Father's Day With Larry Craig

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) has a Father's Day message for his children on his web site. The message is: thanks for sticking up for me after that airport sex bust, kids.

In an editorial appearing on his Senate site, Craig celebrates the joys of fatherhood and his 24th year as "Dad to Mike, Jay and Shae."

"Father's Day always has been a time of reflection for Suzanne and me -- to look back fondly on our kids' achievements and to take pride in how they handled life's disappointments. I remember Shae's first date and her first breakup, Mike's first car and Jay's first soccer game," Craig writes. "But nothing affected me as emotionally as my children's love and loyalty during the dark days of last August."

That's when it was revealed that Craig had been arrested two months earlier for allegedly soliciting sex from an undercover police officer in a bathroom in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Craig pleaded guilty and later announced his resignation, but then decided to fight to keep his seat and appeal his conviction -- to no avail.

In his editorial posted today, Craig writes, "When I was under siege by the media, by my political opponents and even by some I thought were my friends, it was my three children who surrendered their privacy and risked being tarred by those demanding my head, to take on their Dad's critics."

In one interview with ABC News last fall, Craig's grown children defended the senator. Son Michael Craig said his dad was "a victim of circumstance, in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Thanking his children for defending him, Craig says, "They were relentless in correcting the record -- in television interviews and in doggedly responding to newspaper reporters' endless questions. And when I appeared before the media to respond to unspeakable accusations, my kids stood with me, looking my accusers squarely in the eye. In the privacy of our home, when I would despair, they were there to lift up their Dad."

So which one of them is going to gift-wrap that rainbow flag for him? And may I suggest a side order of tap shoes.

I am going to keep the Craig family in mind when the subject of who we have to spend Thanksgiving with comes up. Just to keep it all in perspective.
Although The Craigs do get a two turkey head start.

Do you think his children are the only ones he said "Who's your daddy?" to?

craig needs to get a quiet life --- perhaps a prescription for tranquilizers --- and he needs to keep out of public toilets... that's it in a nutshell --- he can have all the fantasies he wants --- just keep them in your head and not in the public eye --- when you look like a duck and sound like a duck...

The Log Cabin Republicans links to the College Republican National Committee who claim to be "Not Gay" and advocate standing firmly behind Bush and White House Spiritual Leader Pastor Ted Haggard "with everything that they've got".

Nearly 150 years after Emancipation the GOP has another chance to choose fairness over discrimination, equality over bigotry, freedom over fear. But they have chosen a higher father: the Idaho Hall of Fame.

The record stands:

Larry Craig pled guilty to Disorderly Conduct.

He was caught soliciting gay sex in an airport bathroom.

The arresting officer said Mrs. Craig was looking through the bathroom door peephole for almost 2 minutes.

This is a sick man, not a leader.

He still votes the party line; to continue the War in Iraq.

The GOP has no integrity and is now a laughing stock over it's previous commitment to family values.
obviously it was a sham and watch now as they turn racist in a desperate attempt to save themselves.

Shine a light on them and see what they are really all about.

Then vote them out of office this November.

...And let's recall that Al Capone's mother was famously quoted as saying: "My Al? He's a good boy."

Larry Craig is a raging HYPOCRITE, a religious fundamentalist violating the constitution's guarantee of the separation of churchand state, a convicted criminal, ...and a father.

Thank you for posting the Senator's message.

As an Idahoan, it has been a difficult couple of decades with Larry. If you check his voting record - almost every vote in his life is the vote of a corporate lobbyist. It has driven me crazy that Idahoans have continued to vote for someone who consistently voted against the welfare of a huge majority of the state's citizens. He's a corporate lobbyist taking money from the citizens his actions are effectively raping.

Oh yeah, the sex thing. Craig's homosexuality was not "new" news. It's been known and apparent and denied for over a decade (probably longer). He's a perfect of example of Republican politics. Scream and rant and rave about the evils in the world that most represent that person. Whether it is being a lier, thief, homosexual, war criminal, terrorist or simply one of a group of entirely corrupt and self-serving Party hardliners.

Who cares whether Craig is a gay man (besides those he hypocritically beat down for also being gay)? What we all should care about is how deep and nasty his deceit, corruption and morally absent deeds and personality really is.

Craig and his ilk may be Americans - but they are unAmerican by nature. Wake up Idaho.
Wake up America.

As a husband of a woman who "came out lesbian" after two decades of marriage, I have now met scores of str8t spouses of gays and all of us know the traumatic hurt that comes with finding out that we have been conscripted into a lifelong lie by a gay spouse. The complications don't begin and end with the marital relationship but extend to children, grandchildren and others.

When a spouse or parent comes out later in life as gay, it is a deeply personal experience for families who have to deal with emotions not unlike those that follow divorce or death. There are overwhelming feelings of anger, bitterness, abandonment, betrayal, sadness, and guilt. The difficulty is often compounded when the gay/bi/whatever spouse continues to lie or "gaslight" the family. What most of us have found over the years, though, is that the little alarm bells ringing in the back of our heads should have been heeded much earlier.

