Chris Lee scandal: Yesha Callahan, the woman who met him on Craigslist, tells her story

By The Reliable Source

Then-Rep. Chris Lee at a 2009 Chamber of Commerce meeting in Amherst, N.Y. (Derek Gee) See a gallery of political scandals

The woman at the center of the Rep. Chris Lee resignation story said she's shocked at how a casual online flirtation exploded into a national scandal.

"I didn't do this for the attention or, you know, notoriety or money or whatever," a stunned Yesha Callahan told our colleague Lonnae O'Neal Parker. "Now I just want to go about my daily business."

Callahan, 34, said she wrestled for weeks about what to do with the e-mails she swapped on Craigslist with Lee last month. He'd told her he was a 39-year-old divorced lobbyist with a son; she traced his e-mail address to his Facebook page, then discovered he was, in fact, a married, 46-year-old politician. Who does that? she wondered.

A faculty specialist for the University of Maryland and single mother of a preteen son, Callahan hashed over the e-mails with her social circle of young professionals. Lee's deception was out of bounds, her friends agreed, and Callahan began to see this as a cautionary tale.

"I assumed that other people have probably come across him as well, and he had lied to them," she said. "I felt annoyance at just the audacity of people thinking that they're not going to get found out when they are lying."

Callahan said she stopped corresponding with Lee after about 10 e-mails -- when he asked her to send a racy photo. (He'd already sent her the now-infamous shirtless photo of himself.) "I was kind of like, okay, no, he's just looking for things I'm not interested in."

Her friends encouraged Callahan to go public.

"I've known about it for several weeks because she's been trying to decide what to do for a while," said blogger Danielle Belton. Belton knows Callahan socially, was in on the deliberations. "We were all like, 'Come on!' She probably would not have done anything with it. She is not someone who wants that kind of media attention."

At a friend's suggestion, Callahan reached out to Maureen O'Connor at the gossip Web site Gawker, which guaranteed her anonymity. After the story appeared and the New York representative resigned, Belton interviewed Callahan anonymously about what happened for the Web site TheLoop21.com.

When contacted by the Post, Callahan said she's reeling from the intense interest in the story, noting with dismay that people were already trying find information about her. She expected -- maybe unrealistically -- to remain unidentified, and is now worried about the impact on her family, career and personal life.

"I have no problems finding dates elsewhere," she said. "At that moment, I was online looking and it was just something to do." And no -- she won't be found on Craigslist anytime soon. "I guess it soured me a bit," she says.

The fallout on Capitol Hill was about what you'd expect: House Speaker John Boehner said Lee made "the right decision" but declined to say if he advised him to resign. Boehner also dodged questions about a Roll Call report last summer saying he had warned Lee and other GOP members to stop socializing with female lobbyists. (On Thursday, spokesmen for three of the other members denied having such a conversation with Boehner.)

Up next: the special election to fill Lee's seat. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo hasn't set a date, reports the Post's David Fahrenthold, but sources said Democratic insiders had approached deputy White House press secretary Bill Burton, a native of western New York, about running.

I think if he had had a long-term affair with another women, then he might resign. But over a legal picture? There must be a lot more to this story than we know about.

Very unfortunate "journalism" - we don't get to see the email correspondence, specifically what Callahan wrote Lee to entice him into sending the photos. Furthermore, while it may have been inappropriate for Lee to misrepresent himself to a stranger, it surely doesn't warrant him being placed alongside the disgraced Eliot Spitzer. Lee ought to have admitted he was wrong and moved on, not committed career suicide.

If I were Yesha's bosses at UMd I'd sure be wondering what kind of judgment and decisions she's making outside work. With all the adverse publicity about Craigslist you'd think she'd have, for example, gone to a church bazaar to find a man. In fact, she could have gone on the cable show Baggage and it would have been a more upscale approach to dating. Yesha, hold your head in shame.

Any Congressman who represents himself as something he is not trumps anything any victim of his scams might say or do.

He occupies a position of public trust. He shows absence of judgement, but has a say in whatever affects us.

it is proper that he has resigned... what she might have said to him is irrelevant... he is the public servant run amuck.

WoW. A single mother with a preteen son goes on craiglist to find a strange man, who just might like young boys, what was she thinking? And she had the nerve to complain he lied about his age and his profession. She lacked judgement to allow her name to be made public, now her son's friends will know his mother went to a site where a man raped, killed females in New York, went to prison and killed himself. The child protection agency should question her judgement and her director at Univ of Md, should consider whether she should keep her job. Her judgement is way off and her friends who advised to go public instead advising her to try to find a man at a safe place. What a shame on both she and the Cong. Lee to do such seedy stuff. He needs plenty of counselling, and real soon, an embrassment to his family and his constituents. Blame it on alcohol and the New York Ice Tea Party.

