Rep. Weldon To Spend More Time With Family, Really

In this case at least, it appears a retiring politician really is leaving to spend more time with his family.

Rep. Dave Weldon (R-Fla.), a physician, announced today that he'll retire at the end of the 110th Congress to return to his medical practice and spend more time with his family. Ironically, his announcement came hours after his 21-year-old daughter, Katie Weldon, was arrested and jailed after allegedly assaulting a Brevard County bar employee with her shoe.

Read more on the arrest here:

Weldon spokesman Jeremy Steffens says the timing of the daughter's arrest is just coincidental. Weldon informed House Minority Leader John Boehner two weeks ago that he would be retiring, Steffens says, adding, "He never wanted to be a career politician."

Weldon issued a statement about his daughter's arrest saying, "Mrs. Weldon and I have been made of aware of an incident involving our daughter last night. After talking with her we feel quite certain she did nothing to merit her arrest and believe this will be corroborated by others. We stand by our daughter's assertion in this matter and ask that her privacy be observed until all the facts are out."

Weldon brings to 21 the number of House Republicans who have announced they will retire at the end of this Congress, leaving Democrats with an even better shot at significantly increasing their majority next year. Four other House Republicans, including former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) have resigned, two of them to seek higher office.

Meanwhile, only six House Democratic seats will be open in the 2008 congressional elections -- three due to illness or death of the incumbent. Democrats view Brevard County Commissioner Nancy Higgs as a very strong challenger to enter the race for Weldon's open seat.

It's SHOEGATE! Gotta be more to the story than this. But being a GOP member of Congress has got to be disappointing these days; they've scroooood up the country so much in the last decade or so.

So the spend-spend-spend Republicans take this country and the hardworking middle class with their tax giveaways to Paris Hilton and her crowd, then run out of town when the bills start rolling in. I'd like to take more than a shoe to folks who believe in Republican values instead of American ones.

Thanks, Rep. Weldon, for leaving after voting for the largest deficits the world has ever seen, for voting for the largest spending increases in the last 50 years, for voting for a war without end and without reason, for voting for torture, warrantless searches and seizures, thanks for supporting our idiot in chief while he and his friends are robbing this country blind. Thanks for leaving all these and other problems too numerous to mention. Thanks and good riddance.

Based on the performance of the Congress in the past, now (since the election in 2006), and for the last eight years, a change that includes patriotism, honesty, and sincere efforts to serve this country honorably would be refreshing.
It is time voters evaluate, very carefully, their representatives' record. Does their record reflect they have compromised or sold out to lobbyist, globalist (that seek to destroy our Republic), and foreign governments meddling in our domestic affairs? Have these representative failed to place the welfare of Americans first? If so, punish, by replacing them. It is time that our so-called representatives listen to their constituents. Defying the will of the American people should result in recall and/or a defeat at the polls. These issues include: securing and defending the borders, ports, protecting our sovereignty, stopping illegal immigration, enforcing our immigration laws, and wasting and abusing taxpayers' monies to benefit an invasion,

When the Blue Tidal Wave washes America clean of all the GOP neocons, we will look back and say that those who left early rather than in the Deluge, were the smart ones.

Good riddance.

Just how much time can a parent spend with a 21 year old daughter who spends time in the bar scene? It would be refreshing for a departing politician to come up with more inventive reasons for leaving the sinking ship. Regards, Carl W.