I don't know if Larry Craig is gay, but my study of many scores of mixed orientation marriages is that when there are multiple warning signs (frequenting gay porn sites, getting caught in compromising situations, trigging everyone's gaydar, unusually emotional same-sex relationships, saving oneself for the "right person" even at the age of 25, etc.), chances are good that if your gut is questioning your spouse's sexual orientation, they are gay.

I wish the Craig family well and urge them and others in their situation to demand truth and when it comes seek support from PFLAG, Str8t Spouse Network (SSN), MMOM, etc. Likewise, I would urge the gay spouse to resist the urge to run back into the client and get support as well - PFLAG is a great start.

This guy is a loser, not for his antics but for demonizing the very behavior in which he clearly likes to indulge. But I have to hand it to his kids, they did stick up for him when everyone was piling on.

The man just has a wide pooping stance is that his fault that it can be construed as him wanting to get freaky in a mens room.

My question is how do the 2 guys go from being in to different stalls to both being in one stall or is there some kind of trap door that only closeted gay men cruising for sex know about?

Posted by: Patrick | June 12, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

openly gay men crusing for sex also know about the secret trap door. How did you find out about it?

Cops pretending to be homosexuals in airport bathrooms does not make the public feel more safe about using the toilets.

If the police put a fake drug dealer and a fake prostitute on the street corner near your home every night for a month, would you feel more safe or less safe?

Why doesn't TSA provide funding for restroom attendants to assure that no terrorists are plotting mayhem in the airport toilets?

Kacoo, how do you know he was pretending? Lots of cops are asspounders.

Some people have no shame. Some have utterly none. Larry Craig, however, sets the bar much higher. He's refused to resign from the Senate until his term ends in January and his corrupt Republican colleagues lack the courage to toss him out. Nevertheless, he'll be gone in January. We can expect he'll be dancing on gay bar stages and bartops in southwest Washington, D.C. by early February. After all, he has to make a living somehow. One just wonders if his mousy little wife and his kids will be there cheering for him in his thong. Wow, Republicans are so sick.

Maybe I am misinformed, but the children are not his. H adopted them after marrying a lady with 3 children from a previous marriage.

Posted by: elnito | June 13, 2008 12:08 PM | Report abuse

When Larry Craig married his "ready-made family," most people knew that it was a sham. Remember that when there were allegations of homosexuals in the US House (no s---, Dick Tracey), he issued a press release stating that he was not gay. If there were ever any doubt, that ended it. He should have issued a press release saying I am gay AND stupid. Now to use his stepchildren to boost his "manliness" so blantantly is shameful. It is the Republican party and its homophobia that tortures guys like Larry Craig and keeps them in the closet. Senator, I don't care if you're gay. But your hypocrisy is disgusting.

Posted by: Martin | June 13, 2008 1:12 PM | Report abuse

No great surprise that, as your first paragraph would suggest, Craig likes things that "stick up for him," especially the boys.

Posted by: Daniel Hopper | June 13, 2008 3:18 PM | Report abuse

I don't care that he's gay or even if he believes he's gay. I do care that he's corrupt and takes corporate lobbyists' money instead of doing the right things for Idahoans and the right things for Americans.

PEOPLE OF IDAHO, PLEASE ELECT A DEMOCRAT OR ANYONE ELSE YOU CAN FIND TO REPLACE THIS CREEP. Since Republicans approve of the swell job he's doing so much they won't take him up on his kind offer to resign, I hope you will choose someone who will.

Is it any worse then Jesse Helms and his date Coverting or were they Covorting in the Tidal Basin in Washington DC. How about John Edgar Hoover and that suck that was nothing like an ElectroLux anyway. Maybe it was the vacuum's force that killed him. Elmo Johnny as they used to call him didn't have any more enemies then Richard Nixon and he fooled around on all of the Offical Portraits in the White House anyway. Only bordom killed Richard Nixon.
I think we should stop insisting that our elected officials be elected by a Party Plan because somehow they never invite anybody to the Party after they get elected except themselves.
So even if Larry Craig was a Democrat who is going to figure out how to focus off the US? If it's not the President then it isn't me anyway because I haven't been focused off since I was conceived.

Nobody seems to have remarked that there's a difference in word choices. Larry Craig is not gay. He is homosexual -- and a hypocrite besides. Gay means you embrace who you are, accept this minor difference between you and everyone else. Homosexual means you have sex with your own gender.

Needless to say, I despise Larry Craig, but I also pity him. And I REALLY pity his poor family. They are being used, and apparently don't mind it.

Yeah, Larry denied being gay 20 years ago and then ran out and got some poor woman with 3 kids to marry him. He was a sham then and he is a sham now. Be proud Idaho - He is your man in D.C. !
