Rep. Vito Fossella: Drunker Than Just Drunk

There's drunk, and then there's knee-walking drunk, to steal a phrase from Conrad Burns, the colorful former senator from Montana. And Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) definitely fits into the category of knee-walking drunk.

Fossella was arrested early Thursday in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Va., and charged with driving while intoxicated. Now, an NBC affiliate in New York reports that the Staten Island congressman's blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.

According WNBC.com, Fossella's blood alcohol level was .17 at the time of his arrest. The legal blood alcohol limit in Virginia is .08, which is the national standard. He faces up to five days in jail.

Mug shot of Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.), who was arrested early Thursday on drunken driving charges.

Fossella apologized today at a news conference held in his district on Staten Island. He released a statement saying: The night before last, I made an error in judgment. I was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Virginia. I take full responsibility for my actions and recognize that I have embarrassed my family, the constituents of the 13th Congressional District and myself. For that. I apologize."

He went on to say: "The bottom line is I know better. I know better than to get behind a wheel of a car even after one drink. I am blessed to be the father of some very, very beautiful children, I need to set an example for them and all the young people here in New York. Unfortunately, I failed to set that example the other night and I deeply regret that. I hope that in the coming weeks my family and residents of this community will forgive this error and forgive me. It's one that I will never make again."

There go his mayoral hopes down to the bottom of the bottle.

So he had three beers. That's all it takes to be twice over the legal limit these days.

"So he had 3 beers"
More like 6 but it would take 20 to be knee walking drunk.

30 if he drinks regularly.

Ahh well one must understand the hopes for Repugs isn't very good now is it? Does that qualify for an excuse for his bender?

Like so many Republicans, Fossarella takes responsibility for his actions by taking no responsibility.

One would expect that members of the Party of Moral Clarity would hold themselves to the same standards they seek to impose on others.

Fossarella comes from a culture in which drunkeness is considered a sin and a disgrace and in which public drunkeness is intolerable.

Fossarella should resign.

Human beings make errors in life. The problem is that only Democrats need bear the roundly publicized stain of sin and public banishment thanks to the rightwing noise machine like Fox and sex traveler Rush. Dry drunks like Geo W. Bush, a past humming head alky and sniffling, blinking coke head, can hide behind Jesus and still have their followers believe they are better leaders because they have sinned and been saved, even when the malice is not gone from their hearts and they go on to lie, lie, lie for self gain and power. Vito is actually a pretty good guy as far as Republicans go - not full of hate like so many others.

I'm prepared to give Mr. Fosella the same measure of understanding and forgiveness that he would have given a Democratic politician had they been in the same position: Zero, Zilch, Nada!!!!

I found Mr. Fonsella's statement a vast improvement over the ones used by most of his Republican colleagues. He sounded sincere, which was a radical departure from Vitter, Craig, etc. and his statement was certainly head and shoulders above anything we've heard from those in higher positions in the Party.
Of course, Mr. Fonsella was apologizing for a deliberate decision which he vows never to repeat. Mr. Bush can only take refuge in not recognizing his own congenital stupidity and Cheney and Co. their own unbounded avarice.

Rep. Fosella sayshe hopes "that in the coming weeks my family and residents of this community will forgive this error and forgive me. It's one that I will never make again." I'm sure he hopes that the voters forget it by election time.

Where was the part about him walking on his knees? I was looking forward to the video.

Posted by: First Stone | May 5, 2008 3:26 PM | Report abuse

More than double the legal limit. A good-damn menace to society and all one gets is possibly five days in jail. The laws should be much stronger. Drunk driving is so easily avoidable.

You're never going to end drunk driving, so just tax it.

Posted by: get over it | May 5, 2008 4:31 PM | Report abuse

a drunk driving tax is a great idea, it would help America reclaim some of the Kennedy hoard

Posted by: hey | May 5, 2008 4:32 PM | Report abuse

So why didn't the police drive him, as the Capitol Police drove home the drunk DEMOCRAT Patrick Kennedy? Clearly a case of Kennedy favoritism!

