Cheney Apologizes for W. Va. Incest Joke

UPDATE: Vice President Dick Cheney has apologized through his spokeswoman for making an offhand joke during a speech at the National Press Club Monday stereotyping West Virginia as a state prone to incest.

Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride tells us, "The Vice President's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone. On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The Vice President apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark."

Cheney's statement came after West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin added his voice to the chorus of outrage from Mountain State politicians and demanded an apology from the veep.

"I truly cannot believe that any vice president of the United States, regardless of their political affiliation, would make such a derogatory statement about my state or any state for that matter," Machin said in a statement. "West Virginia is home to some of the most patriotic people in the nation and our sons and daughters have answered the call to duty every time a president has needed their service. They deserve better from the vice president, and so I would simply ask for his apology."

And this from Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.): "West Virginians are the hardest working, most decent people I know. Anyone who spends time with them gets it. The Vice President should be more careful about cheap shots aimed at the very people who elected him."

And Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) said, "That a man who has ascended to the seat of vice president of the United States would openly display such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen is an insult to all Americans. Now that he or the administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia."

Did Dick Cheney just hand West Virginia to the Democrats, or what?
'Cause his remark at the National Press Club today is bound to rub plenty of folks in the Mountain State the wrong way, especially those who are sick and tired of hearing West Virginia incest jokes. Already, members of the West Virginia congressional delegation - Republicans and Democrats alike - are ticked off.

Cheney was at the Press Club to congratulate this year's winners of the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency. During a question-and-answer session toward the end of the luncheon, someone asked the vice president about his wife Lynne Cheney's revelation on MSNBC last year that "Dick and Barack Obama are eighth cousins."

The questioner jokingly asked the vice president if he and Obama were going to have a family reunion, to which Cheney replied he would "have no objections" though he said he doubted Obama would want one - "certainly not before November."

Then came the offensive punch line. Cheney explained that during the course of researching his family lineage for Lynne's memoir "Blue Skies, No Fences" last year, he learned there were Cheneys on both his father's and his mother's side of the family. There was a Richard Cheney on his mother's side, the vice president said.

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney quipped.

West Virginia politicians aren't laughing at Cheney's little joke, including his fellow Republican, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.).

"This is exactly the type of stereotyping that we don't need from our elected officials," Capito tells the Sleuth. "It's disrespectful, and it's certainly not funny. The Vice President should know better than to make a remark like this one. We all work hard to further West Virginia's good name, only to have comments like this tarnish it. As a proud state, I can say we are disappointed."

Rep. Nick Rahall
, a 16-term Democratic congressman from West Virginia, was equally as irate. "We may owe the vice president a debt of gratitude for yet another great West Virginia slogan: Dick Cheney is not from here," Rahall told us.

I don't think anyone will notice. This will have zero impact in the election and will blow away by Friday if not tomorrow.

in my "elitist" view (as a person whose father once worked in Moundsville and who spent some time in Wheeling), the people of the mountain state aren't really paying attention anyway. If they haven't yet noticed that Bush's rules allowing mountain topping to mine coal is polluting their water, they probably won't care about a slur that has been around for ages. They made their decision in 2000 and 2004 and they don't seem to want to change. It is sad, really. It is such a beautiful state and the people have always been friendly to me. I am sorry they don't seem to realize that the "Republic Party" thinks of them as mindless drones and easy to finagle. Sad.

I doubt they'll wise up and realize that Republicans haven't been on their side for a *long* time. The state will support the Republicans this time around, too. I think that a lot of the comments about this have been personal attacks about my great state of WVand should be removed. Yes we have poverty and we have rednecks and yes I am sure we have incest but I'm am also sure we are not the only state that does.
I have traveled all over the United States and wouldn't trade my one acre in WV for all the slums and down trodden areas in NYC, Washington DC,and Detroit just to name a few.
So if all you highly educated people especially the ones from N. Va and Dc area thinks our state is so backward stay the heck away from our condo's and ski resorts. Ski down 18th street and see how backward WV is.

Reading through the insults, it will be interesting to see if the WP enforces its own policy, "User reviews and comments that include profanity or personal attacks or other inappropriate comments or material will be removed from the site."

In my 49 years of walking this planet it has been my experience that those who must insult and demean others usually have their own issues and believe they must demean a group so they can feel good about themselves. Here is a hint for you: try to be positive. While it is much more difficult to be positive than negative, at the end of the day you will feel better about yourself.

Cheney Besmirches Virginia to excuse his own dirty family secrets.

The usual NeoConMen trick, accuse an innocent of your very own crime so you muddy the waters.

When NeoConMen speak all I hear is spin, lies and talking points.

McClellan's confesses and Trent Duffy and the rest of the Republicommie NeoConMen all begin parroting the same talking points; like good little apparatchiks in their oh so commie bubble. Hey! George, where are the tractor production figures? For White House read Pravda on the Potomac. America Awaken the Reds are in The White House beds!

The NeoConMen create 10 Trillion Dollars of US Tax Debt with Republicommie Pork subsidies for the likes of Halliburton, Blackwater and KBR and all those other Republicommie companies that went to Iraq to suck on the US TAX TIT. Cheney even gave his bankrupt company the worlds biggest ever Social Security Cheque 8 billion dollars of No Bid Contracts. Then they whine about congress spending a 62 million of Medicaid for the USA's poor.

Cheney's dirty family secret comes out and he hides behind a smear on Virginia. If a US Ambassador has served the Nation for decades and he says the intelligence you want to use to lie America into war is wrong then then smear his wife and out her as a CIA agent. Not a thought for others or even the nation. Only the selfish whining of a bunch of commie traitors

But now the American People see the NeoConMen for what they are:

THIEVES, TRAITORS AND LIARS who care only for themselves.

It is time to gather the evidence.

It is time to begin the investigations.

It is time for the American people to have their revenge.

We can see the signs as the traitorous rats savage each other in desperate search for a way out of their sinking ship.

The prosecutors should only let the first to rat on the others have immunity.

Soon Bush will be out of power and can no longer issue pardons.

Then the American People can have their revenge as a dish of Cold Hard Justice.

The Day of Reckoning is coming.

My brother-in-law Warren W Burnett a former Police Officer here in the Monsey NY area of Ramapo Township NYS once quoted himself as saying " I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken." How true he was.
While this might be true if it were a game the real reason the VP is making unregarded remarks these days is that he's being chased down by the likes of those he will know longer support because they have lied to him.
So before they get him I'll spill the beans here.
The Vice President of The United States of America Dick Cheney and Family are hipper then the whole President Gerald Ford Family put together. The VP and his family have put them to shame. Betty Ford's breast cancer candidness and her remarks about her childrens pre-marital sex and marijuana use is nothing to what is going around in my neighborhood. It seems that Mr Cheney has aritficially impregnated his daughter Mary's wife Heather Poe in order to bear Mrs and Mrs Poe and Cheney an heir unto themselves. Cool? What a grandfather. My friends are even thinking about voting for Senator McCain.
Lowell Cheney is about the luckiest guy on Earth right now. On May 23 2008 the little future star of whatever he wants to be had his first birthday.
You can read his birth announcement in the NYTimes on May 23 2007 in the article about Governor Corzine of NJ.
Look in the article for the words "circles followed by the word "circle" followed by the name Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
What's this about? The whole thing was recorded in a cryptogram which ended with the VP's grandson's birth that day. The newest Cheney was supposed to received a SSA# starting with 101. This is an abbreviation for AKA or also known as. Fortunately supporters of Lowell himself like me dePaul Consiglio the origainal 101 SSA# holder interupted this whole thing by holding the line as they say and confused the whole article. The word circle between circles and Clinton ended the possibility of adding the digits 964814 spelling out RODHAM after 101 in order to circle out of office Senator Clinton. This was not another Dirty Trick by CREEP. This was the democrats trying to put the name CHENEY written as 38557 after 101 in order to influence and listen in on Republican Party goings on. But it wasn't Senator Clinton's people that did it. It was Senator Obama's ourtermost circle that tried to do it. The are so cock sure of themselves this year that they had to guarantee it even going to the extent of catching the Cheney Family in the act of Conception. So as it goes the Vice President has been sometimes finding himself having to defend his remarks and whereabouts and accidents during hunting trips or slipping up about incest.
This is unfortunate for him and for the Clinton and Obama camps.
If the number was issued like a few before those that hold them unfortunatly could become very disabled by the numbers issuance. Why? It's unAmerican that's why.
Take it from me I have nothing because of my number 101423386. I've even written to my repesentatives for an explanation but they refuse to even answer after I've explained.
I know the US being a democracy this year and not a republic went about doing a circle on The Cheneys. They did a circle on me and convinced everyone I was wrong until now I have nothing.
I know it will be different for Lowell. So
remember to send him a birthday card next year. He will be in his "terrible twos".
So make up your mind this year when you vote. I suggesting that you all go out and register to do so . But as for me I'll vote for myself this year until the US Government gives me an explanation.

