D.C.'s Don Geronimo, on comeback trail in Sacramento, suffers serious stage fall during radio live show

Don Geronimo in 2008. (Michael Temchine for The Washington Post)

It looked like a pretty nice comeback for Don Geronimo. The self-proclaimed "radio god" -- a giant of the D.C. airwaves for more than 30 years before his abrupt 2008 retirement -- got a new gig this summer in Sacramento, where on Friday night he drew 2,000 fans to a live appearance.

And then, at the end of his show, he unexpectedly fell off the stage -- and landed on his head.

Geronimo, 52, was recovering Monday night in a trauma unit at the University of California-Davis Medical Center after having spent the first part of the weekend in intensive care. Steve Cottingim, the general manager for CBS-owned sports talk radio station KHTK, told us that Geronimo slipped on the Cal Expo stage and took a header on the pavement below, a roughly five-foot drop.

But "he's doing great," relatively speaking, Cottingim said. "He's clearheaded, he's walking, he's doing much better."

It's been a tumultuous couple of years for the radio jock born Mike Sorce. In 2005, his wife Freda was killed in a car accident. A period of soul-searching followed, and in 2008, he decided to walk away from "The Don and Mike Show," his nationally syndicated program with Mike O'Meara based at D.C.'s WJFK-FM, telling The Post he was ready to become a "beach bum." Only months later, though, he resurfaced first at one small Ocean City-area station, then another, before retiring again.

In the meantime, he remarried early last year, to Janet, "the brightest light in my life" -- like him a football fan, unlike him a Republican, he wrote on his blog. In June he took the job in Sacramento, where he already had a fan base from his syndication years (Cottingim said it was "his best market"). Why? "After a much needed self-imposed walk away from big-time radio, even as I healed old wounds and started a new life with a better outlook in general, I found something lacking," Geronimo blogged recently: "Being on the radio ... I was still totally addicted to being on the air."

Hey Jan "the Lottery" Sorce, you're no Freda and you're 'no bright light in long-time listeners ears'

Join the movement to launch soon. Contact CBS Radio management & KHTK General Manager Steve Cottingham demanding that Jan stay off the air.

FYI, Freda pushed Don off the stage.

With a prior drug history, time for The Washington Post to subpoena Sorce's medical / toxicology records to see if he was under the influence as he face-planted off the 2 foot stage.

Read this on DCRTV today. Sacramento media quote about Mike Sorce header "Geronimo was undergoing tests at the hospital, and sources described him as lucid and clear-headed."

C'mon, dude's made so many bad professional & personal decisions, lucid & clear-headed he is NOT

"Being on the radio ... I was still totally addicted to being on the air."

Hey pal, considering you just pulled a Humpty-Dumpty, maybe the word "addicted" is not a good choice of words.

Hey Geronimo, NOBODY chooses to move to Sacramento unless that's the only place where your old tired act and toxic self is wanted.

As O'Meara and Cerphe are embraced in their new gigs, don't let the DC door hit your ass on the way out of town. AHHHHH

Team O'Meara. Team Spewak. Team Elston

Did Sorce buy a home in Sacramento as he is telling his listeners or did he just lease?

Wow yournofreda, You are a nasty, bitter, B-word! What's the matter honey? Don didn't marry you? Well clearly I can understand why. You're a horrible person. And I'd bet your crotch is rotting. Don is an entertainer and anyone who listened to the morning zoo is bound to have fond memories. Get well Don. I represent your fan base not YNF.

Or maybe you two should hook up with each other and b*&^% about people who get hurt. BTW morons, getting caught with a joint in your car is not the same thing as having a drug problem. Take a look at your own faults and stay out of other people's frau?

WaPo readers, join me will you, in this episode of Jesus Radio Talk where we ask the question Brother Geronimo::Free Will, Free Fall or Fall From God's Grace.' Recently, as she attended to her husband's medical needs, Janet Sorce, channeled her all-knowing holy-roller Christian side with such quotes as " God had a plan that night." The fact that he didn't die is a miracle," "listeners all over the country lifted him up in prayer." Spiritual memo of clarification to the congregation. One, if God did have a plan for Mike Sorce that night then it was with black-cloud Karma support, perfectly executed by her [in my perfect fantasy, God looks like Jenny McCarthy]. Or, was Sorce's fall from the stage free will? That top-heavy fat man may have just fallen over. Second, dj Donny mess-up again wasn't close to death, except if you consider the crowd 'dying in laughter' thinking at first, his fall was a stunt. Third, how Christian convenient of you to think that at your time of need, Geronimo was 'lifted up in prayer.' The only lifting up of Sorce these past few days have been by paramedics & orderlies who have strained their backs trying to life him up onto a gurney, roll him over for sponge bath, or attend to a bed sore. Finally, since he has burnt so many personal and professional bridges in his life, could it be God doesn't like Sorce? For as it says in Donny 3:16 "For God so loved the radio world, he made sure the bad ones fall off a stage." Amen. Now lets go have some snacks! AAHHHHHHH

Jan's a Lottery winner; winner, winner shake n' bake chicken dinner. Donny "desperate for companionship" Geronimo. Pretty messed up huh Bsrt. Poor kid

Hey Mike Sorce, you have no problem turning over your medical records from the accident to the media? Dave Hughes? You know, make sure you were not intoxicated nor impaired? AHHHHH THANKS!

Hey Pal, you know why you didn't skin your knees during your fall? Because you were wearing the same knee pads you used to crawl back to CBS Radio on.

You're the only dj run out of DC

yournofreda regardless of what you think about Don's move to Suckramento or his new marriage, your comments are totally out of line and you sir are a lowlife, forum troll, scumbag. Your comments show you are nothing more than a immature, bratty little kid whose parents let him have access to the computer for a night. Grow up.

Yournofreda - you can't even spell "you're" correctly. Who are you to judge anyone and say such awful things? YOU'RE so bitter and evil. If YOU'RE not a fan then don't listen to Don and don't read articles about him. If you don't like his wife, NO ONE CARES! YOU'RE a seriously disturbed individual and clearly jealous of Don and Janet. Get over it. YOU'RE scum.
