Virginia's Rep. Jim Moran -- beyond uncivil

By Jennifer Rubin

Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) has been roundly criticized in the past for his noxious comments about Jews and Israel. On an al-Hurra broadcast last night, he surpassed himself in calling much of the country a bunch of racists.

The Republican victories in the midterm elections, he said:

happened for the same reason the Civil War happened in the United States. It happened because the Southern states, the slaveholding states, didn't want to see a president who was opposed to slavery. In this case, I believe, a lot of people in the United States don't want to be governed by an African-American, particularly one who is liberal, who wants to spend money and who wants to reach out to include everyone in our society.

I am not going to try to unravel that obnoxious sentiment, or the political wisdom of calling his own state (which elected three Republican congressmen in November) racist. But, once again, this is a perfect time for the Democrats to police one of their own. Will they? What about the liberal pundits? I'm waiting.

I asked for comment from the offices of Democratic Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner and from Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly. So far, none of these colleagues from Virginia, one of the former "slaveholding states," have responded.

Moran was not wrong about race nor was he wrong about certain well-connected Jews pushing for war against Iraq for the benefit of Israel. Have you forgotten Richard Perle's/Bill Kristol's, PNAC, et.al., plan for "securing the realm?"

Even Thomas Friedman of the NYT admitted as much in a column and so did Haaretz in an editorial....Neocons, quote mostly Jews unquote, pushed for a Pearl Harbor type event that would provide a justification to invade Iraq....and Syria....and Iran to secure the realm of Israel and the establishment of a Greater Israel.

As far as race is concerned, I live in the South and can say from personal, daily experiences that many whites resent, yea detest, Obama because he is black. Some would not like him for his policies regardless of his race, as this former Republican came to detest GW Bush, but Obama's race makes them particularly and viciously racists.

One would have thought Jennifer, that even though you are relatively new to blogging you would have discovered by now that you can't B.S. all Americans about poor, helpless little Israel about to be pushed into the sea by Arab hordes armed with planes, tanks, and nuclear weapons, as the main stream media has done, and continues to do, for decades. The internet has exposed Israel and its supporters for what they are, Orwellian "historians," and all the hasbara projects American taxpayers can finance for Israel won't be able to prevent the truth from being told.

So Moran was right then and is right now about Israel and racists. The AIPAC/ADL inspired establishment media may forgive him some day for his comment about racists against Obama but Israel Firsters will never forgive him for daring to tell some truths about Israel.

What Rep Moran is doing is simply trying to shut down debate by calling people who disagree with Obama and the Democrats racists. This is the oldest trick in the book and only the slow-witted fall for it.

I am a life-long Virginian and have probably voted Democratic 95% of my 40+ voting years. I was a supporter of the civil rights movement back when it wasn't the easiest thing to be. Back then if you wanted to clarify the issue when somebody started in on the "colored" person who moved into the neighborhood, the "colored" child in his kid's classroom, the "colored" woman working in his office, all you had to do was ask one simple question: What is this "colored" person/child/woman doing that you find so objectionable? They couldn't answer this question because what they objected to was the person's race, not his actions. This attitude is the essence of racism.

Objecting to what people do isn't. Ask a person who opposes Obama what he is doing that they find objectionable and then pull up a chair and take out a legal pad. You will have a lot of writing to do.

Oh, BTW, in 2008, Obama got a higher percentage of the white vote than John Kerry did in 2004. Did the US suddenly turn racist in 2 years?

I lived in Alexandria for about 35 years and am pretty far to the left so I probably agree with most of Jim Moran's votes but I never considered him a deep thinker. On this issue he is simply wrong.

I wonder. Do you apologize every time a conservative sticks their foot in their mouth? If not, stop your hypocritical blanket judgementalism.

As an old school conservative,I have always believed that Lincoln was wrong, and the south had every right to secede. I wish they had,and I wish that they would in 2011. The only way the South will ever learn anything is to be allowed to stew in its own juices. Also,it would be a fascinating experiment in political social philosophy. The new Red nation would include Arizona,Oklahoma,Nebraska,Kansas,Nevada,Wyoming,Montana,Alaska,Idaho, plus the original confederacy.

@billyvw: You know the answer to your own question. This is her blog, she makes the rules.

If you have specific instances when she's let uncivil conservatives off the hook, such as Maine Governor Paul LePage earlier this month or Rep. Paul Broun's (R-GA) Twitter barbs at the President during the SotU Address, feel free to post them. I doubt she'll care, but it could make for interesting comment threads.

As an Old School Conservative a la Buckley,I made a comment the other day about real money versus monopoly money. You didn't respond. Gold backed money is conservative, fiat money is liberal,is that simple enough for you? Read and learn.

