Edwards Won't Ruin Democratic Convention After All

It's official: Democrats have dodged the John Edwards bullet at their party's national convention in Denver next week. Edwards, whose infidelity to his cancer-stricken wife has made him a leper among his own people, won't be anywhere on the sidelines.

"Unequivocally, he is not going to Denver," says Jonathan Prince, who served as deputy chief of staff on the Edwards 2008 presidential campaign.

Woodruff and Edwards

Despite his humiliating confessional ("I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic") earlier this month, Edwards still hoped to appear behind the scenes at the convention to help Bono's poverty-fighting One Campaign, sources tell the Sleuth.

Edwards, as recently as last week, according to knowledgeable sources, still expressed interest in participating in a One Campaign convention event on Tuesday of next week to assemble supply kits for AIDS caregivers around the world. Which, to put it mildly, would have been awkward.

After the Sleuth sent emails and placed phone calls to the One Campaign press office and separately to Edwards spokesman inquiring about Edwards' involvement, we eventually heard back from both. Their responses came within minutes of each other.

We heard first from Prince, who called to give his unequivocal statement that Edwards will not be attending the convention and, therefore, will not be participating in One Campaign events.

One Campaign spokesman Tom Gavin sent an email a few minutes later telling us, "A while back - May? - Senator Edwards was invited to participate in our service project in Denver...We still haven't heard back from him."

Though we were told by well-placed sources who asked to remain anonymous that Edwards did, indeed, express interest to One Campaign officials just last week in playing a role in Denver, where the former North Carolina senator is most certainly not welcome by party officials. (His wife, Elizabeth Edwards, is no longer scheduled to speak at the convention.)

Edwards, who made ending global poverty a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, appears in several postings on the organization's One Blog, including this must-read posting titled "Edwards Falls for ONE in Iowa Falls."

A source close to Edwards tells the Sleuth that rather than go to Denver to help Bono end poverty, "what [Edwards] really wants to do right now is concentrate on his family."

Ugh. Edwards is still wrapped up in his narcissim if he thinks he would be welcome at Denver. What he needs to do is to establish paternity and to rebuild the horribly broken trust among his own family members. What an incredibly selfish guy.

it is just all so sad. he was and could still be a great advocate for eradicating poverty. I was proud to be an advocate for him in Iowa. Now I'm just sad for him and Elizabeth.

The McCain camp has tried desperately to
find some "dirt" on Obama, but so far they have come up with nothing. They tried to
make the public beiieve he was not born in this country, to make him ineligable to run for the office of President of the US, but that failed also. They searched for
out of wedlock child/children, and came up empty handed.

Obama's opinion on abortion was to make pro-life McCain to be more compassionate candidate. Instead it showed Obama respect for women to make their own decisions about their bodies. And not be stuck in the past where they were, sadly, considered an extension of their husbands body. If it were left to McCain he would have a woman go full-term carrying the child of a rapist! ... He sons sons so why care about other people's daughters. (He has an adopted daughter, and that would include even her too.)

I believe an Obama presidency would keep the American public apprised as to what is going on behind the scenes, which has not really been done before. Would it were that the Roosevelt meeting at Yalta, could have been taped. What would we have learned
from them.

I would hope Obama would bring back a modern version of the "Fireside Chats" instituted during Roosevelts presidency, as they were very much appreciated.

I believe he will work to see that the
colleges in America are filled,by far, predominently, with American students, and not foreigners like they are now. Fewer people know than should, that there is a fund here in America, that give grants to student of other countries, just because they are foreigners. When our own children have to take out loans that take years to pay back. He will work, diligently, to see that even the poorest of the poor find their way out of the ghettos, by not dropping out of school as they are doing now.

He would see that our concerns about world hunger would not waiver. And he would make sure we do not turn our back on our own
hungry and poor.

I respect and admire doctors all over the world, but I do not wonder why in most of our hospitals the majority of them have accents from other countries. It speaks to the fact that America's brilliant students,
in the medical field have to drop out of college for lack of funds.

