Ted Stevens' Near Rendezvous With FBI
Sure, adversaries in Washington by day often make the best of drinking buddies by night. But when insiders at the FBI saw that Sen. Ted Stevens had RSVP'd "yes" to last Friday's annual director's holiday bash - it was difficult even for those hunters to imagine partying with their prey.
It was just five months ago, after all, that FBI agents raided the Alaska Republican's home as part of a wide-ranging federal corruption probe. And given the increasing success of the investigation, there's every reason to believe Stevens remains squarely in the bureau's sights.
Every member of Congress is invited to the holiday soiree, but Stevens was among those who had replied to say he'd actually be attending the annual FBI fete. In the end, the embattled senator must have gotten cold feet: he was a no-show at the packed party... where - you guessed it - handcuffs and holsters abounded.
