Rep. Conyers Gets Out Latino Vote for Obama (Or Maybe Not)
It wasn't exactly the crowd he was going after, but Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) really turned heads at Tuesday evening's reception to celebrate the gorgeous new chancery building of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China.
It was something he wore: a button that said "Latinos for Obama."

(barackobama.com)
Conyers, the subpoena-wielding chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is African American, not Latino. And Ambassador Zhen Wenzhong's reception wasn't exactly Latino-centric, either.
Conyers was a little too busy Wednesday trying to throw Karl Rove in jail to explain via a spokesman his decision behind wearing a "Latinos for Obama" button. Maybe one of his Hispanic colleagues asked him to do it in order to help Obama win over the crucial voting bloc that GOP presidential candidate John McCain is vigorously wooing. We don't know, Conyers' spokesman said it was too hectic a day to find out.
But whatever the reason, guests at the Chinese chancery found it amusing.
One high-powered Sleuth informant who attended the inaugural event said Conyers' button reminded him of the time Jewish (and white) Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) tried in vain to join the Congressional Black Caucus. He also noted that "Conyers wearing a 'Latinos for Obama' button would be like Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) wearing an 'African Americans for McCain' button."

Do you have any facts that prove what you are saying or is this just more of the fear mongering and policies of hate being pushed to the forefront. What is your evidence that he doesn't want to give citizen ship to latinos. Your silly, and it is sad that people can just spout off nonsense and other people belive it. I think you need to take a closer look at the GOP policies. I hear GOP canidates the most talk about "the immigrant problem" or wanting to put a fense up around our country's boarders. That is what they talk about here in Ohio. I find that silly cause this entire country is populated mostly by immigrants. This country was populated by the Native Americans who endured and suffered from American Terriorism. Basically, if you want to beat the man and take his job, play the game and beat him. Don't make up things and spew hate.

Immigration policy (along with energy policy) is badly needed in America rather than random application of current law and differences among states

Conyers courting Latinos? Where are the many politicians with Spanish-speaking backgrounds?
Conyers? Who cares in this case. I doubt he has pull or a whole lot of sway with that community.
Okay itas a trivial dumb article but Latinos are a major force in FL,CA, TX and OH. Michigan I don't know. Of course NM, CO, also up for grabs supposedly have hvery significant Mexican American populations.

Anyone with a little smarts knows who is the better candidate. And it isn't the man from Arizona.

This is in response to Dwight's ridiculous letter stating that Americans shouldn't be trying to stop illegals from swarming into the country because almost the entire United States is made up of immigrants and that the native Americans had to put up with American terrorism. First of all, just the fact that Latinos have so much power to sway elections in this country means that they are becoming far too numerous here. Immigration is only good when you get it from several different parts of the world with different languages and cultures. Then, they assimilate. When you have only one ethnic group coming into your country and growing and growing, while millions more come over, then it amounts to an invasion. If you don't think so, ask Mexicans with a population of over 109 million what they would think if tens of millions of illegal Chinese immigrants came to make up 30% of their population with no end in sight to their growth, taking over entire Mexican states. How would Mexicans feel if these Chinese started to push the Mexican govt. to make them citizens knowing all the while that there were millions and millions more coming over illegally every year? I wonder if Mexicans would allow such a situation to continue. Don't make me laugh. By the way, Dwight, if you think the Indians were the original inhabitants of North America, think again. Their ancestors came here from Asia. We don't consider ourselves to be immigrants even if our ancestors came here from Europe. Forget the border fence. Put the army on the border and stop ALL immigration from Mexico or any other Spanish-speaking nations for the next 100 years and concentrate on taking in immigrants from other parts of the world. This will allow us time to assimilate those who are already here. If they haven't assimilated by then, the embargo on those nations stays even longer.

Why don't you report some real news. People are losing their jobs, their homes, have no health care, can't make ends meet. By the way, this is a free country.
Conyers is entitle to wear what he wants to wear. Get a life!

I hope latinos SEE through Obama as some of us REAL DEMOCRATS HAVE, and Vote COUNTRY FIRST!! JOHN MCCAIN 08! NOOOOOBAMA!!!!!!!!
----------------------------------
John McCain cares about Latinos as much as he cares about his first wife, NOT AT ALL.
John McCain long stop putting Country First when he decided to flip flop from the John McCain I used to respect in 2000 who's now posing as a Carl Rove prodigy.
Second he's no longer Country First as he decided that the new G.I. Bill wasn't even important enough for him to show up to vote yea or nay on that Obama showed up for and voted yea. The G.I. Bill was long overdue to be updated and McCain never bothered to vote or offer his own version of the bill publicly. McCain wants to cut back benefits on veterans and instead front load them to military personnel currently in combat. So what about the combat victims who's lost limbs, are paralyzed, or suffer from post war syndromes? What about them? Voted against providing better armour and safer equipment for troops in 2006 but he's touting how much he respects our service men and women but by his voting record he doesn't respect him much. Even former military stalwarts like R-Chuck Hagel, D- John Kerry, Wesley Clark, and Colin Powell are miffed at McCains record in the Senate recently when it comes to military issues. If he doesn't respect the men and women in service which he boats so proudly, then what makes you think he gives a rats behind about Latinos. Get a life. Try seeing how he's treated Latinos in his home state of Arizona and you'll see the real Straight Talk.

LATINOS FOR OBAMA:
Posted by: Josue | August 4, 2008 7:10 PM | Report abuse
My husband and I come from military family's who fought in wars, like McCain. Most of us have the greatest respect for our war heroes. Supposedly McCain was one of them. We learned a lot from them knowing we could always depend on our soldiers . This has dwindled the past couple of months. If McCain was a real war hero, something must have happened to him of late...let the real McCain stand up. Maybe he always was a nasty person and only now we get to see the real McCain. Jealous, small minded and above all hypocritical.
Barrack Obama is young, intelligent and knows how to move people, he has fought wars of a different kind and came out a REAL HERO, respect he deserves...situations change, ideas change, actions change...he loves America and its people and wants to prove that change is possible with the help of ALL real Americans give him that chance, he is young he is vibrant and gives the feeling that YOU CAN do a lot TOGETHER.
Ol' man McCain has to get the message by now that his behaviour does not deserve the respect from his fellow Americans and instead he has become whining, whinching ex war hero

Conyers wants latinos to vote for obama but doesn't want Latinos given amnesty and citizenship. he know that latinos will then vote and win for a latino in a seat currently occupied by African Americans...He knows it will happen...but he won't like it and will vote against it in congress...
