Jon Kyl: Time to revisit drilling in ANWR
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) was cool to the idea that the Gulf oil spill could bring Republicans back to the table on energy legislation. The current version of the Senate's energy bill, he pointed out, has three legs: energy exploration, nuclear power and a carbon cap.
"At least temporarily, this has probably knocked out one of the legs of that stool," said Kyl. "My guess is that nothing proceeds at the moment. "
But Kyl warmly received a suggestion that the Senate could revisit the issue of drilling in a small portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve.
"Absolutely," said Kyl. "You're not in 5,000 feet of water. You've got a pipeline nearby. And you've got experience drilling in that area."