It is interesting to note that disgraced congressman Chris Lee voted against repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell. Chris Lee's reasons for people to lie and hide their true identity is now self-apparent.

Go hide under a rock, Chris Lee. Good riddance!

Two wrongs don't make a right. It was wrong of a married man to go on Craig's List looking for trysts and it was wrong of her to share the pics and the e-mails. That said, regardless of who you are, you must keep in mind that anything that you say and/or post online or in an e-mail could come back to haunt you.

MISSING THE POINT!!

Seems like the readers here are missing a point. He lied, plain and simply, about something essential in his life and misrepresented himself to obtain sex, affection, friendship or whatever. When people do this for money it is called fraud, when they do this for reasons of the heart deception. It is grossly wrong and resigning isn't punishment enough but he will loose any reputation for honesty that he had.

HAHAHAHAH! This is just bloody nuts. I'm a very left of center Democrat (is that an oxymoron now?), and Rep. Lee is on the other side--but this prudery is too much. RESIGN? Over what? A little fantasy? Power jacks up the libido, but he was not bonking anyone then paying off their husband like Ensign. WHO IN THE WORLD WILL RUN FOR OFFICE IF WE KEEP THIS UP? And this Professor giving an object lesson to men who lie on line should get a bleedin' clue. Everybody lies on line. It's part of the silly game. I hope somebody outs her for something and she learns what this feels like. All she had to do was erase the email.
Makes me wonder about her politics and if she would have done the same if he was nearer to her point of view.
Once again, the French must be laughing and shaking their head over our naivete and priggishness.

I do not suspect for one minute that the woman enticed him to send the half nude photo. I rather suspect he offered this up with a challenge for her to follow suit. She declined and stopped the e-mail correspondence.

Like others who are writing here, I suspect that there is more to this story and it does not involve this woman. To be honest, I do not need to know more. He has resigned.

What an immature woman this is. And how immature are we as a nation. Mitterand had a mistress by whom he had a daughter while he was president of France. And it was no big deal to anyone there. The daughter even participated in his public funeral when he passed away. The French are mature enough to understand that a person's love life and sex life have absolutely nothing to do with their qualifications as an elected official AND that their sex life and love life really aren't anyone's business but their own. When are Americans going to grow up and quit acting like giddy kids when it comes to sex, relationships, and other adult pursuits.

I think everybody is overlooking the part where a married man that is in a position that requires honesty with millions of people showed he cannot even be trusted by his wife. I feel resignation is required because you can not hold the position that he was when you are not even honest and faithful with your wife.

5100: Wow. I don't frequent Craigslist, but I don't think everybody on the site is a killer. Single parents date. They met people online and offline.

This is a strange story though. I do think politicians need to be honest, and really, married men shouldn't be sending women they aren't married to photos of themselves, whether they're politicians or businessmen or plumbers.

But the speed in which he resigned... there's something odd there.

Lee is a man who has consistently voted to put Government into the bedrooms of ordinary American citizens. He is a hypocrite whose sordid sex life is absolutely public business.

Every single legislator who pushes his/her personal or religious beliefs onto the people, and who attempts to legislate their private morals onto everyone else deserves the same treatment. I hope the press identifies and shakes down the private lives of every "values voter" in Washington. What a bunch of hypocritical pigs.

As usual, the lowest denominators attack the messenger rather than address the fact that a congressman whose judgment effects legislation that rules the rest of us was caught lying and soliciting on Craigslist. She was doing nothing wrong. She's single and she didn't misrepresent herself. He did.

That said, his decision to resign was his dumb decision, not hers. Considering that Ensign, Vitter and Sanford are still holding on, Lee probably could have too, were he willing to endure the earned humiliation.

As for the lady, if she didn't need to be looking for a thrill on Craigslist, why was she? Certainly her right, but not a great place to do that. How about in person, socially? And she is one who decided to go to Gawker with it. Those sort of sites are not in business to keep things low key.

Folks who, for some reason, insist on parading themselves on Craig's List, when brains were being passed out decided they could do without, hence can't realize what an opportunity they missed.

Until, beset by a Delilah as was Sampson, they come to understand that interacting without a shirt on one's back may invite relationships that may get out of hand.

Thus young Congressman Lee came a cropper--no brains in his head as a stopper--with his torso displayed to a con.niv.ing maid in a manner deemed entirely improper.

As for folks who're on the list maintained by Craig, of course, we don't hope they'll be taken by plague, but do believe it's a list, of those who, brains-distribution, missed, and whose contact with reason accordingly is vague.

love the Dershowitz quote - maybe that should be required to be engraved in all men's wedding bands. Not that women are immune from this, but let's face it - you don't hear anything about Hillary, or Nancy, or Condi ever getting caught with their pants down.

