European royals at Prince William's wedding
The guest list for the wedding of Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton isn't finalized -- but some European royals have made it known that they're in.
Alexander said in a statement posted on his Web site that he and his wife, Crown Princess Katherine, had been invited by Britain's monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, to her grandson's wedding. "Their Royal Highnesses are delighted to attend the marriage and are very happy for the young couple," the statement said.
A bit of background from the article: Alexander's family fled the Balkans during World War II after the Nazis invaded. They settled in Britain, and Alexander was born at a London hotel. AP reports that Elizabeth II attended Alexander's baptism at Westminster Abbey in 1945 and is the Serbian prince's godmother.
It isn't clear from the story which Romanian royals will be attending. The article notes that former King Michael "was forced to abdicate in 1947 as the communists tightened their grip on Romania." Michael is a great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria; a third cousin of Britain's queen; and a first cousin of her husband, Philip, "with whom he spent childhood summer vacations on the Black Sea coast," according to AP. Michael was a guest at Elizabeth and Philip's 1947 wedding.
AP also said it "wasn't immediately clear" whether other European royalty had received formal or informal invitations. A spokeswoman for the British royal family declined to comment on the guest list, which isn't final; we noticed that AP wasn't specific about which palace (that of the queen, or William's father, Prince Charles) wouldn't comment. Formal invitations for William and Kate's wedding are reportedly to be mailed next month.