Those who think this will blow over and be nothing: Maybe you should 1st poll the West Virginians serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe also poll the families of WV soldiers killed there. To have a sitting -- not former or elderly or senile -- VP of the United States of America severely insult one of his own 50 states is outrageous. Not only that, he's not insulting MA or NY or some other way liberal state; this is a state that cast 1000's of votes for him to be VP twice, and is generally quite conservative. I guess deeply insulting 1/50th of the senators over which you preside (as senate tie-breaker) is "family values" in Dick Cheney's mind.

May I remind you, Mr. Cheney, that West Virginians were at least intelligent enough to associate with the North in the Civil War, with the WV counties breaking away from Virginia, something that must have taken a lot of guts to do. Guts that you, Mr. Cheney, didn't have enough of to even serve in Vietnam.

What a total idiot....

Dick and George both cut and ran from VietNam. As Dick put it "He had other things to do" like babysitting. So maybe he should apologize to the family members of those 4,000 plus brave soldiers who he sent to there deaths so he could make money from Haliburton. His stock in a blind trust went from $40,000,000 to $400,000,000. Now he made a lot of money from those brave Men and women from W. Virginia who fought in this fight and died in fight he and George can't finish. Now if don't see the truth and let him get away with this huge crime then you deserve his insults because he is getting away with it at your expense.

I'm from Indiana, where I have "endured" (boohoo!) this trivial banter all my life and it didn't traumatize me one bit. In fact, it instilled in me a sense of pride - in who I am & in the fact that as an American, I can still say these things! As my boy, "Larry the Cable Guy", would say, "I don't care who you are, that's funny right there!"

The real shame is that none of us are allowed to laugh at ourselves anymore in this age of self flagellating so called political correctness. We have enslaved ourselves for no good reason. I remember the Dean Martin roasts of the 1960's before Americans became afraid to laugh at themselves. Shame on all of you. Now we Americans live like the Soviets did during the 1950's---we have to look over both shoulders before we share a joke with a friend. He has broken laws and hurt national security in the Valerie Plame case. He has lined his pockets with the American treasury through Halliburton and made energy policy with his oil buddies all the while ignoring the law and the US Constitution.
He is a war criminal, a criminal on par with Richard Nixon and he will get his just desserts in the end.

When asked about service in Vietnam, Dick Cheney said he "had other priorities at the time". I imagine those who died in that war of non-necessity also had other priorities at the time -- like watching their kids grow up, having grand kids, living out their futures. The privileged got deferments (for college, which was a very privileged pursuit those days), the average Joe died in combat. To have these draft avoiders be todays war-hawks and war-barons is hypocrisy at its worst. But then again, Republicans pound their chests and vote for their ilk with delusional fervor. I wonder if they will do so even after being insulted by them.

I moved to WV from TX and would take WV over TX any day of the week.

Since all of you must read at least some parts of the newspaper, I don't think I should have to spell out for you the implications of my statement regarding TX.

This is especially applicable in light of the state of residence of the utterer of the comment in question, as well as recent events in TX that one can read about on the first page of this fine publication.

To wit, I think it's quite interesting that one who claims TX as his state of residence would have the intestinal fortitude to comment on aberrant sexual practices by specific geographical location.

Posted by: WV rez | June 2, 2008 10:34 PM | Report abuse

The venom and disrespect shown in alot of these comments is exactly what they hope for. The 'us or them' mentality keeps us squabbling about trivial things, unable to reach compromise and understanding, and thwarts the great power of this country - the people's will.

Cheney should apologize - it's what civil people do when they've said something to hurt someone else. It's what a person of integrity would do. It's what my parents taught me and I hope my Grandson will learn.

We need decent leaders and we need to quit hurting each other.

It irks me that people go nuts over something like this and yet pay good money to watch a comedian like Chappelle.

The problem with America isn't that evil men like Cheney exist, it's that thin skinned people exist. If I were a West Virginian, I'd give a polite smile at Dickie and cronies and then vote for an independent. Nothing infuriates politicians more than losing an election because his votes went to a third party. No need for all this PC 1984 speak. Actions will speak loudly enough. ok, if someones family has been in the us for more than say 5 generations, you WILL find were there are cousins that have married. Its a proven fact. Go back to Europe pre 1700 and you will find it even more so. In past times with a smaller population, there were fewer choices for spouses, cousins married all the time, its not as bad as people believe. Its a fact that most people who do genealogy research already know. Also, just because two people have the same last name, doesn't mean they are related, in fact, with most surnames, its about an 85 percent chance that you aren't, or at least not with in 8 generations, which beyond that, it truly doesn't matter, except to genealogist and geneticist.
If you believe in Christianity, Judaism, or Islam, then you by default believe that all humans descend from incestuous relationships. Point being: get over it.

That being said:

When you get to West Virginia, what does the sign say?

Because outsiders dont know us. Nor do they care. Obama, I was going to vote for you until the comments your staff made and the craziness about your church made front page. So, we have a few holyrollers, at least they are honest about it, and don't change their story when confronted or disown their own church to win. We honor our friends, our family's and our country. People, including those from the beautiful state of WV:

Getting married to a COUSIN is not - I repeat NOT - incest!!!! Beyond that, having two people with the same last name doesn't mean they are related!!!! Sheesh!

In other parts of the world, many people would have taken Cheney's comment to mean that everybody in the the area is related to one another, mainly because people traditionally had larger families in the past and the mountainous terrain made it more difficult for people to marry someone from far away.

I agree Cheney's joke was tasteless, and frankly, not particularly funny. I agree that it's especially not funny if you are on the receiving end of it. But at least keep your facts straight.

Frankly, I think incest in WV is much less of a problem than a whole new generation of WVians refusing to vote for someone simply because he is black. To me that shows a disappointing lack of thinking in a people who are otherwise sincere and decent.

It's a pity Cheney wasn't bright enough, or sensitive enough, to come up with a better joke. It's even more of a pity that he couldn't even appologize in person for his pejorative words.

If you're out there criticizing West Virginia, you are doing it out of your own ignorance, a state in which you no doubt repeatedly find yourself. Grow up and look at yourself. If the best you have to offer is to criticize good people, then you indeed have nothing to offer at all.

I pride myself in knowing that I can only be "led" by someone I perecive as being smarter than I am. He sets the bar pretty low, and therfore, could never get my vote of confidence on any level. Stereotypes have been around longer than I have been on this earth. As a Black woman from WV, I've heard more than my fair share. Still, I find comfort in knowing that my parents worked hard to instill a good work ethic and sense of personal and collective responsibility; provide a good education for me; and foster a sincere concern for others. As an observant West Virginian who lived many years in DC, I heard many such remarks. It grew tiresome (like the ignorant posts here), but I wasn't particularly insulted. My grandma always told me that anyone who must put down other people to puff him-/herself up is to be pitied.

Yes, I was mortified by the 2004 election and the recent primary results in WV, but I wasn't especially surprised. The state has a sad history of being conned---first by the timber industry, then (and still now) by King Coal and chemical companies, and often by our own politicians--Republican and Democrat alike.

My Republican neighbor confided to me the other day that he has always mistrusted "colored people," but that he has decided to vote for Obama because "he seems like a good man who wants to do the right thing." He could have been describing himself. Here's a man brave enough to take a chance on something different because he realizes the old ways just aren't working. I hope many of our other neighbors come to the same conclusion.

