Really, really awkward.

Seavey appears unapologetic about the exchange, which was taped two weeks ago at Georgetown University. "Her often brutal-sounding philosophy really is, when you dig through the layers, a brutal philosophy, genuinely aimed at hurting people," he blogged Saturday. "But who thinks people are being serious when they praise cruelty, especially if people are about 5'4" and look like harmless librarians?"

Rittelmeyer, for the moment, isn't hitting back. "I'm afraid I don't have anything more to say on the topic," she told us.

I can't believe they are both single!

Wow.

That's cold-blooded. That exchange makes him look small, but he must have waited a long time to deliver a shot like that. And because C-SPAN archives all its materials, it will be on file forever.

Payback is a mutha!

Hey, guy, I sympathize, I really do, but man-o-man, she really ain't worth it! We can all see that, you know? A nice red dress, I guess, but jeez-louise, she really really ain't worth the trouble! Have some standards, guy, and "man up", as you conervatives say.

Oh snap!

Why would anyone believe Mr. Seavey? By attacking her publicly he is safe because -- IMHO -- he knows she can't call him on his words because that would not be appropriate.

"That exchange makes him look small"

I disagree, that was one of the most elegant pieces of revenge I have ever seen. If half the things Seavey said about Rittelmeyer's character are true, he beat her at her own game and exacted full payback for two years of hell in two minutes. And it wasn't even gratuitous. He actually managed to fit it into the theme of the discussion.

Revenge is a dish that is best when served cold. "Seavey's Revenge" deserves a place in the history books, or at least on Letterman's Top Ten list!

Conservative women are scheming ***holes, just like the men--who knew?

Some of the remarks she makes before he lashes out (such as suffering due to lack of medical care building character) confirm what he says about her. It seems like what you see is what you get with her. Awful.

Roxy and Amy make me laugh. It's common knowledge in D.C. Conservative and Libertarian circles that Helen Rittelmeyer would waterboard small Arab or Latino children if given the chance.

Rittelmeyer has been known to express such personal desires at numerous parties and public events. Everyone just rolls their eyes and shrugs with a "That's Helen" or two for good measure.

In D.C. and Georgetown, the only two women with more savage personal reputations than Rittelmeyer are the first runner-up, Jonah Goldberg's wife, Jessica Gavora, and the undisputed Queen of Mean:

The one...and thankfully the only...

Lucianne Goldberg, Jonah's mama.

What a lovely couple, and how classy they both are! They deserve each other. The makeup sex should be about as fabulous as it can be for a pair of drips.

Man, that guy is pathetic.

To rant on your ex-girlfriend in front of a live audience on CSPAN is really hitting below the belt.

After all, if the girl is that bad, why did he date her for two years?

One thing is clear. Nobody should be confiding in him, as he has no sense of propriety whatsoever.

I'm sure his lack of values will be reflected in diminishing CSPAN opportunities. And dates.
