Confidential document reveals details of Gilbert Arenas and Laura Govan's life together

By The Reliable Source

The on-again, off-again relationship between former Wizards star Gilbert Arenas and his girlfriend Laura Govan looks like it's off for good -- and a document obtained by the Reliable Source offers a window into their life together and what could be a stupendously expensive court battle.

In confidential notes, Govan -- who is expecting her fourth child with Arenas -- describes fights where he repeatedly threw her out of the house, his profligate spending (including a shark tank/pool/grotto complex said to cost $1 million), lavish vacations and spending sprees at toy stores.

And yet they never had a nanny, Govan complains, according to the notes: "he would state 'you had them you watch them.' "

Their nine years together came to an end in November, shortly before Arenas was traded to the Orlando Magic and moved to Florida; Govan last month claimed through a rep that he had abandoned her and the kids, cutting off all communications and support.

That might have been the end of the public drama. But then Govan contacted Trope and Trope, a high-profile family law firm in Los Angeles, and met with an attorney from the firm. Somehow, nine pages of typewritten notes from their meeting ended up in the midst of a court filing in another, unrelated case handled by the firm. All the pages were filed in a public docket in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Trope and Trope did not return calls for comment. According to a court order allowing the firm to remove the notes from public record because they contained "confidential attorney-client privileged communications," the firm "inadvertently copied and submitted" them due to a "clerical error."

A representative for Govan said she declined to comment on the public disclosure of the document or their contents.

But the notes -- which appear to be her version of their life together -- reveal lots of details about their relationship. Arenas, 29, and Govan, 31, first met in 2002, when she was coaching basketball at a Golden State Warriors camp. In addition to their three young children (the fourth is due in June), they went through other pregnancies that ended in miscarriages. Along the way, there were lots of break-ups and make-ups.

Some of the meeting notes confirm what Arenas himself shared on his popular, now-defunct blog: "I've done kicked her out of my house almost every weekend, yet she's still here and she still believes in me," he wrote in 2008 in a post describing his marriage proposal to her. The notes tell an almost identical story: "The reason he proposed to her is that he put her out of the house every other weekend since they met and she stays with him, so something must be working."

There's a lot about how Arenas spent his money, based on her understanding of the household finances: "he states he makes 1.5 million per month," read the notes. Arenas lavished plenty on their Great Falls home, dropping $100,000 on landscaping, $5,000 a month for housekeepers, $675 "per car" washing, and $1 million for his backyard pool and grotto. His sharks are expensive: $5,000 a month to feed them and $1,500 for a keeper to drive from Columbus to take care of them.

He was extravagant when it came to toys for the children -- ages 5, 4 and 2 -- buying a $60,000 train set and an $8,000 toy Mercedes-Benz electric car, and dropping between $30,000 and $40,000 during a shopping spree at FAO Schwartz. (Arenas also told this story on the blog, but didn't divulge the amount of money spent.)

The notes say Arenas gave Govan $8,000 a month for expenses; more than half went to pay the mortgage on a home she owns in California, and the rest went for groceries ($500-$600 a week from Peapod), doctors, classes and other expenses for the children.

Arenas's business manager, Los Angeles-based CPA to the stars Lester Knispel, is mentioned twice. Contacted by the Post, Knispel's office declined to discuss his client's expenditures and referred calls to Arenas's manager.

The end -- and it appears this time it's for real -- came on the day before Thanksgiving, when she threw him out of the house, according to the notes. Govan and the children left Great Falls less than two weeks ago and are now in California.

All signs point to a messy split.

David Cornwell, an attorney for Arenas, said in a statement that the notes contain "numerous inaccuracies and inflammatory statements by a disgruntled and vindictive woman." He declined to address any specific inaccuracies in the document, saying, "we will not dignify it by responding to Laura Govan's false and fanciful assertions. Rest assured, however, that Gilbert Arenas remains committed to providing his children with boundless love and support."

Children dying of starvation around the world, and he's buying $8,000 toy cars and paying $5,000/month to feed some ####ing sharks. What a hero.

While we spent/spend ridiculous amounts of money to cheer him on. But hey, as long as we're entertained.