Knee-walking drunk? .17? Get real. Your knee-capping lies defy accruacy in reporting.

the kenneys have been drunk for 20 years, and they are leaders of the Democrats.
Lets get him re-elected,and he will rise to the top.

I looked through this clown's apology and saw nothing about the possible death and destruction he might have caused.
Many people like to drink and its a damn good thing that most of us have the judgement not to attempt driving in an inebriated state.
We have the usual idiots trying like hell to make this a partisan issue when it really only reflects on the perpetrator. Yes, we have a----les in both parties and the startling thing is they all manage to get elected by idiots who think that one or the other party is immoral and full of drunks.
To paraphrase an adage, drunks will be sober on the following day but idiots will remain idiots, which is fine but they also vote!

Unlike a kennedy, any of them, he didn't hit anyone or anything. Even though he appeared dead drunk at the bar, they still served him. Driving after drinking is something almost everyone has done at least once in their life. It one of those stupid things that most people live through and don't get caught or they don't and do get caught. Think of all the dumb things you have done that got others in trouble or dead.

Posted by: LTCSTAN | May 6, 2008 3:22 PM | Report abuse

There seems to be a lot of partisan comments on this board, which I find unnecessary. I'm a Republican, and I think he should resign. I also think any elected Democrat found driving under the influence should resign. Drunk driving is completely unacceptable, regardless of party affiliation.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 6, 2008 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Heck, Edward Kennedy got drunk, drove off a bridge and left a woman to die after he went back to a hotel and slept it off before calling anyone. And he's re-elected over and over and considered one of the standard bearers of the Democrats. Chris Dodd, his famous drinking buddy (remember the waitress sandwich episode), just ran for President. The list of Democrats involved in scandals who have been re-elected (Frank, Jefferson, etc.) or that get millions for speeches (Clinton) is long and getting longer. At least the Repubs usually resign and get counseling. Dems just run for office again like what they did is a qualification for office.

The BAL is approximately .02 for a beer, shot of liquor or glass of wine. Of course, the actual level depends of the age, gender, weight of the person and his/her tolerance of alcohol. The average person metabolizes a BAL of .02 in approximately one hour. So, if there are any mathematicians out there you can figure out Rep. Fossella consumption prior to his arrest.

We all know that Mary Ann can't do math, but shouldn't the headline be that he was Ted Kennedy Drunk?

Posted by: Newt | May 6, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

According to the New York Post, Congressman Fosella's drinking buddy passed out twice, and then belly flopped so hard on a table at the Logan Tavern that he broke the base of the table.

He and Fosella were asked to leave.

Oh, goodie. Another seat in play!!

this isnt a matter of no harm-no foul..point 17 is a big number--it tells us that this isnt the first time he has driven while legally kwd--he betrayed everybodys trust and society should not look askance regardless of political persuasion. he got caught this time and it will probably be his last for a long time, but he is only going to clean it up because he got caught--not because his judgement or conscience finally kicked in-so kick him out!

To Washington DC...you can't use an average of .02 for everyone. Weight ranges from 100 lbs to 300+ lbs for adults. And it depends how long he was in the bar. It's not about how much he had, but he was definitely feeling tipsy or worse, so he should know better. But I agree with others that he shouldn't resign unless the Kennedy's do. I mean, Sen. Ted left a girl to drown...there is always an air bubble in a car, usually with an hour or so of air. And he just left her...

I live in the 13th District, and Mr. Fossella is my Rep. He was never elected to the House, he was appointed, when another Rep. stepped down. We have been trying to get rid of him of years. He has done absolutely nothing for us, and he's a nasty human being.

The timing could have been better!

To Studio City, CA: Please read my post again, it said: "...the actual level depends on the age, gender, weight of the person and his/her tolerance of alcohol". I thought that was pretty clear, at least for the average person.

kmd, you are the very definition of an idiot. The Constitution of the United States of America and your own sentence "We have been trying to get rid of him of years" show that you have no idea what you are talking about. Please, please, kill yourself.