I would like to see something done about the harvesting of doner parts set aside for foreigners, when we have long lists of Americans waiting for them in every state. Those in charge need to go back to the table, and do the right thing, as the saying goes.

Obama, reflected on absentee fathers, that is America's shame. He used his own father as his best example. In spite of it all look how he turned out, but every abandoned child is not so lucky. I can say the same for our present Olympic swimming champion raised by a single parent.
Single mothers dedicated to their offspings
have got to be proud, these days. And the absent fathers should be ashamed, of themselves. I dare one to come out from under the rock where they hid, and claim a child who has become a star. Just to see how the public reacts to them would be an eye opener.

An Obama presidency, will involve the young and hopeful. And prove to them all, that one does not have to be born privilaged to reach the top.

I would hope it brings home to black youth that there are other goals, beyond those in sports and the entertainment fields, to become interested in. High achievers are welcomed in all fields of endeavor no matter they are.

Times, and things have changed, and I am glad they have. In 1942, when I was 12 years old a black person could not tour the White House. Today, they can even occupy it, if they qualify.

And last but not least, I would hope Mr.
Obama, has the wisdom to distances himself from any Clinton involvement whenever possible. Both Hillary, and Bill are out to kill anything decent the new president would be trying to give life to. Bill Clinton, should be tarted, and feathered if he ever tries to enter the Oval Office, even for a visit. His "stain" is not only on Monica's dress, but it is also, but invisible so, in the most important room in the White House!

Peace and Love, are on the table. People of the world need to take them seriously.
They need to decide to stand for something
worthwhile, or die for ... a lot of just nothing at all.

I have said my piece, so peace be with you.

How could he "ruin" the Democratic convention? Despite his personal moral failings, Edwards is one of the few Democratic candidates who had a functioning brain and a real plan. His issue was dealing with poverty. People who attack him could care less about poverty. If he is narcissistic, what were his rivals? Edwards may disappear from the political map in the aftermath of his stupid mistake, but it will be a loss for the Democrats and a loss for the country.

Poverty? Edwards' campaign donations paid for his girlfriend. He's got a poverty plan right in his pocket, baby.

Edwards was obviously a very unqualified person to be President and that has been vindicated and hopefully will never see him again now!

Posted by: theaz | August 19, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

How can Edwards help global poverty while tearing his family apart and possibly creating a fatherless home elsewhere. Edwards personal behavior increases poverty for kids.

Can you imagine the psychological damage this has caused his children FOR LIFE?

This is the type of behavior that leads to great shame and could poosibly cause his children to turn to bad things (drugs, alcohol etc) for comfort. So much for his war against poverty.

Irresponsibility with reproductive body parts adds to many social problems.

John Edwards' lies continue. He really wanted to go to Denver, until a few days ago, and when he finally realized he was unwelcome, he said he wasn't going because he would rather spend more time with his family. It seems he would rather spend time with anyone but his family.

And note how in his original "apology" press release, he claimed to have been 99% truthful with the press from the beginning. Hah!

I've always known John Edwards was completely unqualified for that office, and recent events just confirm that.

Ms. Akers, keep up the good reporting. I always enjoy your articles.

Thank God. Edwards is a sad, deceitful narcissist who should retire from public life. He let down a lot of people, myself included.
But then again, if the GOP can continue to back a world-class fornicator and big time hypocrite like David Vitter (and the despcicable Dick Cheney is speaking at their convention), anything's possible.
Props to Listen Up for a great post. Wish more people in this country were like you.

How come McCain's repeated infidelities to his gravely injured first wife hasn't made him a leper among his own people, who are supposedly the Party of Moral Values?

Supposedly we shouldn't question McCain's integrity because he was a POW. But he cheated on his wife after he returned to America from Vietnam, after he had been a POW.

Does the POW Integrity Effect come with some sort of time lag - will being a POW turn a person into a paragon of virtue, but just not for several years?

Just wondering.