Just because, as he said, he isn't running for office, doesn't make it appropriate for him to imply that people in West Virginia practice incest. He has shown time and time again that he has no respect for the American people or what they want. He thinks that he and Bush can do what ever they want and the will of the people be damned. If so, no wonder we are having so much violence in our schools. Do you not have any sensibility. You are showing your ignorance. Yes, I am from WV and yes I know I have been insulted.

OK, obama supporters. You have shown your hand. You are taking advantage of Cheney's comment to make west Virginia look stupid, because they voted against your man. And in the process you can make west Virginians angry at the republicans and vote for your man in the general. SHOWS HOW HATEFUL AND DECEITFUL YOU ARE. Reading your comments one would think West Virginia was the only state that voted for Bush. Grow up, and tell your candidate to do the same.

This country is really going downhill, and fast. Jews are being shot and killed for being Jews (Seattle) and synagogues are being torched (Miami). The public unblinkingly accepts Obama's references to "typical white" people and his widespread associations with racist hate-mongers and domestic terrorists. And now it's permissible again to ridicule and humiliate the good people of West Virginia? I guess we're really behind the times here in the Mountain State: Hate isn't fashionable here (yet). All in all, I hope we in WV can remain remote, well removed from the "progress" that is polluting - and ruining - the rest of the country. And in the meantime, I'll see what I can do about changing those signs at entrances to the state, from "Wild and Wonderful West Virginia" to the more simple, good and old-fashioned "KEEP OUT."

Mr. Cheney, you were given a historical vote from the state of WV I'm sure in large part because of our military population. Being a military wife myself I am in disbelief you would be so ignorant to literally bite the hand that fed you. I guess past tense is key here, right? You no longer need our vote; however, the Republican party does and I'd like to personally thank you for blowing that. I've lived all over this great country and have encountered what is perceived to be backward, ignorant people in every state I've resided in. Unfortunately, we're hit with an undeserving stereotype. I'd like to believe what you've said will fade with time but I'm afraid people will remember this come November. You are obviously ignorant and ungrateful. I'm proud to say I'm a Mountaineer. I'm a military wife and proud of my military and my family who has served and today I'm very proud of the fact YOU are not from my home state of West Virginia. I'm sure Mr. Whittington is too.

I don't find the "joke" that offensive, but then again, I'm not a West Virginian. What I do find offensive is Cheney and Bush's hypocrisy. They tout family values yet Cheney makes light of incest, which often results in rape and/or birth defects.

As for Bush, the list goes on and on ... i.e. Bush telling Cheney that NY Times reporter Adam Clymer was "an *sshole" when he didn't realize the mike was on. BUsh refused to apologize. Then there was the video of him sticking his middle finger to reporters. And who can forget him giving an unsolicited massage to German Chancellor Angela Merkel during dinner? Hey Georgie, this was an diplomatic dinner among world leaders, not a hoedown with pals at your ranch. It's known as sexual harrassment. I won't even get into Bush's frat boy days where he had a C- average and majored in booze.

Then there was mom, Barbara Bush, who implied that vice-prez candidate Geraldine Ferraro was a b*tch ("it rhymes with witch"). And of course the Bush daughters with their false IDs, underage drinking and being rude to reporters. COmpare them to the maturity of Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton.

Has there ever been a first family so non-representative of Family Values??? It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't claim to promote it. But as things stand, they are the most hypocritcal First Family of my lifetime. The again, why should I be surprised by the contradiction? After all, Bush calls himself "the Education President" Hahahaha!!! What a joke. A sad sad joke.

Posted by: sdc | June 3, 2008 8:05 AM | Report abuse

RE: the above message about Bush sexually harrassing Germany's first female Chancellor, Angela Merkel, here's a link. Watch poor Merkel's face. Keep in mind that this is the G-8 Summit -- a meeting of the world's most powerful leaders. It is NOT an informal event. The world's press was watching. Furthermore, it was in Russia, not Bush's own country. God, Bush is such an embarrassment. The Europeans have known it for a long time (one German politician called him "an idiot"). Americans have finally realized it too.

Chreney's just doing his bit to normalize the politics of insult. He's pushing the envelope that future candidates will float in. I mean, we are talking about the author of "So?" and yet cruder epithets. This is just Cheney as Dennis Miller. Plenty of yucks in Freeperville. Dick: he's such a card.

It's been a successful right-wing fascist tactic for decades.

Posted by: JMarra | June 3, 2008 8:46 AM | Report abuse

Tasteless remarks under the guise of humor.? Hmm. I wonder if they are just as funny when they are turned on tricky Dick? I have lived in a mobile home, so I'll take his comment as full license to try completely inappropriate jokes that aren't funny, but hey I'm stupid, uneducated and don't known any better right? What's Dick's excuse other than the fact that he sprung from Satan's loins?

Say what you will about Dick Cheney but he has completed one important function as Vice-President: shooting lawyers.

The NRA should be quick to point out that guns don't shoot people. Dick Cheney shoots people.

Inbreeding jokes by elitists go together like Republicans and lesbian daughters.

Hey Dick-are you done raping America yet or do you intend to pay for her services with Halliburton stock at some point? Ha ha. That's funny right there, I don't care who you are.

Posted by: goober | June 3, 2008 8:58 AM | Report abuse

Strangely, if Cheney's comment would have been related to race, gender, or religion, this would have been a big deal. Truthfully, I find the comment offensive because it is generalizing a large group (in this case, a state). Why is it ok to poke fun at the expense of West Virginians?

Some of the abovementioned comments are baffling to me. For the record, this is a topic of conversation in West Virginia today. It may come as a shock to some people that a large portion of the state can: 1) read, 2) comprehend the same things people from other states can, and 3) go to college (and even...gasp...get doctorates). Did you know West Virginians have running water and high speed internet access? Did you know that not every part of the state drives pick up trucks with confederate flags and shops exculsively at Wal-Mart? Of course not, because many of you took the lazy way out and allowed yourself to fall for a stereotype that is not entirely accurate.

I am, in fact, a born-and-raised West Virginian. I went to college, studied abroad in Europe, and managed to obtain two bachelors degrees and a masters by the age of 25 (currently working on my doctorate). My parents are unrelated, highly educated individuals. I am not an anomaly or an isolated incident. Now, I have a job at a relatively prestigious institution on Capitol Hill. Shockingly, those who meet me cannot tell I'm from West Virginia until I point it out to them--which I proudly do. Why? Because while my state has done some stupid things (2000, 2004...) and may not think or act the same as others, they are kind, hardworking, humble people. I can't exactly say the same thing for those I am surrounded by in the DC area.

When you hear the same tired stereotype your entire life, it gets a very old. Put yourself in my shoes, you probably wouldn't find it funny if you were me.

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family ..."

Just to make one thing clear: having members of the same family in both the mother's and father's families is much more likely due to the marriage of cousins than incest (which is the marriage of siblings).

Marriages between first cousins (people with the same grandparents) is legal in about 20 states. Marriages between 2nd cousins (people with the same great grandparents) is legal in all states.

Marriages between 2nd and 3rd (or 4th, 5th, etc.) cousins are very common, especially in rural areas and small towns. Especially if people don't have the opportunity to travel far from home and family. If families stay in one area for a long time, and if they are restricted to marrying people of the same race and religion, then it's very likely that cousins will get married.

Yes, it's a joke on WV. Wow, that's something new.

If everyone looks back in their family history, they will probably find an incident that is suspect (possible incest), as Dick found out here. Let alone that the most famous family in the world has been inbred for years - the royal family.

I am proud to be from West Virginia and I take all of your jokes to mean that you are envious not to take pride in your origins.

That is your problem not mine, you ignorant swines.

Everyone just needs to take a deep breath and move on. The real threat to WV are comments like, "I didn't vote for him 'cuz he's from that other race that we have so much trouble with.", or, "He's a Muslim and I have a problem with that.", or " His name is Hussein and we've had enough of that." All comments from WV democratic voters after the primary.

Let's please get our priorities sorted out.

"We encourage users to analyze, comment on and even challenge's articles, blogs, reviews and multimedia features.

User reviews and comments that include profanity or personal attacks or other inappropriate comments or material will be removed from the site."

Looks like the sleuth should step up on cheney's comments and remove them from the site.