There appear to be some here of the belief that some harlot was stalking the good Congressman, tricked and seduced him into doing stupid things that he, as an upright, moral Christian husband might not otherwise have done, then went public after finally trapping him. So hard for many to believe that there could be hypocrites in office that run on family value platforms that don't really mean it. Then, when faced with the growing number of these hypocrites, point at a Barney Frank and say "what about them?", while ignoring the fact that Mr. Frank has not made personal piety a campaign issue.

I think she should be reeling. She violated the Congressman's trust too. I'm no supporter of philandering congressmen, but it takes two to tango and Ms. Callahan was dishonest with the Congressman. She set up a false ad, communicated with him one on one and then divulged their private communications to the public. Why is he the only bad guy in this story? Ms. Callahan needs to tell her busy body,no-life having, unattractive friends to mind their business.

But more to the point, what's wrong with her site? Her site didn't entice Lee to make a fool of himself.

Chris Lee was just looking for some Chocolate Love, a little Brown Sugar, Jungle fever.

Someone needs to send him a copy of the Bell, Biv and Devo song: Poison. It says in part, "Never trust a big butt and a Smile.

Perhaps he should have signed up on Ashley Madison, and kept his Capitol Hill job.

Also, don't be mad at the sister for outing that dude. If he would have told the truth, he would have been alright.

Just say, yo, I am married and looking for some chocolate love. Yes or No!

I'm not condoning Lee's actions by any stretch. But is this broad kidding ? She's got plenty of dates , she says. Yeah, that's why she was on here in the first place, I suppose. You don't go on these things if your doorbell is wringing constantly, or your mailbox is full of invitations , Callahan.

I keep thinking how this story would be played differently if Chris Lee was a Democrat. Or black. Or gay. Or a woman. But that's just me I guess...

Cautionary Tale?

Yes, stay away from women who have worse judgement than you! LOL

Mr. Lee ought to sue this woman and her friends for intentional infliction of emotional harm. If she didn't want to correspond with him for any reason, all she had to do was say so. But intentionally trying to harm him and succeeding, is over the top, in my view. Thus, I hope he does sue her and I hope he wins a huge judgement against her and her immature friends!

I think there is a lot more to this story. About a month ago there were rumors that something was going on and the statement was made how much in love Lee was with his wife and family and how dare anyone print lies? When actual proof came out rather than continue to deny he resigned - so I 'm thinking there is a lot more out there - if he did this once I'm thinking there are a lot of photos and e-mails to men and/or women and Lee resigned hoping this ends the inquiry. If this was all that was out there I think he would have hung on -- after all he was just re-elected, the election for him wasn't that close and by the time his term was up the "scandal" would have been years in the past. So while I don't care one way or the other (I don't live in NY) it is almost a certainty in my mind that perhaps other photos are are x-rated or there are other contacts that go further than a lie and Lee is hoping to avoid a parade of people (like they did for Tiger Woods) coming out to sell their stories and enjoy their 2 seconds of fame.

Which half-naked man do heterosexual women and gay men like better -- Barack Obama at the beach or Chris Lee on Craigslist?

Lee's looks more vain, but a Congressman doesn't have the same media entourage as a President.

So which one do straight women and queer men like best?

Do we really want a Berlusconi in office? And no, I'm not a hypocrit- I'm definately not fit for an elected office, because of my self-discipline and episodes of deficient ethics. I want to be led by someone stronger and better than myself. She's withholding information. I'd like to see the content of the emails. If she was as diligent about defusing the situation as she say she was, he would've stopped contacting her.

C'mon, 10 emails!!! Something doesn't add up here. All she had to do was stop engaging him if she didn't want the attention. No, she got cute and listened to her "girlfriend" and went public and now she's in it up to her ears.

Seems like the readers here are missing a point. He lied, plain and simply, about something essential in his life and misrepresented himself to obtain sex, affection, friendship or whatever. When people do this for money it is called fraud, when they do this for reasons of the heart deception. It is grossly wrong and resigning isn't punishment enough but he will loose any reputation for honesty that he had."

You're kidding me, right? Women have been misrepresenting themselves for those exact reasons since the beginning of time.

Callahan is boringly sanctimonious. All she had to do was send an email to Chris Lee telling him that his deceits were exposed, that he should not contact her again and that he should desist.

She turned this into a song and dance. If she thinks that she has saved the world from one of its worst tragedies she should take a cold shower and reach for reality.

If it hadn't occurred to her that married men and women are unfaithful then she is naive.