"What Is A Gold Standard?
Nathan Lewis, 01.27.11, 12:01 AM EST
When the goal is stable money values, it is the preferred tool.
The U.S. used a gold standard from its inception in 1789 until 1971, a stretch of 182 years. In 1965--not that long ago--all major countries in the world participated in the worldwide gold standard system known as the Bretton Woods arrangement.
With this experience, you would think these things would be well understood, but they are not. We have to start again at the most basic level: What is a gold standard?"

Given that a number of Republican party officials felt perfectly comfortable circulating clearly racist cartoons widely, and given that in 2004 -- just six years ago -- 40% of Alabama voters voted to keep the bar on miscegenation in the Alabama state constitution, and given that the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee got shot down for a federal judgeship -- BY HIS FELLOW REPUBLICANS -- for excessively close ties to the KKK and who, along with other Republicans on the Judiciary Committee, clearly feel uncomfortable with people whom they consider uppity, maybe Cong. Moran's claim that many of the Republicans in the former slave states may be unenthusiastic about having a black President might actually have some basis in reality.

Thank you ever so much Lazarus40 for the valuable information about American foreign policy! What a relief to find out that those clever Jews can lead those rather stupid Gentiles around by the nose, indeed, those clever Jews can even talk America's stupid Gentile leaders into sending their children to die in a war for Israel, and even hoodwink the stupid American Gentile public to support the war. And this is all being promoted by the Jews who dominate the stupid Gentile American media!
And all those unreformed and uniformed Southerners are just a bunch of racists who can't abide Obama because he is a mulatto. I am surprised that Lazarus40 didn't lay that particular phenomenon on the Jewish doorstep as well.
No Lazarus40 I am afraid that there is no all powerful and all influential Jewish cabal running America from behind the scenes and manipulating a bunch of gullibel, naive, and rather stupid Gentile American politicians, leaders, and media, although as a Jew the idea does have some appeal to me.
And as far as the South is concerned, even when I lived in a small town northeast of Atlanta thirty years ago, there were just about as many so called Yankees living there as "Southerners". And most of the people I knew and worked with did their level best to get along with each other, no matter if they were White or Black.
I have to say that maybe you Lazarus40 are the one with the prejudice problem towards both Jews and Blacks since you define America's problems through a Jewish and African American prism and both groups seem to dominate your clearly absurd and undeniably hateful thinking.
You should really get a life.

So much for the new civility.

I live in Moran's Congressional district and I understand for the most part why his constituents keep re-electing him. The problem with comments like this is that not only are they unproductive but they are also unfounded.

There are a lot of smart individuals who live in northern Virginia. It is too bad they can't elect a representative who reflects their intelligence and represent their interests without seeking the refuge of scoundrels with inflammatory remarks like this.

Just remember the next time you visit Old Town Alexandria, Rosslyn, Courthouse, Ballston, and Reston that the supposedly cultured and sophisticated people who live in these places are the ones that keep reelecting this anti-semitic turd to embarrass the rest of us who actually have a brain.

The Post has been hounding Moran for years because he is seen as being insufficiently pro-Israel. Give it a rest.

Posted by: ThoughtfulGuy | January 27, 2011 12:40 PM | Report abuse

The sad thing is that Moran's outrageous comments are well-received in his deep blue district. That's how many progressives actually think, as reflected in some of the posts here. The irony is that progressives think normal patriotic Americans are the nuts and kooks -- "bitter clingers" and racists in their parlance.

The public is catching on to how contemptuous the liberal establishment is toward them. Obama cynically trying to mimic Reagan's sunny patriotism is just the latest example of "how dumb do they think we are?" Moran is saying what they actually think of us.

WFB once wrote a column or more concerning some of these issues around the time Norman Lear's "All in the Family", with its character the bigot Archie Bunker, was the top-rated television series. Had some interesting things to say vis-a-vis the liberal mindset. I believe it's in the anthology A Hymnal: The Controversial Arts. You (all?) can look it up -- well worth reading, still, plus his subsequent apologetics about civil rights, etc. Enjoy!

FYI, Rep. Moran's office has issued a statement.

Moran doubles down:

With nearly 1,000 identified hate groups in the U.S. and recent studies showing a majority of Americans believe racism is still widespread against African-Americans, it is no secret that our country has and continues to struggle with racial equality. The Congressman was expressing his frustration with this problem and the role it played in the last election. Rather than ignore this issue or pretend it isn't there, the Congressman believes we are better off discussing it in order to overcome it.