First, i would like to start by saying that as the former Miss West Virginia National Teenager 2007,and as a regualr West Virginia resident, I am HIGHLY offended by the remarks made be Vice President Cheney and most of the others who have posted comments on here-- saying we, as West Virginians, are too stupid to even pick up on it, or "oh it was no joke". And you people wonnder what is wrong with today's world--LOOK AT YOU! You all sterotype bases on a REGION of the country?! Well guess what, I COULD NOT BE MORE PROUD TO BE FROM WEST VIRGINIA! And let me remind you that the men and women in this state are serving FOR YOU oversees. They HAVE served and will CONTINUE to serve everytime needed. It amazes me that people can be so immature, as ADULTS, to continue with these ridiculous comments and insults. You want to see a "hick", go to ANY state, out in the middle of nowhere, and you'll find one. And incase anyone forgot, West Virginia was Virginia at one time...I do not see anyone ragging on Virginia. Someone explain that one to me. I would just like to conclude by saying that some of the nicest, m ost generous people you would EVER meet live in this beautiful state. Some are not as fortunate as others, but even still they would give their last slice of bread to someone in need. I have traveled all through the state and my father's family is from the middle of the state. I have seen it all, and yes, it may be different, but who the hell is in ANY position to joke and make fun of our people's ways?! And the whole incest thing? Come on people, seriously, do you not have anything better to do with your time?
The next time before you go to rag on WV, stop and make sure your own state's clean.
This is the problem with today's world: everyone is so judgemental and we judge a book by its cover before actually reading into it. I pray that one day people are as open-minded and warm and friendly as they once were.

V.P. Cheney must feel absolutely humiliated to be chastized and lectured by Sen. Byrd, an admitted former member of the Ku Klux Klan unanimously elected Exalted Cyclops of his local chapter. Apparently the title was a precursor of the Senator's career long lack of depth perception. Time has rendered him even more humorless.

Guess the washington post doesn't have the guts to print my opinion -- not surprising.

I simply compared the conduct of WV people with that of a certain pseudo celebrity who has done nothing of value except show her ignorance on a reality tv show and her lack of class on a homemade naughty video. I guess that was enough to get me censored.

The difference is that you can make fun of WV because they are a poor state overall. You can't make fun of rich people. Even if their behavior warrants it. Oh well, so much for the first amendment at the washington post. Not that I actually expected they cared about free speech -- but it would have been nice to be pleasantly surprised. "So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney quipped.

Cheney is saying his own family is incestuous. He insults his own family and himself. How is that offensive to Mountaineers? The journalists totally twisted a self-deprecating joke into an insult of West Virginians. Sadly the Mountaineers accepted the press corps' version hook, line, and sinker. Now that's the joke.

It just proves that West Virginians are all a bunch of Homo sapiens.

Dearest Dick:

In light of your recent comments made during a recent National Press Club speech, I personally find your remarks utterly disgusting and downright unacceptable. And you know what, Mr. Richard "DICK" Cheney? Contrary to popular belief, not all people from West Virginia are inbred, and many in our state would and could intelligently mediate my sentiments. Yes, I have heard all the jokes before, and over the years, have even partaken in slinging a few myself. I am from West Virginia, and sometimes one is forced to laugh at oneself for fear of crying. West Virginia, at times, leaves much to be desired, but nonetheless, it is the place I call home. BUT here exists ONE BIG difference: I am NOT the VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Would I expect any more of you? No, but that is besides the point. As I stated, you are in a high position of power, this fact which you obviously and blatantly continue to take as a joke, your comments being completely deplorable. Your attempt at humor was ill-advised, and the fact that you had a "spokeswoman" issue an "apology" exposes the obvious truth that you are an unworldly, vile coward. Do you not have the the time, or more accurately, the courage, to come out and PERSONALLY admit that your comments were inappropriate at best? I didn't think so. I do understand that there exist matters at hand much more important than the issue I address, but your continuing insensitive actions speak volumes towards your incompetence as a public official. In lock-step with your previous response to a question posed by an interviewer regarding the heartfelt view of a majority of the American people, in reference to our severe opposition to the continuing, seemingly endless war in Iraq (Cheney responded, "So?"), that of which exists solely as a business decision for which you continue to be handsomely rewarded monetarily, I further call for your impeachment on the grounds that you, sir, are obviously yourself the direct product of inbreeding. Comments like the aforementioned could only possibly erupt from a human being with such inept social skills as yourself. You make me SICK. If you were looking to further push the buttons of the citizens of American, to symbolically SPIT in the faces of West Virginians, and to further display your complete and unmitigated inadequacies as a Vice President, you have done so. And to think I was so close in surrendering my own personal efforts in the fight to make you held accountable for crimes conducted while in office. You, in one fail swoop, with one more distasteful, revolting, unsophisticated comment, have drummed up an anger in me I have not experienced since yesterday. In response to my outrage, I could imagine you would probably, strike that, most definitely would, respond to my disdain with another insensitive, taunting comment such as "Touched a nerve, eh?", or some other asinine commentary along these lines. And I would continue to not be surprised. You have demonstrated, particularly prevalent over the course of the last few years, that you have no regard toward others and their feelings. There is so much more I could say, concerning the senseless deaths of our honorable soldiers in Iraq, the state of the economy that your administration so gleefully praises as "stronger than ever", and the repugnant, vile stream of propaganda that continues to pour from the encrusted lips of yourself and your minions, but I will leave it at that. We all know how bad the situation is, and we are exhausted. With all this, sir, I respectfully wish upon you one more severe and painful heart attack, only this time, I hope it squeezes the last bit of life force from that fat, bloated head of yours, the life energies which I severely doubt you possessed in the first place. In your defense, I do believe that you do possess a soul, and Lucifer is about to reclaim what is his. Good riddance, DICK, and I hope you enjoy an eternal life in Hell. May a swarm of a billion locusts gnaw the last bits of fat from your stubby, minute fingers as you attempt to pen the lies you will call your legacy in a book deal surely made in Hell.

Sincerely yours,

If this were another more liberal and moneyed state or city being insulted, you can bet there would be much more of an uproar.
Vashti's post (above) briefly recounts the abuses heaped upon the land and people of West Virginia by big money interests as they have wrecked our state. We have a long history of this, inherited from a couple of centuries, and perhaps that is why people think of us as ignorant.
As a general reaction, I think people from West Virginia just ignore such comments as Cheney's, since we are so accustomed to it.

As a proud West Virginian by birth and now a proud Mississippian by the grace of God, I can sympathize with both states which are all too often the victims of untrue, stereotypical jokes. Both states are home to upright, patriotic and intelligent people who don't deserve to be insulted, either by the Vice-president of the United States or the ignorant of any state. However, what's wrong with driving a pickup truck and going to Wal-Mart????

When I heard Cheney's comment, it felt like he had slapped my face. The comment hurt me deeply. I have lost all respect for the man. I held nothing against the man until now. I can tell my grand-children how Cheney was an ignorant vice-president. He better never run for an office and expect West Virginians to vote for him. His nickname, "Dick," describes him perfectly. Oh yeah, and him talking about his genealogy. We know what what his mother was since he is a S - O - B. Yeah, I can say that since I'm not up for re-election.

Hey! give Cheney a break, he said he was sorry. I am sure he talked really slow & used little words so he would be understood by the locals.

Any time that any person makes a generalized statement to support a stereotype it's not funny. Especially when that person is an elected official.

I can see the ignorant commment that Cheney made brought uneducated rats out of the woodwork. Where are those religous compounds that house inbreds.. oh, that's in Texas, and Arizona.
My line of work is in sales, and I find it astounding that people of the United States still think West Virginia's capital is Richmond. Just shows you how uneducated American's are, and how low they stoop to redicule their sister state.

Posted by: Cindy | June 3, 2008 1:37 PM | Report abuse

Cheney's comment neither surprises or angers me. I have no regard for anything he says. I have known for 8 years that he is a jerk and a stooge for Halliburton. What angers me is all the laughter in the background at the press club. These are the people that incense me. They are the ones who think they have to kiss up to politicians and make them feel that that are so clever. Wake up, we put the jerks there!! Why do they intimidate you so? We can also get them out as well--at the polling places. It's too late for him, but there are lots of Senators and Congressmen who are as much to blame as Cheney and Bush. They can be dealt with in November by pushing a tiny button.

