During the health-care debate -- especially in the last stretch -- Republicans made the most of Firedoglake, a liberal blog with a mix of reporting (by Spencer Ackerman and David Dayen) and punditry that whipped hard against the passage of a bill without a public option. Democrats even went after the blog when it sponsored polls in swing districts that suggested a public-option-free bill was toxically unpopular.
Today, I see Republicans trying to get the band back together. Popular FDL diarist fflambeau published a post scorching President Obama over the Gulf Coast oil spill. "What’s really changed from W’s days?" wrote fflambeau. "I guess Brownie is gone but that’s about it."
A Republican hill staffer discovers this and blasts it out to reporters with the headline "Liberal Left: Obama Has Failed" and the extra text "FYI. A tipping point?"
In reality, we're not seeing much more criticism from the left on this issue -- the anger is directed at oil companies, the energy is all about getting the president to reverse his stance on offshore drilling. (MoveOn's campaign is a good example of this.) Still, this is how closely Republicans are watching the left for possible fissures.
