Aloha, Little Barry Obama for President!
It never occurred to Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) when he was drinking beer and eating pizza with his buddy Barack Obama as graduate students in the early '60s that he would one day be campaigning for Obama's son for president. Little Barry wasn't even born yet.
"Little Barry, that's what we called him," Abercrombie says, recalling his days with Obama Sr. and his future wife, Ann Dunham, at the University of Hawaii. "He was a beautiful child. He's a handsome man now, very striking."
Before little Barry came along, Abercrombie and Obama, the future father of a potential future president, would sit around and "pontificate" and "admire each others' intellect." The congressman remembers Sen. Obama's late father as charismatic and brilliant - "easily the most outstanding personality and intellect combined that I've ever encountered."
And little Barry was the perfect "genetic combination" of his parents, Abercrombie recalls of the baby who was born on Aug. 4, 1961.
"His voice and demeanor is like his mom and his intellect is like his dad," the congressman says. "It's interesting that Barack has this smooth baritone voice because his dad's was much richer and fuller." Abercrombie says Obama the father sounded like James Earl Jones.
Even though Sen. Obama suggests in his memoir "Dreams of My Father" that he struggled with issues of race and racism at Punahou School in Hawaii, Abercrombie says little Barry's parents' interracial marriage wasn't an issue in Hawaii as it would have been elsewhere in the country. Obama Sr., a "very dark African man," Abercrombie says, was "accepted immediately in Hawaii" and "his marriage to Ann was accepted without question or comment. Almost anywhere else, it not only would have been highly unusual, but highly controversial." (Ann Dunham Obama was a white woman whose parents moved to Hawaii from Kansas.)
And it's that "Aloha spirit" that makes Obama an ideal White House candidate, Abercrombie says. "The Aloha spirit is real," he insists. And little Barry - Barack Hussein Obama Jr. - has it.
"The most appealing thing about Senator Obama is his capacity to almost instantaneously bond with the people who are around him," he says. And that's all on account of "being born in Hawaii of parents who really were citizens of the world, ahead of their time."
Abercrombie doesn't speculate on why his good friend from graduate school left his wife and small child in Hawaii - an abandonment that Sen. Obama acknowledges deeply affected him - and eventually went back to Kenya. He says "in those days it had to do with the patriarchal kind of world from which he came. Despite his brilliance, he was still somewhat trapped in it."
Between the time that Obama Sr. left Hawaii and died in a car accident in Kenya in 1982, Abercrombie saw him once. The future congressman and a friend were backpacking around the world in the late 1960s and traveled the length of the Nile River and caught up with Obama in Nairobi.
About 35 years later, Abercrombie saw Obama Jr. for the first time as an adult as Obama's half sister Maya's wedding in Hawaii. Just seeing Obama conjured a torrent of nostalgic feelings for his friends Barack and Ann, both of whom had died by that point. But when Obama began speaking, Abercrombie says he began "weeping, thinking about his mom and dad and how I wished they were here to see it."
"Within two minutes of his remarks I was saying to my wife, 'He's got to run for president.'"
Since then, Abercrombie has campaigned for Obama. But he says the senator has avoided discussing his parents, especially his father, with him. "We've had the opportunity but he never wanted to pursue it. I'm not sure he's comfortable with it."
Obama's campaign had nothing to say about Abercrombie's close friendship with the presidential candidate's late father or whether the senator prefers to avoid the topic. But as for Obama's "Alaho spirit" that Abercrombie praises, Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said, "Hawaii is a melting pot where Obama was introduced to children and families from different cultures and all walks of life. But it's in Chicago where Obama found the calling of his life - as a community organizer who inspired folks without much hope to bring about change in their lives."

I think I know why.
1. Barack Hussein Obama Sr. was a muslim.
2. Ann Dunham, mother of "Little Barry" (the Barack Hussein Obama that wants to be president of the U.S.) divorced Obama Sr. and remarried to yet another muslim!
3. Obama was raised by his step-father and was enrolled in a muslim school.

Spiffy, you're a liar. Obama is a Christian.

He is much more than a community organizer, which is a big job in itself to be sure.... He is a gifted strategic thinker, and with his serious intellect and good sense he has the ability to make much needed changes for the whole country.

To Drudge's pal:
Facts are NOT lies. However, I do understand that the truth hurts.
"Little Barry" is a decent guy, but THAT IS his background and that is not my fault. Do the research and weep!

Senator Obama is not a muslim, he was enrolled at a school that was a melting pot of religious students, all faiths, taught by an Asian man. My parents never attended church and yet I am a Christian. What a persons ancestors do, should not be a basis of wether or not that individual should lead our country. However, I believe that what a person does, his legacy, integrity, and faith, and what that person does to change our world for the better, should be the basis of whom shall lead our country. A man who walks with God cannot be shaken, by no man. That is the leader I want. Obama may not tell you what you want to hear, but he will certainly tell you what you need to hear. All of us should make a commitment to change this world, as Obama has said, together.