Rep. Moran believes that despite these pervasive problems, President Obama has the ability to make this a more unified, diverse, and stronger country.
------------------
Apparently the same electorate that elected Obama and carried Virginia for him has experience in the past two years, to paraphrase Lincoln, a new birth of racism.

These people are pathetic losers. This is their sophisticated logic: The voters have turned decisively against us. Ergo the voters are racists.

To econiii... I'm sorry but I'm getting tired of the same old story that everyone is racist toward African Americans. I have never seen such a stretch by politicians to call everyone who disagrees with policy a racist. This congressman owes the entire US a big apology. Spouting his tripe to a Middle Eastern audience does nothing to approve anything. Yes I'm white and I do not and never will judge a man or woman by their color. Sure there are racist out there, on both sides and a lot of us are tired of being lumped into that group.

Jim Moran made a dumb comment as did other dumb backwardly moblie liberals who commented about VA citizens and Israeli's.

Liberals have been dumbed down to s state of stupidity that is only common to sheep like buffoonery in which the sheep wait to be fed the news only to agree with the dumbest sources and they think without the benefit of intellect because they seldom question the source.

Is it no surprise democratsare silent as are many in the corrupt liberal media. Moran is stooge for this and other low classed comments. You choads who agree with Moran are low a bunch of low classed degenerate liberal bigots for being indiferent to people who disagree with Obama's politics.

If you low classed liberals ever learn that there are many black mayors, congressment and business leaders in this nation........all of whom are accepted as equal Americans then perhaps then can you begin to think with a modicum of intellect. As is you are lost sheep who feed at the trough of ignorance and innuendo without care nor concern that there are very few facts to support such assinine conclusions. Very childish and classless.

Idiot liberals pretend to forget the hateful MoveOn.org protestors, Bush war protestors and the dumb media rants. People can disagree with Obama and still like him as an American.....why do you think his popularity polls are so high? Its because people accept Obama as a blackman but not his politics.

You choads can't reason with the facts because you lack the intellectual might requuired to make complex conclusions. No, its easer for you to be force fed and act like stupid children.

Yet liberals made up the majority of slave owners, democrats were the party of slavery, partyy of Jim Crow and party of Segregation. most of you are too ignorant to comprehend the real world and its sad to see you be so easily programmed but some of you are suckers.

Posted by: javatrader | January 28, 2011 4:49 AM | Report abuse

As has been noted endlessly, the Democrats in living memory were the party of segregation and institutionalized racism. Moran is as stupid as Cong. McDermott of the Seattle area---it seems suburbs and Irish drunks produce endlessly stupid congresscritters.

Posted by: djman1141 | January 28, 2011 9:00 AM | Report abuse

Moran is insulting the majority of voters in his own state, plus three new Republican congressmen who were elected in November. He is either more stupid than anyone in the House except the average Black Caucus member---Maxine Waters says the same racist canard on a weekly basis---or he is just a drunk who shoots off his mouth. Probably both apply.

Jim Moran is an embarrassment to the entire state of VA. The question is not why the Republicans won, but why Moran continues to win re-election. How would his constituents feel if someone accused his voters of being too stupid to recognize what a loser the guy is. Please, NOVA, you can do better!

Posted by: RichmondReader2 | January 28, 2011 10:17 AM | Report abuse

Jim Moran, the biggest embarrassment to the State that ever lived, more embarrassing though are the non-thinking constituents who continue to elect this Cro Magnon man into office. Its time for the electorate to vet another candidate who is thoughtful, credible and won't continue to embarrass the district. Lets all ship the entire Moran Clan back north to Boston from whence they came!!!

The blood (and race) libel by the Democrat Party continues full speed without shame.
Obama is a clueless, hack machine politician whose State of the Union campaign speech promised to multiply, not correct, the economic insanity that has put us in such a tremendous hole in his first two years.
Jim Moran is a racist idiot who should be
ejected from Congress for his slurs on the American people. We're supposed to adore someone more incompetent even than Moran because of his skin color?
Virginia voters who put this foul-mouth in Congress should ve ashamed of themselves.

Posted by: kypriotis | January 29, 2011 2:02 AM | Report abuse

Jim Moron is a mean, dumb racist and should be kicked out of Congress. Imagine if a patriotic American--that means a conservative--spewed such garbage even though they never do, but what would the media reaction be? More lynch mobs riding out to find Americans who actually like their country and their families too and believe in fiscal sanity and want a President who wants to keep America great and prosperous--not a socialist windmill commune.
Obama's state of the union campaign speech
promised more economic stupidity and disaster. That's why Americans reject him now and di last November after being conned in 2008.