Posted by: Judy Garlic | June 3, 2008 1:46 PM | Report abuse

I'm from the great state of West Virginia. West Virginians are not dumb. They are not inbred and these 'jokes' certainly do not go unnoticed. I've traveled the country and the world and I've never met so many hard working, honest, sincere people who are proud to be where they're from as I've met in West Virginia. We are people who, despite all the 'jokes' and all the degrading comments made about us over the years, hold our heads high and continue to say that we're proud to be from West Virginia; as we should. It's a beautiful state with beautiful people. We are not illiterate or politically ignorant. (After all, we have two of the most succesful senators of all time.) We don't have fancy, metropolitan areas or huge skyscrapers towering above over-crowded streets filled with impatient people who are always in a hurry to get somewhere. What we do have is a sense of community, appreciation for the simple and innocent pleasures in life, a respect for the land we live on and the people who live on it, and a strong will to fight for what we have and what we believe in. So say what you will about West Virginia and its people, but at the end of the day, YOU are the one who is ignorant and uneducated. Don't speak about a subject of which you have no knowledge.

Posted by: Tia | June 3, 2008 1:52 PM | Report abuse

Here's my take on this: I've read most of the comments posted. First of all, I'm surprised most of these people even know that West Virginia is a state. I work in telebanking, and every time I talk to people from the west coast and they find out I work in West Virginia, they always ask how far I am from Virginia Beach (about 7 hours driving time, or they had friends in Virginia once-how far am I from Richmond, etc. Second, the incest we get pinned on us occurs in about 3 out of 55 counties. Third, at least we have a lower rate of black teenagers that can't keep it in their pants creating welfare babies than New York, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi. Finally, my take on this comment by Cheney is that he's nothing but a white-livered coward. He could make the insulting statement by himself, yet he hides behind his spokeswoman to make his apology. Come on Mr. Cheney, you need to grow a set and make your apologies the way you made your comments-in person. And while you're at it-make a trip to West Virginia to make your apology-there are a lot of people who would, undoubtedly, like to see you.

Let me preface my comment with the statement that I am NEVER in agreement with Dick Cheney. But enough with the PC already. It was a funny joke.

Posted by: Kevin in Houston | June 3, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

I think West Virginians should unite and file a class action lawsuit against Cheney for defamation. He's getting rich from the oil companies; it's about time he gives back to a state that has seen nothing but hardship and job loss lately.

Posted by: Anon | June 3, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Oh I get it now it's a joke like when we tell one liners about blacks with basketball, chicken and watermelon; Mexicans with yardwork, and the Irish with fighting and drinking!

It sickens me that as an American first anyone would say that Cheney's comments are a joke - perfectly acceptable - and that we should move on. His comments aren't acceptable in any public office in the U.S. I would blast any public official that were to suggest it, and I think the next person I meet that tells me an incest joke, I'm going to punch out.

Unfortunately, the VP's comments typify the idiot voting population in the rest of America that couldn't find WV on a map and really only cares about who won American Idol. The sad truth is that you're the idiots.

It's a shame the country is so divided - I think it's time for a serious revolution.

Posted by: Timothy | June 3, 2008 2:23 PM | Report abuse

You know what makes West Virginian's angry? Illiteracy. It's spelled 'miscegenation.' Byrd is not a racist. Maybe he was when he was younger when he was told that was right. He grew up in a different time. Have you never made a mistake? He's certainly not a bigot now, today, which is what matters - the present. He's apologized and admitted his mistake. In fact, he's said the kkk was the 'biggest mistake' he's ever made. He was in his early twenties and completely impressionable. He's an old, intelligent, passionate man now...who, by the way, has endorsed Obama.

I just wanted everyone to know that it is legal for 1st cousins to get married in Maryland and Virginia. However it is not allowed in West Virginia. So to me it sounds like MD and VA have a very shallow gene pool. Most of the follish remarks on this thread prove my case. Remeber what was once said about rocks and glass houses.

Posted by: Andrew | June 3, 2008 2:43 PM | Report abuse

Several people have jumped to the conclusion that because Dick Cheney had Cheney ancestors from two lines, his forebears must have committed incest. Not so: Even if the Cheneys on both sides sprang from a common ancestor, it was so many generations earlier that it could not remotely be considered incest. Cheney's paternal ancesters, after settling in America, migrated by stages across the northern United States eventually to Wyoming, while the other Cheneys that Lynne Cheney discovered were a Maryland family that migrated to the United States in the 1600s. So that's maybe 250 years -- 10 generations -- before the two Cheney lines met and merged in the persons of Dick Cheney's grandparents. Therefore, if the two lines were from two brothers that migrated from England to widely separated parts of America, the grandparents of Cheney would have been about 10th cousins.

He'll do well to appologize as he should, as for the rest of the comments found on here, they're disgraceful. WV voted Republican that last two times because dems run uber-libs disguised dems. The people of WV aren't interested in San Francisco values, and therefore vote republican. However, I find it offensive and appalling that an elected leader in such a high-profile role, would use such a stupid, stereotypical, untruth to get a laugh. Umm, yeah, I'm sure that all of the West Virginians who voted for Bush/Cheney twice REALLY thought that the Republicans hated them and wouldn't do anything for their state, I mean, that's why you would vote for a president and vice president, right? And I'm also sure that they thought VP Cheney would make a stupid remark like that about WV someday, right? Contrary to what some of you may think, West Virginians are concerned about their state, are informed about politics, and know who they want to represent them. Also, they've consistently had Democratic governors, and I think they're waiting for a decent Democratic candidate to vote for again for president. Of course, I wouldn't expect some of the types of people who made postings here to understand that. Does it make you feel better to belittle and disrespect others? Please seek help for your own insecurities. Seriously, why don't you all just let WV be upset about the comment? Why do you care anyway, if you're not from the state? Obviously most of you have your very true, and I'm sure, researched "opinions" set about WV anyway, so just leave them alone. I don't think most West Virginians are upset because the comment was from Dick Cheney...I think that they are mostly upset because they are tired of hearing the same old, ignorant remarks from people who have no idea what the state is about (including a lot of the people in these postings)and then have to deal with other ignorant remarks again and again until this blows over.

Cheney should not be concerned about the sexual preferences of us folks from West Virginia. The patriarch Jacob married his two first cousins Leah and Rachel in the Old Testament. What Cheney SHOULD be concerned about is that his own daughter Mary Cheney is following the homosexual/ lesbian path of Sodom and Gomorrah, and THAT is a sin. And I hear that Mary Cheney has a little bastard child, ie, a child born out of wedlock. Deuteronomy 23:2 says that a bastard shall not enter into the presence of the Lord, even unto the tenth generation. Think that over Darth Vader.

I know in history that Bush/Cheney will go down as failures, and they have ruined our countries name all over the world, they are making fun of us just as you all make fun of WV, so to the World we are one big joke, funny isn't it..

The depth of ignorance here is almost not worth commenting on, but I'll use small words so that the non West Virginians in the group can understand.

Knowing someone who works in the social work field, without exception, incest and sexual abuse transcends race, religion and socio-economic lines. Cheney didn't just insult (yawn) WV, but made light of an issue no one wants to talk about or even believe is a real problem.

In short, Cheney took at cheap and I should say worn-out shot at the Mountain State. Believe me, we have thick skin living here in this natural paradise; although Cheney and the coal companies are rapidly trying to destroy all that.

And, I'll put the talent and brains of West Virginians up against anyone. Our list of luminaries includes professionals in all fields, including Hollywood and sadly, Capitol Hill-where page boys are nervous.

I am from West Virginia but have lived in many different places over the course of my life. There is no place I would choose over West Virginia.

Being unable to distinguish between the great people of West Virginia treating each other like family and actuall being family by blood is a sure sign of ignorance.

I am sure that anyone on this site making the stupid comments about West Virginia would find that most people in West Virginia have more education and common sense than you do.

Thank God that you people are not from West Virginia. That would be the true shame! I am so proud to say you are not from my home state!

Lets be real here. No one was seriously offended. It's just another little opportunity to demean a Republican, which liberals do very well. Bird probably needed someone to explain the joke before his staff wrote a response for him.