I am totally disgusted with the way so many people have taken to McCains lies, and negative ads, is this the new America??.........Why not just go to a country that is communist then, because if the people want to vote for John McCain after all the lies he has been telling including the latest version of his POW cross in the sand story to impress the Evangelist..........I want to believe that Pastor Rick Warren honetly didnt know that what he said wasnt true about McCain being in a cone of silence......I knew from the very first comment out of his mouth that this was not John McCain talking, complete difference........and I initially thought Obama has been set up......and indirectly he was.......the NYT has agreed with this assessment......Soooooo when does it stop, because McCain was a POW, does that give him free run over lying, and running absolutely terrible ads against Obama......and this increases is ratings in the polls???? I dont get it......Does any one ever listen to Keith Oberman......he has all the right information and he has made outright statements to McCain and has said You Senator McCain are a Liar...........I dont understand....do we not have any people in this country that finds this unacceptable or is the campaign for presidency a game like Chess and the object is to check mate.......Karl Rove is the fairy godfather to these Republicans who can dish it out but cant take any criticism .....I am very concerned to where this country is going right now.

Regarding McCains time as a POW, the stories seem to get more and more embellished, with the last one with the part of the cross in the sand and the guard and him realized they were just Christains, doesnt anyone in the media research these fabrications.....sounds like it was stolen from Alexander Solzhenityn's book "The Gulag Acchipelago......about his time in a Soviel Labor Camp........ironically John McCain is fan of this author and has made reference to him many times, but now he is stealing his words to embellish his own story..........someting like when Hillary Clinton cited her foreign experience with when she went to foreign countries, specifically Bosnia.......which we all know was totally fabricated........If this is acceptable because his sad stories as a POW has influence the peoples opinions, I think he is being given a free ride.......and right now as I write, thre is yet another account on a film of John McCain esaping from a plane crash.....this is amazing how after 30? years there would be a tape of an exact mission with John McCain in the distance walking away from the fallen plane and even bring up a tear or so........sounds familiar......right just like Hillary Clinton......both actors and thats where they would serve their best purpose...........Also why not any questioning about his dispictabe behavior toward his first wife after her disfiguring accident and he had been cheating on her for a while.......when he decided to run for president he dumped his wife and married the heiress to the Anhauser Bush dynasty.......doesnt sound like someone I would have respect for as our president.

"Edwards Won't Ruin Democratic Convention After All"

Yes, Democrats love the sleazy crapola. After all, Pelosi appointed the virtual felon William Jefferson Democrat from Louisiana to the Office of Homeland Security. Edwards resume is enhanced and probably up for an important role in the Democrat party.

How very sanctimonious (making a hypocritical show of religious devotion, piety, righteousness)of the Democratic Party.
How very un-Jesus Christ like of the Democratic Party.

This is to Gloria and those who agree with her: The dangers to this country are economic, not military. This country is falling because it no longer has a middle class, because so much of its population increasingly has no access to health care, education or decent housing and no hope, under the Republican agenda, of any improvement. Countries without a sizable middle class are week and unstable, and that is why this country is in so much trouble, not because of some imagined military enemy.

Edwards got suckered, at a time when he was vulnerable. Reille got rich and the new baby will be cared for. Someday, maybe she will know her true identity. Edwards needs to stay home. His personal integrity is lost. McCain violated his vows, abandoned his wife and chose the good life with his heiress. But then again, that happened a long time ago, so who really cares?? Has anyone stopped to consider that if this news had been properly investigated and reported by the liberal mainstream media when the National Enquirer first broke the story, John Edwards would have been out of the race and Hillary would be the Democratic nominee??? Oh, wait....what was I thinking??? The Obamesiah was meant to be.....yeah right!

Funny how folks are trashing John Edwards, when the "family values" GOP party has a WIFE-CHEATER as their nominee for president. Seems McCain and rich girl Cindy were doing the "mattress mambo" while John's wife was recovering from an automobile accident. Why aren't the right wing conservatives condemning this immoral behavior? Are they all busy too busy committing their own immoral acts?