What a very stupid posting when there's many people with that kind of money spending it far worse. He could be at a strip club "making it rain". Gilbert is way too immature to know the value of for what he is spending. They're probably people or advisors but can they really make him be more responsable spending HIS money? If you were 25 with $100+ million, can you honestly say you wouldn't have "questionable" purchases?

Well, that's one way to get the info to the public and embarrass Gil. How often does something like this happen? I'm guessing never.

How many women fall for these type of guys. While I blame GA for his immaturity, etc, the woman has to take much of the blame also.

Let's all pray for the children. They will be hurt more than anyone because they have had to live through all of this mess.

Hopefully they both will wake up and do what is best for the kids.

If Gil cut her off, maybe she could Shaq to take care of her since they have a thing for each other.

@spunkydawg1, please get a clue...before you come on here talking about starving children consider the source. As Arenas' attorney stated and as anyone that has followed Arenas' career can tell you Ms. Govan is not necessarily the most reliable source. Secondly, please go read about all of the community service/good acts Gilbert has done and continues to perform. That would include Scores for Schools. I can see that youre jealous of his life, but please get a clue before you comment.

"...profligate spending..." Why else do you think that NBA groupies are waiting in the visiting team's hotel lobbies at 3AM for their arrival -- for autographs ?

a $1m house and almost $34,00 a year on groceries (from giant not even whole foods and not including beer/wine/liquor)?

Really So he spent thousands of dollars on his kids, If I had his money I would spend on my kids too. If he wasn't spending money on his kids then somebody would be complaining about that

a few questions...if this woman lives in a 1 mil home with house keepers, gardeners, shark tank keepers and pool/grotto cleaners with no job of her own why in the heck would she need a nanny? Also, if Gil allows her to live in this house rent free why should he also be paying her mortgage for a house in cali? What the heck is this woman eating that requires $500-600 a month in groceries?

Well, THAT'S a great justification: As long as there are people doing even worse than you are, you're OK.

So sad that we'll never know, but yeah, even at 25, I'm pretty sure I'd have found a better use for $5,000 EVERY MONTH than for sharks.

When the Wizards played against the Lakers in LA back on Dec 7th. Laura and her sister Gloria were sitting courtside beside the media table. She must have passed a note to the CSN announcers to let everyone know who she was. Because clearly they said she was the mother and girlfriend to Gilbert. So with that being said she was still claiming him.

Also I do know that Laura's older brother Jaime was staying at the house since July.

I am not a big Gilbert fan, but she "complained" about not having Nannies??? I guess with all the house keepers doing the house work, she was too busy ummmm doing ahhhhhh, yeah not sure why she needed a nanny...oh thats right, she is a lazy piece of dirt, just like Gil :) congrats Gil, see you at bankruptcy court in a couple of years.

You're right that I don't know about all of his acts of kindness. I nevertheless find it hard to believe that he's "giving till it hurts" or anywhere close when he's wasting $5,000/month on some freaking sharks. He should be ashamed.

Posted by: spunkydawg1 | January 27, 2011 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Hey spunkydawg: when you're bringing home $1.5 million per month, feel free to spend it on anything you want. Until then, try not to be such a player hater.

Fact is, Gil was known to be a pretty generous guy with his money and his time--personally buying and distributing supplies to Hurricane Katrina victims, giving away shoes and jerseys at games, etc.

So if Gil likes sharks, I don't really see a problem with him spending less than 1% of his monthly income on keeping his pet of choice. It's his money and his life, not yours.

Amazing. This is news because a bunch of presumably otherwise intelligent people are so shallow they won't make the world a better place themselves, but will bore us to death with how they would make the world a better place by commenting on people they don't know, never knew, and have a snowballs chance of ever meeting. The banality of the internet is truly on display.

So she got an 8k a month allowance. Had a House keeper, the groceries delievered and was complaining that she didn't have a nanny. Too bad there isn't a jersey chaser clause in this country. C's like Govan make me want to attempt human flight off the washington monument.
This woman has done nothing but spread hips and crap out kids. And yet she's entitled to more.

Hey if I made money like Gil I would have fun too, she is pissed because she's not getting what she wants, but heck with 4 babies by him she will always be paid. She needs to sit down and collect because that is all she has been doing so far. Girl, play ur game but keep it cleaner than what u doing now. U know u only around him and dropping babies because of the money. Stop faking like u care !!!