Based on the previous coments I think its incredible the thigs people can draw from an article such as this.I think that moral standings are what should first and foremost decide who is to be the future president of the United Stats and although religon is important too many people hold it in too igh regard when judgeing a person. However puting that aside articles such as this make it much easier for the common American too vote for a candidate because it humanizes them and can make the candidate easeier to relate to.

Reading Barack Obama's book "The Audacity of Hope" convinced me that he was a sincere Christian who respects others and the truth he finds in their positions---on both sides of any argument. Thus, he has more potential to unite our country than any other Presidential candidate.

Enjoy the blog very much. As a recent reader, I've enjoyed the subtle way you poke at the pompousness found on both sides. And when you throw in a posting like this, which takes a more serious look at an individual or topic, I find the changed tone to be just as interesting and enjoyable. Keep up the great work!!

Spiffy -
It's amusing when you use the word "FACT" -are you getting your "facts" from Faux news? Obama was never a Muslim. He was a child who was a blend of many things. Perhaps you have never been out of the country. My neices (who are 1/2 white, 1/2 black, 1/2 jewish and 1/2 christian) went to a European School in Tanzania that was run by the Cathiolic Church buit they are not Catholics. It was just the best local school.
As Pee Wee Herman would say, I know I am but WHAT ARE YOU? Get your facts straight -
it is the actual lies (Iraq=wmd) that got us into trouble. Let's listen to someone who is actually telling the truth for a change.
Obama 08.

The following is pasted from the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life website. If you're looking for an unbiased accounting of his religious background (not one that is of the fear-mongering sort), please give it a look. (www.pewforum.org/religiono8/profile.php?CandidateID4)
Obama Religious Biography
In His Own Words
"Faith doesn't mean that you don't have doubts. You need to come to church in the first place precisely because you are first of this world, not apart from it. You need to embrace Christ precisely because you have sins to wash away - because you are human and need an ally in this difficult journey."
(Speech, June 28, 2006)
Obama describes his upbringing as not "particularly religious." His father was raised a Muslim but became an atheist before he met Obama's mother. When Obama was two, his father left the family and moved back to his homeland of Kenya. Obama's mother was raised by a Baptist and a Methodist, both of whom were "non-practicing." Obama describes his mother as "one of the most spiritual and kindest people I've ever known," but with a "healthy skepticism of organized religion." When she remarried, it was to an Indonesian man who Obama said practiced "a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths."
After his mother's second marriage, Obama spent five years in Indonesia where he attended a Catholic school for three years and a predominantly Muslim public school for one year. The heritage of Obama's father and stepfather as well as Obama's middle name - Hussein - have led to media questions about the Illinois senator's religious identity. In response, Obama's spokesman said that "Senator Obama has never been a Muslim" and "is a committed Christian."
After graduating from college, Obama began attending a congregation affiliated with the United Church of Christ, a mainline Protestant denomination with 1.2 million members. Obama has said that he was moved by the "power of the African-American religious tradition to spur social change" while working as a community organizer for a group of churches in Chicago, and that he "felt God's spirit beckoning me." He was baptized in the church he now attends, Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ.

I find this interesting. Who really cares what his religion is. Obama is a bright man who obviously had bright parents. I respect Rep.Abercrombie's pleasant memories.
But that doesn't make Obama any more ready to be President. It is just an interesting take on his background.

Religion? Screw religion. It's the main source of divisiveness, war, and serves the will of man, not the other way around.
I don't care if Obama is a wiccan, if he can run this country without starting false wars, UNJUST wars, contain healthcare, stop increasing our debt, borrowing money from China, politicizing our most important branch of government, it's ok.
But he's still a politician, and after living in Chicago for a couple of years, Obama is not the "savior" alot of blind liberals are hoping for. He's politics as usual, and this is evidenced in his voting record...And when the vote for action on Iran came up, he was missing in action. Pretty ridiculous who's sole platform is to pile on Hillary for voting FOR the Iran resolution.

Destardi - I agree with you, religion should have nothing to do with it.
But when you say "And when the vote for action on Iran came up, he was missing in action. Pretty ridiculous who's sole platform is to pile on Hillary for voting FOR the Iran resolution." you need to do some research.
Obama is all of the above and more. He will never be owned by anyone but the American people.

I haven't figured out the obsession with Barack Obama. A previous blogger here said Sen Obama will tell exactly what he thinks.I sure haven't seen that since he became an icon of the media where like a lot of the candidates givesmeaningless, flowery speeches calculated to pander to whichever audience (and their special interest funding) they are addressing.I sure donot think he has the experience or relationships necessary to be an effective leader. I don't know why people are obsessed with politica heroes built on looks and rhetoric. Actions due speak louder than words I hdare say. Hence with no record, one can pretend to be anything the public likes.

Obama for president, what a disappointment. Look at his resume it has a big zero on it. Obama has done nothing; he is a product of affirmative action and the media. Obama has never had a real job!

It is sad that we all have to throw innuendo around at presidential primaries. What we wnned to do is create a public record of each candidate's past based on FBI investigations required fro Military Top Secret clearnace. This ought to be published for one and all to see so we don't need these boards and circular arguments. Obama was in touch with muslim extremists and that is enought to DQ him from being president of the US.