Maybe this is her 15 minutes of fame.

I get him and what he wanted, I don't understand her. Craigslist, 10 emails exchanged and she had not set any ground rules, had no idea what he wanted? Please!

I think for her to have made a federal case out of some horny guy she encouraged in his actions for 10 emails makes me uncomfortable and suspicious. I don't believe for one second that she thought she would be or remain anonymous. After all, she willingly gave up his and her anonymity to a rabid "press" for no reason. She is not the morality police, if she were so outraged that he was betraying his marriage vows, she should have contacted his wife and stopped him in his tracks. I could go on about her behavior and motives but I'll stop now. Ooh and the Grand Counsel she called so that she could claim they urged her to go public. Please! Oh, I promised to stop.

I feel so sorry for the kids involved. The teenage son of the single mother will be made fun of for his mother's actions on craiglist, and the Rep's young son will be hurt also. I thought Craiglist was stopping all solicitation on their website. Should the authorities take her son should it be proven she was putting him in harm's way by her actions. Where's the father. Why doesn't he man up and make sure the teenage son is raised in a safe home. He's at fault also. I haven't heard anything about the father. Was he supporting the son. If not was that why she was on Craiglist. I say talk to the father and see what the thinks. He needs to be involved in that kid's life and I hope the children's exploitation unit in that city takes action and investigates. Maryland requires child support be paid or they go to jail. I think her IRS returns should be audited also to make sure ALL income was reported. There are a lot of unanswered questions and everyone needs to make sure if there were any laws broken. The Univ. of Maryland needs to take action if their employees are doing anything illegal and was she doing it on office time. That will be easy to check out.

I can't believe such a plain and simple scenario is being argued like this. Let's review:
Fact: Rep Lee ran as a "values" candidate, voted against DADT but he got caught with his shirt off.
Fact: The e mails are available on Gawker.com.
Fact: The guy is married and he went trolling.
Fact: He used his real name, his own phone and his own REAL e mail. For those who don't know, you can purchase an untraceable throw away phone with e mail and photo capabilities at the local 7-11
Fact: This guy did it all by himself. I'll ask: did anyone hold a gun to his head and make him contact this woman ?
Fact: The woman is now "being blamed" and called a "bimbo" - BS !!

Now for some opinion: There has to be more to this than one PG rated "dalliance". Does Speaker Boehner has a "zero tolerance" policy ? Why was his resignation so fast ? Its NOT the woman's fault its all Mr Lee's doing remember that. In fact, if you look at similiar things from the past this is what happens when "Mr Happy" takes over inertial guidance.

Sitting here ROFLMAO at Matt1st's comment that Mr. Lee should sue Ms. Callahan. OMG I think I hurt myself laughing. If you could get a lawyer to listen to such a premise for a suit without laughing, the judge certainly would throw it out of court as without merit to be heard.

Some here -- evidently chauvinists -- attempt to demonize the woman for blowing the whistle on him, but I'M glad she told. As several others have said, this will be the tip of the iceberg and we may hear quite soon of other women he's been romancing behind his wife's back. I frankly do not give a fat rat's a$$ what they think and do in Europe. This is America, and if ya wanna run on a "family values and morals" platform, ya best LIVE IT.

Someone doesn't tell the whole truth on craigslist? Who knew that might happen. C'mon lady, don't pull our legs with your tripe about deception and being outraged. No one is that stupid to believe you! You outed him to gain some fame and publicity for yourself and to kill his career. Being truthful about your motives isn't an awful thing, but trying to make us believe your lies . . . well that is just plain stupid!

Posted by: RBCrook | February 14, 2011 3:55 PM | Report abuse

I need all the commenters to think for a minute about what they would do if a married Congressman (or any other person of authority) contacted them via a dating site and then sent this photo. If you don't do dating sites, think church social, singles meetup, or whatever floats your boat. Would you really just keep that to yourself? If you say yes, you're lying.

The problem isn't that Lee's married, that he lied or that he is looking for a little on the side on Craigslist. It's that this is in stark contrast to what he represents publicly. This is minor and it's suspicious that he resigned over this. It's very likely more women will come out of the woodwork soon (some who probably didn't know he was a Congressman).

If he cared about his family and career so much, he would not be doing this (or at least he would have used an alias).

Posted by: pebkac | February 14, 2011 6:51 PM | Report abuse

Some people think he shouldn't have resigned so quickly, but I think he did right thing. First of all, how creepy and predatory is that picture. He resigned because he was humilated, his secret life has been exposed and now he doesn't have to explain to the public and he can finally have time to talk to his wife about his problem and why his marriage took a back seat to his addiction.I don't see how she could ever forgive him.Who could?