@spunkydawg1 Again, get a clue...just because you dont agree with him spending $5000/month on sharks doesnt mean he shouldnt do so if thats how he chooses to spend his money. If he has an interest in raising sharks and thats the cost of caring for them then thats what hes going to pay. If he wasnt paying $5000/month on sharks we may have another person out of work and you would be boo hoo'ing about unemployment numbers. Why is it up to Gilbert Arenas or any other millionaire to give until it hurts or anywhere close to it? He also donated $100 for every point he scored at home games (with Abe Polin matching)...a little math for you, he avg 29 points/game in '06...41 home games per year, says he donated $100,000+ to improving area schools that year...WHAT A MONSTER!!!

Okay, so you pop out 4 kids with a man who doesn't marry you and keeps kicking you out, and you live in what most folks would consider opulent circumstances with housekeepers. And you want us to see you as a victim because you don't have a nanny? That's right, you had 'em, you watch 'em. This behavior is just reinforcing views of the black culture of baby mamas and bitching about no father figures for your kids.

There's some sports reporter who gives NBA player's nicknames, like 9 for 8--9 babies by 8 women.

Too bad for the kids, but for the 2 supposed adults, the heck with them. Govan: You aren't a victim after the second child with no wedding ring.

Spunkydawg as others on here have stated you sound rediculous and a wee bit jealous. If a man is taking home $1.5 million dollars a month taking care of his kids etc what business is it of yours if he spends $5000 on sharks? Heck as long as he is taking care of his responsibilities if he wanted to use $5000 worth of ones as toilet paper it really would be none of my business.

Now will if I made that type of money would I spend $5000 on sharks? No but then again that's not my thing. Don't worry about how someone else spends their money and worry about the things you can control.

What's wrong with this picture ? First he earned this money, "NO MATTER" how much he gets paid to play a child's game. "STOP HATING THE PLAYER". Just think for a moment how much the "OWNERS" are "MAKING" off of him. Secondly, No matter if he spends to much money on his kids for toys or whatever, IT"S STILL HIS D@M MONEY !! If he's giving her $8000 a month for expense, that's close to $96,000 a year. It's her problem if she spending half of that for a house in California I guess for years thats she's hasn't been living in. MOst of you would DIE for a chance to live like this !!GET REAL !! IT"S HIS MONEY !!!!!!!!!

Gil has done enough so that he can earn enough so he can do what? pay for sharks?

What have you done? Just because you can relate to it doesn't mean you don't have no "waste" in your life.

What "waste" do you have?

What the hell is Laura thinking??? If he didn't marry u after the first kid what makes her think having a baby after baby is going to make him act right lead alone marry u. She is jus as STUPID as her naive sister Gloria......in DENIAL. All u see is $$$ in her eyes. In the mean time u bring these innocent kids in ur world. And now on the 4th kid n still not married. So GA is right u don't need a nanny. You chose to have them......thinking he will change. Karma is a BITCH huh? Maybe u will think about that when u screw someone else's husband.

Based on Gilbert's twitter admissions, "thru her out the house every weekend, yet she's still here for me", sounds like he has a twisted since of himself. Only thinks of himself, not of others. Shark tanks, spending sprees at FAO Schwarz, show a very immature individual. I think his mother abadoning him, has caused him serious and severe emotional difficulties and led him to have a disrespect for all women, particular the mother of his children. It seems they never had a REAL RELATIONSHIP built on LOVE, ADMIRATION and TRUST. She trapped him by getting pregant, had to chase him around the country to get him served for child support, and in the end Arenas works out a child support/settlement with GOVAN'S FATHER! Shows me he didn't see her as a REAL WOMAN or just didn't have respect for WOMEN so let me talk to her daddy instead.

Arenas just seems to have so many demons; he held a deep resentment for his mom up to and through her death. He didn't even realize until a month after her death that she had in fact passed. He has half-brothers and sisters he fails to acknowledge because his sick stupid ass thinks everyone is after him because of his money. In the meantime he throws it away on stupid crap, seeking fulfillment, but gets none. Laura Govan was stupid for having multiple babies with this sorry excuse for a man. No wonder she was kicking it with Shaq!!!