I think that those of you commenting that the joke was funny and WVians should "lighten up" should be ashamed of yourselves. West Virginians are hardworking Americans who deserve some respect. You wouldn't have half the electricity your computers are running on right now if it wasn't for WV coal miners. I'm sure that even if you live in a state other than WV that you have poverty and whole other slew of problems that WV doesn't have to deal with.

West Virginians ARE smart enough to know when they've been slapped in the face. At least in WV we have manners and know better than to make such terrible jokes at the expense of others.

No wonder he has a passion for, if not anonymity, surreptitiousness.

As I read the comments above, I was diappointed to see that many people thought it was appropriate to make a hurtful joke about another human being. I was born in WV and have lived here all of my life. I have also traveled to at least half of the states in the United State, visited Europe a few times, along with Canada and Mexico and I was always glad to see the beautiful hills of WV when I returned. The people in WV are kind, loving, and generous people who are always will to lend a helping hand to strangers as well as friends and family.

WV is a beautiful state with spectacular parks, rivers, and forests. It provides camping resorts, great skiing, some of the best white water rafting experiences in the country, and The Greenbrier resort which has hosted presidents and other famous people for over a hundred years. WV has many great universities and colleges--WVU won the Fiesta Bowl last fall.

Many famous people have come from WV such as Anna Jarvis(Mother's Day founder), Pearl S. Buck (author), Chuck Yeager(the first person to break the sound barrier), Stonewall Jackson (general), Jennifer Garner (actress married to Ben Afleck), John Corbet (actor) and many, many more!

It is very easy to condemn something about which one has no first hand knowledge. I invite you to visit our beautiful state, but come with an open mind and a willingness to look for the good in everyone.

I would just like to say that I'm from WV and I don't believe I have ever met anyone on this post. Correct me if I am wrong but if you have never met me then how do you know what I am like? Everyone is stereotyping people from WV and for some reason this is OK. I guess because you didn't mention our skin color or religion that it is ok to belittle us. I am sorry but that is WRONG. Since when is it funny to hurt someone else's feelings? I have personally never known anyone married to their brother/sister/cousin. However I do know that incest happens in every state. If you don't believe me just pick up the newspaper. There is always a story about an uncle or father molesting their loved ones. As for the person who wanted to know what % of people from WV had ever been to Iraq.... a h#ll of alot of them just look up our boys who are serving their country. As for Sen. Byrd yes he was involved with the KKK but he also has repented and apologized on numberous occassions. Have you never done something you regret? He did have the gumption to apologize himself instead of asking someone else to do it for him.
As for the person commenting on our slogan it is no longer "Open for Business" which tells how long it's been since you've been here.
As for it ruining the Rep's chances here in November, I believe you are wrong. You see we won't take one man's ignorance and hold the whole Rep. party accountable for it... unlike alot of you. Obama signed his fate here when he decided we weren't important enough for him to campaign for. I am a PROUD WEST VIRGINIAN..... I can read, I can write, I can tell right from wrong, and I can tell Mr. DICK Cheney where to go!!!!!!!

I'm betting you don't get out much because, if you did, you would know that you are very stupid and a poor excuse for a human being! I guess some people just like to blow themselves up by making fun of others. You know, that's what happened to Jesus.....people mocked him, scoffed at him, tried to make him feel you know where they probably are right now?

Many people make fun of West Virginians, but anybody who is anybody loves this state. The people are warm, the mountains are beautiful, and we have a little piece of heaven right here on top of those mountains. God blessed this place and it is a wonderful place to be. People have tried to destroy our egos, make us feel unworthy to be in the same room as them. NOBODY BUT NOBODY has any right to say anything about the people here. They are the best people I know!!!

This is what John Denver thought!!! Heaven!!!!!

On a pleasant, short-sleeved afternoon in Morgantown, W.Va, under a brilliant, almost cloudless sky, a shaggy-haired, bespectacled John Denver ambled toward the 50-yard line to, in effect, christen the new 50,000-seat Mountaineer Field, home of West Virginia football team. It was September 6, 1980, and the university wanted to do something special to introduce both its new stadium and a young first-year WVU coach named Don Nehlen. So Denver was invited to sing one of his signature songs - "Country Roads" - during pre game festivities. Denver, who died in 1997, accepted the invitation apparently under the impression that he would perform a quick novelty gig - hop off his helicopter, take an escorted ride into the stadium, sing "Country Roads" and then bail out. But that's not exactly what happened. Denver entered the stadium and found his microphone at the center of the
field, amidst the 325-member Mountaineer Band, which around him had formed an outline of the state of West Virginia. Then as he crooned the opening lyrics -"Almost heaven, West Virginia" - Denver was joined by about 50,000 backup singers.
Those who were there say the crowd's collective voice swelled to a climax at
the conclusion: "Country roads, take me home, to a place where I belong. West
Virginia, Mountain Momma. Take me home, country roads". Those attending also say that when Denver finished his song, he gazed in all directions - perhaps dumbfounded at the reaction. Some among the crowd wept. Most just cheered for a long time. "I'm pretty sure he had no idea what that song means to this state," said Dan Miller, an executive with the West Virginia Coal Association and an
unofficial Mountaineer football historian. "I was stationed in Germany in
1971 the first time I heard 'Country Roads,' and I'm not ashamed to say that
while I was listening I started crying," Miller said. "It means a lot when
you come from a place that most people don't appreciate or understand. And
here's someone singing about its beauty."
West Virginians, you see, feel they're underdogs - almost always fighting an
uphill battle. Economists tell West Virginians it's tough for their state to
prosper, because the mountains are so steep and rugged that land development
is a challenge. Educators used to say it was tough for many West Virginia children to get ahead because transportation to schools was difficult and winters are harsh. In the sports realm, there annually aren't many young top-tier athletes in
the state, in part because most schools are small and competition is not as
daunting as in denser population areas. There are, of course, exceptions - many of them. Native West Virginia athletes include Jerry West (basketball), John Kruk
(baseball) and Mary Lou Retton (gymnastics). Author Pearl Buck was a West
Virginian; so was Tuskegee Institute founder Booker T. Washington. Nobel
Prize winning mathematician John Nash was from West Virginia. So is country
singer Brad Paisley. Actor Don Knotts was from the Mountain State, as is actress Jennifer Garner, who still speaks fondly of the "hillers" and "creekers" from her alma mater, George Washington High School in Charleston. Most have spoken of both loving life, and overcoming tough
times, in West Virginia. So when Denver sang about Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River, it doesn't matter to most West Virginians that the Blue Ridge is primarily a Virginia-North Carolina strand and the Shenandoah runs only a few miles through their state's Eastern Panhandle. To people who have lived their
lives fighting uphill battles, hearing someone tell them their home is "almost heaven" was more than music to their ears.
West Virginians love their state. "Wild Wonderful West Virginia " is a small
part of HEAVEN.

Coal was put here by God to be dug up and used. Do some might actually get a brain! And I'm sure you'll be jumping up and down cheering when, engineers from West Virginia along with Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennesse and Virginia, coal is turned into fuel and lowers the price of oil. And, I don't think 8 months is a long time to not have noticed that it changed, especially since all of the welcome road signs still say Open for Business. It changed back in October, right, Proud? But, please correct us ALL if that is not right. Also, how do you know that Jesseko isn't from WV? Have you ever met him? Do you know what he's like? Just as those above have stated, when is it right to go on national TV and make an insuation about a whole group of people and make a hurtful statement like that.....especially an elected leader? For people to say we go nuts over our state, you bet we do.......WE have every right to. Are you not proud of where you come from? Evidentaly not!! But I bet people would have been offended if Cheney would have come on TV and said that California is full of nympho-homicidal maniacs who sit around by their pool eating bon-bons all day contemplating their next rape or their next murder or that people from up Chicago are nothing but gangbangers (which by the way rape and molest their own children, sisters, aunts, mothers----isn't that incest?) and gang members, and people from Georgia, Arkansas, and Mississipi are slow because they might talk that way. Has nothing to do with the people they really. It's not true, but he could have said it. I have met people from everywhere and I try to see the good in everybody. It would make anybody want to stand up for themselves. We hear it so often, it just gets tiresome. We shouldn't have to defend ourselves. Does it not say in the Bible....Judge not, lest ye be judged? Well people, get ready because God is going to ask you about it and you will answer for it with hundreds of thousands of people who love this state and the people in it right behind you waiting for the same answer. Do you want to face that? We are God-fearing people who work hard and do not take much for granted. We have had to work and work hard for what he have. As for West Virginias judging the Republican party on 2 complete idiots, one of whom doesn't know the difference between a human and an animal when he shoots at it, we will not because we are not stereotypical windbags who make assumptions about other people based on nothing but stupid comments from ignorant people who don't have the sense God gave them to get out of the rain and just out and out lies. Do you know me, my family, my friends, my work colleages. I think not so shut your pie hole! Dick Cheney's words were as misguided as his shotgun the day he shot the man in the woods. What an idiot. Dick Cheney and anybody who supports him in his comment can pretty much kiss our Mountaineer, Fieta-Bowl winning asses. You mean are nothing!!!

