All Tied Up for Queen's Dinner at White House

UPDATE: According to the official guest list, L'il Babs Bush -- or "Miss Barbara Bush" as she's listed -- is attending tonight's white-tie-and-tails state dinner with her boyfriend Jay Blount, whom she's been dating (maybe on again, off again) since they met at Yale.

Blount, as you can see here, was named one of Yale's 50 most beautiful people.

Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is taking someone who has previously accompanied her to official functions -- former San Francisco 49er Gene Washington, who is now director of football operations for the NFL. Rice and Washington have been the subject ofgossip in the past.

Many Cabinet officials are attending tonight, along with House SpeakerNancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Minority LeaderJohn Boehner (R-Ohio) and their spouses. Golf legend Arnold Palmer and his wife will be there, as will: Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolton and First Brother Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida.

FROM EARLIER:

The owner of Scogna Formal Wear in downtown Washington has pulled the smallest white tie and tails he has for perhaps the lightest and fastest guest attending tonight's White House state dinner: Calvin Borel, the jockey who won his first Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Borel got a last-minute invitation from the White House to attend the dinner for Queen Elizabeth after he guided Street Sense from next to last place to the front of the pack and across the finish line by 2 ¼ lengths.

Scogna assistant manager Jerry Morris says they "didn't get any measurements" but guessed that the store's smallest tails -- a 35-short -- should do the trick. "That's the smallest size we have."

Owner Israel Scheinbein says he guesses Borel is "about a 28-inch waist, so this should work."

Besides the Kentucky Derby star, who is taking his fiancée, Lisa Funk, to the Bushes' first ever white-tie affair, a number of Washington luminaries also rented their tails from Scogna, including National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, who is a regular at the store.

"I told him, 'Mr. Hadley, I think you look splendid.' He just smiled. Very diplomatic," Scheinbein told the Sleuth.

The slim-and-trim Hadley, who has been having a tough time of late with his mission to find someone to take the job of "war czar" in the administration, wears a 41 jacket.

Scheinbein says Brent Glass, director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, rented his white tie and tails from the store. So did Newsweek reporter Richard Wolffe, a native Brit who covers the White House.

We called Wolffe to verify. "I am going as a matter of fact," he said.

And though he hails from Birmingham, England, this will be his first time ever seeing the Queen. "I did see the back of her limo once," he said. "I'm excited!"

(An early list of the guest list for tonight's dinner is after the jump.)

Veteran's Complaint
Miss Use Of Veterans Administration.
When a 100% disabled Veteran complains that public elected officials are using the Veterans administration for retribution and no one cares, what should be done? I have violated no laws or threaten any one. What I have done is set my medical problems aside to volunteer my time to help a Madbury NH family. United States citizens so desperate because the Madbury NH selectmen are using their political powers for revenge against local residents that the selectmen do not like. This Madbury family called me because of something that I said in a letter to the editor. I had never met this family before. Judge Peter Fauver knowingly with intent to harm allowed 29 constitutional crimes against the welfare of the United States. Judge James O'Neill approved these crimes to protect a brother judge. The NH supreme court ignored these crimes to protect their legal empire. The federal courts stated that judges have immunity from Constitutional crimes to protect their monopoly on power. When I will not stop my volunteer help to this family, NH declares me a terrorist and takes my freedom, stops my VA medical, fines me, uses the state police to scare my wife and kids and much more. This does not work so congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter uses here position on the Arm-Services committee to have VA Dr. Biswas sign a commitment order. A U.S. Congress woman files false police reports and the Lee and Dover NH police refuse to allow me to file a complaint.
I have complained to everyone from the President of the United States to the local officials. The Newspapers censor the truth. I ran for state and local elected office and my platform is blocked from the public. NH Governor Lynch charges me money to speak with him. Lynch takes my money and stiff's me. Am I crazy? This reads like a bad joke. The fact is that I can day after day write these facts and no one can stop me. The truth is a powerful weapon. I have done everything humanly possible to protect the dignity of our Constitution. The State of NH has tortured me as a means to silence a citizens free speech. I may be putting my efforts out for this one Madbury family but I do it for every United States citizen. If the NH and Federal government can use injuries that I received doing my tour in the Marine Corps to stop me, we as a nation are in deep trouble. The facts have been stated in court documents and much more. No one cares.
I was injured three times while serving. Twice in combat support missions during the Vietnam Conflict. I came back with no memory of the United States. I have a traumatic brain injury. I thought we had checks and balances built into our system of government to stop a dominate government. There is absolutely no reason every newspaper in the United Stats should not be compelled to print this letter. If the United States can allow our government to do this to me we are no better than I-a-toll-a. If the United States allows this to continue I beg you to allow the NH state police or the VA to kill me. Peter Macdonald Sgt USMC Semper Fi 465 Packersfalls rd Lee NH 03824 603-659-621

Shouldn't these big-wigs just buy a tailcoat instead of renting? Renting makes the event seem more high-school-prom than State Dinner.

I hope at least a few of 'em tie their own ties....

If the letter from SgtMacdonald is true, then I would hope that ALL the newspapers, including the Washington Post, WOULD print this letter. This happens all too often in small towns and grows like a cancer.
Please help him
Thanks

hi,
When its the woman, its fiancee, not fiance.
So, unless Lisa Funk is a man, she should be referred to as his fiancee :)

The letter from Sgt Macdonald above is probably NOT TRUE - at least not in the traditional sense. Not having met him, his letter nonetheless indicates that he very likely suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. It's a terrible disorder and very frightening for the afflicted. I wish him the very best, but I wouldn't forward that letter to anyone.

Mrs Cheney's brother and sister-in-law, but not the Senior Bushes? Huh?

Posted by: Anonymous | May 7, 2007 8:58 PM | Report abuse

The exclusion of the Senior Bushes is a real mystery. Even if they weren't the current president's parents, one would have thought that they qualified by being the most recent to have hosted the Queen for dinner at the White House. Certainly they would be more appropriate guests then their granddaughter Paris....err, I mean, Barbara

Aint a single rapper anywheres around that dinner. Yo, who gonna provide the comedy then?

It's disheartening to see the usual media suck-ups like David Gregory and Richard Wolf imbedded in this tribute to monarchy(both English and American).

Can reporters who cozy up to the power elite ever really be honest and conscientous in their coverage of the very people who they party with? I doubt it.

We need the media to ferret out the truth, no matter where that takes them, or who they offend getting there.

Commentators on C-Span stated that Senator Harry Reid had "declined" an invitation to last night's festivities at the White House.

Anyone know the [true] reason why?

Who the hell cares? While our young soldiers are getting maimed and killed in Iraq, the guilty will DINE!

How about something on MISTER Pelosi? And what's Condi doing dumping OJ (that New Year's Eve last-minute last-one-left escort service date) for someone else?

Shouldn't bush be wearing a court jester's costume? On the eve of sending another 35,000 kids to Iraq, we have the spectacle of hayseed bush clowning for the Queen? He's delusional, dangerous, and a global embarrassment.