Regarding my previous comment, I have met people from all over, almost every state in the Union just about working in the medical field, and I have met people of different nationalities. You have to get to know people before you make assumptions about them or a whole group of people for that matter, so when I made the comment about Dickie boy could have said about other Americans, I just meant please walk a mile in our shoes. I don't believe those things at all!! I don't pass judgments on people! I thank everybody who is not from West Virginia for sticking up for us. It is high time we banded together as Americans and we all appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts.

HeavenWV--WOW, I don't even know where to start. PLEASE, PLEASE do not be the representative for WV. You are one of the reasons why the stereotypes are out there. I mean, are you really comparing yourself or anyone else in WV to Jesus? And do you really think ANYONE cares about what happened on Mountaineer Field 28 years ago, except for Mountaineer fans, but really, no one else cares. I kind of understand what you're "trying" to say, but really, lighten up on the drama and the religion. You are definitely not the one to speak for God, and it's not up to you to "judge" or decide anyone else's fate. Seriously, I'm from WV, and I DO NOT want you to speak for me, and I'm sure there are a million others in the state who do not want your representation either. I don't even know why I read your ramblings, other than it was kind of like a car wreck--you don't want to look, but you can't help it. I just hope if others read your "thoughts" that they will not make a generalization about all West Virginians. One more thing...if God put coal in WV, do you think He wanted it to pollute the waters that He also created. I mean, you just don't make any sense. Lower power bills...then pollution is o.k, then, right? Think about it...

I was visiting Myrtle Beach, SC several years ago from another state of course, Augusta, GA. I had a flat tire. People were passing by and passing by but nobody was stopping. I was getting nervous because I was supposed to meet friends at a restaurant as I was running late and they had to leave without me, and cell phones were a rare comodity at that time, and I was a little scared too. I was afraid I would not be able to get to them in time with no way to reach them. I tried to call the wrecker service with no luck as it was 9:00 p.m. Nobody was answering. All of a sudden, a truck appeared behind me and all I could see on the front of the truck was what appeared to a be a coal miner on a license plate on the front of the truck, a beautiful Dodge Ram. I thought, Uh Oh, this could get interesting. I got back in my car because I was a little afraid. Two men walked up to my car and asked me what seemed to be the trouble. I told them that I had a flat, my window barely cracked, just enough for them to hear me. A girl can't be too careful these days. They asked me to pop my trunk, which I did, and they got the tire out and started changing my tire for me. I was just relieved it was getting fixed and I was going to be able to get with my friends, digging in my purse to find some cash to give them. I finally got out of the car....they were nice enough to change my tire after all, and I asked them how much I owed them. Their words to me were....."Nothing.....I just hated to see such a pretty lady stranded on the side of the highway and nobody stopping to help her. It was our pleasure and we just hope you get where you are going safely and have a good time. They offered to follow me to where I was going just to make sure I had no problems." I thanked them immensely but told them I would be okay and I appreciated it. When they pulled out and I got behind them, the license plate caught my eye....West Virginia Wild and Wonderful.......Wonderful is exactly right.

I understand some ignorant statements coming from people that don't have Appalachian roots. However what makes me mad is that other people from Appalachia would make derrogatory comments about West Virginia. I am proud of West Virginia even though I have never lived in the state. They are the only truly Appalachian mountain state. Some people made fun of Kentuckians, Tennesseans or a variety of mountain states. I got news for anyone with Appalachian roots if they will make fun of West Virginia they will make fun of you when you are out of hearing distance. Appalachian citizens unite we must not continue criticizing each other but instead stand up for each other. I have lived in many parts of the country and no it isn't just these few ignorant folks saying these things it is many millions just like them. For the future of our children please stand up and defend our selves not through violence but by intelligence, just as most of our Appalachian ancestors stood up for the union during the civil war and was very instrumental in ending slavery. We must defend ourselves and not allow our leaders and the media to continue to downgrade our people. Stand up Appalachians were ever we are or our children will forever be condemned to poverty.

I'm not sure why people are saying this is justifiable because it's funny or not--THAT ISN'T THE POINT.

the point is that the Vice President of the United States made such an ignorant comment about a state full of people who (unfortunately) elected him...

It's called being POLITICALLY CORRECT; something politicians are expected to do and dick has clearly failed miserably at here

it's one thing for someone to make an inbred joke about WV in passing, that's one thing; hell, west virginians ourselves do it sometimes.
the Vice President shouldn't have said it, BECAUSE he's the Vice President.

I made phone calls, several I might add, to the local wrecker service. They must have been out or answer. I thought all hope had been lost until I saw this really nice truck pull up behind me after many, many cars had passed me by. On the front of the truck was a license plate with a coal miner on it. I thought, Uh Oh, this could get interesting. Those were the days before I knew better that is. I got back in my car, locked the doors, and barely rolled down the window. The 2 men walked up to my car and asked me what the trouble was. I told them I had a flat and they asked me to pop my trunk. I was so nervous my knees were shaking.....who where these men and what did they want from me? I sat there in my car waiting for the worst to happen when I felt my car being jacked up....They were fixing my flat of course! I started digging around in my purse to look for some cash to give them. They were finished and I got out of the car. I was still a little hesitant, but I asked them how much I owed them. Their response....."Nothing....I just hated to see a pretty lady on the side of the road trying to wave somebody down and nobody stopping......We just hope you get where you are going safely and that you have a great time this evening." I was dumbfounded.....I just couldn't believe these guys were trying to pick me up or beat me and rape me and leave me for dead. They asked if they could follow me just to make sure I got where I needed to go, and I told them No thanks......They pulled out first and I got behind them. I glanced at the license plate to see where these nice guys were from and low and behold, they were from Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. Wonderful is absolutely right and just as generous and kind as they could be.

We all have problems in our states with different things. Is it really necessary to bash such kind and caring people who haven't done anything to anybody?

Okay, seriously, you're just.....well, I'll be nice. Try's really a wonderful feeling! I am not trying to push anything on anyone, and I don't think I was trying to speak for all West Virginians, but I think I can say that those of us who love this state thank those who united with us and stood up for us. You don't like what I wrote, don't read it! It's pretty simple. I have every right to say what I want, when I want, and where I want....I think our founding fathers put that in our Constitution. Let me guess, you don't know about freedom of speech? Didn't study it? Well, look it up! And, who do you think you are telling me anything? I suppose you are the smartest person alive? Think again. People, unlike you, who love this state and everything and everyone in it, regardless of where they come from or what they are about or what they do, would agree with me when I said people have to answer for what they do. It is stated clearly we are not to judge each other. Nobody is perfect even though I know you think you are.

I am very angry at how West Virginians get treated and how our coal miners, who go out there and bust their butts everyday just to feed their families, get ridiculed for the work they do. I'm pretty sure you don't object to their tax dollars paying for schools, colleges, roads, and probably the mental disability check you're on, etc. I guess you are one of those idiots who thinks your power comes from the poles outside your house, huh?

I live in WV and I don't really care about Cheney's joke. I mean hopefully most people are smart enough to realize that it was a joke. It still makes kinda pisses me off though. I just get mad when ppl say that WVians are stupid. I've lived in WV all my life and I'm pretty frickin' smart. My IQ is like 1 frickin' 66. I just think it's crazy that people think WVians are stupid. I really don't understand why. It really angers me. Is it the accent? No it can't be that because a lot of really smart ppl are from other countries and have accents. I guess the stereotypes started a long time ago and just stuck and I've never seen them growing up in the last 20 years or my parents in the last 40 or my grandparents in the last 60.

I like republicans. I'll agree that our economy is pretty messed up but I'd blame it on the state being a blue state, outside of presidential elections, for the last 100 years. Yeah I'd definitely blame it on that.

There are many states with a higher unemployment rate than West Virginia, including North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Nevada, Illinois, Ohio and Rhode Island to name a few. There are more. I would bet that most of the people making derogatory comments on here are from one of those states and unemployed themselves therefore not up to date on current events and statistics.

Cheney took a cheap shot at West Virginia, but he didn't mention the circling of he wagon around its beleagured Univesity president. An unearned graduate degree was awarded to Heather Bresch, Governor Manchin's daughter and an exec in Mylan hamaceuticals. Garrison - who reported to Bresch in a previous job - refuses to resign, although several others have resigned or been re-assigned (at their same pay rate) The Board hs efused to ask for Garrisons resignation.

The reason Cheney wouldn't want to comment on this sort of thing is the old saw, "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

Better to take a cheap shot than risk a boomerang. (g)

CHENEY IS IGNORANT. To put someone down is an attempt to make a person feel superior! It only proves their ignorance to the listener! I have a neighbor in the South who moved here from Brooklyn. She invited me in for coffee and after friendly conversation she proceeded to tell me "you're pretty smart for a Southerner". I looked at her and she truly thought she was complimenting me! Such ignorance!! I have no use for ignorant people! The people in the South are real genuine people who don't put on "airs" for the most part! I was born in the South and live in the South. Would not want to live anywhere else!

The following is from an article By Juliet Lapidos for

How'd West Virginia get a reputation for inbreeding?

Exaggeration-prone outsiders. In the 1880s and 1890s, writers such as Mary Noailles Murfree and John Fox Jr. traveled across Appalachia, looking for "local color," and overstated the degree to which mountain populations lived in isolation. During the same time period, missionaries reported pervasive ignorance and poverty, with large families living together in ramshackle cabins. The notion of widespread inbreeding was at least in part the result of crude assumptions about how these isolated forest people might have been perpetuating their communities.

It's true that, through the 19th century, transportation networks developed slowly in the rugged, westernmost portion of Virginia (incorporated as West Virginia in 1863). The area was never entirely cut off, but many people lived in remote "closed communities" with little incoming or outgoing migration. Research on intrafamilial marriage in such enclaves is slim. In 1980, anthropologist Robert Tincher published a study titled "Night Comes to the Chromosomes: Inbreeding and Population Genetics in Southern Appalachia," based on 140 years' worth of marriage records. He concluded that "inbreeding levels in Appalachia ... [are neither] unique [n]or particularly common to the region, when compared with those reported for populations elsewhere or at earlier periods in American history."

Stereotypes about West Virginian breeding practices have long been linked to the state's poverty. When Eleanor Roosevelt visited West Virginia mining towns in the 1930s, national newspapers ran pictures of rundown shacks and barefoot kids in rags, which left a lasting impression of the state as a backwater. West Virginians became the prototypical "hillbillies," and incest served as a crude "scientific" explanation for their downtrodden social condition.

In more recent memory, the 2003 film Wrong Turn helped perpetuate the inbreeding stereotype. Set in West Virginia, it features cannibalistic mountain men, horribly disfigured from generations of incest. Then, in 2004, Abercrombie & Fitch released a T-shirt emblazoned with a map of the Appalachian state and the words "It's all relative in West Virginia." In February, a casting director for the upcoming thriller Shelter put out a call for extras with "unusual body shapes, [and] even physical abnormalities" to depict West Virginia mountain people.

For the record, West Virginia has strict anti-incest laws. Only adopted cousins are allowed to marry, while in Vermont, Virginia, and a handful of other states, first cousins can tie the knot.

Although not a native (I was born in Vermont, is that Yankee enough for you?), I am very proud to be a West Virginian. The people in my rural county are overwhelming hard-working, honest, helpful, high-minded, patriotic, etc. I'm really NOT kidding when I recite the litany of praise for my WV neighbors. Nobody is perfect, us West Virginians included, but I much prefer the company around me here than I would to most of the people at the center of power in this horribly failed administration.

That Cheney, the (politically-speaking, anyway) prince of darkness, should condescend in this way, is not too much of a surprise. He is (quite apparently) the author of our failed Iraq policy, of torture as interrogation, of the crassest political gamemanship, and of much else that we should be ashamed of, that his needing to make fun of West Virginia is simply consistent behavior for him. He kids about being called Darth Vader. Darth Vader is virtuous by comparison.

As some of my neighbors would say, Dick Cheney can go push a chain!

What I said was "tells how long since you've been here". Which has more than one meaning. My meaning was in Heart. Which is besides the point because he also stated "What was wrong with Wild, Wonderful as if he didn't know it had changed. Yes it did change in October and seeing how it was all over the news you would think by June he would have noticed it. As for the signs not all of them still say "Open for Business". If you don't give 2 sh%t's about the slogan then why take the time to blog? As for making fun of him I never once said anything to belittle him. I simply pointed out that he was wrong. I did not attack his person nor his traits as I do not know them. Unlike you who had to be childish and put in the "kid in school" remark. I assure you that I was indeed very well liked in school as I am today. What would that matter anyway we are all grown now anyway.... well most of us. I did notice that of all the fine points I brought to light in my previous blog you only picked up on the slogan. I wonder why?

My second post in response to this article (please bear with me . . .)

Having previously praised my fellow West Virginians for their many admirable and conspicuous virtues, I will admit to my frustration that they have twice voted for Dubya and Dicky and that contemptible bunch. It is true that the majority of West Virginians seem disposed to vote against their own self-interest (and, simultaneously, against our collective, national interest). I must point out, however, that that doesn't make them any different from persons in any other so-called "red states." So to attribute the political misjudgment of voting for Bush-Cheney to some unique West Virginian form of ignorance is plainly stupid, not to mention insulting. Are the people in Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, and all the other red states afflicted by some superior form of stupidity which makes their political decisions acceptable (if lamentable) while West Virginia's identical collective decision is attributable to our genetic and cultural inferiority????? Puh-leeze!

Two parting shots:
1) Those of you who are quick to insult us would be well-advised both to reconsider your prejudices and to visit our beautiful state and friendly people; and
2) Dick Cheney can STILL go push a chain!

I just spent about three months in Huntington, West Virginia with one of the biggest names in that state. He was born and raised in the state, pulled himself out of poverty and into millions of dollars. He told some of the coarsest incest jokes about WV ever!

West Virginians joke about incest in WV all the time! I'm not sure I have met a person from or who has been to West Virginia who DIDN'T mention incest with a sly grin!

Silly people. It's almost a matter of pride in WV, like homosexuals in San Francisco! In all likelihood, Cheney just WON some extra votes!

I am weary of defending West Virginia simply because it seems like somewhat of at least a small justification of this comment's merit or influence. However, the truth is that I'm sure there are isolated cases of incest in West Virginia. If there are, there are no doubt similar isolated incidents in every other state in the country. Generalizations, even in joking form, are exactly what a seasoned politician like the Vice President should know better than. It is so easy to generalize, to judge from what little we know about a people or a place, but the truth is that we are all people. West Virginians are Americans. Perhaps some are isolated, poor, uneducated, or just different, but they are people. I won't pretend that being from West Virginia or another region of Appalachia garners prejudices that rival racism or hate crimes. However, perhaps it is time to stop and think of West Virginia (which is a state in which jobs are declining and young people are migrating out of and which seems to consistently fall at the bottom of the good lists and at the top of all of the bad lists) as a state that is ripe with potential and in need of people committed to its worth. I suppose that what I am saying is that perhaps if politicians stopped making ignorant low brow jokes about this state and committed to improving its conditions, we would all be better for it. In addition, I have lived in West Virginia for 23 years. Its views are indescribable, its tourism incredible, and most of its residents involved and giving. I encourage anyone who hasn't been to hasten to make judgments about a state rich in pride and patriotism. I also hear their university's football team isn't too shabby.
